I would suggest you celebrate the birthday at home. You can bake his favourite cake. He normally comes home around 8 p.m. right? You can invite all his friends secretly and surprise him at home. You could also cook him his favourites. I know that he loves your baking and cooking. It would not even cost you much. It is better than taking him out. I hope my suggestion will be considered. Please keep me updated on how things went. Take care and goodbye. Sue Part 2 Question 2 Suggested answer: Electronic sports are a global phenomenon right now and they are growing worldwide and in Malaysia. E-sports are a form of competitive video gaming that is played online or through gaming consoles. Among the benefits of e-sports is that they promote handeye coordination among students. There are also teamwork, communication, strategy, and sportsmanship skills learned through participating in organised e-sports. In addition, they do better in mathematics and reading and more often aspire to higher education. Students who join activities are more likely to pay attention in class. They care more about their education. They also feel better about themselves and engage in fewer harmful behaviours like smoking and drinking. By offering e-sports as an extracurricular activity, schools reach students who are often otherwise disengaged from the school community. E-sports in schools can transport these students from the world of digital gaming into the common space of the school computer lab or library commons. They are more likely to be engaged during classes and less likely to suffer and spread the harm of feeling out of sync with their school community. On the contrary, it also has harmful effects for students. They could acquire negative health impacts from extended gaming. They might also lack balance with other important activities like schoolwork, socialising, and exercise. It is hoped that Malaysian schools will have a common e-sports club. This would promote togetherness and social experience. Without a school e-sports club, passionate gamers often feel left out of mainstream school social life. Part 3 Question 3 Suggested answer: To: The Principal of SMK Dato Lela Panglima From: Anna Hooi Title: The health and safety problems faced by students and suggestions to overcome the problems. As President of the Health and Safety Club of the school, I have been asked to write a report to the principal regarding some of the health and safety problems faced by students and suggestions to overcome the problems. The issues are quite serious and need immediate action. The problems are firstly, rubbish is everywhere and the drains are clogged. It can spread diseases. We have tried cleaning the corridors every day after school but that did not help much. Secondly, the toilets are dirty and frequently without water. Water cuts are frequent in school right now and that makes it worst. We also organised weekly clean-up every Saturday but that does not solve the problem. Next, the parking areas are insufficient, uncovered and not cemented. Last week, a Form Four student was injured after falling off his motorbike as he was about to park. The suggestions are firstly, we must put more rubbish bins and we can assign each class to a bin. Secondly, we must ensure that the school cleaners clear the clogged drains. Next, we must store water. Since it is monsoon now, we can buy big storage cans to collect rain water. Besides, we must build more parking lots that are roofed and cemented. Finally, one more problem is the food in the canteen is not covered. One suggestion is to tell the caterer to always cover all the food. Reported by: Anna Hooi (Anna Hooi) Question 4 Suggested answer: My Favourite: Max Power There are quite a number of leisure facilities around my housing area but not many really put their finger on the pulse of students’ needs. I think that innovation, affordability and convenience are the main requirement of every student who wants to work out. With these criteria in mind, Max Power sports centre seems to be a decent contestant that deserves attention. It is situated in Lebuh Palma, Juru. Max Power is just a five-minute drive from my house. It is situated in an impressive purpose built two-storey building with ample parking space. The reception desk is disproportionately small compared to the spacious rooms with gym equipment. However, my first impression was rather positive due to the lively upbeat music that welcomed me as I entered. The ground floor is split in two parts: on the left there is a stunning variety of treadmills, stationary bicycles, elliptical trainers while on the right, you can have a complete lower and upper body workout with special equipment for each and every muscle group. On the first floor, there are exclusive compartments for aerial yoga, spinning, cross training and TRX. All the above mentioned luxury and expertise comes with a staggering 40% discount for students! The working hours stretch from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. which might not be convenient if you want to go early in the morning. If you want quick and impressive results, you can use its latest fatburning equipment along with off the beaten track workout techniques that promise to give you an adrenaline rush as if you were actually doing extreme sports. All in all, Max Power is conveniently situated, it boasts equipment and programmes that young people would definitely find challenging and most importantly, its fees are in tune with students’ tight budgets. I would wholeheartedly recommend it. Question 5 Suggested answer: Life Goes On! My eyes are filled with tears as I look at a photo. It is a family photo taken three years ago, showing my parents, my younger brother Mark and myself having fun while we were having a picnic at a beach. I used to have a warm and happy family but now I am left with only memories. I could still remember vividly what happened that day, the day I wished had never happened. It was about two weeks after our family picnicked at the beach. My parents owned a business which required them to travel once or twice per month. That morning when my brother and I were having our breakfast before going to school, we saw our parents walking down from the stairs, all dressed up. They were carrying their luggage and were ready to go on a business trip to Singapore. Normally, they drove but this time, for a change, they decided to go by air. Mark and I helped our parents to carry their luggage to a taxi waiting outside our house. We bade our parents’ goodbye before they went off in the taxi. We went to school. Around 12 p.m., my brother and I were requested to go and see the principal. He looked disturbed. He told us that the airplane that my parents travelled, crashed with no survivors. Extremely shocked and grief-stricken, we burst into tears. I was so miserable that I fainted. When I woke up, I found myself at home in my bedroom. I then went downstairs and saw my brother in the living room. Some of our relatives comforted us and asked us what we were going to do, since our parents had passed on. They invited us to stay with them so that they could take care of us. I thanked them for their benevolence and replied that my brother and I needed to think it over before making a decision. Having considered our future for a few days, we decided to live in an orphanage as we did not wish to trouble our relatives. Three years have passed since we moved into the orphanage. In the orphanage, we have friends just like us, orphans. Our relatives come to visit us once in a while. Our life goes on! Kertas 3 Part 1 Phase 1 Teacher to assess. Phase 2 Teacher to assess. Part 2 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Task 2A Candidate A My favourite local food is definitely chicken rice. I usually get it at a stall near my house run by a Chinese uncle. My family has been going there for years. We are his regular customers. I have tried other chicken rice before but I think his is the best. I love chicken rice because it is very tasty and not too spicy. I also think it is a well-balanced meal because it has carbohydrate which is the rice, chicken for protein, vegetables and soup. I think I prefer local food because it is healthier and more delicious. Task 2B Candidate B My favourite cousin is the daughter of my mother’s sister. She is a pretty girl with long hair and tanned skin. We have been close since we were children. She is a year older than me. She lives near my residential area so we meet each other quite often. We enjoy watching movies and playing online games. We also love to go hiking. I think it is important to have close family ties because I feel secure and loved. Strong family ties help families resolve conflicts and create life-long bond with each other. Koleksi KM SPM BI Answers 5th.indd 170 25/8/2023 9:53:02 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
171 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) – Answers Part 3 (Accept any suitable response.) Sample discussion: Reasons to learn different cultures Candidate A Many of the problems we have in this world are due to misunderstandings. When you learn about another culture, and see why others do the things they do, it’s easier to understand them. You can develop sympathy with others. It’s harder to justify things like hatred and war when you understand where another person is coming from. Learning about different people and their cultural celebrations in a positive environment can help students learn to celebrate diversity. This positive attitude of celebrating diversity leads to cultural sensitivity and a more global awareness of humanity. Candidate B We should try our best to learn about each and every culture in order to live in harmony. As such, we learn to appreciate and respect every individual from all walks of life. We can also comprehend the world better if we learn different cultures. It helps in understanding the richness of life. It also makes us globally aware of the value of different cultures. There are a number of reasons on why we need to learn different cultures. The most important reason to learn different cultures Candidate A I strongly believe that the most important reason to learn different cultures is to comprehend the world better. Lots of problems can arise from misunderstandings, especially because we live in a multicultural world. By learning and understanding different cultures, you understand why people do things the way they do. When you identify with other people, you sympathise with their situation. No arguments or fights. The world will be a better place then. Do you agree? Candidate B I agree to your point. Many of the problems we have in this world are due to misunderstandings. When you learn about another culture, and see why others do the things they do, it’s easier to understand them. Furthermore, we not only sympathise but we also have empathy towards others. This will definitely promote togetherness and harmony. In short, I do share the same point that the most important reason to learn different culture is to comprehend the world better. Candidate A As a conclusion, we agree that the most important reason to learn different cultures is to comprehend the world better. Candidate B Yes, we do. Thank you. Candidate A Thank you. Promoting cultural awareness in Malaysia Candidate A I am certain that we can promote cultural awareness in Malaysia by doing many things. First and foremost, we should not be afraid to ask questions. People feel respected and appreciated when others take a genuine interest in who they are, so ask open-ended questions about their culture to learn more. To love a culture is definitely by understanding the people. What do you think? Do you agree with my point? Candidate B Yes precisely, you have got a brilliant point there. We can also have more cultural functions in schools and community. This will definitely promote cultural awareness. We have celebrations every month and that involves various types of ethnicity in Malaysia. We should celebrate together. Having ‘Open House’ is a good idea too. We have been doing all these but it will be good if we can continue our effort more vigorously in order to promote cultural awareness in Malaysia so that we live peacefully as ‘One Malaysia’. Choose a peer who is doing amazing work, such as the founder of an organisation that tackles environmental waste or the creator of a website that educates the public about the environment. Students will be interested in listening to ideas from someone their own age. Furthermore, the speaker’s journey can inspire and mobilise students to take action to save the environment. I hope my suggestion is helpful. Your cousin, Nadia Part 2 Question 2 Suggested answer: Being helpful is an admirable quality to possess. It allows us to create, maintain and strengthen relationships. Here is an incident that illustrates how being helpful can make a difference in our lives. Recently, my neighbour asked me to keep an eye on her house while she was away. That evening, I saw something flickering through her kitchen window. When I realised it was fire, I called for help. Fire fighters managed to put out the fire before it spread. They said a kitchen appliance got overheated and caught fire. My neighbour returned the following day. She was in shock but thanked me for acting quickly. I was happy to help her. We should be helpful to others because it can boost our happiness, health, and well-being. Participating in activities that involve volunteering is a great way to instill the spirit of giving and encourage more people to help one another. Part 3 Question 3 Suggested framework: Introduction Teenagers spend a lot of time on their devices. Screen time offers teenagers access into a world of social media, games, and entertainment. Paragraph 1 Top three things teens can do away from their screens: • Find something in your room that you enjoyed doing/ playing when you were younger and try it again. • Visit a friend or invite a friend over to your house. • Try a new outdoor activity such as Frisbee or skateboarding with your friends. Paragraph 2 It is important for teenagers to take a break from their screens for several reasons. • They experience eyestrain, fatigue, and headaches. • They get immersed in the digital world and miss out on things that happen in the real world. • They suffer from stress and anxiety. Paragraph 3 Taking time away from their screen offers many benefits. • It can improve sleep because using gadgets close to bedtime can disrupt sleep. • It allows face-to-face human connections, therefore improving connections with family, friends, and classmates. • It improves productivity and learning; switching between texting/surfing the Internet and studying/listening to the teacher can disrupt learning. Conclusion • All in all, spending time on the screen can be relaxing as well as entertaining but too much screen time is not good for your physical and mental health. • It is important to find a balance, so you get to enjoy the benefits of the digital and real world. Question 4 Suggested framework: Introduction The Science Society visited the Science Discovery Centre on Friday, 15 March at 10 a.m. Twenty students and two teacher advisors went on the trip. The trip fulfilled all its learning objectives. What made the visit enjoyable? • Arrived and left on schedule. • The Student Councillor was friendly, knowledgeable, and able to answer all our questions. • The exhibits were interesting, interactive, and engaging. • The information panels had a lot of interesting facts. What did the students learn? • Hands-on learning experience about science concepts. • Better understanding of science concepts. Why should the society organise more field trips? • To create interest in science, technology, maths and engineering • To inspire curiosity and an attitude of discovery among teenagers • To offer opportunity to learn about science in a more hands-on way Conclusion Students were able to experience new concepts firsthand. It proved that outside activities could enhance learning. All in all, the trip was a success. Koleksi KM SPM BI Answers 5th.indd 172 25/8/2023 9:53:02 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Paragraph 2 • Second, I would get a part-time job when I was still in school. • I would get an idea about working with a team and exposure to an office environment. • I would have the chance to solve work-related problems. • I would appreciate the value of money because I would be earning my own money. Paragraph 3 • Third, I would study at a college away from home. • I would learn to be more self-reliant and independent. • I would experience living in a new town/city. • I would be able to expand my circle of friends. Conclusion The choices I have made thus far have been safe, easy, and predictable. With these do-overs, I would get the chance to experience new and different things. Suggested answers: Task 2A Candidate A It was held at my aunt’s house on the last Saturday of the month of May to celebrate my grandmother’s 80th birthday, so all my close and extended relatives attended the gathering. It was special because we got to celebrate my grandmother’s life. We had a slide show presentation showcasing the important moments in her life. We also enjoyed the good company and delicious food. They are exciting because we get to reconnect with relatives living far away and meet new members so we can build a close-knit family. Task 2B Candidate B A week-long financial literacy campaign was organised last month. A campaign like this helps students understand how to budget, save money and invest so they can manage their money wisely. This allows them to make good financial decisions and achieve financial stability in life. There were many interesting activities such as a budgeting workshop, a talk about investing, quizzes, and games. The campaign is beneficial to students because they get to think about their financial goals and make plans so they can reach their shortand long-term goals. Part 3 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested points: Things to consider when choosing friends 1 Honesty: You need a friend who is honest in their opinions and feedback. You don’t want someone who just agrees with you or who is too afraid to speak their mind. This kind of friend is not afraid to tell you the truth even though you might not like it. 2 Thirst for knowledge: You can learn and be exposed to new ideas and things from friends who are interested in learning new things and gain knowledge. 3 Similar interests: Your life can be exciting when you can go places, do activities, and try new experiences with other people. This is possible if you have friends who share similar interests. 4 Trustworthy: You want a friend who you trust to tell a secret and know they are going to keep it to themselves. 5 Can communicate well: You should have friends whom you can share your thoughts and feelings with. You should be comfortable to be yourself around them. 6 Offers emotional support and guidance: You want to be around people who are positive and uplifting; they are people who will encourage and motivate you. However, you should pack some snacks and a bottle of water. Finally, you have to register for the clean-up at the nature reserve’s website. You can get more information about the activity there too. See you next Saturday! Your friend, Rachael Part 2 Question 2 Suggested answer: Historical landmarks were built or founded long ago. For example, the Kuching Old Courthouse was completed in 1874 during the rule of Rajah Charles Brooke. Francis Light plotted a horse trail up a hill in 1788 which later became Penang Hill. It is important to preserve these landmarks. They are witnesses to past events that allow us to appreciate where we came from. Learning about our heritage and past struggles can also help instill and strengthen feelings of patriotism. There are many ways to encourage people to visit historical landmarks. They should be promoted on tourism websites as must-see places. Schools should organise field trips there so students can visit the places they read about in their textbooks. They should also be well maintained and have information panels to educate visitors. Historical landmarks have interesting structures, designs, and stories to tell us, so it is important we preserve and appreciate them. Question 3 Suggested framework: Introduction I visited Legoland Malaysia for the second time since it opened. Let me share my experience with you. Paragraph 1 Themed sections in the park: • A lot of interesting activities to do and things to see in each section. • They are suited for children and older fans of LEGO, so no one is left out. • Plenty beautifully crafted sculptures to see. • However, some sculptures look worn from being in the hot sun. Paragraph 2 The rides and other special attractions in the park: • The roller coasters are small and not adrenaline-pumping. • Car and boating school is fun among young children, so expect long queues. • The Observation Tower is a wonderful attraction – visitors rode up the tower on a rotating platform that offered a panoramic view of the park. Paragraph 3 Facilities and services • The park is clean and well-maintained. • There are several eateries in the park offering a variety of food but as in all theme parks, prices are high. • There are several retail outlets to get your souvenirs but ‘The Big Shop’ has the largest selection of LEGO toy sets in Asia. • The staff is cheerful, helpful, and professional. Conclusion • I highly recommend you visit it before you are too old to enjoy all the rides and attractions. • An exciting place to include in your next holiday itinerary. Question 4 Suggested framework: Introduction The Entrepreneur Club carried out a survey among Form 3, 4 and 5 students in Sekolah Menengah Aman Putri. 350 questionnaires were given out and all were collected by the club’s class representatives. 175 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) – Answers • To find out the reasons for their shopping preference. • To determine if age is a factor in choosing one shopping method over the other. • To find out what type of purchases students make either online or in store. What is the majority opinion on the matter? • The majority of students shop in physical stores. • The majority of students indicated no access to online banking. • Older students (17-year-olds) shopped online more than younger students (15 & 16-year-olds). • Students shopped online mostly to buy video games or subscriptions to watch movies./Students shopped in store for food, clothes, stationery and shoes. Recommendations • Students who use online shopping platforms should exercise caution when giving personal banking information. • They should make a budget and stick to it, so they do not overspend. • They should be wary of online scams. Conclusion The survey showed that the majority of school-going children shopped in physical stores. The lack of access to online banking facilities was the main reason for this. Question 5 Suggested framework: Introduction During my last holiday, I visited my cousins in their island hometown. They are good at planning exciting activities, so I was expecting a wonderful holiday. However, it turned out to be an unforgettable one too. Paragraph 1 • In the beginning, my cousins and I did the usual holiday activities. • Sightseeing, shopping, and going on a local food trail were part of the itinerary. • Then, someone suggested a cruise on a yacht. Paragraph 2 • We set off early one morning – we watched the sun rise and sailed along the coast. • Suddenly, the weather changed, and the yacht was pushed towards some rocks. It began to sink. • The captain and crew hurried us into lifeboats. • The waves were big, so our lifeboat floated away. Paragraph 3 • Then, we saw land in the distance, so we rowed towards it. • We were marooned. • We were scared – thoughts of no one finding us caused panic. • Then, we walked along the shore. Conclusion After walking for about 30 minutes, we heard someone call out to us. It was the captain and his crew. They were climbing out of their lifeboats. They were smiling and pointing towards a beautiful resort hotel in the distance. My cousins and I let out a big sigh of relief. Kertas 3 Part 1 Phase 1 Teacher to assess. Phase 2 Teacher to assess. Part 2 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Task 2A Candidate A I recently went on a school trip to the museum. The activities we did there included exploring the galleries with a guide, participating in a scavenger hunt, and watching an art show presentation. I liked participating in the scavenger hunt because it was a challenging activity. I had to solve riddles to correctly identify the paintings and sculptures exhibited in the museum. I’d suggest that for future school trips, the teachersin-charge have a session where they divide students into small groups. Then, they allow each group to conduct selftours. After that, each group shares what they learnt on their tours. Students can learn a lot from each other. Task 2B Candidate B The person I consider my role model is my cousin, Anna. She is a doctor. She has an oval face and big eyes. She has long, straight hair and she is also slim and tall. She has many admirable qualities. She is hardworking, dedicated, and passionate about her job. She is kind and patient. Even though she is shy, she makes an effort to talk to people and make them feel comfortable. I think students should have positive role models. Students will pick up good habits from the people they look up to. Role models can motivate and provide guidance and support to students as well as inspire them to achieve their dreams. Part 3 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested points: Steps residents can take to keep their neighbourhood safe 1 Get to know the local police department: Invite your local police inspector to give a safety talk to the residents. The police can also guide you to set up a neighbourhood watch group. Ask the police to patrol your neighbourhood regularly too. 2 Stay alert and observant: Keep an eye on your neighbours’ houses when they are away. If you observe non-residents loitering in front of your neighbour’s house or notice someone behaving suspiciously, call your local police department.
