30 Your class has been discussing various sports. Your teacher asked you to write an essay about an outdoor sport you are interested in. In your essay, you should write about: • the outdoor sport you are interested in • reasons for your choice • how this sport has benefitted you Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your essay in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. [Introduction] They are many outdoor sports that teenagers can enjoy. [Point 1] I am interested in horse riding. Horse riding is an outdoor sport that is gaining popularity. There are riding clubs that offer affordable lessons in Denai Alam, Sungai Buloh and even within the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) campus. It teaches riders many skills that you may not learn from other outdoor sports. [Point 2] I am interested in this sport because it combines two things that I like very much which are animals and exercising. Learning to ride a horse includes caring for them. Horse riding lessons typically include essentials on caring for a horse such as grooming, bathing horses, grazing and saddling them up for a safe ride. [Point 3] Other skills can be acquired from horse riding too. It helps with balancing skills, coordination, fine motor skills and builds stamina. Furthermore, manoeuvring a horse is a skill too. Horse riding is also known to help with focus, discipline and overall mental well-being. [Conclusion] I encourage all teenagers to take up horse riding. Research shows there is a close link between the rise of the modern culture of consumerism and the worrying rates of obesity we are seeing around the world. However, this should not be a surprise, since consumerism implies exactly that –– using as much as we can, rather than as much as we need. This will cause a domino effect of problems on society. Overconsuming leads to obesity, which in turn leads to further cultural and social problems. For example, medical services are stretched further as the worldwide obesity rates rise. Adapted from: https://greentumble.com/the-negative-effects-ofconsumerism/ 7 From the text above, the modern culture of consumerism A causes people to use as much as they can. B will cause a domino effect of problems on society. C causes people to worry about what they see in the world. If you feel you have been overcharged for goods or services, submit a complaint immediately. As a consumer, you are entitled to do so. Antiprofi teering is covered by the Price Control and Anti-Profi teering Act 2011. It is a law that protects consumers from excessive profi teering––the act of charging consumers an unreasonable price with the intent of making much profi t at a time or situation which gives the traders an advantage. For example, overcharging the price of chicken during festive seasons and overcharging the price of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. 8 Which of the following can a consumer complain about? A Being overcharged for foodstuff during a festive season. B Not given a discount for goods and services. C Sellers making a profi t on their sales. 40 The offices of Hilary’s Eat Well, above Local Burger in downtown Lawrence, are sunny and friendly, much like the owner, Hilary Brown. [1]Predictably, the offices are busy, generating and emitting a happy energy that is contagious. Brown herself is a bundle of unbridled energy and enthusiasm―bouncing from one project to the next. She’s quick with a smile, and these days she has a lot of projects to smile about. In 2005, Brown opened Local Burger on Vermont Street in Lawrence, Kansas. She had a vision and wanted to provide a different kind of fast food.[2]Her food would be fresh, sustainable, organic, all-natural and sourced from the most local providers she could find. In the process of creating the menu for Local Burger (which features elk, pork, buffalo, beef, chicken, turkey and tofu), she developed a veggie burger, knowing a large portion of her clientele would be vegetarians. The veggie burger was an instant success and it wasn’t long before her customers started requesting that she sell it in stores. Brown liked the idea of an additional profit source, but she was a new business owner with a lot on her plate. Learning the ins and outs of mass producing, marketing and selling the veggie burger outside of her storefront was a low priority. She did manage to get the veggie burger into a few places like the University of Kansas’ Memorial Union.[3]Sales were good, but the project stalled when Brown had a baby and went on maternity leave. Two local investors jumped onboard in 2010 and Brown started thinking of the bigger picture. “My introduction to the burgers happened at Local Burger in 2011,” says Alison Langham, an investor in Hilary’s Eat Well. “In the summer of 2011, Hilary approached me about investing in her company. I studied the Hilary’s Eat Well business plan, which I found compelling and convincing. I know that the organic, allergen-free food market is on the rise, and I know Hilary is passionate about her business―all this plus the strength of Hilary’s team made my investment decision easy.” As word on the veggie burgers grew, so did orders. Lawrence Memorial Hospital, The Merc, Checkers and Hy-Vee picked up the burgers. Lawrence restaurants, 23rd St. Brewery and Bigg’s BBQ began serving the veggie burgers on their menu. “This is the kind of thing I love,” Brown beams. “Local businesses helping other local businesses. Doug Holiday, owner of Bigg’s BBQ and Matt Llewellyn, owner of 23rd St. Brewery are great. I can’t say enough good things about them.” Whole Foods in Kansas City began selling the burgers in their metro shops and they now have approval to distribute to Whole Foods Markets across the country. “It’s grown really fast,” Brown says. “The goal has always been to distribute nationwide, and we’re getting there. You can find our products on the shelves in over 44 states, including Puerto Rico and Hawaii. We get more locations every week through our national distribution contracts, and hope to expand to all 50 states soon!” The business grew and Hilary added staff.[6]In November 2010, they opened a production facility in east Lawrence. Everyone works closely together and it is clear they feel like a family. Brown is proud of her young company, but quick to pass the praise. “I have people who are smarter than me in a lot of areas,” she says in a matter-of-fact tone. Brown hopes they can stay in their current production location at least until the end of year, but the growth has been swift and she is sure by next year they will be looking for more space for more equipment. The success of Local Burger and the emergence of Hilary’s Eat Well have established Brown as a local visionary. “I never really set out to be a veggie burger distributor, but I’ve always been an ‘idea person’,” she says. “I would make lists of products I thought up that should be out there, anything from toothpaste to different foods.” Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. A Her ability to have established Local Burger as a local visionary. B Her dedication and ability to develop organic farms. C Her success to work closely together with others. D Her experience as a farm apprentice. 8 When Hilary Brown talks about her ingredients and her thoughts on farming and agriculture, her eyes light up. This shows that Hilary is A uncertain and unhappy. B worried but optimistic. C happy and excited. D proud and relaxed. [8 marks] She has painstakingly researched the environmental impact of the ingredients she uses. [7] Having been a farm apprentice at Growing Growers, an organisation dedicated to developing organic farms around Kansas, she has a strong understanding of the ecological and health implications of each ingredient she selects. When she talks about her ingredients and her thoughts on farming and agriculture, her eyes light up. Hilary Brown discusses grains the way some women talk about jewellery. Her belief in her products and in the bigger picture of agriculture, health and sustainability is infectious. 42 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following texts. Read the texts below and answer the questions that follow. What is a consumer? • A consumer is a person who buys goods and services for personal consumption. • Good consumers are careful about how they spend their money. • Wise consumers only buy what they need. They ask if it is worth it and whether it is of quality. A Mariam Abdullah – Housewife I ask my friends what brands of cooking oil or floor cleaners or some other products they use. I only buy the brands they recommend. B Yusof – Businessman Before buying an item, I ask myself three questions: • Do I need it? • Can I afford it? • Does it add value to my life? C Susan Ng – Consultant I’m wary of advertisements. They make use of celebrities to promote products. And they appeal to our desire to fit in, to be cool. D Gopal – Technician I want to buy a washing machine. So, I’m asking around as to which brand is reliable. I don’t want an expensive one but I’m looking for one with a longer warranty. E Henry – Manager I usually have a budget when I plan to buy something and I try to keep to it. I don’t buy things that I don’t need even if they are on sale. If I do, most of the time, they collect dust. F Anis Marisa – Executive I do my research online before choosing a holiday destination. I read the reviews and then make a decision whether my friends and I should go there for our vacation. Tips to become a good consumer • Do your research – ask around – learn to spot good quality versus poor workmanship. • Do comparison shopping. • Wait for sales. • Read the details of the product – especially directions and safety instructions. • Keep receipts and warranties. 48 A Read the article below on environmental issues. Then, answer the following questions. The climate crisis is accelerating at an alarming rate, and we are not prepared for it. While the crisis has many factors that play a role in its exacerbation, there are some that warrant more attention than others. Here are some of the biggest environmental problems of our lifetime. A The global temperature rise is 1.15 °C and Carbon Dioxide PPM (parts per million) is at 420 compared to pre-industrial levels. Increased emissions of greenhouse gases have caused temperatures to rise, which are causing catastrophic events all over the world. The climate crisis is causing tropical storms and other weather events such as hurricanes, heatwaves and flooding to be more intense and frequent than seen before. B For years, economists and environmentalists have been urging policymakers to increase the price of activities that emit greenhouse gases (one of our biggest environmental problems), the lack of which constitutes the largest market failure, for example through carbon taxes, which will stimulate innovations in low-carbon technologies. C A third of the food intended for human consumption is wasted or lost. This is enough to feed 3 billion people. Food waste and loss accounts for 4.4 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Food waste and loss occurs at different stages in developing and developed countries; in developing countries, 40% of food waste occurs at the post-harvest and processing levels, while in developed countries, 40% of food waste occurs at the retail and consumer levels. D One of the biggest environmental problems today is outdoor air pollution. The causes of air pollution are industrial sources and motor vehicles, as well as emissions from burning biomass and poor air quality due to dust storms. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, attention has been put on the role of air pollution gases in transporting the virus molecules. 49 E Every hour, forests the size of 300 football fields are cut down. By the year 2030, the planet might have only 10% of its forests; if deforestation isn’t stopped, they could all be gone in less than 100 years. Agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, another one of the biggest environmental problems appearing on this list. Land is cleared to raise livestock or to plant other crops that are sold, such as sugar cane and palm oil. Besides for carbon sequestration, forests help to prevent soil erosion because the tree roots bind the soil and prevent it from washing away, which also prevents landslides. F The past 50 years have seen a rapid growth of human consumption, population, global trade and urbanisation, resulting in humanity using more of the earth’s resources than it can replenish naturally. A recent WWF report found that the population sizes of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians have experienced a decline of an average of 68% between 1970 and 2016. More than 500 species of land animals are on the brink of extinction and are likely to be lost within 20 years; the same number was lost over the whole of the last century. Scientists say that without the destruction of nature by humans, this rate of loss would have taken thousands of years. 52 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about creating a rain garden. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Creating a Rain Garden A rain garden is a shallow depression that is planted with grass and plants to capture rain water runoff and stop the water from reaching the sewer system. The concept of a rain garden is a wonderful and unique way to help our environment as catching water in a rain garden allows it to slowly filter into the ground. This means less rainwater is lost into our drains. (1) D Rainwater that is filtered by rain gardens also reduces contamination of water into streams, rivers and lakes. When rain gardens are placed downhill, it can maximise the most amount of rainfall collected from runoff that flows down naturally. (2) G They can be in any size or shape imaginable. When building a rain garden, it is important to consider the placement of it. It is most practical to position rain gardens on level to moderate slopes. (3) E However, try to avoid placing the rain garden in an area where water currently collects. Standing water is an indication that the soil there is slow to absorb water and that defeats the purpose of the rain garden which is to aid in water infiltration. Be sure not to place the rain garden too near the house. A distance of at least three metres is advised. (4) B Collecting rainfall from your rooftop is also easy. Just place your rain garden where downspouts will drain into it, directing water with pipes if necessary. Native plants are a good choice for rain gardens. They tolerate short periods of standing water and are drought tolerant. (5) C Native plants are also great at conserving soil and water. They do not need fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides. This is good as it is supporting a diversity of wildlife by improving their habitat without chemicals. Native plants in rain gardens also reduce long-term maintenance as they last longer because they are hardy and are less prone to destructive insects and diseases. There are many ways to help the environment. (6) F Building a rain garden can be an innovative way to get you and your family involved in helping the environment. A Native plants can be bought at local nurseries. B This is to prevent water from seeping into and damaging the foundation of the house. C Moreover, their deep roots make it easy for water to move down into the soil. D In addition, there will be less flooding and erosion in our environment. E The most logical location for a rain garden would be an existing low spot in the garden. F Some people choose to recycle while others choose to walk instead of driving to their destination. G Another benefit of a rain garden is that they are really versatile. H The rain garden can be created within a day. 53 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following texts. Read the texts below and answer the questions that follow. Methods of Waste Management A Landfi ll This method involves the burying of waste and is the most common practice around the world. These landfi lls are usually deserted and vacant locations around cities. Landfi lls, also known as borrow pits, are designed carefully so they serve as an economical and sanitised method for waste dumping. B Incineration This method involves the combustion or burning of waste materials at high temperatures. It is also known as “thermal treatment.” This method is utilised to convert waste materials into reusable energy such as gas, heat, ash and steam. It effectively reduces the volume of solid waste. C Recycling Paper, plastic, glass and aluminium are usually recycled to convert waste materials into new objects. Recycling can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower the consumption of raw materials, reduce air and water pollution and conserve natural resources for future generations. D Composting Waste materials, which come in organic nature (plant, kitchen and garden waste) are easily turned into nutrient-rich food for your plants. Composting is usually used for organic farming and is one of the best methods to transform organic products which are unsafe into safe compost. However, composting takes time and space. E Reduction and avoidance methods This method involves reducing the amount of waste materials that goes into landfi lls; therefore, avoiding waste from being created. The avoidance of waste production includes using second-hand products and repairing the products you have broken in place of buying new things. Products are designed for refi lling and reusing. Cutting down the use of disposable things and producing products that are more complex is the simplest form of reducing waste. Statement Paragraph 1 Helps to preserve natural resources C 2 Involves reusing old items or repairing items for continued use E 3 The most common method of disposal all over the world A 4 Turns waste into ash, gas, steam or heat B Questions 5 to 8 Vivek has written an email to his friend, Mohamad, in Abu Dhabi. Using words from the texts, complete the email below. Choose no more than one word for each blank. To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Waste management methods Hi Mohamad, I recently read an article about waste management methods and want to share some of the information with you. Did you know that thermal treatment from (5) incineration produces heat, ash and steam which can be reused? In addition, waste material in organic form such as plants, food and paper can be recycled into organic matter. This is then used as (6) compost . Of course, burying the waste in (7) landfills or borrow pits is the most common method used in many countries. I think my favourite is the reduction and avoidance method. This method encourages people to use second-hand products. Additionally, cutting down the use of (8) disposable products is the easiest way of reducing waste. I hope my email has enlightened you a little. Take care, my friend. Vivek [8 marks] F5 Strategi A+ E5(48-58).indd 54 10/19/2023 12:14:28 PM MU BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SLMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. 62 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about tips for staying safe in college. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Tips for Staying Safe in College Crime happens every day on college campuses. This includes everything from theft, bullying, and stalking to burglaries and assaults. (1) B For this reason, it is vital that students know how to stay safe. (2) E From safely using Uber after a night out, to keeping their belongings safe, and using a buddy system when going out, parents need to talk to their children about how to be aware of their surroundings and stay safe. Here are some essential safety skills that parents need to instil in their children before they leave home. Students might spend a lot of time in their classes and the library. Besides that, they will also spend a great deal of time in their dorm room or apartment. This is also where most of their valuables will be stored. (3) A For this reason, it is very important that students know not only the importance of safety in the dorm but also put it into practice as well. Rooms should always be kept locked. It is not uncommon for students to leave their door unlocked. This is especially so if they are expecting a visitor or if they are running down to the laundry room for just a minute. (4) D What’s more, leaving your room unlocked could put you at risk for an assault if someone enters your room without permission. Even if the person is a best friend, they should never loan out their key or student ID. With the key, they can enter the student’s room anytime they want to. With the student ID, they have access to their residential building as well as their meal plans and other private information. (5) G Every student needs to take steps to protect it at all times. (6) C Encourage students to never prop open doors for friends or visitors. If they have a guest visiting, the best way to handle the situation is to follow the campus’s guidelines for signing in visitors. Adapted from https://www.verywellfamily.com A Their valuables will include computers, televisions, cash, jewellery and more. B So, when it comes to safety concerns, no one is immune. C The doors of residence halls lock for a reason. D But most thefts occur in just a few minutes. E Some of them might not know how to stay safe while being away from home. F It is not safe to leave things unattended. G This is the student’s property. H Students do not have much valuable stuff. 70 A Read the following article. Currently, in the times of digital media and information technology, the importance of print media is still the same as years before.[1]Maybe it is the convenience of reading something anytime you want that makes the hardcopies remain popular. Even in our offices where most of the business and information exchange are carried out through the internet, stuff like[2]laser toner cartridge and bulk ink are still very important parts of office supplies. It seems like nothing is ever going to take the place of print media. While the usage of printing and print media seem to have no end even in the future, one really gets curious about the history of this media. Let us go back in time and trace Man’s first successful print making endeavour. [3]Many historians trace the history back to Mesopotamian times of around 3000 BC but there is hardly any evidence to prove it. However,[4]the first actual record is known to be of block prints used around 200 AD in China. Initially it was used to print on clothes. As the usage of paper became common around China and East Asia, the same technique was used on paper as well. Nearly two centuries later, the Romans also used the same printing techniques on both paper and clothes. The earliest example of a complete printed compilation along with illustrations is The Tiananmen scrolls. It was printed in China in 868 AD. In Korea, the same block technique was further enhanced by using metal instead of wood. Later, during the 9th and 10th century,[6]the same technique was used in clay, wood, metal, stone and even glass in the Middle East. The Arabs and Egyptians used the technique to print prayer books and amulets. With the Arab invasion of Europe and Central Asia, this technique also travelled along. Even in Europe, it was used to print religious banners and scrolls mostly on fabric. As this technique was taking over the world, the Chinese invented yet another technique in the 1040 AD. This was the movable object printing. The basic technique was still the block method but the components were actually movable.[7]The very first example of a book printed with this method is a Korean book, ‘Jijki’. It required a lot of effort in moving the tablets around. During 1843,[8]a new technique was introduced by an American inventor, Richard March Hole. In this technique, the image or text to be printed is rolled around a cylinder which is then pressed or rolled over the substrates. With few improvements done as time passed by, this remained a very popular printing technique around the world. Later in 1875, the offset printing was invented. The technique was initially developed to print on tin but now, it has become the most common type of printing used for paper. Although it is good for large scale printing purposes, the increase in daily printing requirements has led to the development of the latest printing technique, the laser printing.[9]It is quick and convenient and the equipment is not too heavy or bulky. This is the technique home and office printers are based on. 71 B Answer the following questions. 1 From paragraph 1, why are hardcopies still said to be popular? Hardcopies are still said to be popular because of the convenience of reading something anytime one wants. 2 The two important parts of office supplies are: (a) Laser toner cartridge (b) Bulk ink 3 From paragraph 2, have historians managed to provide evidence to prove the history to Mesopotamian times? Historians have traced the history back to Mesopotamian times but there is hardly any evidence to prove it. 4 What is known about block prints from the first record? The first actual record is known to be of block prints that were used to print on clothes. 5 How was the block technique enhanced in Korea? In Korea, the block technique was enhanced by using metal instead of wood. 6 From paragraph 3, the block technique was used in clay , wood , metal , stone and glass in the Middle East. 7 From paragraph 4, what is the book that was printed using the movable object printing technique? The very first example of a book printed using the movable object printing technique is a Korean book, ‘Jijki’. 8 From paragraph 5, who introduced a new technique that remains a very popular printing technique around the world? American inventor, Richard March Hole introduced a new technique that remains a very popular printing technique around the world. 9 From the last paragraph, we know that offset printing has now been replaced by laser printing . 10 Laser printing is used in home and office printers because it is quick convenient and the equipment is not too heavy or bulky . Technology in Education A recent study indicates that students are on board (0) with eTextbooks and welcome them into their courses. CourseSmart surveyed more than 500 college students and (1) that students are completely dependent on technologies such as Readers, smartphones, laptops and more to get through their daily college routine. Of the students surveyed, 98 percent own a digital device and 85 percent reported that technology saves them time (2) studying. Many instructors and professors do what they can to (3) students cut down on textbook costs. Some, like History professor Paul Gilmore, do not require (4) textbooks at all. Others put some copies on hold (5) the library, and some even allow previous editions to be used or prepare their own course materials and sell them at minimal cost. Even the California Legislature is weighing in on the cost of textbooks. The legislature is introducing bills to cut the cost of introductory texts to create an open source digital library that would (6) free online copies and printed ones for a maximum of $20. (7) , there are many instructors who do not accept or allow electronic media in the classroom at all. Whether tablets are embraced or (8) can also depend on the subject. Mathematics, engineering and the sciences appear to favour the use of eTextbooks. English education major Jose Ruiz (9) his iPad two semesters ago primarily to take advantage of the eTextbooks. “I use (10) for documents so I save money as I do not have to print stuff out. Write your essay in 125 –150 words in an appropriate style. [Introduction] Social media has many benefits for teenagers. [Point 1] Firstly, news is reported instantly online from across the globe, making it accessible anytime and anywhere. Furthermore, the lack of physical boundaries allows teenagers to communicate with people from all over the world. They can even follow their icons on social media. [Point 2] However, there are harmful elements too. While most icons are a good influence, some may not be. This could lead to them mimicking negative habits. Also, bullying on social media is quite common. The number of reported cases of depression and suicide resulting from cyberbullying on social media is worrying. [Point 3] Although there are harmful elements, teenagers can also stay safe online. They should avoid communicating with people they do not know personally and always consult an adult when they notice inappropriate remarks made towards them. This also teaches teenagers to learn about acting smart and making good decisions. [Conclusion] Social media is here to stay and it is essential that teenagers use it safely and responsibly.
