The Dishonest Hand
Once a thief was brought before a judge and was
charged that he made a hole in the wall of a man’s
house and stole a chest of jewels. The thief fell
upon his knees and cried, and then told the judge
that he was a poor and honest person. It was, he
said, his right hand which would give him trouble
by its wicked deeds. The thief said, “My hand
made the hole and went through the wall and stole the jewels while I stayed
outside the wall. I did not go into the house. Therefore, I am not a thief.”
The judge then replied, “You are indeed an honest man and so should be
pitied but your wicked hand shall go to prison for five years. You may stay
outside the prison like you did while your hand stole the jewels.”
On hearing the verdict of the judge, the thief realized that it was not his hand
but his mind worked. His hand did whatever his mind asked him to do. He
thought that he would get rid of problem by blaming the hand for stealing the
jewels but the story of his dishonest hand prevailed the truth.
