132 Your class has been discussing inclusive education. Inclusive education means having typical and special needs learners in the same classroom. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay on the advantages and disadvantages of an inclusive classroom. In your essay, you should write about: • the benefits of an inclusive classroom • the disadvantages of an inclusive classroom • your opinion on which is better and why Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your essay in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. [Introduction] Inclusive education ensures all students are given equal opportunities to get an education. [Point 1] An inclusive classroom benefits both typical and special needs learners. Typical students learn to work alongside their special needs peers and become mentors to some of them. It encourages acceptance of all abilities. Special needs learners are given the opportunity to interact with peers regardless of how they learn. [Point 2] However, there are disadvantages too. Some teachers may not be trained to teach learners with special needs. So, special needs learners may not get the attention they need. Furthermore, when lessons get too far ahead, some special needs children may get left behind unless they have shadow aides to help them. [Point 3] In my opinion, inclusive classrooms should be encouraged. There are clear benefits for all in the classroom. Where teachers are concerned, information is aplenty online these days. [Conclusion] Schools could train the teachers on handling inclusive classrooms. Schools could also provide assistant teachers to help the special needs learners. 137 Frogs and toads (0) are amphibians. The word ‘amphibian’ is (9) from the Greek language, which means ‘twin lives’. It refers to the (10) that most frogs and toads spend the early part of their lives in water and their later lives on land. Frogs have smooth moist skin and are likely to be (11) in damp habitats in the garden. Toads, on the other hand, have bumpy skin and prefer to crawl instead of hop. Toads are also able to endure dry places. People always think that frogs and toads (12) simple creatures. This is far from the truth. In fact, they are masters at staying away (13) humans. When you walk in the jungle, you will be amazed to hear loud choruses of frogs as they (14) to tree branches or wallow in small pools. Malaysia is full of frogs and toads, especially in wet places. There are over 165 species thriving (15) forests and wetlands. The biggest variety found in Malaysia is the American Bullfrog. It is not (16) but a foreign species. It is farmed and eaten as culinary food. The tiniest frog can be found in Sarawak. These tiny frogs grow to the size of a pea and they live on a certain plant from which they take their name―Nepenthes ampullaria. There is a Malay folktale that says when frogs or toads croak, they are actually (17) ____________ rain. They are doing this because they are in danger of being eaten by a snake. The rain apparently stops the snake in its (18) __________, forcing it to hunt elsewhere or at some other time. 138 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. I liked water as a child. But when I was eight, I nearly drowned in the children’s pool at a holiday resort. Ever since that day, I always had a fear of water. Despite this, my father insisted that I learn how to swim. Some eight months later, during the long school holidays, I gingerly got into the water for my fi rst swimming lesson…that too after much coaxing from my father and mother. The swim teacher had a hard time getting me to let go of her hand. Finally, I learned to swim in the safety of a private swim school. “Well done, Carol!” said my swim teacher proudly. Over the years, when we went to the seaside for vacations, I never ventured to swim in the sea. The murky water prevented me from seeing the seabed. So I always opted to swim in the hotel swimming pool where I could see the bottom clearly. When I was 18, my two cousins invited me to go snorkelling with a bunch of friends in Pulau Tinggi, one of the lesser known islands off Mersing, Johor. I was hesitant at fi rst, but then decided to give it a go. Together with a friend, we took a train to Mersing, where we stayed at my cousins’ place. Early the next morning, the 12 of us got into a speedboat and headed for an island which was less than an hour away. The sea was choppy and the ride was bumpy. It made me nauseous. Thankfully, we arrived at the island and were greeted by a pristine white sand beach backed by a hill of tropical rainforest. This was Mount Semundu, known as the “General’s Hat Island” to the locals because of its shape. Our home for the next two nights was a semi-open longhouse with a view of the ocean. We had two snorkelling sessions each day―one in the morning and one in the afternoon. After unpacking our stuff, we changed into our swimming gear for our fi rst snorkelling session. Our guide and his helpers handed out the life vests, snorkelling equipment and gave us some simple instructions. It sounded easy enough―breathe in through your mouth and breathe out through your nose―the opposite of what you do on land. For safety reasons, we were paired up into twos, with the guides accompanying the ones who could not swim or were the least confi dent in water. Unfortunately, I was not considered one of them, despite my fear of water. We were given some time to practise in shallow waters and then, led by the guides, we snorkelled in deeper waters. I breathed in and out steadily as instructed and was now extremely thankful for all those swimming lessons. Before, sea water was always foreboding to me because you couldn’t see what was in it. But the minute I put on the snorkelling mask and had my head in the water, I was awestruck by the magical underwater world that I “forgot” to be afraid. Myriad fi sh in many hues swam past me. Colourful corals beckoned from below. We kept paddling until we were quite far from the shore where the water was deeper. So captivated and engrossed were we with the marine life that we lost track of time. It wasn’t until the guide called all of us back with a loud whistle that we realised we had been snorkelling for more than three hours. It was already past lunch time! After lunch and a short rest, we went to another part of the island, which was totally deserted for more snorkelling. Later, as I prepared for my fi rst night on the island, I felt a little wobbly, like I was still moving about in the water. That night, I dreamed that I was in the sea still snorkelling away. It was a sweet dream! I had really enjoyed my fi rst snorkelling experience, and have gone on many excursions after that day. 140 Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about the most interesting cultures in the world. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fi ts each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Most Interesting Cultures in the World The world has over 195 countries which are inhabited by people of different ethnicities. Every ethnic group has its own culture that governs them. While some have cultures that are bearable, others have cultures that are not only hilarious but scary and even weird to some extent. The men belonging to the Latuka Tribe of Sudan have a unique way of proposing a marriage. Imagine this; a young man identifi es a woman he thinks is fi t to be his wife. And instead of courting her, he kidnaps her. After the kidnap, his elders go to the lady’s father to ask for her hand in marriage. If the girl’s father accepts his daughter to be married to the said young man, he will give the suitor a thorough beating. (27) C While the rest of the men are going down on one knee to propose, a Latuka young man only needs the strength to sweep his bride off her feet and run. The Kazakhs, a nomadic tribe, live in Kazakhstan. Their most famous tradition is hunting with eagles. This tradition is one of the uppermost forms of art and staunchness. There is an annual Golden Eagles Festival where the Kazakhs wear wolf skin and take to the mountains on horseback. (28) A The Rabari tribe in India happens to be one of the tribes that upholds the culture of magic. The Rabari originated from Iran more than 1,000 years ago. You can easily identify them from their elaborate embroidery, great brass jewellery and tattoos. Their women wear magical symbols that are both decorative and religious. (29) G Found in Kenya and Tanzania, the Massai are known to be courageous and friendly. An interesting culture of theirs is the spitting culture. A good example is when a baby is born. The elders come to bless the baby by spitting on it and saying that it’s not a good baby. They believe that by saying the baby is terrible, they attract blessings to the baby. (30) E Also, their young men or warriors spit on their hands before shaking the elders’ hands. The Ahaagaren Tuaregs of Algeria is another tribe that has an interesting culture. Under normal circumstances, especially in the Muslim community, it’s the women who adorn veils. (31) B Here men wear veils and are not allowed to remove them unless they are home or are travelling. The Pokot community are in Kenya. They are farmers and are known for farm produce and keeping of cattle. For you to earn respect in this community, you need to have lots of cows. (32) F This means that if you have stores of farm produce but only a small number of cows, you are considered to be poor. 144 Part 2: Guided Writing [20 marks] You must answer this question. Question 2 Your class has been discussing the advantages of taking public transport and owning your own vehicle. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay on it. In your essay, you should write about: • the benefi ts of public transportation • the benefi ts of owning your own vehicle • your preferred choice and reasons for your choice Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your essay in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. [Introduction] There are many modes of transport to get from one place to another. [Point 1] Public transportation range from trains, buses, and taxis to GrabCars. Most places within the city are connected by MRTs or LRTs, therefore, one does not need to worry about traffi c. Furthermore, there is less carbon emission making it environmentally friendly. [Point 2] Owning your own vehicle has many advantages. You are not tied down to only going to places with access to public transportation. It can also be used to travel for leisure. Carpooling is an option too whereby you can take passengers travelling to the same destination. [Point 3] I prefer owning my own vehicle. I can use it to get to work or university and do not have to depend on anyone. It also allows me to run errands for my family so that they are not burdened with too many tasks. Furthermore, I can also do favours by taking friends along who are heading in the same direction. [Conclusion] Therefore, I would prefer owning my own vehicle. 156 Part 4: Note Completion [10 marks] Questions 21 to 30 You will hear a student, Rani, talking about a fun way to de-stress. For questions 21 to 30, fill in the missing information in each numbered space. Use NO MORE THAN ONE WORD for each space. You will hear each recording twice. Answer all the questions. Fun Way to De-stress Rani wants to (21) inform teenagers of a fun way to relieve stress. She stays in an apartment and the (22) residents there are not allowed to keep cats or dogs in their homes. When Rani was doing her school assignment, she came across a video of a (23) dog performing tricks. Since then, she started watching other videos of cute animals during her free time or when she was feeling (24) down . Rani believes students undergo a lot of stress with schoolwork, (25) tuition and co-curricular activities. In a British study, it was found that just by watching videos of cute animals, our level of (26) anxiety could be reduced hence helping to improve mental and physical health. In the study, 19 participants showed a significant (27) reduction in stress levels in just about 30 minutes of watching cute animal videos. The experiment lasted 90 minutes. One of the animals shown in the videos were quokkas, an animal that is claimed to be the (28) happiest animal in the world. During the experiment, participants noticed that there was a (29) decrease in their blood pressure and heart rate. People of all (30) ages including adults and the elderly can watch these videos as it is good for their health. F5 Strategi A+ MT(147-156).indd 156 10/18/2023 10:00:17 AM MU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
