Ways to Motivate Children at Home
The relationship between parents and children is crucial. At present, the COVID-19 pandemic
has caused strains in some families due to stress from various factors. Here are some ways to
help rebuild that trust and strengthen the relationship between parents and children.
Firstly, when children participate in creating guidelines and schedules, they are more likely to
believe the guidelines are important, accept them and follow them. To involve children, parents
can set up a family meeting. At the meeting, parents can discuss the schedule and ask children
for their input on decisions like what time everyone should be out of bed and dressed, when
breaks from schoolwork would work best and where each family member should be during
study time.
Besides that, parents can present some chores around the house, and children can choose
which they prefer. For example, they can also pick when or how they complete them. Apart from
that, children will be more open to hearing about what they need to do if they feel that their own
perspectives are understood.
When things aren’t working out, parents can try engaging in joint problem-solving with their
children, which means employing empathy, identifying the issue and finding ways to resolve it.
When parents provide reasons for why they are asking for something, children can
understand the importance of acting in particular ways. Reasons will be most effective when
they are meaningful to the children in terms of the children’s own goals. For example, a parent
can say that dividing family chores will help everyone have more time for fun activities after
dinner.

Penerbit Ilmu Bakti Sdn. Bhd Part 4 – Short Answer
Read the text below and answer questions 1 to 10.

April Partridge
April lives with her mother Nina and stepfather Nigel, both caterers. April works full-time
as a chef assistant at the Ivy in London’s West End while studying for a Professional Chef
Scholarship from Westminster Kingsway College.
“When I was 14, the only thing I made myself was spaghetti hoops on toast. But at 15, I did
two weeks’ work experience at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, making shepherd’s pies.” Positive
feedback from the club prompted her school to enter April for the RotaryYoung Chef competition,
and she was in the top four in the national final. “I made a rhubarb assiette consisting of a mini
rhubarb crumble tartlet, a vanilla panna cotta with rhubarb, and poached rhubarb sticks, and a
judge said it was ‘Michelin Star standard’. It made all the countless practices worthwhile.”
Then, talent-spotting Gary Lee – senior head chef at the Ivy – offered her a Saturday job. Her
very first day, she plated up a squash salad, then learned it was for Anthony Hopkins.
At 17, she quit school to train as an Ivy chef assistant. “I was quite shy, but now I’m one of
the lads,” she says. “I’d probably do this job without pay. It made me confident socially, although
I don’t have much social life. When I do go to a party, I have a blast, but then I’ll ask Mum: ‘Will
you pick me up at 11.30? I’m working with knives tomorrow’ and I have toast and go to bed.”
“She’s more methodical, artistic, hardworking and consistent than some boys with 10 years’
experience,” says Gary Lee. “She might be better than me.”
While Gary is April’s mentor, Heston Blumenthal is her hero: “The way he takes food to a
completely new level takes my breath away.”
Apart from junk food, what food wouldn’t April eat? “Nothing – I’d try anything, except
horses, cats and dogs. I’ve opened up to offal, squid and other things with faces.”
Asked her favourite place to eat out in Chingford, April replies: “My parents make such good
food, why would I want to go out to eat? Anyway, at the Ivy, I get breakfast at morning briefing,
lunch at 11 a.m. and dinner at 4.30.”

You are going to read an article about desserts. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose
from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (1 – 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to
use.
For each question, write the correct answer (A – H) in the space provided.

History of Desserts

The word “dessert” emerged in the 17th century. It is derived from the French verb
“desservir,” which means “to clear the table” in English.

Desserts in history, such as in the Middle Ages, revolved more around fruity sweet foods such
as jellies and wafers mixed with exotic fruits, nuts and butter. 1 C The next few reported
desserts include apple pies in 1381 and gingerbread in the 1400s.

Up until the 17th century, desserts were meshed together with savoury dishes and were used
as nothing more than palate cleansers. 2 C This spread in popularity of desserts is owed
to the vast sugar plantations in the New World that allowed sugar costs to go down. 3 C

The 17th century also saw the move of having desserts solely reserved for the end of meals
as opposed to having several small dessert courses as palate cleansers throughout. 4 C
Then, the industrial revolution brought forward the mass production of sweet foods such as
cakes.

Now, you can see that desserts are not just sweet foods that are eaten after a meal but they
are a kind of snack if you would like them to be. 5 C

We can see the evolution of desserts over the years. They have created ice creams and
chocolates as part of desserts. Most importantly, they are enjoyed not just by the young people
but also the adults and the elderly. 6 C No wonder people love to eat ice cream after a
break up.

Adapted from: https://www.whiskeddc.com/blogs/whisked-blog/history-of-desserts

A With reduced sugar prices, sugar could be used abundantly for sweet foods instead of being
relegated to a rare flavouring.

B Custards eventually evolved into sweet puddings in the 19th century.
C Indeed, the custard is known to be one of the first desserts ever eaten in the Middle Ages.
D However, the 17th century saw the advent of dessert cookbooks.
E There are cafes open dedicated to only serving desserts.
F It is so popular nowadays and even the adults are enjoying it.
G Everybody loves desserts.
H Desserts also help to release stress and make people happy.
