In those days Switzerland was

Austria. The Austrians cruelly
oppressed the Swiss. The Swiss
were freedom loving people. William Tell was a brave, bold and freedom
loving man in Switzerland. He was tall and strong.

65 New Spark English Reader Class 5
There was always a look of bright happiness in his eyes. He lived in the
mountains of Switzerland. He was the best bowman and a skilful sailor.
The cap of the Duke of Austria was put up on a long pole in the market place;
every one who passed through the road, had to salute the cap. Meanwhile
William was surrounded by a crowd of people. The crowd wanted to see what
William replied. “What! Salute! Why? I have done nothing wrong?” replied
William facing the soldiers. “You didn't salute the Duke's cap”, said the
soldier. William was surprised, “Why should I bow before an empty cap on the
pole?”
It made the soldiers angry. They captured William Tell and his son and took
them to the Governor of the town. He was an Austrian named Gessler, a cruel
tyrant. “This man has not saluted the Duke's cap in the market place and he is
also making other people insult the cap by not saluting it”, said the soldiers to
the Governor. “No, this is not true”, replied William, “My fault is only that I
didn't salute the cap”.
Gessler caught hold of William's son, told his soldiers to tie the boy to a tree
at some distance and said, “William, you insulted the Duke by not saluting his
cap. You are a traitor. You will have to pay for it.” Then he ordered one of his
soldiers to put an apple on the child's head. “What is this?” asked William. “I
have heard that you are a very skillful bowman. I want to see your aim. If from
this point, you can shoot and arrow and pierce the apple, I will spare you and
your son's life. If you miss, or refuse to shoot, you will face death”, said
Gessler.
William's eyes flashed with anger. But hiding it, he said, “I am ready”. A
soldier gave him a bow. He took two arrows from his quiver, stuck one in his
belt and the other on the bow. He stood for a moment in silence, praying to
God. Then he raised his head and took aim.
The onlookers held their breath. The arrow shot forward and cut the apple
into two. The onlookers shouted with joy. “Good shot”, said Gessler, “But tell
me why did you take two arrows and stuck one in your belt? What was the
second arrow for?”
“It was for you, cruel tyrant”, replied William Tell.
“I have promised not to kill you, So I will not kill you. But I am going to
imprison you for the rest of your life”, said Gessler.
William Tell was chained and kept in a ship which was to sail to another
place. The ship set sail, But a storm broke out and diverted it off its way. The
crew on the ship were in danger. The Governor was also on the ship. He was
told that William Tell was a skilled sailor. “Take off his chains”, ordered the
Governor, “And tell him to control the ship”.
66 New Spark English Reader Class 5
William Tell brought the ship under control, but instead of sailing forward, he
sailed the ship back, towards the shore. When the ship reached the shore,
William Tell jumped from it and fled out of sight. He hid by the roadside and
waited for Gessler. Soon Gessler passed through that way with his soldiers,
looking for William Tell.
William Tell, who was waiting for Gessler, took aim and shot an arrow. The
arrow hit Gessler and killed him.
Later William Tell fought for the freedom of his country. People loved and
respected him much. The people wanted to make him the king but very
politely, he refused.

Namaste is a traditional Nepali custom. It is made up of two Sanskrit words
'Namah' and 'te' which mean 'I bow to you'. The palms are joined and kept
close to the chest and the head is slightly bowed. This is not just a polite
greeting; people in the old days believed it to be a way of getting happiness and
prosperity. They explain that the use of the word 'Namah' means 'I recognise
the God in you.' When a person greets another with this feeling, he shows him
great respect. Such a beautiful thought lies behind a simple gesture. In different
parts of our country, different words accompany the gesture of joined hands.

Don’t worry dear, said Malu’s mother,
Do as I do, that’s all, she advised her.
She had no choice, no other way,
Malu had to swim that day.
Tight she gripped her mother’s hand,
Into the water splash! to land.
Brave mother’s brave young daughter!
Doubt and fear she left behind her.
Malu swam with all her might,
It didn't matter wrong or right.
But swimming came so naturally,
Her mother knew this and all could see.
Fearless was Malu, this she knew,
Not just brave, but special too.

It was the year 1820, when a very
pretty girl was born in a doctor's
family. She was given the name-
Florence Nightingale. This was a
very rich family and so many
guests used to visit here usually.
Since childhood, Florence was
very kind and sympathetic to all.
One day she was very happy,
watching the birds perching on the
branches of the trees in the garden of her mansion. She listened to their
joyous and sweet notes with delight.

Suddenly a bird toppled down to the ground. Florence rushed to the place
where it lay. She examined it and saw that it was fluttering its wings feebly.
Then she picked up the bird gently. Comforted it by her kind touch, brought it
to her room and treated it with great care. In a few days the bird recovered.
Then Florence made the bird fly to its place.
On another occasion Florence noticed a dog limping badly due to a painful
wound. She bandaged its wounded leg and nursed it till it was well. On yet
another occasion she saw a sick man lying on the road side. She took him
home and served him milk, fruit and medicines.
When Florence became young, she visited poor and needy families with her
mother. She served needy and ailing persons, who used to wait for her. Her
parents did not prevent her from this social service. They encouraged her to
go ahead in this field.
Such was the hobby of the gentle, kind and caring girl which inspired her to
do the services of ailing persons. Later on, she decided that she must
become a nurse and give her life for the sick and the poor.
In those days England was fighting many battles in distant places. By the
time Florence had studied nursing and after her studies she started her job as
a nurse in a government hospital in London. Ignoring the dangers involved in
the long journerys to those far of places in other countries, she went there to
attend to the sick and wounded soldiers. She worked day and night in
adverse condition with no satisfactory arrangements for board and lodging.
Then a war broke out in Crimea and she, along with thirty eight nurses, went
there to make the soldiers feel comfortable. Denying herself even sleep at
night, she saved the lives of thousand soldiers by her great nursing. She went
from one bed to another in the wards, with a lantern in her hand, cheering
and comforting each patient. The patients would kiss her shadow when she
passed by them. Due to over work, she fell ill with fever but she did not stop
her work.

Florence set up a nursing institute-The Nightiangale School for Nurses-in
London to train young women. She produced so many talented nurses in her
institute, who went to different parts of the country and the world to serve
humanity. Florence lived a long life of ninety years. As long as she was alive
she did her job with perfection. She is remembered most by the soldiers of
Crimean war. They called her 'The lady with the lamp' because she used to
come to their bedsides at night with a lantern to check them up during the
lonely and painful nights.
The lantern has gone for ever, but the flame of the spirit of selfless service,
which she infused in the profession of nursing, still shines brightly all over the
world.

snakes. Snakes are a kind of reptiles.
Aashutosh: Excuse me Sir, What is a reptile?
Teacher: A reptile is a member of the class of cold-blooded animals which
have a backbone and rough or scaly skin. Snakes are found in
warm countries. They are also found in Nepal. There are many
kinds of snakes. Some are big, some are small, some are fat
and some are thin.
Gopal: Sir last Sunday I went to the Zoo with my parents. There I saw a
very big and fat snake. It was python.
89 New Spark English Reader Class 5
Teacher: you are right, Gopal. The big and fat snake you saw is called
python. It is one of the biggest and heaviest snakes in the world.
The length of this snake is from two metres to five metres. It
does not bite. Instead, it swallows its food. A large python can
swallow bigger animals such as antelope, kangaroo and even
leopard. Though it usually eats smaller animals.
Ravi: It is very amazing, Sir.
Teacher: Yes, It is very amazing. It is interesting too.
Mohan: Sir, how does a snake walk?
Teacher: The snake has no legs. It moves on its belly. It crawls on the
ground. But it moves very fast. The snake has no ears.
Aashutosh: Sir, if the snake has no ears, then how does it hear?
Teacher: Aashutosh, you have put a very good question. The snake
hears the sound vibration from the ground through its skin.
Nutan: Sir, how does the snake smell?
Teacher: The snake smells with its tongue. The tongue picks up scent
particles from the air. The tongue of the snake is forked. It
always flicks in and out from a snake's mouth.
Kundan: Sir, please tell us about poisonous snakes.
Teacher: Yes, out of eleven families of snakes, three families are
poisonous. King Cobra, Krait, Viper and Sea snakes are
poisonous snakes. King cobra is the most poisonous snake in
the world. It is recognised by its hood. The length of this snake
is one metre to four metres. It feeds on other small snakes. The
Krait is another deadly poisonous snake. It is smaller in size.
All students: Thank you, sir. You have given us very important and
interesting information.
The children have listened to the audio. Now the teacher asks some
questions based on the dialogue. He instructs the children to answer

And he sometimes gets so little that

But my lazy little shadow, like an

Had stayed at home behind me and
