A word pad is a word processing program available on the windows
operating system which allows us to create the documents and edit as
per the requirement of the user. It is also a text-editing program where
we can create, edit, view, and format the documents. We can use it for
document editieng, creating letters, copying and pasting the documents
and for the other documentation work as per our requirement. The
wordpad is not as advanced and popular as Microsoft Word.
Starting wordpad
Press the windows key from the keyboard.
Type Wordpad and click on the WordPad from the Search
box as below.
A word pad working windows will appear as below.

Components of word pad windows
1. Quick access tool bar: It holds the mostly used commands
like save, undo, redo, etc.
2. Title bar: It displays the name of currently used document's
name.
3. Control buttons: It helps to control the size of the
application windows.
4. Ribbon: It contains the icons and commands.
5. Text area: It is the working area of the word pad.
6. Ruler: It helps to set the margin of the documents.
7. Zoom control: It helps to control the view size of the
document.
8. Status bar: It displays the information about the current
working document.
Typing text
In word pad, we can type the text and apply the required
formatting. When we open the word pad, we can see the cursor
in the working area which means we are ready to type the text.
Tips during typing
Use all ten fingers to perform better typing speed.
Use the Enter key to change the line of the text.
Use the Space bar key to separate the text (word or letter).
Use the Backspace or Delete key to delete the wrong word
or letter.
Press the Shift and Alphabet key together to display the
character in uppercase.
Press the Escape key if any unnecessary windows appear on
the screen.

If your cursor is at the last position of the line, press the
Home key to bring the cursor at first.
If your cursor is at the first position of the line, press the
End key to send the cursor at last.
Saving the document
After the preparation of the document,
you must have to save so that you can get it
whenever you need. You can use the given
steps to save the documents.
Click on the file tab.
Select the save option.
A window will appear as below.
Select the required location and type the name of file on the
file name box.
Finally click on the save button to save your document.

Opening the document
You can open your saved document whenever
you need. You can use the given steps to open
a file in word pad.
Click on file tab.
Select open option.
A window will appear as below.
Select the location where you have saved your document.
Select your document that you need to open.
Finally, click on the open button to open or view your file.
Creating new document
We can create a new document in word
pad with the help of given steps.
Click on the file tab.
Select the new option.
A new working screen will appear.

Working with home tab
Home tab has the various options like clipboard, font, paragraph,
insert and editing. In previous class we discussed about the
clipboard, font and paragraph group. Now, here we will learn about
insert and editing group. Insert group has the various options such
as picture, paint drawing, date and time and insert object.
Inserting picture on word pad
You can insert the pictures in a word pad document with the help
of the picture icon. You can also change the picture and resize the
picture with the help of the picture icon.
Steps
Place the cursor where you
want to insert the picture.
Click on the home tab.
Move your mouse on the
insert group.
Click on the picture button.

A dialog box will appear.
Select the picture location and click on the required picture.
Click on the open button to place the picture on the word
pad document.
Change picture
If you want to replace the current picture with new picture, you
can use the change picture option which is available in the picture
icon of insert group.
Steps
Place any one picture in word pad.
Right click over the picture to select it.
Click on the change picture option.
A next dialogue box will appear with a list of pictures as
below.

Click on the required picture name and click on the open
button.
Now, the previous picture will replace with a new picture as
below.
Resize picture
This option helps to change the size of the picture either larger or
smaller.
Steps
Place any picture in a word pad.
Single click over the picture to
select it.
Click on home tab and move the
mouse on the insert group.
Click on the drop down list of
picture icon.
The options will appear as given in
right side.
Choose the Resize picture option.
A next resize dialogue box will
appear as below.

Type the new value in the horizontal box to change the size
of the picture.
Vertical size will automatically change if the Lock Aspect
Ratio is active.
(If the Lock Aspect Ratio is not active, you can manually
type the value in vertical box)
Click on the OK button to apply the changes.
Now the picture size will be changed as given below.

Inserting Paint drawing picture
This option allows you to place the picture directly from the paint
program. You can create your own drawing in paint and place it
into word pad.
Steps
Click on the Home tab and
move the mouse on the insert
group.
Click on the Paint drawing
icon.
You will get the system of paint
program.
Prepare the drawing in paint
as given.
Click on the file tab and choose
the exit and return to document
option to place the paint picture
in wordpad.

Now, the picture will appear in the word pad document.
Inserting date and time
You can directly place the system date and time with the help of
this option.
Steps
Click on the Home tab and move the
mouse on the insert group.
Click on the Date and time icon.
You will get the various date and time
format as given.
Select the available formats of date
and time.
Click on the OK button to insert data
and time in the document.
Insert Object
You can insert the various types of objects with the help of insert
object icon. You can use the create new and create from file option
to place the required object in the word pad document.

Creating picture from file
Click on the home tab and move to the
insert group.
Select insert object icon.
A new insert object window will
appear.
Click on the Create from file radio button.
Click on the browse box.
Select the required location, where picture is located and
choose the picture name then click on the open button.
After this, click on the OK button.
Now, your picture will appear in the word pad document.

Working with find & replace
Find is the process of locating or searching
the letters, characters or words in the
document where as replace is the way of
changing or replacing the words, letters
or characters with a new word, letter or
character.
Find
Steps
Type some text on word pad.
Click on the home tab and move the mouse on editing group.
Click on the Find icon.
A find box will appear.
Type the required text or letter or word on the find what box.
Click on the find next button.
Now the letter or word or text will be highlighted in the
document as above.

Replace
Steps
Type some text.
Click on the home tab and move the mouse on the editing
group.
Click on the replace icon
A replace box will appear.
Type the text or letter or word on the find what box to which
you want to change with new word.
Type the new word that you want to place in replace with
box.
Click on the Replace button to change one by one or click on
the Replace All button to replace the all words.
(in the above box the previous word changing is replace by making)

Select all
This option allows you to select all the documents at a same time
with a single click.
Steps:
Type the required text.
Click on the home tab and move the
mouse on editing group.
Click on the Select all icon.
Now, the document with get selected as
below.
Inserting bullet and numbering
Place the cursor where you want to
start bullet and numbering.
Click on the home tab and move the
mouse on the paragraph group.
Click on drop down list of start a list
option.
A list of options will appear.
Click on the required type of bullet
or number style as your required.
Now, the bullet or number will appear on the document.

Working with view tab
This tab has various options. We can use this tab to work with
zoom, show or hide and settings group.
Zoom group
Zoom in : It is the way of changing the
viewing size of picture in large format.
Zoom out : It is the way of changing
the viewing size of the picture in small
format.
100%: It is the fix value of viewing the
size of image.
Steps to zoom in
Open word pad document.
Click on the view tab.
Move the mouse on the zoom group and click on Zoom in.
The viewing size of the document screen will be larger.
Steps to zoom out
Open word pad document.
Click on the view tab.
Move the mouse on the zoom group and click on zoom out.
The viewing size of the document screen will be smaller.

When you make the viewing size of image either larger or smaller,
you can click on 100% option in zoom group so that you will see
the actual size of your image again.
Show or hide group
This option helps to show or hide the ruler and
status bar.
To show:
Steps:
Click on the Rulers check box option to display the scale of
the screen.
Click on the Status bar check box to display the zoom size of
the document.
To hide:
Click on the Rulers check box (remove the tick sign) to hide
the scale of the screen.
Click on the Status bar check box (remove the tick sign) to
hide the status bar.

work together to be a complete
computer system. In the absence of
any one unit, the computer is incomplete. The combination
of input unit, central processing unit, output unit and
secondary storage unit is called computer system.
A computer system consists of two major elements they are:
• Hardware
• Software.
The computer hardware is the collection of
all the parts that we can physically touch.
The software is a set of instructions for a
computer to perform specific operations
that we cannot touch or feel. The hardware
and software must work together to
perform the task given by the user.
