318 ANSWER KEY Practice 9 16, Lorong Turi , Bandar Bukit Tinggi, 41200 Klang, Selangor. 30 June 20__ Dear Aunty Roza, I am fine. Hope you and uncle Arman are in good health. Yes, I took part in my first national Scrabble competition. It was a fabulous experience, especially playing with seasoned players. Some of them were fantastic players. Yes, it was exciting and interesting to play against other players, as it is a highly competitive board game. The competition playing room was a scene to behold. Most of the nearly 100 players hailed from different colleges but some travelled from states as far away as Sabah and Sarawak. All games are timed, 25 minutes per side. Players hit the clock after each move, signalling the end of their turn. There was a 10-point penalty for each minute you go over time. I managed to finish in 8th place in my division with a 19-12 record. I won RM250 in prize money and a new dictionary. There are many benefits in playing Scrabble but I will share two most important ones. Firstly, Scrabble awakens inactive parts of the brain. Studies show that players engaged in a game of Scrabble developed an ability to strengthen their minds and improve in the game over time. Besides that, Scrabble also offers entertaining time to the entire family. Spending a happy time, full of laughter and fun, and of course free of stress, will help the young and old to build stronger immune systems. What can I say, both Uncle Arman and my cousin Liam are great Scrabble players. Do not worry, once you know the tips and tricks to win you are able to beat them. The tips to improve your scores are to use two- and three-letter words effectively. The simplest words are the foundation of a good Scrabble score. Next, remember to use prefixes and suffixes. Adding -ing, -ed, or -er can help you form new words in a pinch and squeeze some more points out of them. Do not forget about bingos. A bingo in Scrabble means that all seven letters on the rack are used in one turn. This earns a whopping 50-point bonus that can make the difference between winning and losing a game. I will teach you more tricks when I visit you during the semester break. Meanwhile, practise playing with everyone in the family whenever you have time. See you soon. Bye. Your niece, Imelda Practice 10 No 6, Jalan Silau, Taman Beruang, 34600 Taiping, Perak. 2 May 20__ Dear Ashton, It is true that I went on a camping trip. I had an awesome experience! It was tough but at the same time enjoyable. I, along with eight university mates, went camping in Janda Baik, Pahang. It was a four-day trip. We went there by bus and after a day’s stay in Bentong, we left in two taxis to Janda Baik. We camped out in the woods. It was wonderful to see the night sky as there was not an iota of pollution in the hill area. Yes, we had a lot of fun. We went jungle trekking. It was a thrilling and adventurous experience. We also went swimming and fishing by the river. We took photos of nature and the animals there. We built a campfire and cooked our own food too. Glad to hear that you will go camping during the school holidays. One drawback of camping is rain. Besides being dangerous, it will make you uncomfortable really fast. Having wet clothes in the night is not pleasant at all, even if it is not cold. It can mess up your food and if it is intense, it could take your tent away if you did not set it up correctly. I would advise you to bring along your rain jacket. Hope you’ll have a great time camping. Write to me about your experience. Bye. Raising children with good ethics and values is tough. Children’s social and emotional development and behaviour are affected by their surroundings. • It is a widely held belief that parents are accountable for the misbehaviour of children today because children are the mirror image of their parents, while another camp claims that parents are not responsible for children’s every action because they are exposed to many external factors that can influence their behaviour. Linker Firstly, To start, Body Paragraph For – Paragraphs 2 and 3 Topic Sentence 1 Children are the mirror image of their parents. • Family is the first environment that children immerse themselves in since they were born. Parents are the closest people to children and the role models and motivators for them. Children usually imitate their parents’ action since young. Parents who portray bad examples would influence children to follow their steps. Children learn life lessons, whether negative or positive, from their parents. If children do anything wrong then parents are accountable for their behaviour. For instance, when children do well in their exam, parents take the applause. Likewise, if children misbehave, then parents are responsible for their behaviour because children picked up the parents unruly misbehaviour towards others. Thus, children misbehave because parents themselves fail to be the right example for them. Linker Besides that, Furthermore Topic Sentence 2 Parents fail to discipline their children. • They are not bothered with their children’s future. 321 ANSWER KEY Body Paragraph Against – Paragraph 4 Topic Sentence 3 Children are exposed to many external factors that directly or indirectly influence their behaviour. • When a child behaves badly, it does not necessarily mean the parents failed at their responsibility. There are cases of children born into good families. They are brought up right but they still grow up to be bad because there are too many external factors such as peer influence, mass media or movies that can influence their behaviour. For example, a boy born into a god-fearing home. His parents brought him up right. From kindergarten to secondary school, he was a good child whom his parents used to praise. As a hardworking and smart child, he got admission to university; however, he joins a group of friends who are mischievous, ignores his studies and starts to misbehave. People who used to praise the parents now blame them for his bad behaviour. Are they really to be blamed? Although it is the responsibility of parents to train their children in the way they should go they are not responsible for their children’s every action. Conclusion Paragraph 5 Restate the topic Give opinion Conclude • Are parents responsible for children’s misbehaviour? – the debate – remains between both camps – assigning this responsibility – discussion – evident – parents and children – responsible – equal significance – neither can be refuted outright • Parents and children have different responsibilities at different stages in life • Children – become morally – socially responsible – behaviour – parents – responsibility seriously – mould – young minds Practice 7 Introduction Paragraph 1 Hook Different views Thesis Statement • Music is a universal aspect of human existence; it has no language but it plays a significant part in people’s lives • Many people believe music brings people together but some claim otherwise. • Some people believe that music connects us from different cultures globally and it unites and strengthens social bonds of a nation while some critics claim that music is a bone of contention between generations. Topic Sentence 2 Music unites a community and strengthens social bonds of a nation. • Patriotic music address – needs of societies divided – affected by conflict • Music – form of patriotic song – mobilized – foster national identity – appreciated across the country • Example – National Day songs Inilah Barisan Kita or Jalur Gemilang acts as a glue – augments social relationship – Malaysia • It evokes joyful reactions – people – convey message of solidarity • Patriotic music – a natural platform for social cohesion – crosses boundaries of ethnicity and religion Body Paragraph Against – Paragraph 4 Topic Sentence 3 Music is a bone of contention between generations due to its genre. • Bringing people of different ages together through music is tough. 322 ANSWER KEY • Generation gaps cause people to favour different genres of music. • Example – teenagers prefer vibrant and loud music such as heavy metal, pop or rock while elderly like classical or soothing music • The older generation choose music with insightful and thoughtful lyrics while the young would go for plethora of songs with lyrics that glorify sex, drugs, violence or ideologies • The lyrics of the music has the potential to change the mood and behaviour of the listener. For example, youngsters may show their anger or dissatisfaction on particular issues in a society through the lyrics of a song and create chaos in a society. • The interest in different genres and the deviated song lyrics and behaviour of young people sometimes may cause clashes between the generations and thus keep them distant from each other. Conclusion Paragraph 5 Restate the topic Give opinion Conclude • Music is something to be appreciated by everyone in a society. • Although music may actually do more to divide the young and old it surely uses its universality to bring together people of different cultures globally. • It is especially important at a time when the world appears to be more divided than ever that we find common ground to build cross-cultural relationships upon. It is often said those teenage years between the ages of 13 to 19 are the happiest times in one’s life. • There is a school of thought that people have a great chance to have the feeling of happiness in teen years; on the other hand, there are some who feel otherwise. • The former group believes that teen years are the most joyful years because parents take care of the intricacies and they have the freedom and opportunities to experience new things in life whereas the latter camp feels teenage years are the toughest years in life because they are under immense stress and experience many changes in life. MUET (Answer) 3rd.indd 323 18-May-23 4:42:48 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

324 ANSWER KEY Body Paragraph For – Paragraphs 2 and 3 Topic Sentence 1 Topic Sentence 2 Parents take care of teenagers’ intricacies. • They do not have to worry about family-related responsibility. They do not have to fret about how to make ends meet. They do not have to be under pressure of financial problem as all their needs are taken care of by their parents. Their duties consist of going to school, doing their homework and focusing on studies. They could spend quality time with their peers and have fun making new friends without worrying about obligations towards paying bills. As a result, they are able to get pleasure from life. Teenagers have the freedom and opportunities to experience new things. • They are allowed to ask stupid questions, make mistakes and speak freely on whatever is on their mind. They have the freedom to participate and enjoy things they are passionate about freely. They too have the freedom to manage their social lives and entertain themselves using evolving technology. • Besides that, during their innocent age the teens would experience feelings, like having a crush or falling in love with someone. Every teen remembers their first love and it will set the stage for all the relationships that would follow in their life. Thus, the freedom that they get and the new experiences they venture into gives them a kind of joy and excitement during that age. Body Paragraph Against – Paragraphs 4 and 5 Topic Sentence 3 Topic Sentence 4 Teenagers are under immense amount of stress. • Stress is part of life for teenagers. Many teenagers struggle with their homework and school especially exams and extracurricular commitments. The expectation to do well at school from parents and teachers makes their lives tough. Life continues to be a challenge to teenagers when they think about leaving school or getting into tertiary education or even employment. Adding on to that are their social relationships with friends and boyfriends or girlfriends where sometimes they face tribulations during that period because they feel unprepared or overwhelmed. Teenagers experience many changes in life during their teen years. • The transformations in physical, behavioural and psychological aspects in teens are sometimes not tolerated by the society as people around might reprimand them for such unnecessary things. For example, parents or society expect teenagers to dress up appropriately or decently but teenagers might want to follow the latest trend to explore their identity. It becomes difficult for them to match their expectation and the expectation of their parents. This makes it hard for teenagers to lead their lives happily. Besides that, society expects teenagers to act more mature but at the same time, they are treated like small children. Hence, teenagers feel that they do not enjoy teen life because they lack privacy and independence. Conclusion Paragraph 6 Restate the topic Give opinion Conclude • After weighing both sides, it is not wrong to agree with the late Irwing Berlin’s words, an American songwriter, “Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it”. Indeed our perceptions on the happiest time in our life would largely depend on how we regard life. It is undeniable for one to regard teenage years as the happiest years of life; however, in the increasingly realistic world where meritocracy plays a large role, teenagers are having a difficult and stressful time to enjoy their teen years. Teens need to keep life going because every experience that they go through, whether happy or sad, could be a preparation for them to face adulthood. Thank you for inviting me. However, I would like to apologize as I have to decline your invitation. This is because I have another event to attend in London on July 28.. I can’t believe they still remember me. Once a lecturer told us that the tables were flame-proof, so we turned the bunsen burners upside-down and found out he was very wrong. Another incident I remember is when I slid a beaker across the lab bench thinking my friend would grab it, but unfortunately he didn’t see it and the glass shattered everywhere. I would like to suggest 21st August as I will be back in Malaysia by then. I will be able to come to Achiever College and see my former lecturers and meet the students then. I hope this date would be okay with you. Yours sincerely, Queenie Peters Task 2 (Accept all suitable answers.) MUET (Answer) 3rd.indd 326 18-May-23 4:42:48 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
