LISTENING INTRODUCTION The aim of the listening test is to assess the test takers’ ability to understand spoken discourse comprising monologue, dialogue and conversation from various genres that include talk, interview, radio talk show, lecture, briefing, announcement, news report and speech. The topics of the spoken discourse cover a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar topics that may present simple expressions of language to linguistically complex and abstract speech. LISTENING SKILLS Daily listening comprehension may require listeners to be equipped with skills that can be progressed through various stages to increase their competency in aural listening comprehension abilities. According to Taylor, the stages include: 1 listen to and understand phrases with comprehension in directions, locations and instructions 2 listen to and understand clear standard speech on familiar matters with the ability to deduce meaning of unfamiliar items in a new but related context 3 listen to and understand extended speech including less structured discourse with the ability to reorganize information and to select information relevant to a particular task (Taylor H.M. 1981, Learning to listen to English, TESOL Quarterly (15) 1) LISTENING TECHNIQUES Familiarize yourself with the following listening techniques to prepare for the MUET Listening Test: • Listening for main ideas • Listening for specific information • Understanding language functions • Recognizing speaker’s role, relationship and attitude • Distinguishing facts and opinions • Making predictions • Making inferences • Drawing conclusions Listening for Main Ideas The main idea refers to the topic or the gist of the text. A text may have more than one main idea, and so candidates need to listen to the whole text before deciding what the main ideas are. It may not necessarily be mentioned earlier in the text. Take Note! There are three modes of effective listening: • Attentive listening – listeners focus on the speaker, and try to eliminate distractions • Responsive listening – listeners give encouraging response to the speaker, using verbal and nonverbal cues • Active listening – combines the skill of listening and responding The MUET Listening Test focuses mainly on attentive listening. MUET P1(Lestening) 2nd.indd 2 18-May-23 4:44:23 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
LISTENING Listen to the whole text. Listen for repetition of words and phrases. Focus on the gist and omit unnecessary details. Listen for discourse markers, such as: • The topic of the… • The purpose of the… How to listen for the main idea(s) Listening for Specific Information Specific information refers to the exact detail or description of something mentioned in the text. When listening for specific information, we need to have an idea of what we are listening to (i.e. the main idea). In the test, candidates may be asked specific information related to the main idea such as: • people and places • date, time or duration • quantity • object Pay attention to names of people and places, date, time and quantity. Skim through the questions to know what information is needed. Pay attention to keywords and phrases. Listen for signal words or phrases such as: for example, for instance, because, due to this, the reason is, etc. How to listen for specific information MUET P1(Lestening) 2nd.indd 3 18-May-23 4:44:23 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. 4 LISTENING Understanding Language Functions Language function explains why the speaker says that particular sentence. In other words, it expresses the intention of the speaker in a discourse. So it is important to be familiar with the various language functions. Here are some of the common ones: Language functions Examples Language of describing The officer is friendly and … The course is challenging … The rooms are spacious. Language of informing The resort is located … The punishment for …. The protection provided … Language of sequencing In the first stage, … Initially, … This is followed by, … Language of classifying Let me talk about 3 features. The most important factor is ... One characteristic is ... Language of comparing and contrasting Likewise, … Similarly, … However, … X is different from Y in … Language of inference and prediction Based on the data, … I foresee a bright future for … It is estimated a third of the population … Language of persuasion I appeal to all parents to … You have to consider … Many customers claim that … but there is a group who support … Language of justification For this reason, … I believe this will happen … Allow me to defend my case … Generally relevant for Part 1 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 1, 2 and 4 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2, 3 and 4 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 4 and 5 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2 and 4 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2, 4 and 5 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2, 3, 4 and 5 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2 and 4 Helpful Hint MUET P1(Lestening) 2nd.indd 4 18-May-23 4:44:23 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. 5 LISTENING Language functions Examples Language of appeal Please show mercy on … I’d like to appeal to all the youths … I beg the authorities for permission to … Language of advice All of you had better take a rest … I advise all youngsters listening to this talk show to ... The best advice I can give you is … Language of analysis After careful examination of … An in-depth study reveals that … From the evidence provided, … Language of summarizing On the whole, … Basically, what I am saying is … In today’s interview, our guest speaker … Recognizing Speaker’s Role, Relationship and Attitude When listening to a text, candidates need to keep in mind who the speaker is and to whom he or she is speaking to. This would give some context to the listening text. For example, when listening to a dialogue, the conversation could be between family members, friends, teacher and student, interviewer and guest, and so forth. Furthermore, the tone of the text reflects the speaker’s attitude towards the subject-matter. A speaker’s attitude can be described as the following: Speaker’s attitude amused sad negative excited optimistic objective biased positive angry Generally relevant for Parts 2, 3 and 4 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2 and 4 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2 and 4 Helpful Hint Generally relevant for Parts 2, 3 and 4 Helpful Hint Never jump to conclusions prematurely. Listen until the end to know how the speaker treats the subject-matter before making an assumption on his attitude. Helpful Hint MUET P1(Lestening) 2nd.indd 5 18-May-23 4:44:24 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
LISTENING Distinguishing between Facts and Opinions A text can be based on facts or merely based on the opinion of the speaker. Therefore, when listening to the text, candidates must be able to distinguish whether they are listening to a fact-based or opinion-based text. The ability to separate fact from opinion is also crucial in developing critical thinking skills. • statement that can be proven true or false • based on observation or research • objective • attitude or judgement that cannot be proved right or wrong • based on personal view or belief • biased FACT OPINION VS Remember not to be too influenced by your background knowledge when making inferences. Listen attentively to the text before making accurate inferences. Helpful Hint Making Predictions Making predictions means to guess key information contained in the listening text prior to listening. In the Listening Test, candidates are given some time to read through the instructions and questions. By looking at the questions, candidates can make predictions on what the text is about and listen out for clues when the listening text is played. Making Inferences To make an inference means to form an opinion based on the information we already have. Candidates must put together the information that the speaker provides, and what they already know about the topic to figure out the missing information. Therefore: My Background Knowledge Clues in the Text + = My Inference Drawing Conclusions Drawing conclusions means using information that is implied or inferred in the text to make meaning out of what is not clearly stated. Conclusions rely on the facts of the situation and essentially means the next logical step based on all the information given. Drawing conclusions is deeper than making an inference because it requires reasoning skill. To reach a logical conclusion, you may follow these steps: Review all the information stated on the text. Consider any facts or details that are implied but not clearly stated. Analyze what the next logical step would be based on the information. MUET P1(Lestening) 2nd.indd 6 18-May-23 4:44:24 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
LISTENING HOW TO LISTEN EFFECTIVELY FOR THE CEFR-MUET LISTENING TEST • Candidates will be given some time to read through the questions before listening to the text. • Use the time given to read the instructions, the questions and the options given carefully. • You may underline the keywords to help you focus on the important points. • Make predictions on what the text will be about and what to pay attention to while listening. Before listening • The text will be played twice. When listening for the first time: • Listen to the text very carefully. • Pay attention to the intonation pattern, stress and pauses made by the speakers. This may signal the main ideas and important details. • Bear in mind that the information you are looking for may not appear in the same order as the questions. • Focus on listening to the text and try to block out external disturbances. • Choose the correct answer while you are listening. When listening for the second time: • Listen to confirm your answers. • Pay attention to the details you may have missed the first time. • Make sure you have answered ALL questions. While listening LISTENING FRAMEWORK FOR THE CEFR – MUET LISTENING TEST Speech acts are communicative acts that convey an intended language function. This framework presents the different levels of speech acts that candidates must be familiar with. During the Listening Test: • Listen very carefully, even when you think you have heard the right answer. Sometimes, it can just be a distractor, and the correct answer will come along. • Keep in mind that distractions are very common – don’t allow yourself to lose focus, or get bored. • Always check your answers during the second round of listening. Peter, I am happy to know that you have been offered to do the automobile training programme. Give opinion Do not be confused. Sit and write down the advantages and disadvantages of studying in polytechnic and in Form Six. The automobile course is a 3-year vocational training programme. Polytechnic courses provide only basic and practical knowledge in the engineering field and you will graduate as a diploma holder. You can either start working or continue your postgraduate studies in the same field in public or private universities for next three or four years. On the other hand, Form Six is a one-and-half year pre-university course after which you may apply to further your studies in any local or foreign universities to complete a 4-year degree programme of your choice. Since you have been doing very well in your studies, I suggest you complete your Form Six but the choice is yours. I remember you telling me your dream is to study software engineering in the university. State 3 benefits Okay, I will share with you three advantages of studying in local universities. Firstly, the tuition fees and living costs are more affordable compared to universities abroad. Secondly, the advantage of proximity to your hometown can always keep the homesickness away from you. Lastly, it is your home turf and you speak the language. It is a huge advantage and often a bigger obstacle if you do not speak the foreign language when studying overseas. You are able to invest extra hours in your studies and enjoy quality time with family and friends instead of putting extra hours learning to communicate in a foreign language. 309 ANSWER KEY Exercise 4 (Suggested answers) New Message From: Hillary Subject: Convince Parents Hi Pamela, I am glad that you want to get a motorcycle license so that you can ride to school. Yes, it is exhausting especially on hot days. It is a waste of time when you have to wait for the bus or when there is a breakdown. It is true accidents involving motorcyclists is top of the list. Motorcycle accidents can be very serious, resulting in head injuries, brain injuries and even death. Statistics show that 1/3 of motorcycle accidents are caused by other drivers, and can include running a motorcycle off the road or turning in front of them. Pamela, in my opinion, riding motorcycle is safe if all the road users practise precaution. You can convince your parents by showing them that you can handle responsibility. Start helping more around the house. Get a part time job and save up some money to get the licence. If your parents can see that you are more mature than the average teenager they will treat you more like an adult and be convinced that you are able to ride to school. It is also important to make sure your parents know you are aware of the risks and tell them you are planning to wear the best protective gear you can afford, obey the traffic rules and take safety precautions when you are riding your motorcycle. Sure, I am not going anywhere for the holiday. I can accompany you to apply for your licence. Just give me a call one day earlier so that I can inform my parents. Hear from you soon! It is an unfortunate thing too that your motorcycle broke down. I know it is all too much for you to bear but you have to overcome it. Life is full of surprises, both pleasant and not-sopleasant ones. Therefore, we need to save money for rainy days. We have to manage our finances wisely. When you make it a habit to set aside some money from your salary for emergencies, you can weather all storms. I am sad to hear your parents are facing financial difficulties too. I have to apologize that I am unable to lend you RM300, as I have to pay for my tuition fees. However, I can loan you RM150 now and you can return it when you have the cash available. Most of our friends came for the party. I was sad, you, my best friend, missed my graduation party. It would have been more cheerful and lively if you were with us. How was your uncle’s wedding? I think you must have dressed to kill for the wedding party. I am sure you will go around visiting places in your one-month stay in Melbourne. Yes, it is true that my parents and my siblings took the initiative to prepare various attention-grabbing activities for all to partake. My much-loved activity for the day was a dance performed by my twin sisters. I was flabbergasted seeing them dancing so gracefully and perfectly in tune with the beat. Their movements captured the essence of the music. The funniest part was they roped in my dad to tango with them towards the end of their performance. We had a good laugh when my dad tried his very best to emulate them. Our classmates volunteered to prepare two exciting games for the party. The first game was ‘Battle of the Balloons’. They divided the players into two equal teams and each team was provided with different coloured inflated balloons. The balloons were tied to the players’ ankles. The goal is to step on and pop all of the opposing team’s balloons while avoiding popping their own. It was so funny and we laughed our hearts out seeing the players jumping to avoid their balloons being popped. The second game was ‘Story Starter’. This game starts with the beginning of a story and asks the first player to continue the story. The story continues on, moving from one person to another. The result was hilarious and you never know which turn the stories are going to take. All those who participated in both the games had a good time. Certain moments in life deserve to be celebrated and captured – and graduating from college is undoubtedly one of them. What better way to remember this important milestone than with pictures? My dad had already arranged with a studio nearby for a photoshoot. The shoot includes a solo graduation portrait and a family portrait. It would definitely put a smile on my parents’ faces and they would be proud of their accomplishment in educating me. Perhaps we can go for another photoshoot with our classmates once you are back home. Write soon! We really missed you at the engagement. It would have been more fun if you were present too. My engagement went well. We had around 200 guests. On the day of the engagement, Hafizal’s family brought the items we agreed upon. On the same day, the date for the wedding ceremony and various other conditions and requirements were discussed and confirmed by both our parents. Once all such matters have been resolved, Hafizal’s representatives handed over all the gift-trays with the exception of the engagement ring. His mother then placed the ring on my finger. To know if I looked gorgeous or not you would have to see my engagement album! Yes, your sister did pass me the cake and thank you for it. 315 ANSWER KEY Dear Anita, Glad to hear from you. I have to tell you the plogging activity at Taman Rimba last weekend was great. I enjoyed volunteering for the activity. I hope your cough has stopped by now and you are on the way to recovery. Yes, it was the first time our college Environment Club organized such an activity outside the college. I think it was more of a fun activity than a volunteering activity. We really had a good time. I did not think that I would enjoy jogging and picking up trash at the same time but I did. We made it sort of a competition to see who could pick up the most trash and the most interesting trash along the Bukit Rimba trail. It was truly exciting. You would not believe the types of trash we picked up. We collected 30 huge bags of trash and we sorted them into two piles – recyclables and nonrecyclables. There were a lot of aluminum cans, some glass bottles and plastic bottles. Jessie and Lim used their father’s pick-up truck to send the trash to a recycle centre in Puchong. The recyclables were sold for cash and the money will be used for our club’s future activities. Yanti was the one who slipped and fell into the water. She climbed up a huge rock to pick up some rubbish left there by picnickers and she slipped. Luckily, she did not injure herself, just suffered some scratches. Sure, we can go plogging together near our housing area. Besides exercising, we can keep our environment clean. See you soon! Bye Zinnia Practice 2 New Message From: Razilah Subject: Year-end class party Hi, Kamariah, The year-end class party was fun and exciting. It was well-organized and beyond my expectations. We let our hair down and had a fun time at the party. We felt sad that you were unable to attend the party. It was unfortunate that our year-end party was on the same day your brother got married. Yes, some of our classmates performed on the day. Sarah and Hannah performed a magic show. I never knew they had hidden talent in making things disappear. Jessica and a few others danced gracefully to a Malay song. I liked the performance by our class president, Ranie. It was a surprise to us that she could play the guitar like a professional. She even sang my favourite song Angels by Robbie William. The games prepared by our class teacher were interesting, exciting and entertaining. We had a good laugh when we played charade whisper and musical chairs. When playing musical chairs, instead of moving forward, the teacher told us to move backwards and it was a little difficult when the music went fast. The music was right up my street. Our Big Baby Jasmine won the game. She managed to push everyone down to get her seat whenever the teacher stopped the music. Yes, we are planning to visit our principal, who is recovering from dengue fever. We have decided to see her on the 24th, Saturday at 4 pm. You can join us too. Since we are carpooling, I will pick you up from your home at 3 pm. See you soon! Razilah Practice 3 New Message From: Rahman Subject: Recycled Art Workshop Hi Jason, Miss Susan did make an announcement to the class regarding the Recycled Art Workshop. I am glad that you are interested in attending the workshop. I am also excited about it and looking forward to learn more on how to convert recyclable materials to something useful. The Malaysian Nature Society runs this workshop every year without fail. The workshop will take place at Menara Bintang, Petaling Jaya on 24th July. It is a free 4-hour workshop, which will start at 9.00 am. We can commute there with our friends. The objective of this workshop is to help young people learn how to reuse plastic bottles and cans creatively instead of disposing them. It is vitally important for today’s younger generation like us to learn about recycling and sustainability. No, attendees do not have to bring anything with them for the workshop because the organizer would provide the plastic bottles and cans to be recycled. However, we need to have our stationery and a book to take down important notes related to recycling. MUET (Answer) 3rd.indd 315 18-May-23 4:42:47 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
ANSWER KEY Yes, since I am the President of Nature Society in our school, I am planning to join both sessions so that I could carry out the same project at school level with other members in my society See you on Saturday! Bye Rahman Practice 4 New Message From: Roziah Subject: Suggestion to buy a new mobile phone Hi Kim, I am glad you reached home safely. No, I have not finished editing our assignment because I had to accompany mum to see my grandma who is hospitalized. I will try to complete it by Sunday. I am so sorry you have lost your mobile phone. I know it is difficult to find it on a commuter train especially during rush hours. Well, to tell you the truth, I lost my Obbo phone two months ago when my family and I were on a holiday in Langkawi. I could understand very well the frustration and hopelessness that you have gone through when you realized your phone was missing. In fact, I cried the whole day and my dad felt so sorry that he promised to get me a new one. Picking the best mobile for yourself could be tricky and confusing. You can check out the comprehensive mobile buying guide on how to choose the right mobile phone for yourself. If you want a better processing power and a range of affordable options, then I suggest you opt for an Android phone like Samsing. It has long-lasting battery life that can last throughout the day so that you can remain productive. Besides that, it has higher resolution screen compared to Juawei and Obbo. Since Samsing is having a special promotion this month, you can get a discounted price too. In fact, I am a happy owner of Samsing Galaxy A20 now. I am free this weekend, so I have no problem accompanying you to the mall to buy the mobile phone. Moreover, I was thinking of buying myself an adjustable portable desktop phone holder tablet for our online class. Just inform me where to meet and I will be there. See you soon! Bye, Roziah Practice 5 New Message From: Prema Subject: Apology accepted Hi Sumathi, It is okay and I accept your apology for not being able to join in for the celebration. I am truly sorry to hear that you are under the weather. I pray that you have a complete and quick recovery. The birthday party was fantastic. My parents celebrated my birthday party with great joy and excitement. They invited my classmates and relatives for my special day. Well, dad bought me my favourite salted caramel yogurt cake. It was super-duper delicious and everyone enjoyed it. Mum catered some Indian traditional cuisine for the guests. My brother Ramesh, who is an amateur photographer, was kind enough to be the photographer of the day. I received many wonderful gifts too. Yes, your mum did pass me your gift and thank you for it. To tell you the truth, I never expected you would buy me the latest novel written by my muchloved writer, Daniel Steel. It will keep me occupied during the holidays. My most favourite gift was a HD DSLR camera. The reason why it is my favourite is that my dad, who is a photographer himself, gifted it. He knew very well that I am a photography lover. The second reason is I could use the camera to take memorable pictures with my family, friends and nature. Moreover, I would be able to capture unforgettable moments when I continue my twinning programme in England next year. That is an awesome idea. We can go out for lunch during the semester holidays provided you are fully recovered. Since both of us love western food, maybe we can go to Black Canyon at Jaya Jusco or you can recommend other western restaurants, which we have not patronized. Cannot wait to meet you! 317 ANSWER KEY that you are down with dengue fever. Hoping that you will recover soon and be back on your feet. The Talent Show has revealed quite a number of the youngsters’ secret talents. They were all great and all of us had a fun and exciting day. There were at least 25 people participating in the show. The opening act was a hip hop dance performed by a group of boys from Dato’ Karim Form Six College. The funniest act, in my opinion was Sri Megah College girls, dressed up like cats dancing Single Ladies by Beyonce. The most shocking performance of the day was a song sang by our Liza who showed an amazing voice, which almost made everybody cry. Yes, Kim and Julia were there too at the Talent Show. They were there to give moral support and to cheer for our schoolmates, especially, Liza. They were there too to record Liza’s performance, making it a great memory for her. Our Cultural Club teacher, Miss Aznida, has decided to organize a talent show. This is one way to encourage our friends to come to college after the exam. All the details related to the talent show can be found in the College Facebook page and will also be posted in the class WhatsApp group by respective class presidents, tomorrow. Hope that you are able to show your dancing talent in the show. Write soon. Bye Zaharah Practice 7 New Message From: Thila1234 Subject: Computer desk giveaway Hi David Ethan, I am glad you saw my post on Instagram. I bought a new study table and I would like to give away my computer desk to anyone who needs it. Usually, house owners prefer to rent out unfurnished rooms to students to enable them to afford the rent. I am so sorry to know about your predicament. I am sad to know you have to study and do your work on your mattress. Yes, you may have the computer desk. I am more than happy to give it away to someone who would make good use of it and I hope it will help you do your work more comfortably. Well, I have a cupboard and a foldable chair. The cupboard looks a little old and the chair is faded. If you do not mind, you can have those too. You can paint them to give a new look when you have time. Please pick up the desk on 24th March, before 2 pm. My address is 4, Jalan Utama, Bandar Jaya, Selangor. When you reach Bandar Jaya, look for Jalan Silau and turn right into Jalan Utama. My house is the only corner lot in Jalan Utama. Please ring the doorbell when you arrive, so that I can open the gate for you. Do call me at 016-2650xxxx if you have any problems finding my house. See you. Thila Practice 8 New Message Fom: Mazlina Subject: Buying birthday gift Hi, Everyone at home is fine. Hope you are too. Yes, Mum told me that she has invited your family to my brother’s 21st birthday party next weekend. I am happy to know that your family will be attending the birthday party. We have not had any family gatherings for a very long time. I am excited and eager to meet you. My brother loves to jog every evening. Maybe you can get something related to exercise. He also loves to drink fruit juices. Currently, he uses my elder sister’s juicer. Probably you can get a juicer for him. It is not that expensive too. Since he loves to exercise, I am planning to get him a fitness tracker band. It will show him how many calories he has burned, how many steps he has taken and how long he has been active. I hope he will like it. Yes, baking him a pizza is a good idea. I know he would love to have your thin crust seafood pizza for his birthday. He said that your pizza tasted better than the ones sold at fast food restaurant. Eagerly waiting for you. Bye, Mazlina MUET (Answer) 3rd.indd 317 18-May-23 4:42:47 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
