PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 Textbook A Read the passage below. LS 3.1.5 STREAM Smartphone photography, iPhoneography or mobile photography has clearly become a great way of taking photographs nowadays. People are creating works of art using their smartphones, and these pieces also go up in galleries or are made into prints. Here are some simple guidelines for taking good smartphone photographs. Start with the rule of thirds With the rule of thirds, imagine a grid of lines on your smartphone’s display, dividing it into thirds both horizontally and vertically. This rule will give you a better sense of a photo’s balance. In fact, most smartphones come with an option to display this grid. Know your phone Be familiar with your phone specifications. Add a shortcut that allows you to take quick photographs and not miss any good shots. If you own an iPhone, you can set your home button to act as a shortcut to launch the camera. Have a steady hand The slightest shake could blur your image and spoil what could have been a perfect shot. Some cameras do have apps to help offset the effect of shaking. Take note of your lighting Lighting is one of the most important things to consider when taking phone photos. Bad lighting can kill the best of photos, even with a good camera. So, when taking portrait photos with your phone, make sure your subject is well lit. If you are indoors, follow the rule of keeping the light to your back. Otherwise you get dark images. B Write True or False for each statement. LS 3.1.5 1 The rule of thirds is important to give you a better sense of balance to your photos. True 2 The home button is used to stop the effect of shaking. False 3 Follow the rule of keeping the light to your back if you are outdoors. False 4 Smartphone photography is being regularly used to take photographs. True Smartphone photography is slowly taking over the conventional and digital methods of photography. The tent for visitors was also filling up with parents and guests from our neighbouring schools. The national anthem and the Selangor state song were sung by the students to kick-start the day’s event. After a few words of encouragement from our principal, Encik Salim and guest of honour, Encik Musa, the District Education Officer in Hulu Langat, the Sports Day started. The first event was a march past comprising the representatives of the different houses namely, Panglima, Temenggung, Bendahara and Laksamana. The second event was the relay race – 4 x 100 metres. It was fun watching the students of the lower forms running and passing the batons. The other events included the long jump and high jump. The tug-of-war between the teachers and the students of the upper forms was always looked forward to by everyone including the parents and other spectators. This year, the Temenggung House emerged as the overall champion unlike last year, the champion trophy was won by Laksamana House. A loud roar of cheers and a long applause came from the spectators when the Sports Day ended. All the students who participated with much enthusiasm did not go home empty-handed. Unit 10 That’s Entertainment Theme: People and Culture A Read the passage below on mass media. LS 3.1.3 STREAM ▪ evolved – moved forward ▪ platform – means of giving information ▪ disseminates – circulates ▪ curbing – keeping under control Vocab Assist (1) It gets your message across to a wider audience. Whenever you want to hear your favourite song or watch your favourite show, you would more likely turn on your television, radio or computer. The source that the majority of the general public uses to get their news and information from is considered mass media. The mass media has evolved significantly over time. Have you ever wondered how the latest news and information were communicated in the past? Well, before there was the Internet, television or the radio, there has been the newspaper. It was the original platform for mass media. (2) What is mass media? Mass media means technology that is intended to reach a mass audience. It is the primary means of communication used to reach the vast majority of the general public. Mass media is important because it spreads and disseminates information. The general public typically relies on mass media as it provides information regarding political issues, social issues, entertainment and economic stability. (3) It can help you deliver your message to your target audience. The media is so varied that a community, group or organisation can closely target almost any sector and through them, almost any section of the public. For example, a small, locally-based community group would probably look at concentrating its efforts, such as to reach out to the public about curbing the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, in local newspapers. A bigger event, community or organisation could look further afield to major daily newspapers and commercial radio and television. (4) The influence of mass media. In the last five decades or so, the media and its influence on the societies have grown rapidly with the advance of technology. The first and foremost function of the media in a society is to provide news and information, which is why the present era is sometimes termed as the information age as well. BAKTI SDN. BHD. Coping with Heatwave Global warming can bring about extreme weather events such as heatwaves. A heatwave is defined as having a temperature of 37 °C or more for three straight days. In early May 2023, Vietnam recorded the highest ever temperature of 44.1 °C. The country baked under a heatwave in April and another in May. The state electricity company issued a warning. The huge demand for air conditioners and fans would put the national power system under strain. If it breaks down, there would be a power failure. At the same time, there was a severe drought in Northern Vietnam. Water levels in hydropower dams dropped by 30% – 40%. A resident said, “I’m worried about a power shortage. If there is one, we will suffer in the hot season.” Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and is home to eight million people. The demand for air conditioning increased tremendously. The government stepped in to save electricity. It decided to turn off streetlights at 11 p.m. Parks in the city were plunged into total darkness after 11 p.m. However, to ensure there was enough lighting for traffic, security and order, essential streetlights were left switched on. But they were switched on half an hour later than usual and turned off half an hour earlier. Many citizens agreed with the government’s move. They said, “We should turn off unnecessary electrical equipment, especially lights. It there are too many lights, it feels hotter. We need power for fans and air conditioners. It will be horrible if there is no power.” Source: The Sun BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. A Kind Thought Saved a Life In May 2023, a rare and difficult rescue took place high up on Mount Everest. The rescuers were two Nepali sherpas. The rescued was a lucky Malaysian climber. For climbing mountains higher than 8,000 m in Nepal, sherpas are hired. Sherpas are guides and climbing partners. They climb beside the client to the camps and to the summit. They give advice and a helping hand. On May 18, 2023, Gelje Sherpa (30 years old) was guiding a client from China to the summit of Mount Everest which is at 8,849 metres (29,032 feet). They were now at 8,300 metres. Suddenly, Gelje saw a climber clinging to a rope and shivering in the severe cold. He would surely die if no one helped him. This was in the dangerous “death zone”. Here, temperatures can suddenly drop to -30 °C. Gelje convinced his Chinese client to abandon his summit ascent and descend the mountain. He said it was important for him to rescue the climber. The client agreed. Gelje dragged the climber for 600 m (1,900 feet) down to Camp 4. It took him six hours. Here, he was joined by Ngima Tashi Sherpa. Both of them wrapped the climber in a sleeping bag, tying it securely with rope. Slowly and carefully, step-by-step, Gelje and Ngima took turns carrying the climber on their back down to Camp 3 at 7,162 m (23,500 feet). On arrival, a helicopter using a long line then lifted the climber down to base camp where he was treated. Five days later, the climber was flown back to Malaysia. Source: The Star BAKTI SDN. BHD. I have no time to answer his questions. I have to go for a meeting at 11. It’s already 10.30! I’m running late. Sunny : Sure, Dad. You go ahead. I’ll answer the email. If I’m not sure of the answer, I’ll ask you later. Drive safe, Dad. 3 Betty : Nice to have met you all. Now that the funeral is over, we’ll be going back to Sydney. Sam : Are you flying directly from Kuala Lumpur? Betty : No, we’re not. We’ll be flying from Singapore. From KL to Singapore, we will fly on Firefly airlines. Then, from Singapore to Sydney, we’ll be flying on Qantas Air. Sam : You couldn’t get a direct flight with Malaysia Airlines to Sydney? Betty : No, we couldn’t. It was fully booked on the day we wanted to travel. 4 Sandy : Hey, cousins Andy, Sam and Ben. Come visit us in Alaska. Come during the summer months, that is June, July and August. These are the hot months. Andy : Thank you, Sandy. We would love to. Where do you live? Sandy : We live in Anchorage, the capital of Alaska. Ben : How do we get there? Sandy : From Kuala Lumpur, fly to Hong Kong first. Then from Hong Kong, fly to Vancouver in Canada. Then from Vancouver, fly to Anchorage. You’ll love Alaska. We have glaciers and wide-open spaces. We can go camping, hiking and even visit the glaciers. Unit 2: Food, Food, Food Page 10 A Hi. I am Maria. My brother’s name is Sam. We are twins. We are 15 years old. Let me tell you about our eating habits. I don’t eat much. Before I go to school, I eat one slice of bread and drink some tea. My brother, Sam, on the other hand, eats three slices of bread and drinks a big glass of tea. At recess, I eat some biscuits which I pack from home. My brother eats a plate of fried noodles from the canteen. Then, we get home for lunch. I eat a little rice, some vegetables and fish or meat. My brother eats two plates of rice, a lot of vegetables and two pieces of fish or lots of chicken. It’s the same for dinner. Naturally, I am small-sized. My brother, on the other hand, is big and strong. He says he has to eat a lot because he is a school rugby player. I’m not into sports. B Do you know how nasi lemak got its name? This Malaysian national dish was first created in the West coast of Peninsular Malaysia by fishermen. When fishermen had to go out to sea, they needed to take food with them. So, their wives prepared a meal using whatever things they could find around the house. They used the coconut from the coconut tree and anchovies from the sea. The fishermen’s wives cooked the rice in coconut milk and pandan leaves. Then, they prepared a hot Listening Script BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. Nasi lemak literally means “fatty rice.” But today we view it as a dish which is rich and creamy. Unit 3: The Wonders of Nature Page 17 “What a disaster!” claims one group. “What a relief!” claims another group. What are they talking about? Well, let’s find out. On 14th May 2023, in the early morning hours, six lions were killed outside the Amboseli National Park. The Amboseli National Park is situated outside Nairobi in Kenya, Africa. Like all national parks, the Amboseli National Park is a protected area. This means animals cannot be hunted or killed. The guilty people are severely punished. These six lions were killed by herders because the lions had attacked 11 goats and a dog the night before. These herders live outside the Amboseli National Park. These herders rear goats and cows for their livelihood. One day before, another lion was killed. This lion was believed to be the world’s oldest lion in the wild. This lion was believed to be 19 years old. Generally, a lion lives between 15 and 16 years in the wild. This 19-year-old lion was killed by Maasai warriors who had speared it to death. The lion had left the Park in search of food. Officials of the Park have met with the villagers to discuss the issue. They want to solve the problem of human-wildlife conflict. The officers want to protect both human life and wildlife. The officials say they want to develop an early warning system to alert the community in case wild animals from the Park stray into their neighbourhood. Reports of wildlife straying into communities have increased in recent years. This is because cities have expanded. Cities have grown into ancient migration routes and hunting grounds of these wild animals. Unit 4: Special Relationships Page 28 A 1 “Hooray! We’ve won!” Lily screamed. 2 “Let me explain the answer again,” said the teacher to her students. 3 “Sit down, right now!” said Mr Tan to his son sharply. 4 “Hmm…the answer to question 2 is incorrect,” said Nora to her little brother. 5 “Oooohhhh no! Why didn’t you bring my book? I need it to finish my homework by today,” moaned Alice to her friend. 6 “Wonderful Rita! You did it! I loved your speech!” exclaimed her mother. Unit 6: Ready, Steady, Go Page 41 A Mark : We might go to the football match next Saturday, Christina. Christina : Football? You must be joking, Mark. I can’t stand it. Mark : No? Why not? Christina : Oh, Mark, haven’t you realised yet? Twenty-two men in shorts, running after a ball, trying to kick it into a net, a man blowing a whistle, two others waving flags and thousands of people shouting and screaming like mad men every time it’s a goal or not. Is this a game? Mark : I see…you prefer things like hopscotch, hide-and-seek, leap frog, blind man’s buff and so on. Christina : Stop teasing me, Mark. I’m not a child anymore and there are much better sports than football. Mark : Really? Christina : Yes, take volleyball, for example. It’s exciting. I’d say wonderful, the two teams trying to keep the ball in motion without letting it touch the ground. No foul play, no violence. Mark : Yes, maybe you’re right. I like volleyball, too. For me, all ball games are great! Christina : Not only ball games, Mark. Don’t you like badminton, cards, chess, even darts…and things like that? Mark : Errr…of course, I do. Christina : In that case, can we go for a badminton game this evening at the Grand Hall in town? Mark : Yes sure, I’ll see you there at 5.00 this evening. BAKTI SDN. BHD. Molly : Er…yes, what do you want to do? Richard : We can play some computer games, watch a DVD, perhaps… Molly : I don’t want to watch a DVD, but we can play some computer games. Anyway, I’m a bit busy. I can’t do much on Saturday evening. I’m going to the cinema with my sister. Richard : Yes, I’m going to a football match on Saturday afternoon. I’ll be back home late. Are you free in the morning? Molly : No, sorry. I’m going swimming first of all. Then, I need to go to the library in the afternoon. I want to get some more books to read. Richard : Yes, I need to go shopping on Saturday morning. I need some shirts. I really hate shopping but I’ve no choice. What about on Sunday, then? Molly : I’m going running with the running club in the morning. I promised to help my dad with the gardening in the afternoon. But maybe after four o’clock. Richard : I usually play squash with my cousin at that time. How about in the evening – at about 6.30? Molly : Sounds good. Do you want to come to my place? My parents will be home. But my sister goes to the sports centre on Sundays. Richard : Aerobics? Molly : No, she does aerobics on Wednesdays. She does yoga on Sundays and karate on Mondays. Richard : That’s far too much exercise! Molly : Well, she likes to keep fit. So, we’re meeting on Sunday, then? Richard : Yes, sure. Sounds good. I’ll bring the computer games. Molly : My mum is going to do some baking on Saturday morning, so there’ll be some cakes in the house. Richard : Brilliant! See you on Sunday then. Unit 9: High-Tech World Page 69 A gadget browse headphone website conferencing desktop device wireless B Technology in the classroom is becoming more popular. Tablets are replacing our textbooks and we can research just about anything that we want on our smartphones. The way we use technology has changed the way we live our lives. Students prefer to use technology because they believe it makes learning more interesting and fun. They like laptops and tablets. Subjects that students find challenging or boring can be made more interesting with virtual lessons, through a video or when using tablets. Unit 10: That’s Entertainment Page 81 B Asha : Hi, Mano! Do you want to watch a movie? Mano : Hi, Asha! Sure, what’s on? Asha : Well, there are two action films: ‘Green Harbour’ and ‘War Games’. They’re both in 3D. Mano : I’ve already watched ‘Green Harbour’ but not ‘War Games’. However, I really don’t want to watch action films. What else is on? Asha : There’s a science fiction film, ‘Life in Mars’, but I’ve already watched it. Mano : Is it good? Asha : Yes, it is, but I don’t want to watch it again. There’s a romantic comedy called ‘Giants’. Mano : Mmmm…I’m not sure. Are there any horror films on? Asha : Yes, there’s one entitled ‘Midnight Walker’. It’s got vampires in it. Mano : Wooow!! It sounds exciting. Let’s go and watch ‘Midnight Walker’. What time is it on? Asha : It’s on at 3 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. Mano : I’ll be free in the evening. Can we go this evening? Asha : Sure. 110 Unit 11: Lessons to Learn Page 86 A Good morning, everyone. Your exams are around the corner and I’d like to advise you on how to prepare for the exams. First of all, as the weather is scorching hot these days, it’s vital that you drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. Eat food that gives you energy. During this hot weather, avoid drinking chilled sweet drinks, especially Cola. You might catch a cold. Besides, sugar won’t help you study but fruits and cereals will. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, so eat plenty of apples and other fruits. Look for a comfortable, bright and cool place to study. There must be plenty of light at the place where you study, so that you don’t fall asleep. Relax yourselves and don’t think of unnecessary things. Keep your mind positive. If you feel stressed, go for some physical exercise or walk around your neighbourhood. Do not revise at the eleventh hour. Start your revision early and don’t try to learn everything within a day or two. Make notes on whatever revision you do and understand the points as understanding will make you remember them. Do not try to just memorise in order to pass your exams. You will end up learning nothing! Practise answering some past year exam questions and take note of the types of questions that students are tested on. In addition, take regular breaks while studying or revising. Stretch your limbs and back. Look out in YouTube on how to do stretching exercises at your seats. Go out for a while to breathe in some fresh air. Keep a bottle of water next to you and sip it every ten minutes. It’s important to keep yourself hydrated. Lastly, I wish you all the best in your exams. Good luck and my best wishes to you all! Page 87 A Aaron : So when are you leaving for Australia, Betty? Betty : Tomorrow, Aaron. I’ve finished almost everything I’ve had to do. Aaron : What did you have to do? Betty : A lot of things. I had to buy a plane ticket, of course. And my passport had expired, so I had to get a new one. This morning, I have to go to the bank to change our currency into the Australian dollar. Aaron : Where are you going to stay in Australia and which part of Australia are you going to? Betty : I will land in Sydney and tour there for a week. After that, I’ll be flying off to Perth. I’ve booked Pan Pacific Perth Hotel in Perth and will stay at Amora Hotel in Sydney. Aaron : When are you going to the bank? Betty : Right now. Look, I’m sorry, but I’ve to hang up. It’s almost 11.00 a.m. and I’ve to be back by noon to pack my things. Aaron : Ok, Betty. Have a safe trip. Bye. Betty : Thanks, Aaron. I’ll call you when I get back. Bye. B Last Saturday, Razia visited an orphanage near her house. She met children of different ages. The children were very excited to see her. They invited her to play games with them. As they played games, some of them told her their stories. She was very sad when she heard the stories. Razia stayed there for two hours. When it was time to go home, the children were reluctant to let her leave. Razia promised them that she would come back soon. It was a great experience. BAKTI SDN. BHD.
