First Aid Camp Upon arriving, we were first shown to our dormitories. We (0) unpacked our bags and then went for our tea. After that, we listened to a series of lectures on how to (9) swiftly yet orderly from a disaster area, how to give first aid treatment to the injured and how to use the walkie-talkie (10) to rescue victims and call for aid. The next day, we were divided into groups. After breakfast, my team participated in a mock disaster (11) . We were told that a freak storm had occurred and we had to act out the scene. It was an eye-opener for me. Although there were (12) glitches and we were confused at what was happening in the beginning, the team leaders managed to coordinate well and the activity turned out to be a (13) . After lunch, we learnt (14) to pitch patrol tents, rescue victims and transport them to safety. In the evening, we did mass cooking. It was interesting to learn that simple (15) such as sardine, potatoes and rice can be used to cook up a nutritious meal for hundreds of survivors. On the last day, after breakfast, we packed up our bags and (16) to the main tent for the closing ceremony. Each of us wrote on a piece of paper what we had learnt (17) the duration of the camp. A few of us wrote out our testimony. I praised the organisers because I had learnt many new things about disaster management and survival tactics. Before (18) the camp, we were all given certificates for our participation. . A Nasty Trick Lydia was feeling bored (0) while staying at her grandmother’s house during the school holidays. One day, while her mother took her grandmother shopping, Lydia had the house to herself. Instead of occupying her time (9) , she spent it by rummaging through her grandmother’s storeroom. Suddenly an old, middle-sized wooden (10) caught her eye. Inside, she found two scary masks among some old costumes and wigs. Lydia took them out to have a look. Being bored and idle, a naughty (11) began to form in her mind. Lydia quickly put a mask and a wig on. Then, she stood (12) the mirror. She looked hideous! When she heard her mother and grandmother at the front door, she (13) went downstairs and hid behind the door. As the two ladies walked in, Lydia gave a (14) shout and jumped in front of them. Her grandmother screamed and fell to the floor in (15) . Shocked, Lydia’s mother (16) to see if Grandmother was all right. Lydia was in panic. She did not want any harm to come to her grandmother due to her practical joke. (17) her grandmother was not badly hurt but she did have a shock. Both Lydia and her mother helped her to lie down on the sofa so that she could recover. As for Lydia, she received such a scolding from her mother. Lydia immediately (18) for her thoughtless behaviour. She had learned her lesson and would not think of playing any more tricks on anyone again. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 15 24/2/2023 9:10:36 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Treating a Blister Blisters (0) are tender spots that fill up with fluid released by tiny blood vessels in an area where skin and tissues have been damaged. A blister is your body’s way of telling you that your skin and tissues have been damaged, and you need to (9) the injured area. You can treat a blister in a few (10) . If you have a blister, especially in your foot area, you can rest it by (11) your feet up for a while. You need to be patient (12) expect about a week to ten days before the fluid in the blister is reabsorbed by the body. (13) a bandage is also a common way to protect a blister. (14) , some doctors believe that just letting the skin breathe would allow it to heal faster naturally, while others might suggest that you use some antibacterial ointment to speed up (15) . If you are (16) to getting blisters, perhaps prevention is better than cure. Try wearing socks when you put on a new pair of shoes. Other than that, try buying leather footwear because they allow (17) to circulate, which keeps your feet dry. Never wear wet shoes by choice (18) the dragging will cause blisters to form. Finally, keep your feet dry. Foot powders may help in this. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 17 24/2/2023 9:10:36 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Burglary at the Museum It was (0) near closing time and the crowd at the museum was thinning. The visitors were preparing to (9) and the staff were packing up and making the final rounds before closing. Perhaps it was because of this mad rush, not many people were (10) to their surrounding. And this was also perhaps why the burglars chose this time to strike. The burglars entered just minutes before closing time. The entrance of the museum was briefly (11) and two men and a woman walked in, unnoticed. They entered the first hall where the famous local painting, Mahsuri was displayed. It was not a particularly big painting, but her radiance (12) up the room. The spotlights (13) the room gave her a life-like sense and the two men pretended to be very absorbed by the painting. They were talking to each other while referring (14) a booklet. At the end of the hall, the woman placed her large briefcase onto the floor and (15) a painting slightly. That immediately set the alarm system (16) . As the alarm started (17) , the two men quickly grabbed the Mahsuri painting and passed it to the woman. Then they made their getaway. Sliding the painting into her briefcase, she walked out in a hurry and left hall. Just then, the barrier descended and she (18) ! She knew that the guards were coming by now so she ran to another exit door on the side of the museum and let herself out. A van was waiting by the main gate and she successfully joined her two friends who had made their way there earlier. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 19 24/2/2023 9:10:36 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Hygiene in the Kitchen It is an important fact to remember that food carry some (0) form of bacteria. In the worst-case scenario, this (9) lead to food poisoning or something more serious. This risk can be reduced or eliminated by good food (10) and proper cooking. Here are some tips to (11) when you are in the kitchen. Always keep your hands, cooking utensils and food preparation surfaces (12) . Most importantly, never allow pets to climb onto any work surfaces because they may leave germs or bacteria that you may not be aware of. Dish cloths and dish towels must be washed and changed (13) . If possible, use the disposable types which should be replaced on a daily (14) . Do not buy food that have passed their expiration date. Avoid bulk buying fresh produce because fresh foods lose its nutritional value and freshness fast. That means buying (15) small amounts is a better choice. Before food is prepared, make sure all work surfaces and utensils are clean and dry. Separate chopping boards should be used for raw and cooked meat, fish and vegetables. All poultry must be (16) thawed before cooking. Once defrosted, meat should be (17) as soon as possible. Meat, poultry, fish, seafood and dairy products must be refrigerated. Food in the fridge or freezer should be covered. This is to (18) drips and cross-contamination from happening. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 21 24/2/2023 9:10:36 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

23 Practice 6 Refer to the text below and choose the best word for each space. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. Keeping Pets Pets are mainly kept as a (0) companion. Common domesticated pets include birds, cats, dogs, mice and fish. Sometimes unusual pets are kept (9) . There are records of elephants, iguanas and even wild animals such as bears being kept as pets. However, for such (10) animals, you would usually need a licence or some special permission to rear them. Another reason people like to keep pets is that they want to give and receive unconditional (11) from animals. It is common to see people who live alone keeping pets in their house. Perhaps it is a way to keep themselves from being lonely. But studies have (12) that keeping pets also has a therapeutic effect on humans. For example, children who live with pets learn (13) . They learn that all living creatures have a place in the world and should be respected. This is a worthy thing to (14) because when these children grow up, they will be able to feel compassion for all living things and not behave cruelly (15) them. However, having said that, not everyone (16) from keeping pets. Often, we find that people like having pets only for a short time. Most often, they have not thought through about the responsibilities and the lifespan of the pet in question. Many get tired of having to take care of their pets after a few years. This is when animal abuse and (17) come into the picture. Some animals remain locked up in their cages for days or weeks and are even left hungry. Others are just chased out into the streets to (18) for themselves. These are things a responsible pet owner should never do. Therefore, one needs to think thoroughly first before adopting a pet. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 23 24/2/2023 9:10:37 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

25 Practice 7 Refer to the text below and choose the best word for each space. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. Acne If you are a teenager, chances are you cannot wait to get rid of acne. If you are an adult, you cannot (0) believe it is back! Fortunately, there are better treatments now to handle this (9) in an effective way. The major determining (10) in who gets pimples is genes. It means you may have inherited a skin characteristic that (11) you more likely to develop acne. You have thousands of oil glands in the skin on your face, chest, and back that lubricate the skin by producing sebum. The sebum or oil flows from the glands (12) tiny ducts to the skin surface. Sometimes these oil ducts become plugged with sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells that shed from the lining of the duct. That is acne. Adults could possibly develop acne (13) imbalance in hormones. Stress is also a factor that can affect your hormones. For ladies, the use of cosmetics, especially heavy, oily (14) may clog pores and cause acne. But, fret not! No matter what is causing your acne, there are steps you can take to (15) it. Firstly, do not poke, pinch or pick on your acne. You risk spreading the bacteria onto other areas of your face and causing (16) acne to pop up. Instead, you may use some over-the-counter or prescribed medication to help lessen the breakout. Meanwhile, go easy on your face. Do not use a wash cloth or try to rub your acne away. Some teens try to wash their face ten times a day to get rid of it but in actual fact, acne has nothing to do with (17) . You may be over-washing your skin and irritating the sensitive skin on your face. Simply use a (18) soap on your face with warm water and wash only twice a day. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 25 24/2/2023 9:10:37 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

27 Practice 8 Refer to the text below and choose the best word for each space. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. The Venus Flytrap TheVenus Flytrap is a small, colourful carnivorous (0) plant . It is found in the subtropical wetlands in America, mainly near North and South Carolina. TheVenus Flytrap’s structure (9) about four to seven leaves which grow from a stem. It is actually a flowering plant, best known for its (10) ability attract, trap and eat its prey. The trap is made up of a jaw-like closing with two halves of the leaf that can move (11) each other. (12) the inner surfaces of these leaves, or lobes, are hair-like projections called ‘trichomes’ that cause the lobes to snap (13) when prey comes in contact with them. The plant uses sweet nectar to (14) its prey. Once a fly or a spider or any small insect comes in (15) with the hair-like projections, electrical signals cause the trap to slam shut. The insect’s continued (16) will cause the trap to seal and soon, digestive enzymes will be released to dissolve the victim’s soft tissues. The trap, or rather the plant, absorbs the nutrients from the prey and in about a week later it reopens its lobes, using the carcass to attract new (17) . If you try to (18) this plant with something that does not move, the lobes will not snap shut. You will need to move the food around, imitating a live prey before the trap shuts tight. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 27 24/2/2023 9:10:37 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

29 Questions 19 to 26 Practice 1 You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. Lily, an amateur photographer, picked up photography as a hobby last year when her parents gave her a Canon EOS 700D Rebel T5i camera for her 17th birthday. She had never expected to get such a wonderful gift. Lily had always wanted to take pictures of the people around her and also her beloved pet dog. However, she never had a proper camera. Before her birthday, she had mentioned to her parents that she had wanted to use her own savings to get her own camera. She was so determined to get the camera that she spent many weeks scrolling through websites and scanning every book in the state library for camera recommendations. She even did research on what type of lens to buy. Lily realised that it was important to get a good quality lens as it will determine how detailed the photographs will be. If she had to use her own money, she would have a lot of big decisions to make as she was on a tight budget. Therefore, she was very grateful that her parents got her the camera. Since Lily and her family travel more during the school holidays, she takes the opportunity to use her camera at that time. Her younger brother, who also shares her passion in photography, sometimes uses the camera too. Most people think that photography is just taking pictures of eyecatching sceneries and landscapes. However in reality, there is so much more than meets the eye. For example, there are fashion photography, aerial photography, documentary photography and the list goes on. Lily is a huge fan of food photography. She also enjoys photojournalism and candid photography. In general, photojournalism conveys a strong and powerful message through the use of a photograph. This type of photography often reminds her of humanitarian rights, such as how people in other parts of the world are fighting for their freedom while we live comfortably in Malaysia. She also enjoys taking candid photographs because the subjects of the photograph are unaware that they are being photographed, thus making them appear less tense and more relaxed. Lily feels that photography has allowed her to see things from a different perspective. For example, when she photographs something at a lower level, she will get a different effect from when it is taken at the eye level. Furthermore, she has learnt to express herself more creatively through photography. She is also more innovative by making use of all the resources she has. For example, she has to find substitutes to create dramatic effects in her photographs, to resemble those she sees in magazines. Along the way, Lily has learned a lot on how to improve her photography skills. In order to learn some inexpensive and creative tricks to add some flair to her photographs, she often browses videos on YouTube. She also practises taking lots of pictures as she believes that it is the best way to hone one’s skills. Although Lily feels that she still has a long way to go to really excel in photography, she knows for sure that when she snaps a picture, the moment freezes for an eternity. When she later looks back at her photo album, she will always be reminded of the good memories and all the people she loves. 31 Practice 2 You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. A 20-strong group of female turtles came ashore at night, crawling up Chagar Hutang beach at Redang Island. They were watched by Aziz Mustaffa, a ranger together with several other conservationists. The turtles dug holes and laid thousands of eggs. They then swam back into the sea. On the same beach which is 350-metre (1,100-foot) and one of the busiest nesting sites in Malaysia, baby turtles were hatching and scurrying into the waters. Aziz says that the turtles and eggs are Malaysia’s national treasure. He feels that he is their godparent and he wants to protect them for future generations. It gives him joy to see the huge turtles returning here to nest. Aziz was a former turtle egg poacher. He used to collect turtle eggs from a beach in Terengganu and sell them. However Aziz now protects turtles’ nesting sites. It had been an uphill struggle to defend the endangered reptiles which swim ashore to Malaysia from the South China Sea to lay their eggs in the sand. There are several turtle species, such as the Green turtles, Hawksbills and Leatherbacks which come to nest on Malaysia’s coasts. This has attracted many tourists who enjoy watching the babies hatching and scurrying off into the sea. Unfortunately over the years their numbers have dwindled dramatically. This is due to worsening maritime pollution, coastal development and people taking their eggs, which are a popular delicacy in Malaysia. Conservationists, however, have been making progress. They have been successful in persuading some people like Aziz to change their ways. Furthermore the state of Terengganu, which is a major nesting site, has announced it will ban the trade in eggs. Apart from humans, the turtle eggs too are eaten by monitor lizards. Even if the turtle eggs are not eaten, many of the baby turtles that do make it to the waters are gobbled up by sharks, crabs and predatory fish. Aziz, who comes from a poor fishing family on the island, remembers his poaching days. He used to hide in the bushes by the beach and shortly after the eggs were laid, he would race out to grab them. Often there would be brawls with rival collectors. Aziz and his rivals would then either sell off the eggs to traders or eat the eggs. Since the villagers’ diet was limited, the eggs were a key source of protein. That however began to change as the villagers’ incomes increased and different types of food became available to them. As the number of tourists flocking to the island to see the creatures grew, Aziz started to realise that there were more benefits for the community in protecting turtle nests rather stealing the eggs from them. He realised that if these migratory species were protected, the villagers would be able sustain their livelihoods. Aziz then began working for Universiti Malaysia Terengganu’s turtle research unit to protect the creatures. He earned about US$400 a month. Aziz currently works with two other rangers and a group of volunteers. They protect the eggs from poachers and predators like monitor lizards. According to Aziz the villagers on Redang Island now enjoy a stable income from tourism as a growing number of people want to watch the Green turtles lay eggs. Mohamad Uzair Rusli, a biologist who is working on saving the sea turtles at the university agrees that giving residents a way to earn money from looking after the turtles was the best way to safeguard their future. He however warned that if the voracious appetite for the turtle eggs is not tackled, the creatures still face an uncertain future. In Terengganu, licensed collectors are still allowed to operate and the sale of most turtle species’ eggs remains legal. However following continuous pressure from conservation groups, the state authorities have pledged to ban the trade in all turtle eggs by the end of 2020. At present, the state only prohibits the trade in eggs of Leatherback turtles. This was after their numbers fell dramatically. The trade of other turtle species eggs found in the state is still allowed. It will indeed be difficult to change a centuries-old tradition. Recently, it was discovered that eggs were being sold openly at a busy market in Terengganu’s state capital, Kuala Terengganu. Buyers pay the equivalent of USD$12 for 10 eggs. Nor Jannah, 32, a turtle egg trader said business was good and did not think that eating the eggs was a threat to turtles. She felt that it was impossible that turtles would become extinct as she had been eating and selling turtle eggs since she was 12 years old. 33 Practice 3 You are going to read an extract from a story. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. Yesterday afternoon, my mother took me up to London to see the dentist. He found one hole. It was in a back tooth and he filled it without hurting me too much. After that, we went to a café. I had a banana split and my mother had a cup of coffee. By the time we got up to leave, it was about six o’clock. When we came out of the café it had started to rain. “We must get a taxi,” my mother said. We were wearing ordinary hats and coats, and it was raining quite hard. “Why don’t we go back into the café and wait for it to stop?” I said. I wanted another of those banana splits. They were gorgeous. “It isn’t going to stop,” my mother said. “We must go home.” We stood on the pavement in the rain, looking for a taxi. Lots of them came by but they all had passengers inside them. “I wish we had a car with a chauffeur,” my mother said. Just then, a man came up to us. He was a small man and he was pretty old, probably seventy or more. He raised his hat politely and said to my mother, “Excuse me, I do hope you will excuse me. . .” He had a fine white moustache, bushy white eyebrows and a wrinkly pink face. He was sheltering under an umbrella which he held high over his head. “Yes?” my mother said, very cool and distant. “I wonder if I could ask a small favour of you,” he said. “It is only a very small favour.” I saw my mother looking at him suspiciously. She is a suspicious person, my mother. She is especially suspicious of two things – strange men and boiled eggs. When she cuts the top off a boiled egg, she pokes around inside it with her spoon as though expecting to find a mouse or something. With strange men she has a golden rule which says, “The nicer the man seems to be, the more suspicious you must become.” This little old man was particularly nice. He was polite. He was well-spoken. He was well-dressed. He was a real gentleman. The reason I knew he was a gentleman was because of his shoes. “You can always spot a gentleman by the shoes he wears” was another of my mother’s favourite sayings. This man had beautiful brown shoes. “The truth of the matter is,” the little man was saying, “I’ve got myself into a bit of a scrape. I need some help. Not much, I assure you. It’s almost nothing in fact, but I do need it. You see, madam, old people like me often become terribly forgetful, . . .” My mother’s chin was up and she was staring down at him along the full length of her nose. It is a fearsome thing, this frosty-nosed stare of my mother’s. Most people go to pieces completely when she gives it to them. I once saw my own headmistress begin to stammer and simper like an idiot when my mother gave her a really foul frosty-noser. But the little man on the pavement with the umbrella over his head didn’t bat an eyelid. He gave a gentle smile and said, “I beg you to believe, madam that I am not in the habit of stopping ladies in the street and telling them my troubles.” “I should hope not,” my mother said. I felt quite embarrassed by my mother’s sharpness. I wanted to say to her, “Oh, Mummy, for heaven’s sake, he’s a very very old man, and he’s sweet and polite, and he’s in some sort of trouble, so don’t be so beastly to him.” But I didn’t say anything. The little man shifted his umbrella from one hand to the other. “I’ve never forgotten it before,” he said. “You’ve never forgotten what?” my mother asked sternly. “My wallet,” he said. “I must have left it in my other jacket. Isn’t that the silliest thing to do?” “Are you asking me to give you money?” my mother said. “Oh, good gracious me, not!” he cried. “Heaven forbid I should ever do that!” “Then what are you asking?” my mother said. “Do hurry up. We’re getting soaked to the skin here.” “I know you are,” he said. “And that is why I’m offering you this umbrella of mine to protect you, and to keep forever, if . . . if only . . .” “If only what?” my mother said. “If only you would give me in return a pound for my taxi-fare just to get me home.” Adapted from The Umbrella Man by Roald Dahl 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 33 24/2/2023 9:10:37 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. 35 Practice 4 You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. Sydnie Uemoto, a young pilot, was flying together with her co-pilot, Dave McMahon from Oahu to the island of Hawaii. They were just two young pilots who needed the flying practice and were taking a short trip with no passengers. When the plane they were flying, a twin-engine Piper Apache, was at 1,524 metres (5,000 feet) above the Pacific Ocean, Uemoto, 23 and McMahon, 26 heard a strange sound in the engines. This was shortly after three in the afternoon. When McMahon brought the plane down to 1,000 metres, the engines appeared to run more smoothly. Then, suddenly, the pilots lost power to the right and left engine. The plane began to lose altitude. The pilots tried their best to restart the engines but nothing worked. McMahon then handed the controls to Uemoto. He then propped open the cockpit door so that they wouldn’t get trapped inside once they landed in the ocean. Uemoto made a last distress call to air traffic control and told them their location. Soon after, she landed the plane in the Pacific ocean. McMahon and Uemoto were violently thrown forward. McMahon opened his eyes in a daze but he was unhurt. His co-pilot was slumped next to him. She was conscious but bleeding. The water was pouring in through the open door. McMahon quickly climbed out onto the wing and urged Uemoto to follow him. Uemoto looked confused but she unsteadily got up. She had broken her nose and blood was pouring down her face. Uemoto worried that the blood would attract the deadly sharks that lived in the waters around Hawaii. McMahon again asked her to follow him or she would be submerged. Uemoto told him about the sharks but he told her not to think about that. Uemoto then slowly walked towards the door. Along the way, she picked up two life jackets. Uemoto and McMahon jumped into the ocean as the plane sank. McMahon was not too worried about being rescued as the day was clear and the Coast Guard knew where they were. But Uemoto was panicking. McMahon managed to calm her down. A few hours later, they spotted a US Navy plane in the sky. McMahon joyfully waved his life jacket as the plane flew directly overhead. Unfortunately, the plane had not seen them and it flew away. After that, a few more rescue planes appeared but unfortunately they were not spotted. When nightfall came, McMahon began to feel afraid. Uemoto felt the same. She also realised that the current had shifted direction and the waves were moving southwest now. Uemoto, who was a Hawaiian native, knew that there was nothing to the south of Hawaii. The nearest land was Antarctica, which was11,990 kilometres away. The two pilots quickly decided to swim to the volcanoes at Kailua-Kona which was 40 km away. That night at around ten, Uemoto’s legs started to cramp. She then swam with her arms and let her legs drag behind her. McMahon was in a worse position. After more than eight hours in the water, he was extremely exhausted and had cramps too. Uemoto, who was swimming on her stomach, asked McMahon wrap his arms around her knees. Uemoto then pulled the 1.6-metre McMahon with her arms while he kicked. Suddenly Uemoto felt unbearable pain. In the moonlight, she saw a box jellyfish clinging to her arm. Uemoto gasped for air as her body cramped up. She then fell unconscious. McMahon hurriedly held on to her and tried to keep her head above the water, even though he too had been stung. When Uemoto finally came around they floated for a few minutes. They then tried their best to continue swimming onward. That morning, when the sun rose, the two pilots were happy to see the island of Hawaii close by. Their happiness was short-lived. Suddenly, Uemoto and McMahon saw a shadow in front of them. It was a shark which was about three metres beneath the surface. The shark circled them for about 30 minutes. It then disappeared. The pilots breathed a sigh of relief. As noon was approaching, they saw a helicopter. They waved their hands and hoped the helicopter would spot them but it did not. The both of them had been in the water for almost 20 hours and were both beyond exhaustion. Uemoto was almost ready to give up when the helicopter returned. They both waved frantically. To their relief, the helicopter 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 35 24/2/2023 9:10:37 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

36 came towards them. Uemoto and McMahon knew that if they had been alone, they would not have survived. However together, they had made it because they gave each other strength. 37 Practice 5 You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. Last year, Joe Ann Liew decided to quit her job and start a new chapter in her life. She wanted to get closer to nature. Liew, who lives in a condo, wanted a jungle in her house. This inspired her to learn and to understand more about house plants. Armed with her knowledge, Liew launched Wild Oasis a few months ago. She provides house plant styling service to help clients fill their homes with greenery. Liew’s goal is to bring more greenery into homes of urbanites especially those who live in apartments and condominiums. She has always loved nature and is curious about plants. During the past year, Liew learned landscaping and farming too. She learned that the small plants that live under canopies of larger plants are the ones people use as house plants. Unfortunately she learned it the hard way that this doesn’t always work. Liew had bought a few plants and brought them indoors in order to see how they grew. She then realised that they couldn’t survive. According to Liew, this could be due to many factors such as species, type of plant, type of soil used and even where the plant is placed in a home. Liew says her clients tell her that they don’t have a green thumb and ask her to recommend an easy plant. However at the same time they want trendy and exotic plants. Liew advises them that there is no such thing as a ‘simple’ plant as all house plants need some level of care and attention. It is no different than having pets. According to Liew, if people want their plant to grow well in their home, they must consider the humidity, lighting and even the location of the plant. She discovered that if they like to place their plants in places like the kitchen or next to their TV cabinet, they need to bring the plant out to give it sunlight once in a while. However, they must not do it too often. Liew prefers plants with big leaves when decorating a space. She likes placing them high and low, and working with their shapes. In order to figure out what plants are suitable, Liew has to see the space for herself. Then with the aid of a few gadgets and also her clients, she will find out the amount of light in the space and also whether it is wet or dry, still or windy and other conditions. Liew has a partner who has a nursery and she provides her with all types of plants. When Liew is doing a project, she will visit her partner’s nursery and check out all the plants. She will then decide which plant or plants to get, based on the client’s preference and available space. Liew too believes that some plants have a personality. She enjoys talking to her plants. Once she tried to grow a Calathea plant. It took her about a year. She watered the pinstriped leafy plant daily but it never grew taller. Then one time she went to Hong Kong for a week and asked her husband to take care of the plant. Strangely when she came back, the plant had grown bigger and had even blossomed. She asked her husband how he had made the plant grow and he said he had just watered the plant. Liew was puzzled as she too had done the same. Her husband then told her that it was because she talked too much to the plants! From then onwards Liew stopped talking to the plants. She just waters them quietly and they grow. Apart from styling plants, Liew and her cousin provide a free photography service for seniors. This idea came about during the MCO while she was watching a Korean drama. Liew and her cousin provide professionally-taken photos for the elderly. Not only are the photos of the well-dressed seniors beautiful, it is also an unforgettable experience for the seniors. Furthermore, it is a treasured memory for their children. Liew says that the seniors felt like they were models. At times, they would request if they could wear their fancier clothes. One senior even asked if she could take a photo with her daughter because she had never really hugged her daughter before. This project was initially only meant to be until the end of the year, however they have decided to extend it to January. 39 Practice 6 You are going to read an extract from a story. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D. The day of the party drew near, and Madame Loisel seemed sad, uneasy and anxious. Her dress was ready, however. One evening her husband said to her, “What’s the matter with you? You’ve been very odd for the last three days.” “I’m utterly miserable at not having any jewels, not a single stone, to wear,” she replied. “I shall look absolutely dull. I would almost rather not go to the party.” “Wear flowers,” he said. “They’re very smart at this time of the year. For ten francs you could get two or three gorgeous roses.” She was not convinced. “No . . . there’s nothing so humiliating as looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women.” “How stupid you are!” exclaimed her husband. “Go and see Madame Forestier and ask her to lend you some jewels. You know her quite well enough for that.” She uttered a cry of delight. “That’s true. I never thought of it.” The next day, she went to see her friend and told her, her trouble. Madame Forestier went to her dressing-table, took up a large box, opened it, and said, “Choose, my dear.” First she saw some bracelets, then a pearl necklace, then a Venetian cross in gold and gems, of exquisite workmanship. She tried the effect of the jewels before the mirror, hesitating, unable to make up her mind to leave them, to give them up. She kept on asking: “Haven’t you anything else?” “Yes. Look for yourself. I don’t know what you would like best.” Suddenly she discovered, in a black satin case, a superb diamond necklace; her heart began to beat covetously. Her hands trembled as she lifted it. She fastened it round her neck, upon her high dress, and remained in ecstasy at the sight of herself. Then, with hesitation, she asked in anguish, “Could you lend me this, just this alone?” “Yes, of course.” She flung herself on her friend, embraced her frenziedly, and went away with her treasure. The day of the party arrived. Madame Loisel was a success. She was the prettiest woman present, elegant, graceful, smiling, and quite above herself with happiness. All the men stared at her, inquired her name, and asked to be introduced to her. All the Under-Secretaries of State were eager to waltz with her. The Minister noticed her. She danced madly, ecstatically, drunk with pleasure. She left at about four o’clock in the morning. Since midnight her husband had been dozing in a deserted little room, in company with three other men whose wives were having a good time. He threw over her shoulders the garments he had brought for them to go home in, modest everyday clothes, whose poverty clashed with the beauty of the ball dress. She was conscious of this and was anxious to hurry away, so that she should not be noticed by the other women putting on their costly furs. Loisel restrained her. “Wait a little. You’ll catch a cold in the open. I’m going to fetch a cab.” But she did not listen to him and rapidly descended the staircase. When they were out in the street they could not find a cab; they began to look for one, shouting at the drivers whom they saw passing in the distance. They walked down towards the Seine, desperate and shivering. At last they found on the quay one of those old night prowling carriages. It brought them to their door in the Rue des Martyrs, and sadly they walked up to their own apartment. It was the end, for her. As for him, he was thinking that he must be at the office at ten. She took off the garments in which she had wrapped her shoulders, so as to see herself in all her glory before the mirror. But suddenly she uttered a cry. The necklace was no longer round her neck! “What’s the matter with you?” asked her husband, already half undressed. She turned towards him in the utmost distress. “I . . . I . . . I no longer have Madame Forestier’s necklace . . .” He started with astonishment. “What! . . . Impossible!” They searched in the folds of her dress, in the folds of the coat, in the pockets, everywhere. They could not find it. “Are you sure that you still had it on when you came away from the ball?” he asked. “Yes, I touched it in the hall at the Ministry.” “But if you had lost it in the street, we should have heard it fall.” “Yes. Probably we should. Did you take the number of the cab?” “No. You didn’t notice it, did you?” Adapted from The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 39 24/2/2023 9:10:37 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Write your answers in the space given. A Lesson Learnt the Hard Way One day, when I was about fourteen, I was feeling bored. 27 My grandparents forbade me to go out to sea that day as they had heard that a storm would be coming. I ignored their warning. When my grandparents were busy, I quietly sneaked out of the house and went to my gandfather’s boat. I did not believe the storm would be coming soon. 28 I got on the boat and rowed to the middle of the sea. I then took out my fishing rod and began to fish. As I was fishing, a strong wind began to blow and suddenly the sky turned dark. I quickly put away my fishing rod and began to row back to shore. 29 I just could not control the boat. After what seemed like hours of floating aimlessly at sea, I ended on a remote island. Just then, it began to rain heavily. There was no shelter to be found on the island. I was soon soaking wet. 30 After a few hours, the rain finally stopped. I felt cold and hungry. I walked around the island and soon found some fruits. They were sweet and juicy. When night time came, I went back to the coconut tree from earlier and slept underneath it. I had a very uncomfortable night. 31 As to be expected, I woke up the next morning feeling exhausted. I again ate the fruits that I had found for breakfast. After breakfast, I decided to go back to my grandfather’s boat and somehow row back home even though I had no idea where I was. 32 I felt so relieved. I jumped and yelled as loudly as I could to get their attention. Luckily one of the rescue boat crew saw me. They quickly came and took me home. When I saw my grandparents, I hugged and apologised to them for causing them to worry. They forgave me but made me promise I would never do something so reckless again. I promised I would listen to their warnings next time. Paper 1 - Reading and Use of English Gapped Text UNIT 4 Part 4 (6 marks) 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 41 24/2/2023 9:10:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. 42 A I just sat under a coconut tree which offered me very little protection. E I shivered and felt very tired. B I saw a man on the beach. F The sky was very clear and the sun was shining brightly. C I then decided to take my grandfather’s boat out to sea to catch some fish. G On the beach, I saw a rescue boat passing by. D It felt as I was being eaten alive by the mosquitoes. H Unfortunately, the wind was just too strong. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 42 24/2/2023 9:10:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

43 Practice 2 You are going to read a story about a group of friends going on an outing. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Write your answers in the space given. A Memorable Trip Although I had gotten good results for my final examination, I was feeling a little down. My father had got a job in another state and the whole family was moving there at the end of the year. I loved my current school as I had wonderful friends and teachers here. One of my close friends, Janet knew how I was feeling. She proposed a picnic at Cinta Waterfalls with our friends. 27 The thought of a picnic with my friends really cheered me up. Janet and I then told our other friends about the picnic. Our friends, Yati, Kumari and Su Ling thought it was a great idea. We decided to have the picnic on a Saturday. Cinta Waterfalls was about half an hour’s journey by bus from our town. On that Saturday, we met at the bus stop in town at around half past seven in the morning. The bus soon arrived and we boarded it to the waterfalls. 28 The scenery at the waterfalls was just as we remembered it. It was simply breathtaking. The birds were chirping and the sound of the waterfalls was calming to the soul. We happily laid out our mat next to the waterfalls and put our picnic things on it. 29 The water was cool and refreshing. At around noon, we began to feel hungry. All of us could not wait to eat the delicious picnic food we had brought. 30 Yati had brought chicken rendang, Kumari had brought cupcakes while Su Ling had brought pudding and orange juice. We had a fantastic time eating and drinking next to the waterfalls. After lunch, we rested for a short while. Some of us even dozed off. After that, we gathered our rubbish and put it in a garbage bag. We then explored the forest. 31 My friends and I were so busy exploring we did not realise that it was getting dark. 32 We took the garbage bag and headed out to the bus stop. There was a big dustbin at the bus stop where we threw the rubbish. After a short wait, the bus arrived. I will never forget this outing as it was one of my most memorable outings with my friends. Although I have made new friends at my new school, I will always treasure my friendship with my old friends and the memory of the wonderful picnic we had. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 43 24/2/2023 9:10:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. 44 A We walked for an hour to get to the waterfalls. E I had brought fried noodles while Janet had brought dumplings. B We then changed into our swimming costumes and dove excitedly into the water. F We arrived at the waterfalls by half past eight in the morning. C The last time we had gone to the waterfalls was a year back. G Yati decided to explore further into the forest. D Yati then reminded us that we had better head back home. H There were many interesting plants and insects there. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 44 24/2/2023 9:10:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Write your answers in the space given. How Social Media Affects Teens Teens these days are glued to their phones if they are not busy with their schoolwork. Most of the time they will be on social media platforms. But, is this good for them? 27 The survey asked 14 – 24-year-olds in the UK how social media platforms impacted their health and well-being. It was discovered that social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook all have at one point or another made them feel depressed, anxious, lonely and have poor body image. Before the existence and popularity of social media platforms, teens would occupy their time by chatting on the phone, or hanging out at the mall with friends. These face-to-face social interactions actually helped teens to experiment and try out new skills with their friends. 28 When teens communicate mostly through a screen, they will not be able to learn about body language, facial expressions and vocal reactions. 29 This might lead them to having problems making and keeping friends. Another problem that modern teens face is cyberbullying. It is easier for teens to be cruel to others on social media platforms because they cannot see how it makes the other person feel. A majority of teens would never be cruel to their peers in real life. Teens too want to be accepted by their peers. Therefore, many of them care about their image. They post cool or pretty photos of themselves so that they can get as many likes as possible. 30 Furthermore, when teens scroll through their feeds and see how great everyone seems, it only adds to the pressure of looking good. This may lead them to feeling inadequate. 31 If they are waiting for a response from their online friend and it does not come, they know their friend is ignoring them or is no longer interested in being friends. This may end up making them feel lonely. In the past, if a teen no longer wanted to be friends with someone, they would tell them face-to-face. Nowadays the friend might just disappear from their screen, and the teen would be wondering what he or she had done. 32 This too will affect one's self-esteem. In conclusion, teens should limit their use of social media platforms. They should also try to have friends in real life. It will teach them how to communicate properly. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 45 24/2/2023 9:10:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

46 A Since it is so easy to be connected these days, teens know when they’re being ignored. E Most teens like to know where their friends are all the time. B Recently, a survey was conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health. F Therefore, when they do have to communicate with someone face to face, they may have trouble getting their message across. C He or she might imagine the worst about themselves. G Teens like to post their pictures on social media platforms. D Modern teens, however, learn communication skills while looking at a screen, instead of with other people. H If a teen does not get many likes or comments, this can lead to them feeling depressed. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 46 24/2/2023 9:10:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Buying a Camera Mark had recently gotten interested in photography. His friend Abdul, who was an avid photographer, suggested he get a Pikon C2411 camera. He said it was suitable for beginners as it was quite easy to use but shoots great photos. 27 Abdul also suggested that Mark get his camera online. He said Mark could get it at a much cheaper price than at a retail store. Abdul said that if Mark bought it during a sale, he might get better deals. Mark thought it was a good idea. 28 The camera that Abdul had suggested was about RM2,000. Mark only had RM1,500 in his savings. He decided to get a part-time job. Mark’s uncle owned a cafe in town. Mark asked him if he could work there part-time. His uncle said he could work there on weekends which was their busy period. 29 Working at the cafe was not easy but he did not quit. Mark was determined to buy the camera. Mark had to work in the cafe for two months before he had enough money to buy the camera. When Mark finally had enough money, he asked for Abdul’s help to buy the camera online. Mark had never bought anything online before and so he was feeling a bit nervous. 30 Abdul had previously bought a few things online. The boys first checked a few online shops to see where the best deals were. They finally decided on a popular online shop. Not only was the camera cheaper than the other shops, they were also providing free shipping and a camera bag. 31 He again felt nervous as he keyed in his personal details and payment information. He worried that something would go wrong. However, everything went smoothly. He was informed that he would get his camera in two weeks’ time. Mark could not wait for his new camera to arrive. He thanked Abdul for his help. For the next two weeks, Mark eagerly waited for his camera to arrive. Then, as promised by the online shop, the camera arrived two weeks later. Mark called Abdul over when the parcel arrived. They opened the parcel together excitedly. Mark and Abdul both checked the camera thoroughly. 32 Mark sighed in relief. Mark then wrote a good review for the online shop. He was glad that he had bought his camera online. 01 TEXT BI F5 3P.indd 47 24/2/2023 9:10:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
