Then, underline the correct word(s) in brackets. LS 1.3.1 1 In this text, the conflict is between (lions / wild animals) and (hippos / humans). 2 On (4 May / 14 May) 2023, (six / seven) lions were killed by herders. 3 The lions had strayed into their village and attacked (seven / 11) goats and a (cow / dog). 4 The villagers also killed the world’s oldest lion. The lion was believed to be (19 / 90) years old. Generally, lions in the wild live for (15 – 16 / 50 – 60) years. 5 This world’s oldest lion was killed by Maasai (warlords / warriors) who used (axes / spears) to kill the animal. 6 To protect both human life and wildlife, Park officials suggested (a deathly warning system / an early warning system). This system would (prepare / alert) the villagers in case wild animals from the Park strayed into the village. B Work in groups. Discuss these questions and share your answers in class. LS 2.1.4 Listening and Speaking Audio SoW: Lesson 25 Textbook E-Questions Audio 1 Do you think it is justified to kill the six lions? Give your reasons. Yes, I think it is justified. The lions should not have killed the 11 goats. The herders depend on the goats for their livelihood. / No, I don’t think it is justified. The world is trying to protect lions and increase their numbers. They are an endangered species. Perhaps the villagers could have protected their animals more rather than kill the lions. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa 2 How can the village that is located outside the Amboseli National Park protect itself from wildlife coming into the village? They can build fences around the village. They can ask the government if they can set up electric fencing around the village. This would be more effective in keeping out wild animals. The villagers can also post guards at night. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa 3 Do you think it is wrong to clear the forests so that the land can be used to build houses for people? Give your reasons. Yes, I think it is wrong to clear the forests. We destroy the homes of animals. We destroy their hunting grounds. When they can’t find food, they begin to disturb the people in these new housing areas. / No, I don’t think it is wrong. I believe we must give importance to human beings. I believe nature will find a way to solve its problems. I believe these animals will somehow survive. This island is 40 km off the Sandakan coast in Sabah. Many turtles swim here because the waters are clear. Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles come at night to lay their eggs on the beach. Then, the turtles return to the sea. The next day, the park rangers collect the eggs. They take them to the hatchery and bury them in pits. The pits are surrounded by plastic mesh. See the picture I’ve attached. Then, the data is recorded. After 50 to 60 days, the eggs hatch. This is usually at night. 21 [8 marks] Read the text below and correct the underlined errors. For each question, write the correct word in the space provided. Why Do We Need to Protect Wildlife? The term ‘wildlife’ refers not only to wild animals (0) and also plants, insects and fungi. Everything (5) are connected in this ecosystem. So, if a single wildlife species (6) go extinct, it disturbs the whole food chain. Take the honeybee, for example. The pollen it (7) carry is vital to certain crops. If the number of honeybees reduces, these crops are (8) effected. Similarly, if a species increases in number, it is not good (9) with the ecological balance. Take for example, carnivores like lions and tigers. Their numbers (10) is reducing due to hunting and poaching. This means there is an increase in herbivores, like elephants, wild boars and wild buffalo. These animals depend (11) in forest vegetation to survive. If their numbers increase, they would soon move to farmlands and villages in (12) searching of food. Thus, we need to protect wildlife to maintain this ecological balance. Lend a Helping Hand After nine hours of cleaning and scrubbing, as usual, Madam Huang was ready to have a good meal and rest. Whatever little she earned was just enough to pay her bills and buy her food. She was about to sit down and have her meal when there was a knock at her door. She opened it. A young girl was standing there crying. Madam Huang asked her gently what was wrong. Between sobs, she told Madam Huang that her mother was very ill. The family was too poor to take her to the doctor. The little girl had been going around knocking on doors. Unfortunately, no one was willing to help. Madam Huang took pity on her. Abandoning her food, she followed the girl back to her house. The bare house confirmed what the little girl had told her. Madam Huang called for a taxi and took the lady to the nearest clinic. She told the doctor about the family’s situation and asked the doctor to find help for the family. The doctor was helpful. Before leaving the clinic, she gave the girl some money and told her to take care of herself and her mother. 13 Madam Huang usually has her meal after nine hours of cleaning and scrubbing . 14 Madam Huang used whatever little she earned to pay her bills and buy her food. 15 Madam Huang was going to sit down and have her meal when she heard a knock at her door. 16 The little girl stood at the door crying because her mother was very ill . 17 No one had been willing to help the little girl’s family so Madam Huang followed the girl to her house. 25 Comments: ........................................................................................................................................................Teacher’s Signature: .............................................Date: ............................. PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 A behaviour is a way in which an animal or person acts in response to a situation or stimulus. Behaviours are the ways animals interact with other animals or with their environment. Animals and people will carry out behaviours alone or with other animals or people. For every behaviour an animal displays, there is a reason for the behaviour. For example, birds build nests because they are where the birds will live and raise their young. Dogs sit or roll over because they will usually expect a treat or a pat on their heads. People blink to moisten or protect their eyes. Spiders build webs to catch their prey and for protection. Some animal behaviours may be learned, and other behaviours are a part of the animal at birth, and they do not need to learn them. They are born with already knowing how to perform certain behaviours. There are two types of behaviours: innate behaviours and learned behaviours. Innate behaviours are those that an animal already has at its birth. The more intelligent an animal is, the less innate behaviour it will have. For example, humans are the most intelligent animals on Earth, so they have the least number of innate behaviours. Most human behaviours are learned behaviours. If an animal is not born with a particular behaviour, then it must be a learned behaviour. Learned behaviours are developed because of experience, conditioning and learning. The behaviours come about due to an animal’s interaction with the environment or it is taught to the animal. It may seem animals and people are born with some of the learned behaviours, but they are not. For example, people are not born with the ability to talk, even though it seems to come easy once a young child begins speaking. Babies have to learn how to talk. If a child was born in the middle of the wilderness without being exposed to other people, the baby would only grunt or make sounds like other animals. Textbook A Read the text. LS 3.1.1 B Complete the sentences below with suitable phrases. LS 3.1.1 1 The type of behaviour an animal already has at its birth is its innate behaviour . 2 In my opinion, the reason why a female dog attacks anyone who goes near its puppies is to protect them from danger . 3 A four-year-old child who does not know how to talk is probably because he has not been exposed to other people . LS 3.1.2 Portrait of an Artist He was a bad boy, never paid attention in class and was kicked from one school to another until he eventually dropped out in Form Three – but not after having been to five schools. “I was not bothered with my studies,” artist S.T. Long said, his voice tinged with regret. “I never paid attention in class. (1) Lessons were boring and only art interested me . The sketches and drawings in my textbooks bore testimony to that.” “I realised the importance of having an education only when I was out of school. (2) Being educated most of the years in Chinese-medium schools, I was unable to converse well in English . The little that I knew was not enough for me to get around, let alone hold art exhibitions.” However, the artist decided that he had to start somewhere. (3) Every day, without fail he would get a copy of the English newspaper and pick out a news item . With the help of a dictionary, he would check the meaning of each difficult word and memorise it. Persistence and patience paid off and a few months later, he was reading the newspaper and was able to carry on a conversation with ease. Mr Long, 43, smiled as he recalled those delinquent years. “If I had studied hard, I might have had a better life and wouldn’t have had to struggle so hard to make ends meet,” he said. Mr Long went to Paris in 1966 under a government scholarship to study Art for three years at the La ‘Ecole Des Beaux-Art College. (4) Then, he went to do his Masters at the Royal College of Art in London . “When I completed my studies in London, I returned to Paris and was there for another three years.” Some of his works, done over the last 27 years, have been bought by the National Art Gallery and Bank Negara. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris also own some of his paintings. (5) Mr Long has so far held five one-man exhibitions locally and one in Melbourne, Australia . A As Malaysia celebrates her 66th Independence Day, I am asked this question — what is a major unifying factor that is not given emphasis in our country? Having just witnessed the excitement of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, my answer would definitely be sports. B We saw how Malaysians rejoiced with joy and pride when our athletes struck silver and bronze medals. Their achievements in Tokyo were just the right tonic for a nation that has gone through many challenges recently. Malaysians stood united and cheered for the national contingent as true Malaysians, and not as Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans or Kadazans. In sports and during festive occasions, we have displayed a true spirit of Malaysia Boleh. C Our strength as a multiracial nation started since our conception in 1957, leading up to the unification with Sabah and Sarawak in 1963, and was followed through the decades when people stood united and rooted for many occasions and celebrations, including sports. When our team performed well, especially on the world stage, all of us celebrated wholeheartedly together as Malaysians. D I must emphasise that sports, until today, is a great factor that could unite Malaysians. Malaysians forget about race, religion and who they are when they come together to support their national team. We have all witnessed that at the recent Olympic Games. A Read the article below. 49 Part 3 You should spend about 20 minutes in this part. Read the text below and complete the following diagram with no more than three words and/or a number from the text for each answer. Safety around Water According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 23,600 children drown around the world. Toddlers aged one to four top the list. This is followed by children aged five to nine. To create awareness, 25 July is declared World Drowning Prevention Day. The purpose of this day is to remember lost lives and learn water safety. In Malaysia, drowning cases often occur during long breaks and school holidays. People drown in seas, waterfalls, rivers and even swimming pools. Joyful family outings are turned into heart-breaking tragedies. “Children get excited when they see water. They get carried away,” said a parent. One way to prevent drowning is to teach water safety skills to children. This can be done through swimming programmes. These teach the do’s and don’ts around water and the danger water holds. At the same time, children learn basic swimming and floating skills which can save lives. A parent, Madam Leela, said that her six-year-old daughter was always frightened to be in a pool with water higher than her knees. She sent her for swimming lessons. Now, the girl can swim confidently at the deeper end of the pool using a float. Mrs Tan said that swimming gave her children stamina and fitness to take up other sports. Her 11-year-old daughter stopped swimming classes and joined rhythmic gymnastics classes. Her 10-year-old son stopped swimming classes and is into squash. She also found that swimming and sports took her children away from gadgets. Puan Anis says, “The best age to send children for swimming classes is when they can understand instructions. Swimming is good for children’s physical and mental development.” Source: The Star Young children can begin swimming classes when they (24) can understand instructions Safety around Water Most common age group of victims: (17) one to four Swimming builds up (23) stamina and fitness World Drowning Prevention Day is held every year on (18) 25 July Aims of World Drowning Prevention Day: (19) Remember lost lives (20) Learn water safety Swimming programmes teach: • (21) water do’s and don’ts • danger when being in water • swimming skills • (22) floating skills [8 marks] BAKTI SDN. Choose no more than five words and/or a number from the text for each answer. “I may not come back.” My pen pal Jayden lives in Singapore. He, his father and grandfather love climbing mountains. “It’s in the genes. It runs in the blood,” says Jayden. Jayden’s father, however, went one step further. He climbed Mount Everest. But he never came back. Jayden said that on that Friday dated 19May, at 3.30 p.m., his mother received a text from his father. The text said, “Reached Everest summit. Extremely cold. I may not come back. Have HACE. Love you all.” After that text, there was no word from him. The family was grief-stricken. HACE stands for high-altitude cerebral edema. It is a high-altitude illness which causes the brain to be filled with fluid. It can be fatal. Jayden’s mother immediately contacted Seven Summits Treks which is a Nepal-based adventure travel operator. This company and another operator, Nepal Guide Treks, organised Jayden’s father’s Everest ascent. That same Friday evening, Jayden’s mother contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore. They in turn contacted the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi. They in turn contacted the local authorities in Nepal and the emergency medical services. They all said that search and rescue operations were ongoing. At 2 a.m. on Saturday, Jayden’s mother received news. The two Sherpas who were with her husband and another climber in the group, made it down from the mountain. Her husband did not. Jayden’s mother frantically called up the organisers and told them to intensify search efforts. It was a race against time to find him. By Tuesday, they should find him. After that, all operations would cease as the weather would turn bad. Source: The Star BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. Miss Nightingale knew the large supplies of all kinds had been sent from England. Where were they? They were probably locked up in warehouses, she thought. As she must have towels, soap, medicine and food at once, she made her way to one of the warehouses. She asked in gentle tones for the man in charge. “What do you want?” the man asked gruffly. “Would you open the warehouse for me? I need supplies.” “Can’t do it, ma’am. I must have authority to do so.” “Who can give you the authority?” Miss Nightingale asked with a friendly smile.“The entire Board Committee has got to meet, Colonel Dash, Mr Doe, Mr Roe and another three of them,” the officer said unwillingly. “Will you please call them all together to a meeting – now?” she went on, gently but firmly. “I’m very busy just now, ma’am, but tomorrow or, say, the day after, I’ll see what can be done.” “Will you come to a meeting if I get the other members together right away?” she asked. “Well, I – er, I – er, I dare say,” said the officer. An hour later, Miss Nightingale had rounded up every member of the Board. She got them to open the warehouse a few minutes after they had met, and soon all the supplies she needed were delivered to the hospital. A few months later, Scutari Hospital was a well-equipped institution. It even had a wonderful kitchen. Before the nurses arrived, 60 patients out of every 100 had died. Now it was only one out of 100. At the end of the war, Florence Nightingale’s name was on the lips of all her countrymen. Returning soldiers told how she toiled twenty hours every day to save their lives and cheer their spirits. As soon as we walked into Happy Meal Restaurant, a young waitress ushered us to a table. We ordered our food and soon after, our food came. Just as we were about to begin our meal, we heard someone shouting for the proprietor. “What is this? A dead fly in my food!” a man with a deep scar across his face roared angrily. He banged his fist on the table and swept the plate and cup off it. They came crashing to the floor. The proprietor apologised repeatedly to the angry customer and tried to pacify him by offering to replace his food. He even told the customer that he could have his meal for free. The commotion affected the business of the restaurant. Many customers quickly paid for their meals and left, fearing that a brawl would ensue. We too quickly finished our food within minutes and that was probably the quietest and fastest breakfast my family and I had ever had. However, before leaving, I saw that the proprietor had managed to pacify the angry customer. Fresh food and drinks were brought to his table. He sat down again and continued his breakfast. LS 5.2.1 The Elephant Man – Tim Vicary Moby Dick – Herman Melville We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea – Arthur Ransome Non-textbook Literary device: Simile Why does the author use this device? Similes are used by the author to make a comparison, showing similarities between two things. Besides adding a greater meaning to the sentence, the reader is able to have a better understanding of what the author is trying to convey in the story. Examples from the story: …like you and me (pages 2, 19 and 37) It was like a young woman’s hand! (page 5) He thought and played like a child. (page 30) Literary device: Symbolism Why does the author use this device? Symbolism is used by the author to mean something more than its literal meaning. Symbolism uses objects, actions, characters, figures or colours to represent ideas in the novel. Examples from the story: In the little room in the shop, there is a ‘dead flower’ (page 3) on the table. This dead flower signifies tragic events if Joseph Merrick continues to live in that room. There are ‘fresh flowers’ in Merrick’s room in the hospital (page 20). The Queen gives Merrick ‘some red flowers’ (page 27) before she leaves the hospital room. 61 Comments: ........................................................................................................................................................Teacher’s Signature: .............................................Date: ............................. Textbook A Read the passage below. Then, answer the following questions. LS 3.1.3 1 People of all ages, from all countries, travel to foreign places for many different reasons – namely work, family and leisure. Travelling reminds those paying attention that they are not the only ship in the sea, that this is a huge world and that they are only a small pea in it. 2 Whether by plane, train, ship or automobile, travel is generally a pleasurable experience. One of the travelling benefits is to relax. Too often, people get wrapped up in their lives, their daily routine of working, sleeping, eating and living. They become self-absorbed to the point it affects their health, their happiness and their perspective. 3 Another benefit of travelling is coming to see one’s native country in a different light, in a different way. This is done by being able to compare and contrast home from a foreign location, most always through travelling. People do not understand what it means to be a citizen of their native country until they have seen it from a distance, from another country. 4 Travelling also makes one gain life’s experience. Many people in the world do not have the luxury of going to another country for pleasure or even to another city in their native country for that matter. This encourages them to be adventurous. They start their lives abroad and work hard to live life to the fullest, use the time they have to discover new things, meet new people and experience a completely different life. 5 Travelling is good for a person of any age. It may help a person to feel connected to the many people living in the world, and form a better understanding of the world in which they live in, even if it is beyond their immediate environment.
