Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D to fill in each blank. Cardamom Cardamom, the queen of all spices, has a history as old as the human race. It is the dried fruit of (0) a perennial plant. A warm, humid climate, loamy soil rich in organic matter, distributed rainfall and special cultivation and processing methods all combine to make Indian cardamom truly (9) in aroma, flavour, and size. It has a parrot green colour. Two (10) of cardamom are produced in India. The first type is the large one, which has little significance as it is not traded in the futures market. It (11) cultivated in north-eastern area of the country. The second type is produced in the southern states and these are traded in the futures market. These are mainly cultivated in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. As per the futures market rules, only 7 mm quality was previously traded (12) exchanges. But later, it relaxed its norms and now 6 mm quality is also traded on the exchanges. Cardamom is an expensive spice. Indian cardamom is (13) in two main varieties: Malabar cardamom and Mysore cardamom. The Mysore variety contains leaves of cineol, limonene (14) hence is more aromatic. India, the world’s largest producer and exporter, emerged as the leading producer and exporter (15) cardamom. The main harvest season of cardamom in India is (16) August–February. Cardamom reaches at yielding stage two years (17) the plantation. Kerala is the main producer of cardamom and contributes up to 60% in total production. Karnataka produces around 25% of the total production of cardamom. Ooty is the main producer of cardamom in Tamil Nadu and contributes around 10–15% of the total production. (18) India, Guatemala also produces around 1,000–2,000 tonne of cardamom per year. Due to low quality of cardamom from Guatemala, it remains available at cheaper rates. 0 A a B an C the D – 9 A unique B common C ordinary D familiar 10 A type B typed C types D typing 11 A is B was C are D were 12 A on B up C above D under 13 A know B knows C known D knowing 14 A an B and C but D thus 15 A of B off C for D from 16 A among B including C between D midst 17 A later B after C before D earlier 18 A Beside B Besides C Furthermore D Therefore Koleksi KM SPM BI (KM1) 5th.indd 5 25/8/2023 9:03:10 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. 6 SULIT SULIT 1119/1 1119/1 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) Part 3 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. Life really is strange, Caroline decided as a tear trickled down into the corner of her mouth. Just when she thought it held nothing for her—now, when she was clinging to the railings of a road bridge, 100 feet above the river mouth, ready to jump—why should it be now that she was aware of a comforting, warm summer breeze brushing around her, sifting through her long, fine blonde hair? And why should she now notice a dazzling flock of seagulls soaring in the clear blue sky, at home in their element? In all her 19 years, Caroline could not remember being so struck by the beauty of these simple things. Trust her to notice when it was too late. And it was too late, because she had made her mind up. She had to do something to take the pain away: the pain of abandonment by her mother and years of negligence in various foster homes. Nothing she had tried so far worked for long enough. She sighed, and loosened her grip. The pressure of the railings eased along her back and legs, and glancing down at the churning muddy waters below, she breathed in, closed her eyes and let go. “Hello there!” A voice from behind her shouted. Startled, Caroline fumbled and regained her grip on the rails then turned her head sharply to see who was there. She saw a short, dark-haired, middle aged woman in a long flowery dress looking up at her. “Go away!” Caroline hissed, trying to focus ahead. “You put me off. Go away and leave me alone.” “Why are you up there?” The woman asked, shielding her eyes from the sun with her hand. “I’m painting the railings for winter!” snapped Caroline. “I’m going to kill myself, can’t you tell?” “Oh, I can see that!” the woman said, calmly. “I mean why would you want to?” Caroline rolled her eyes. “What business is it of yours?” she said, feeling the pressure of the railings once more digging into her back as her grip tightened in anger. The woman dropped her hand and seemed to be inspecting the strap across the front of her open toed sandals. “It’s none of my business, I suppose. In that I don’t even know you. But I can’t help thinking it’s a terrible thing to do, on such a fine sunny day.” “What difference does the weather make?” The woman shrugged her shoulders. “Well, you look like you would still have quite a few sunny days to look forward to—in the normal way of things—and it seems a shame that you won’t be here to appreciate them.” “That’s so lame. Don’t jump, it’s such a nice day! As if that’s a good enough excuse,” Caroline sneered. The woman looked hurt. “I didn’t mean it like that. You must have a good reason to be up there, after all.” Caroline did not respond, but the woman carried on anyway. “I’d like to think there is something worth coming down for. But only you can decide if life is worth living. I’m just telling you how I see it. If you could see it my way, you wouldn’t want to do it for sure. But I’m not you, am I?” Caroline frowned. “You’re talking rubbish.” “Maybe,” the woman agreed. “Or maybe I know what you’re going through because I’ve been there myself.” Yeah, right! Caroline thought as she turned and looked at the woman again, who was smiling encouragingly at her. Was she lying? Could she really know anything about her pain? Of course, it was obviously a ploy to get her attention and stop her from jumping. But she was intrigued; she wanted to know what this woman could say that could possibly make a difference. “OK. You’ve got me! I’ll buy it. Give me your best shot.” Over the next hour, the woman—whose named turned out to be Joyce—talked, and Caroline talked too. It seemed easy with Joyce: she cared, she had had a hard life, and knew all about the pain. And for the first time ever, Caroline felt that she had been listened to, and more importantly, understood. Joyce did not have the answer to all her problems, but she helped her find a few good reasons for continuing. She was halfway down from the railings, determined—with Joyce’s offer of help—to put her life together, when the bridge security guard drew up in his little white van, with the orange flashing light. “Get down from there!” he growled at Caroline. “I thought I told you last time that I didn’t want to see you here again.” “You mean you’ve done this before?” said Joyce, eyebrows raised. Caroline looked sheepish. “Last week. I didn’t have the nerve to go through with it then. But I would have this time if it hadn’t been for you.” Koleksi KM SPM BI (KM1) 5th.indd 6 25/8/2023 9:03:10 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

1119/1 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) 8 SULIT SULIT 1119/1 Part 4 Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about death of jobs. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. Write your answers in the box provided. DEATH OF JOBS? We are living in a time of major change in the labour market. Recent studies have predicted that over the next 20 years, millions of jobs are at risk of being lost to robotics. Previous job-replacing changes were limited to tasks requiring human brawn. 27 If managed well, this revolution is not necessarily a cause for concern. Since the first Industrial Revolution, every new labour-saving technology has been met with anxiety about the impact on jobs. However, concerns over mass unemployment have never materialised. 28 Efficiencies gained through new technologies reduce the cost of production, which, when passed on to the consumer, increases spending power, stimulates demand, and creates new jobs. Rather than making humans redundant, technology has simply shifted work to other areas. At its core, the education system is characterised by competition between classmates, with students learning and being assessed as individuals. 29 In an era of skilled factory work, this mass public examination system was designed to assess and rank school-leavers on their ability to recall information and apply the standard methods required. Yet today, methods and recall are the very things that are easiest to automate. Instead, soft skills such as resourcefulness, creativity, and emotional intelligence are the likely domains where humans will retain a comparative advantage. 30 Even though today, online communication over vast distances is possible at almost zero cost, face-to-face interactions are still the key engine of collaboration and growth. Many people today, particularly younger generations, will work in jobs that do not exist yet, in industries that have not been created. Most will change jobs multiple times, and brief periods of unemployment for people at all levels will become more common. 31 A young person today begins to make choices in education that affect the skills for their career as much as a decade before entering the workforce, by which time technology and consumer preferences will have altered significantly. 32 There need to be much stronger links between schools and employers. The onus will also be on employers, who bear the responsibility for helping young people learn about employment. Career guidance must develop a focus not simply on helping people to work but also on helping those already in work to progress. A It is because these are skills where computers complement our abilities rather than a substitute for them. B It is vital that students, teachers, and parents, can access quality and timely information on the likely skills needed by employers in the future. C Yet, as technology and globalisation progress, working with others is becoming increasingly important. D Big data will no doubt prove pivotal to solve this issue. E In fact, technology has been a net creator of employment. F Career choice will be difficult for everyone in time to come. G Consequently, there is a need to ensure better career guidance. H The next wave of technology will be replacing human brains. [6 marks] Koleksi KM SPM BI (KM1) 5th.indd 8 25/8/2023 9:03:10 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

30 SULIT SULIT 1119/1 1119/1 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) I was 16 years old when I first announced I wanted to run my own animal sanctuary. My friends did not take me seriously and my family thought it was a noble idea but too massive for one person to achieve. After that, I kept my dream a secret until one of my teachers suggested that I volunteer at an animal shelter. I was surprised at her suggestion and when I told her this, she admitted to having heard some of my friends tease me about my dream. She told me volunteering would give me an idea of how a shelter is run. It was a good suggestion, so I called up a few animal shelters. After a few days, I got a volunteer position at an animal shelter close to my house. The animals were adorable, and I quickly learnt that like humans, each animal had its own unique personality. I got the chance to learn how to care for and cater for them based on their different personalities. During my time there, I found myself in several stressful situations involving the animals. Several times, I felt helpless because I did not know how to help an animal in distress. It was during these episodes that I doubted my ability to even work with animals, let alone run an animal sanctuary. Thankfully, with the help of more experienced staff and volunteers, I learnt how to stay calm and use different techniques to handle the animals. After several months at the animal shelter, I found another volunteer position at the local zoo. I was eager to learn how to care for a wider range of species of animals at the zoo. I was also excited because I knew I would have more responsibilities there. In the early days, I helped run educational events for the public. I also helped conduct tours and assisted the staff who conducted the animal shows. I took this opportunity to learn from the staff too. I observed how they interacted with the animals and dealt with the public. It was truly a hands-on learning experience. As the saying goes, patience is a virtue. I marvelled at the staff’s patience and professionalism because they had to constantly deal with people who ignored safety rules and tried to get too close to the animals. After two months, I got the chance to help with the animals. I worked alongside the vets and staff to clean and maintain the animal enclosures. Sometimes, I help feed the large animals and handle the smaller animals. Meanwhile, thoughts of running my own animal sanctuary were at the back of my mind. I was glad my teacher suggested I volunteer at an animal shelter because I was beginning to realise what I was up against. For one thing, it was a lot of hard work just working as a staff member in a zoo. Second, it needed competent staff to run it well. The animal shelter and zoo were able to operate successfully because they had a team of dedicated staff who were committed and willing to spend extra time caring for the animals. As time went by, I began to spend more time with the animals. I felt comfortable with them. Some of the staff and vets pointed out that I was a natural with the animals. I asked a lot of questions and paid attention to how they handled the animals and the issues that came up. One day, one of the vets said, “You’re like an animal whisperer. They trust you; that’s a great asset to have when you work with animals.” A few weeks after that, I was called into the office of the Executive Director (ED) of the zoo. I was puzzled! I did not know the ED even knew me. I wondered if I was going to be let go. Instead, I got an unexpected offer. He said he had heard a lot about me and what a good job I was doing. As I was still in school, he offered me a part-time position. I was ecstatic and immediately accepted the offer. I must have been caught up in the excitement of the moment because I blurted, “I hope to run my own sanctuary one day.” After a few moments of silence, the ED smiled and said he had a similar dream when he was young. “But it isn’t for everyone. I love animals and want to give them good quality care, but my days are filled with dealing with the business end of running a zoo. I have to constantly think of ways to raise money. I attend countless meetings with individuals and organisations so I can get enough money to keep this place running,” he said. The ED then continued, “Actually, I have little contact with the animals. And I truly miss it. I heard that you are very good with the animals. That’s a quality you should not waste by working in an office. Have you ever thought of pursuing a career in veterinary science?” After I left the ED’s office, I was very confused. He had given me a lot to think about. I always imagined myself working with animals but never really considered the amount of time I would have to spend fundraising or developing business plans. Over the next few weeks, my thoughts always went back to my conversation with the ED. As I continued to work with the animals, I knew what I was meant to do. I changed my dream and decided to study to become a vet. As a vet, I could work in a sanctuary or zoo anywhere in the world. More importantly, I would be taking care of animals. After that, I focused on my studies and continued to work at the zoo. During my years in university, I also worked in various veterinary clinics and hospitals to gain more experience. Now that I have finally graduated, I am about to start a new journey as a vet in an animal sanctuary. Part 3 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. 32 SULIT SULIT 1119/1 1119/1 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) Part 4 Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about reforestation of the Peruvian Amazon. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. Write your answers in the box provided. ROBOTIC SEED PLANTER TO RESERVE DEFORESTATION OF AMAZON The Amazon is the world’s largest rainforest. The second largest section of the jungle is located in Peru. The trees in the rainforest draw water from the soil and then, this water collects in the atmosphere before falling to Earth again as rain. The rainforest plays an important part in the water cycle. 27 Conservationists estimate that 17% of the rainforest has already been lost and more and more land will turn barren as global temperatures continue to rise. Data collected shows that in 2022, virgin forests the size of three football fields were being cleared every 22 minutes. In another set of data collected, it shows that in the first four months of 2023, the total destruction of the rainforest stands at 1,204 sq km. 28 It is obvious that the Amazon is in danger. 29 A non-profit organisation called Junglekeepers International has a mission to protect about 222 sq km of the rainforest and reverse deforestation. To do this, they are working with ABB, a Swiss-Swedish robotics company. 30 The project highlights the potential of using robotics and Cloud technology in reforestation. Miners and loggers use advanced technology to clear the forest, so using technology to replant the forest seems logical. The vice-president of Junglekeepers, who himself was a former illegal miner and logger, believes using technology makes this an even fight. He is positive that locals can learn the technology and take part in efforts to save the rainforest. The robot, called YuMi, is dual-armed and solar-powered. It is located in a jungle laboratory in the Madre del Dios region in Peru. 31 YuMi is automated to do repetitive tasks; dig a hole in the soil, drop the seed inside, compact the soil on top and mark it with a colour-coded tag. It can plant 640 seed bags in two and a half hours. In other words, it is able to replant an area as large as two football fields every day. 32 As the robot takes care of the repetitive tasks, volunteers and conservationists can spend more time doing other important conservation work. This includes working in the nurseries, patrolling the area to deter illegal loggers as well as educating the locals on the preservation of the rainforest. A But it is linked via solar satellite Wi-Fi and controlled 12,000 km away in Sweden. B The progress of the reforestation seems promising after the introduction of the robot. C Experts believe this cycle is being disrupted by deforestation, forest fires and the rising temperatures. D By accelerating the seed-planting process, YuMi makes reforestation faster and more efficient. E This is roughly the size of Los Angeles. F Together, they are running a pilot project using a seed-planting robot in the rainforest. G Conservationists now have more time to focus on educating the locals on importance of reforestation. H Conservationists working in the Peruvian Amazon have turned to technology to battle deforestation. [6 marks] Koleksi KM SPM BI (KM2) 5th.indd 32 25/8/2023 9:05:38 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Read the texts carefully and answer the questions that follow. Spending Habits of Teenagers A – MISHA, 17 years old Image plays an important part in the spending habits of many teenagers. They want to look fashionable, so they do not mind spending money on clothes and accessories. I think it is wasteful to spend a lot of money to follow fashion trends because they do not last. B – JAMIE, 16 years old Teenagers spend most of their money on clothes and food. The next popular spending categories are video games and gadgets. I think this trend will continue in the coming years. Clothes and food are necessities. Most teenagers consider themselves gamers, so they will spend on games, new consoles, or mobile phones. C – ROSHAN, 15 years old I get an allowance from my parents and gift money on special occasions. I have a limited source of income at the moment, so I am picky about what I spend on. So, I am going to spend on things that I really need, not want. D – NOOREYA, 16 years old I like to believe I am savvy about money. I do not go for brand-name products because they are expensive. Lesser-known brands or store brands are just as good. Why pay more for something when a cheaper version is just as good?
