Everyone wants to enjoy good health. No one wants any illness. Illness gives
troubles and misery. If a person is ill, his life becomes burdensome. Illness
disturbs the flow of life in a person.
There is an old maxim-healthy mind lives in a healthy body. In today's world
this maxim is quite true. Today we undergo a lot of stress. People, in all walks
of life, have no mental peace.
They have no rest and repose. They have no time to enjoy the beauty of
nature. They are also tormented. Lack of mental peace gives birth to many
diseases.
Many people suffer from many diseases. Some suffer from heart-ailments,
some from diabetes and some from other diseases.
In this situation it is not easy to enjoy a good health.
Healthy habits are very necessary to develop for keeping oneself healthy. The
most important healthy habit is to rise early in the morning. Early rising keeps
a person hale and hearty.
6 New Spark English Reader Class 5
If a person rises early and comes out of his house for a walk in an open
area, he always remains healthy. Early in the morning, the air is fresh.
Fresh air gives us vigour and vitality. Morning walk refreshes our mind
and body. It activates energy. It also controls our weight. It is very useful
for heart and diabetic patients.
Cleanliness is necessary for a healthy and happy life. It is said that
cleanliness is next to godliness. We must have both internal and external
cleanliness.
Just after getting up in the morning, we should brush our teeth. This
should be done regularly. Dirty teeth give a bad smell. It also leads to
digestive problems. We should also have habit of regular cutting of nails.
We should take care of our body by keeping it clean. It can be done by
regular bath or wash. We should also keep our house neat and clean. We
should not throw garbage around our houses. Besides our houses, we
should also keep our school campus, playground, lanes and roads clean.
Drains, outside our houses should also be cleaned at equal intervals. Dirty
water must not stagnate near our houses. Safe and clean water should
only be used for cooking and drinking.
A healthy body depends on the quality of food we take. Food gives us
energy to work and play. It also helps us to grow. It protects us from
diseases.
7 New Spark English Reader Class 5
We eat different kinds of food. These contain substances useful for our body.
These substances are called nutrients. But we must have balanced diet. It
must have carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Rice, wheat,
sugar, honey, butter, ghee, fish, meat, egg, milk, fruits and fresh vegetables
give us these things. Milk is a very good source of vitamins. It is a very
nutritious drink for children. It enhances longevity. It has also the properties
to cure us from diseases.
Sometimes people get ill. They should then consult a doctor. The doctor
examines their body and prescribes medicines. These medicines cure us
from the diseases. Diseases are also cured by homeopathic and Ayurbedic

medicines. Now a days people have started Naturopathy and Yoga to cure
themselves from many diseases.
It is said that prevention is better than cure. It is correct. We must be very
cautious against many diseases. We must also be alert to the factors leading
to these diseases. If this is done, we would be able to lead a happy and
disease free life.

Forestier. Mrs. Forestier took the necklace but did not notice the difference.
Now the sunny days of Mr. And Mrs. Loisel had gone. They had to pay the
debt. Mrs. Loisel bravely faced this situation. The maid was dismissed, the
flat where they lived was given up, and they shifted to a garret. Mrs. Loisel did
all her household works and was always dressed like a working woman. She
used to go to market herself to buy household things. She bargained, argued
and fought to save every penny. Mr. Loisel did overtime after his office work
at some shopkeeper's accounts. He also worked at home in midnights for a
few francs. This life continued for ten years and after this they paid off every
loan to the last amount including the interest.
But this had a great effect. Mrs. Loisel looked like an old woman. She
became a typical poor man's wife. She was rough and coarse. Her dress was
untidy and her hair was uncombed. Sometimes when Mr. Loisel was at his
office, she used to sit by the window and would think of that evening, the
evening of her beauty and splendid life. In what situation she would have
been today if she had not lost the necklace? What fate was it! How had a
small thing changed her life?
One evening she was in the market with Mr. Loisel when she saw a lady with
a child. She recognised Mrs. Forestier, who looked as young, as pretty and
as attractive as ever. First Mrs. Loisel hesitated to speak to her.

But as the debt was paid, she decided to speak to her and tell her the whole
story. “Good morning, Mrs. Forestier!” she went up to her and said. Mrs.
Forestier did not recognise her. “I am Mrs. Loisel , your friend”, said Mrs.
Loisel.
Her friend gave a cry, “Oh, my dear friend! How have you changed!”
“Yes, I have been through a very hard time, since we met last”, she said and
narrated the whole story. Mr. Forestier was shocked.
“You mean that you bought a diamond necklace to replace mine?”
“Yes, and you did not notice it? They were certainly very much alike. And that
costed our life” replied Mrs. Loisel with pride and satisfaction.
But Mrs. Forestier seized her head with both of her hands in great distress.
“Oh, my poor, dear Loisel Mine was only an imitation. It costed only five
hundred francs!”

One day, a wealthy farmer who owned hundreds of cows and bulls decided

The bull had thrown the cowboy from his horse. The cowboy tried to get
back on his horse several times. But each time, the bull charged, and the
cowboy ran to hide in a hole in the ground.
The farmer called out to the cowboy, “Why don't you just stay in that hole
until someone catches the bull and puts it back in its pen?” “I can't do that,
Sir,” replied the cowboy. 'There's a nasty bear in this hole!”

No body knows when did this happen? Perhaps hundreds of years ago.
Once there was a king who was very kind to his people and sincere in his
duties. He always wanted to keep himself in touch with his people.
Periodically he called meetings of representatives of people. These meetings
were also attended by his ministers.
But there was a problem. There was not a good and spacious meeting hall.
The present meeting hall could not accommodate so many people at a time.
One day the king called his Prime Minister and said, “I want a large meeting
hall to be built. Will this be done please?”
“Of course! His majesty”, the Prime minister replied. “This work will be done
as soon as possible.” The next day the Prime minister engaged hundreds of
workers on this job and in a few months the meeting hall was ready.

On the day of the opening ceremony of the meeting hall, every body came–
the king, his ministers, commander-in-chief of army, and representatives of
people. After the ceremony, the king entered the meeting hall, followed by
others to conduct a meeting.
But what was this? Inside the hall there was no light at all and everybody was
bumping into everybody. The king came out of the hall in a hurry, followed by
others. “Who is the idiot who designed this hall”, shouted the king with anger,
“come forward and your head shall be cut off”. The ministers pushed the
Prime minister before the king. “Your majesty”, he said, trembling with tear, “I
shall make immediate arrangements for light”.
Next day the Prime minister called some of his loyal men and said, “My dear
brothers, we all have to work together to solve this problem. Every one of you
must go inside the hall and catch handfuls of darkness and throw it out.
Thereafter, you must catch handfuls of sunlight and release it inside the hall”.
Everyone set to work with a will. They went in, caught handfuls of darkness,
took it out and released it. Then they caught handfuls of sunlight and released
it inside the meeting hall in the same way.
But even after several tips, there was no improvement inside the hall. It
remained dark as ever.
When the king knew this, he was most annoyed. “Prime minister”, he said, “If
you want your head to remain attached to your body, better come up with a
brighter idea”.
The prime minister thought and thought.
Then he came with a new idea. “Your Majesty. I have got a new idea. We
shall have the roof taken off and then we will have all the light we want”.
The king agreed and again the workers got down to work. Soon the roof was
taken off and kept aside.
47 New Spark English Reader Class 5
Ah! Now there was as much light as one could wish for, and plenty of fresh air
too. The king was very happy and forgot all about the beheading of the Prime
minister. Once again he went inside the meeting hall with others and started
the meeting.
But alas! Clouds rolled up in the sky and it started raining and all were wet.
“Now that wasn't much good, was it?”, said the king to his Prime minister who
was shivering with fright. “Have you any more bright idea”.
But the Prime minister had run out of ideas. Someone from the crowd
suggested, “we can put the roof on when it rains and take it off when it stops
raining”.
The Prime minister did not like any other person to take credit for a
suggestion. So he said “Your majesty, this idea is good. I had also thought
about it. I was going to tell this to you.”
“All right”, said the king, “let us try this”.
So the meeting hall began to be used for open-air meetings every day. When
it rained the roof was put on and the meeting stopped.
One day a meeting was in progress when storm clouds began to build up in
the sky. Then it started raining. The roof was quickly put on and everybody
sat inside the meeting hall in complete darkness.
Suddenly, through a hole in the wall, the king and other too, saw a flash of
lightning.

“Got it!”, the king shouted with joy, “I have found the solution!”
The Prime minister too had to express happiness.
“Found solution! Your majesty! Yes, please tell us. What is that?”
“Make holes in the walls at different places”, said the king, “Till we have all the
light we want. And there is no need to take off the roof again.”
Plenty of holes were made in patterns in all the four walls.
And that is how windows were born.
