Circle the correct meaning of the words from the text. LS 3.2.3 Blackout! On 10 July, there was a major power outage. As a result, Klang Valley, Penang and Negeri Sembilan were plunged into darkness. Millions of people living in these areas didn’t have electricity at 10.40 p.m. Many of them were sleeping when the electricity went out. However, there were others who were caught unawares because the outage affected public services. The trains stopped running while people were travelling to various inter-city destinations. Traffic lights didn’t function. Bus drivers were driving slowly when they approached junctions. Flights were cancelled too. “I was walking through the gate when the lights went out,” said Mr Cheng, a passenger who was about to board a flight to Bangkok. “Many passengers were preparing to board their planes when everything went dark. I didn’t know what was happening. Parents were consoling their frightened children when a staff member announced there was a major blackout in the area.” Even network providers were affected because people couldn’t access the internet on their mobile phones. Power was restored in most areas at 1.00 a.m. However, people in the Klang Valley only got the power back at 4.30 a.m. An investigation revealed that a faulty appliance at one of the major substation power plants triggered the blackout. 1 plunged A force to do something B push something quickly C experience something unpleasant 2 unawares A unexpectedly B not surprised C without preparation 3 affected A changed B influenced C pretended 4 consoling A caring B comforting C feeling sorry 5 faulty A weak B breakable C damaged 6 triggered A started B found C made Kuasai PBD Eng Y6(U1).indd 5 06/10/2023 10:57 AM

I walked along the lava rock trail, across the beach and mangrove swamps. I loved the changing landscape. How is it possible for one island to have so many different landscapes? Thursday I went sea kayaking. The island is a national park, so visitors have to follow strict guidelines when exploring it. Flora, fauna and island preservation is very important. After reading the guidelines, I paddled along the shoreline. I enjoyed the scenery but I loved it when the penguins and sea lions swam next to our kayaks. Friday What a wonderful cycling adventure! I signed up for a cycling tour. A local guide led us around the island. It was a fun and educational tour. I learnt a lot about the island’s flora and fauna and island way of life. 1 The briefing was to inform the snorkellers about the waters and currents for their safety. 2 Ashok used his underwater camera to take pictures of the marine life. 3 During the hiking trip, Ashok was shown many different landscapes including the lava rock trail. 4 The national park has strict guidelines for visitors to preserve the island. 5 Ashok was able to learn many things during the cycling tour from the local guide . It’s whale season in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and I’m thrilled to swim with humpback whales . The boat left very early out to the open sea . When the captain spotted some whales , he stopped the boat. What an amazing sight! Even though they were about 100 m away , they looked huge. After a briefing , I put on my wet suit and snorkelling gear . Then, I jumped into the water . It was warm but I felt a chill. How exciting! I held on tightly to a floating line attached to the boat and waited. Soon, a few whales swam close by . Their size didn’t scare me. But my heart was racing ! They were close enough to touch. Potato crisps are thinly cut potatoes that are either baked or fried. They are salted and seasoned to add flavour. Barbecue, hot and spicy, ketchup and sour cream and onion are some of the popular flavours. To make the crisps, good quality potatoes are used. They move along a conveyor belt to an automatic peeling machine. Peeled potatoes are washed with cold water. Then, they are thinly sliced. After that, the slices are washed again with cold water. The potato slices pass under air jets to remove excess water. Next, the slices are fried in very hot oil and then salt is sprinkled on them. After that, the hot and salted crisps are sent along a conveyor belt. Here, the crisps are cooled and excess oil is drained. They go through a sorter and burnt slices are removed. Finally, the potato crisps are filled into bags. Each bag weighs the same. The right amount of air is left in each bag before it is sealed. The sealed bags are sent down to workers waiting to hand-pack them into boxes.
