Culture, sustainability and ecology are among the important issues
that the contributors of this book thought worthwhile to explore. In the
discipline of built environment, the reconciling of the issues observed
to implicate aesthetics visually and philosophically. Perhaps, among
the laymen, aesthetics is not a popular word used to describe beauty
of an object.

Architecture and Society : Some Lessons on Muslim Architecture
from India
Spahic Omer
ISBN 978-967-418-402-5
Pages : 158
Price : RM 50.00 / € 20.00
Year : 2015
This book deals with the subject of the relationship between Muslim
architecture and society and how they influence each other, taking
some social and historical segments of complex Indian society as a
case study. The book consists of three independent studies which
cover three vital aspects of Muslim architecture, especially in India:
1) Converting Hindu temples into mosques;
2) The royal funerary architecture of the Mughals;
3) The social significance of Mr. Nazeer Khan’s architecture.

The book aims to reflect on the three mentioned aspects, emphasizing in the process some
notable at once spiritual and social qualities of Muslim architecture in general and in India
in particular. The lessons expounded in the book revolve around the universal, fluid, multi-
dimensional and value-loaded character of Muslim architecture that always eventually comes
to the fore in any given socio-economic, religious and cultural context.

Architecture as a Celebration of Multi-Culturalism

Price : RM 35.00 / € 10.00

Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, India, a UNESCO World
Heritage site, has been the subject of various
scholarly articles and books in the past. This book
represents a revisit to this famous complex as
a constant reminder of a multi-cultural and multi-
faith stance of the Mughal civilisation in general,
and a hallmark of Akhbar’s reign and philosophy
of leadership in particular. One is constantly
reminded of the possibilities of human and cultural co-existence – unity
within multiplicity-where traditions from different religious, world views
and backgrounds come together. It is this distinctive balance and
equipoise between different worlds and cultures that embodies Fatehpur
Sikri.

This ethos is reflected in the many aspect of the architecture of this
complex – from its unique and innovative style from diverse religious
and cultures - to its ingenious planning, layout and exquisite architectural
details. There is a powerful synthesis of various regional schools of
architectural craftsmanship such as Gujarat and Bengal, Hindu and Jain
architecture and traditional Islamic elements. According to contemporary
historians, seeking to have the best of worlds, including to retain the
memory of his past heritage and yet to celebrate the present, Akhbar
sought and managed to combine strands from his ancestor’s Persian style
with the influence of Indian traditions which is celebrated amongst others
in the typically Indian ornamentation based on the pattern and forms
derived from Arab-Islamic and central Asian traditions. In its entirety, the
monuments at Fatehpur Sikri celebrate the notion of the co-existence of
man-kind and cultures. The assimilation of diverse regional architectural
influences and the all-embracing ethos of the Mughal civilisation of its
time is brought to light in an analysis of this complex.

A comprehensive awareness of the benefits of therapeutic gardens
can help build more parks for the benefit of the public. In addition to
the hospital and health center landscape, this construction should be
carried out in various other public landscapes. Lack of awareness of
the benefits of such parks comes from lack of funds, initiatives from the
authorities and information about them. It is seen that the construction
of a therapeutic garden is limited to the hospital landscape. If this
scenario could be extended to public landscapes such as residential
homes, shopping malls, high street rests, elderly welfare homes and industrial areas, then
green space and therapeutic treatment could be a comprehensive health-care concept while
also enlightening the environment. Besides being able to visualize the space of the landscape,
the community can also appreciate the nature elements as one of the key features of medical
therapy. The beauty, freshness and ability to restore health in a therapeutic garden can inspire
and help the community to love the environment, increase awareness of the preservation
of nature and improve the quality of life. This book presents some theories of aesthetics,
perception and behavioral psychology that highlight the role of landscape architecture that
needs to be understood and reviewed. The combination of knowledge among nature lovers,
medical practitioners, architects, urban planners, psychologists or visual artists is seen as
provoking a more practical and effective idea. The Yin and Yang philosophies and the Zen
Garden concept have been elaborated to support the aforementioned theories. As the people
aware to appreciate the therapeutic essence of natural resources, the support from authorities
is no less important.

This book intends to fill somewhat the glaring intellectual gap in the
sphere of authentic Islamic architecture. It provides a theoretical
or philosophical framework for studying and teaching Islamic
architecture on the basis of some of the most authentic sources of
Islamic scholarship. Against the backdrop of such a broad framework,
various Islamic architecture themes and dimensions could be more
accurately studied and understood. The book is also envisaged
as an invitation to other researchers and scholars from across the
spectrum of especially Islamic scholarship to embark on similar undertakings and do justice
to the fascinating phenomenon of Islamic architecture, enriching in the process academic
communities and their libraries.

The Philosophy of National Education (FPN), and later the National
Philosophy of Education (FPK) is three decades old. Over the past 30
years, the world has changed dramatically, some based on the rapid
development of local and global education, and on the other hand,
by many, especially industry and other ideologies, on the education
world. This factor is enough to signal that education should be supported and guided so that it
is not dragged here and there until it is out of our own goals and mold. This, in turn, confirms
that no matter what its assessment is, FPK is still relevant and appropriate for the 21st century
in pursuing a national and global education agenda. In fact, this is one of the main purposes
of this book, which is to give FPK a new breath in keeping with the times and circumstances.
To this end, several authors who are experts in their respective fields have been invited to
share their knowledge and experience in navigating FPK into the new world without ignoring
the history, wisdom and fluidity involved in shaping and designing FPK as the main framework
of national education.

Towards an Islamic Curriculum:
Principles and Issues

Pages : 319

Many books have been written on the
principles of curriculum, its foundations,
theories, designs, practices and issues.
However, these curriculum foundations
and theories are largely based on Western
ideas about knowledge whose foundation
is liberal and secular. Although knowledge
has been variously classified by great
Muslim scholars, there is a dearth of curriculum texts based on
the Islamic epistemological framework. This book was written
to fill this vacuum. The first part discusses the principles and
philosophical foundations of an Islamic education curriculum, and
then moves on to deal with the problems of liberal and secular
education, focusing specifically on dualistic educational systems
that have beleaguered Muslim nations worldwide. As a resolution,
several curriculum models of higher education are examined.
The second part examines the issues with traditional teaching
methods applied in Muslim education in light of globalization. The
curriculum of teacher education and Islamic Studies programs are
evaluated. The third part discusses the necessity of reclaiming
Islam’s pragmatism and reviving philosophy and philosophical
inquiry in Islamic education as a prerequisite for the advancement
of critical and creative thinking. Finally, the fourth part examines
in depth the identity issues affecting Muslims as minorities in
multicultural settings, and the nature and role of women education
vis-à-vis men education. The objectives of the books will have
been attained if readers reach a better understanding of the
principles and issues, and are moved to act and transform Islamic
education.

Financial Inclusiveness of the Poor Beyond Microfinance
Abdul Ghafar Ismail & Abdelrahman Elzahi Saaid Ali

ISBN : 978-967-418-399-8
Pages : 410
Price : RM 250.00 / € 100.00
Year : 2018

This book addresses several issues in developing the Islamic
microfinance institutions. The most challenging issues for microfinance
institutions is between exclusion and inclusion. Costumers are
excluded from the main mainstream financial institutions but they are
included in the Islamic microfinance institutions. Islamic microfinance
institutions have potential to grow due to their ability to bring financial
acess to an underserved market and due to the growing size of this
market, the world’s poorest. However, Islamic microfinance institutions
might fail to serve the targeted group. These failures might be due to the following reasons:
many Islamic microfinance institutions never reach either the minimal scale or the efficiency
level necessary to cover cost; many Islamic microfinance institutions face non-supportive
policy frameworks and daunting physical, social and economic challenges; some Islamic
microfinance institutions fail to manage their funds adequately enough to meet future cash
needs and as a result faced liquidity problems; and some Islamic microfinance institutions
had neither the financial management systems nor the skills required to run a successful
operation.

Islamic Banking is designed to provide an introduction
to Islamic banking and finance for students at
universities and similar tertiary institutions. This
book also a source of general understanding of
the concept of Islamic banking and finance and it
will be beneficent not only for students but also for
the laymen. I believe that the approach to Islamic
banking and finance taken in this book will provide
a solid foundation towards understanding the concept of Islamic finance.
An effort has been made to provide an overview of the principles of Islamic
commercial law in business and Islamic financial dealings. This book has
been written with the objective of conveying an understanding of Islamic
banking and finance, without introducing unnecessary technical terminology
and procedures. It was written to develop a clear understanding of the
prohibition of Riba, the instruments of products offered by Islamic banks, the
contemporary approaches and practices across banks worldwide, and the
challenges and future prospects of Islamic banking. As in the conventional
banking system, the Islamic banking system also has its sources of funds
and various forms of applying these funds in order to generate reasonable
profits and maximixe its shareholders’ wealth. Students will be able to
appreciate and acknowledge the inherent equity of Islamic principles towards
commercial and financial transactions. Needles to say, it is our responsibility
to educate and enlighten the younger generation about the veracity and
authenticity of Islamic ideologies and the undeniable fact that Islam is a
complete way of life. The establishment of the institution of Islamic Banking
and Finance and its continual successful growth during the last four decades
had proved beyond doubt that Muslims around the world can successfully
develop a sound financial system without relying on the Western financial
system. However, the challenges and problems that the Islamic banking
system are facing are discussed in this book to help the students appreciate
the inherent complications associated with economics in every business
environment.

ISBN : 978-967-418-400-1
Pages : 538
Price : RM 280.00 / € 100.00
Year : 2018

The nexus between Maqasid al-Shariah and socio economic
development predictors is considered a new proposition. The book
takes a step to explore the possible links between five elements of
Maqasid al-Shariah classified by Imam Al Ghazali and numerous
variables of socio economic development predictors. The main
contribution of this book lies in translating of Maqasid al-Shariah
from the theoretical level down to the operational level. It develops a
comprehensive list of the variables based on Al-Maqasid al-Shariah
for the welfare of human beings to use in allocating their investible resources to vital sectors
of the economy. This book also highlights six main areas: first, specifies the definition and
conceptualisation of Maqasid al-Shariah as measureable concept; second, suggests various
indicators of socio economic development, how they tie with five objectives of the Maqasid
al-Shariah ; third, evaluates various indicators for the measurement of the multi-dimensions of
Maqasid al-Shariah and to what extent there is cross-dimensional overlap between Maqasid
al-Shariah and socio economic development measurable; fourth, discovers data availability
across various countries that may be relevant/useful in the construction of Maqasid al-Shariah
based Socio-Economic index; fifth, searches out the addresses of various countries that have
such measureable and help construct Maqasid al-Shariah based Socio-Economic index; and
sixth, provide recommendations for further research.

Small and medium enterprises are dominant in every economy
irrespective of its level and stage of development. Naturally,
microenterprises begin small, and then grow to medium size and
ultimately to large size, even though that is not always the case. Having
recognized the overwhelming role of SMEs in terms of employment
generation and income creation through productivity enhancement,
SMEs are being treated as engine of growth particularly in the
developing countries. However, over the last half a century sovereign
governments have been treating different sectors/policies as engines of growth. In the 1960s,
the slogan was, ‘trade not aid’, as an engine of development. Subsequently, the emphasis
has been shifting from import-substitution/inward-looking to

Is it legally correct tosay that indecent assault means an assault, which
has an element of indecency? According to Gibson, in the celebrated
case of R.v. Court (1987) 84 Cr. App. R. 210, (CA), indecent assault
means an assault accompanied by circumstances of indecency on the
part of the defendant towards the complainant, and ‘indecent’ has been
defined as overtly sexual. What has the prosecution got to do to prove
to establish the defendant’s guilt on this charge of indecent assault?
It is said that they must prove two things. Firstly, that the defendant’s
conduct was such that it would appear to an ordinary observer as an affront to modestly;
conduct, which contravenes right-thinking people’s ideas of standards of decent behaviour.
Secondly, that the defendant had an indecent intention in doing what he did. However, in
Malaysia, under section 354 of the Malaysian Penal Code, the term “indecent assault”. The
question is, do the above legal requirements, which were laid down in R.v. Court need to be
fulfilled as the essential ingredients under section 354 of the Malaysian Penal Code?

Issues on Harmonization of Human Rights in Islam

The question harmonization between Islam and human rights is one of
the most debatable issues in contemporary discourse among Muslim
academics. At the root of the controversy lies the question about the
legitimacy of such an academic engagement. This is primarily because
the common perception is that the notion of human rights as embodied
in Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its supplementary
documents is bound by its underlying humanistic assumptions about
humans which are anathema to the Islamic concept of human beings
as bond-servants and vicegerents of God on earth. Accordingly, its reconcilability with Islam in
general and with Shari`ah in particular is a divisive issue among Muslim thinkers. Approaches
range from vehement rejection to liberal treatment even to the extent of compromising fixed
parts of Islamic law. A middle of the road approach within the framework of Islamic legal
methodology of harmonization is still in the making. It is with this agenda in perspective that
the authors of this book have engaged on various topical issues on the subject.

Sexual Harassment in the Education Sector: A Malaysian Perspective
Edited by: Ashgar Ali, Ali Mohamed & Muzaffar Syah Mallow
ISBN 978-967-418-421-6
Pages : 344
Price : RM69.00 / € 30.00
Year : 2016

The book evaluates the law and practice of sexual harassment
with particular focus on Malaysian schools and institutes of higher
education. In an engagement in rigorous and laborious academic
research, we cannot by-pass the realities and challenges of social
problems in our schools and higher institutions of learning. There
are few existing guidelines in combating sexual harassment such
as: Malaysian Penal Code, Criminal Law and Code of Conduct for
Industrial Harmony. However, there is yet to be a proper academic
focus providing a deep investigation and crystal clear explanation in drastically minimizing or
eradicating the prevalence of sexual harassment in schools and higher institutions of learning
by formulating a policy and procedure in eschewing sexual harassment in schools in particular
and society in general in the country. The book at reader’s hand is a collection of chapters
meticulously written by well-rounded and eminent scholars and seasoning academia whose
contributions to an academic field could not be over-exaggerated. The vigorous intellectual
labour to conceptualize and re-conceptualize the sexual harassment has been provided
with a deeper understanding. Indeed, this vital treatise explicitly elaborates and elaborately
explicates on various issues relating to sexual harassment specifically in schools and higher
institutions of learning in the country.

Pages : 349
Price : RM 90.00 / € 40.00

This book is not a study on why men rape women. The main focus
of this book is to analyses and compares some of the legal issues
and difficulties which rape presents in the criminal justice system in
various jurisdictions and how it could and should be addressing them.
The book begins with the historical conception of rape. It proceeds
with the definition and scope of rape according to the modern views
and perspectives. The main concern is on the law of consent. This is
considered to be an important and crucial part in the law relating to
sexual crimes and also has been labeled as “the heart of the rape trial” (See, Jenny Bargen
and Elaine Fishwick, Sexual Assault: A National Perspective (Office of the Status of Women,
Queensland, 1995). It begins with a discussion on the scope of consent and the difference
between the concepts of “against her will” and “without her consent”. It then proceeds to
elaborate the factors that vitiate consent, such as fraud or mistake, incapacity of the victims
that covers consent given by minors and young persons, persons who lack of intellectual
capacity and persons in the state of insensibility or unconsciousness. It continues with the
vitiation of consent by treats or fear. This area will be divided into two parts, first part deals
with threat or fear of bodily harm and the second part deals with threats or fear of non-bodily
harm and other pressures such as sexual exploitation, economic pressure, unlawful detention
or malicious prosecution and sexual blackmail.

Applications of Wasatiyyah in Contemporary Muslim World
Edited by: Ahmad F. Yousif

Pages : 137
Price : RM 80.00 / € 30.00

Islam is a religion of peace and moderation, which encourages
Muslims to avoid extravagance and excess. The Qur'an addresses
the Muslim community as an ummah that is ‘justly balanced’. Muslims,
whether in Malaysia or elsewhere, have been advised to live their
entire life balancing spiritual and materialistic affairs. While they must
focus on religious duties, they are also warned not to neglect worldly
affairs. Even when it comes to performing good deeds, Muslims are
encouraged to pursue a path of moderation. Today, the absolute
majority of Muslims believe that the Prophet’s authentic words, actions, and practices serve
only to further endorse the fact that Islam seeks the middle-path and frowns upon any
extremism or fanaticism. On numerous occasions, Muhammad (pbuh) stressed the fact that
religion should be a matter of ease and not hardship for the people. The Prophet applied this
philosophy to his own lifestyle as well.

fundamental issues related to the application of Divine Revelations, namely the Qur’ān and
Sunnah, as a source of knowledge in our efforts towards Islamisation of human knowledge and
sciences. The book is a humble effort not only to incorporate pertinent new findings pertaining

realisation of the University’s vision of knowledge.

From Mosques to Khanqahs: The Origins and Rise of Sufism
and Sufi Institutions
Spahic Omer
ISBN 978-967-418-414-8
Pages : 226
Price : RM 45.00 / € 20.00
Year : 2016
This book critically examines the theme of the evolution of Sufism
and Sufi institutions from the realm of the mosque institution, which
since its inception functioned as a community development centre,
to independent and self-governing bodies and establishments which
catered to the needs of the ever-proliferating Sufi community. The
religious, social and educational functions of such institutions are
scrutinised; as their impact on the overall development of Islamic
society and culture. The relationships between Sufi institutions
and other Islamic socio-political, educational and religious institutions, such as mosques
and madrasahs (schools or colleges), are also explored. As they are essential for properly
conceptualising and contextualising Sufi establishments and their societal and cultural
significance, the meaning and birth of the Sufism phenomenon and its division into authentic
and pseudo, or theosophical, Sufism, are scrutinised in the first segment of the book.
The study of the origins and rise of Sufism and Sufi institutions is very important as it helps us
understand more than a few aspects of the identity of Islamic urbanism, art and architecture
as well; such is the significance and scope of the theme at hand. Just as the Sufi movement
played a prominent role in shaping the identity of Islamic culture and civilisation, it likewise
played a role in shaping the identity of Islamic built environment, too, in that the latter signifies
the physical locus of the former.

33

The book is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the substance of authentic
Sufism and what sets it apart from both pseudo Sufism and mysticism. Several parallels
between authentic Sufism and mainstream Islamic spirituality and scholarship are drawn.
The second chapter deals with the genesis and meaning of pseudo, or theosophical, Sufism,
and why as a repugnant innovation it is incompatible with the main body of Islamic teachings
and values. Foremost manifestations of pseudo Sufism, such as excessive asceticism and
monasticism, religious laxity, and an evolution from religious innovations to heretical beliefs,
are presented and repudiated.

The third chapter delves into the subject matter of the origins and rise of Sufi institutions. The
discussion revolves around the impact of the mosque institution and the decentralisation of
its multifaceted roles and functions, which themselves evolved into independent bodies and
establishments, on the emergence of first independent Sufi institutions, such as duwayrahs,
ribats, khanqahs, zawiyahs and tekkes. Critical phases in the evolution of Sufi institutions and
their most important features are looked at. The main aspects of the Sufi life and activities in
early Sufi institutions are also examined.

Finally, in the fourth chapter, the main reasons which caused and sustained the continuous
existence of Sufism and Sufi institutions are explored. Four such factors are dwelled on,
namely, the Turkish factor, the Persian factor, the Shi’ah factor, and the ahl al-sunnah wa al-
jama’ah factor.

been misunderstood by Gospel writers and early Christian theologians
for the benefit of du’at who are doing da’wah among the Christians. The writers of the chapters
are knowledgeable about the topics they wrote. They have discussed these topics many
times in class rooms, seminars and conferences. The handbook is compiled specifically for
du’at in the Malay-Indonesian world. For this reason we have included in this handbook topics

Secularism has become a way of life for the modern people of today
and some of them find it a comfortable avenue to balance religion
and reason, worship and work, private and public life, and here and
the hereafter. For many Muslims though, secularism is a threat to
their religious conviction and practices, impairing their understanding
of Islam as religion, and splitting the Muslim unity into several parts.
What is it about secularism that despite the worldly havens it is
bringing to the amelioration of the human life, Muslims find it abhorrent
to their faith and way of life? This book spells out the attempt of a student, and later, lecturer,
of a higher institution of learning in Malaysia that was created to address a very pressing
issue confronting the Muslim world, namely, secularism. To deal with this problem, Muslim
intellectuals, educationists, politicians, thinkers, activists, and policy planners alike were of the
view that a reformulation of Islamic education is the answer.

Islamic Ethics and Character Building

ISBN : 978-967-418-325-7
Pages : 207
Price : RM 60.00 / € 30.00
Year : 2019 (Reprint)
The present book attempts to present Islamic ethics first from
its multifaceted nature; ethics as akhlaq is presented from the
psychological, educational and spiritual aspects and every bit of
character building or ethic is supported by pertinent verses of the
Holy Qur'an, the stories of the Prophets and the sirah and shama'il of
our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Second, an effort is made
to present Islamic ethics from the practical and modern angles. To
enliven the discipline we have relied on Tasawwuf area that have been
neglected by earlier researchers. In fact most of the early sufi scholars such as al-Ghazali,
al-Mu'asibi and al-Balkhi were Islamic psychologists who did their best to spiritually invigorate
their disciples and refine their character. This approach of Sufi ethics or Tasawwuf with its
self-introspection in nature will serve as underpinning of individual and societal wellbeing and
mental health that conditioned the development and prosperity of the ummah.

Islamization of Modern Science and Its Philosophy: A Contemporary

Price : RM 69.00 / € 30.00

Dr. Mumtaz Ali’s book is a wide-ranging survey of the history
and development of science. He shows the unprecedented and
seminal role of the Qur’an upon human thought and the enormous
methodological debt modern western science owes to truth-based
science’s contribution to thehuman intellectual heritage. Just as
importantly, he makes it clear that, despite claimsto neutrality and
objectivity, modern Western science, like all human activities reflects
the modern Western assumptions of its practitioners. Hence, he calls
that science ‘modern Western science’ which, he argues, is based on a false view of life and
the world. He advocates for the revival of that truth-based science. Since truth-based science
had fallen into a deathlike coma, there has been no one to challenge those assumptions until
recently. Dr. Ali strives to sketch the unique characteristics of truth-based science that can help
provide an alternative to modern Western science that dominates scientific endeavours in the
modern world. Hence, he defines Islamization of modern Western science and its philosophy.

Issues in Islamization of Human Knowledge

The issue of Islamization of Human Knowledge is not only a typical
one but has held a marked appeal for scholars and students within
both Islamic education centers and higher institutions of learning
across the world. And yet, despite the extant literature on this issue,
it still remains a topic that is felt to require further attention. This
book aims to make a sincere contribution to this current discourse by
expounding on and organising central themes, inherent within the field
of Islamization of Human Knowledge, that were hitherto scattered. It
is, thus, the first of its kind. One significant argument of this project is
that the rise and fall of any nation is commensurate with a like rise and fall of its intellectual
development. In addition, the author has presented Islamization of Human Knowledge as a
universal and people - oriented perspective and asserted that it should not be perceived as a
mere religious and parochial discourse. Whilst a central theme of this book is on the concept
of methodology of Islamization of Human Knowledge, it does this through the intellectual
discourse of four contemporary thinkers whocould be considered to be ideologues in this field.
They are Kamal Hassan, Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, Ismail al-Farūqi, and AbduHamid
Abu Sulayman.

Despite a general world interest in the relationship between women,
peace, and Islam, few books have been dedicated to Muslim women
who aspire to change the world for the betterment of Muslim women
who organized and mobilized in the pursuit of peace. Their engagement
is persistent and profound. Most Muslim Women understand the
essence of the Islamic paradigm, the concept of tawhid, the Oneness
of God, and believe that Allah (SWT) created human beings (men and women) to worship
and serve Him as khalifahs, vicegerents of Allah (SWT). Their perspective and potential
contributions are left untapped which tantamount to silencing their voices in the pursuit of
sustained peace and prosperity. This study examines the role played by Muslim women in
promoting sustainable peace as required in Islam.

The Islamic Epistemological Worldview and Empirical Study of

Masudul Alam Choudhury
ISBN 978-967-418-411-7
Pages : 172
Price : RM 55.00 / € 20.00
Year : 2016
This research work done during the author's tenure as professorial
chair of Islamic finance in the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance,
IIUM is on the topic of a dynamic study of socioeconomic integration of
the Islamic world-system called the ummah taken in its conceptual and
empirical contexts. There is also a vast amount of policy and strategic
recommendations from the policy-theoretic applied work. The study
is different from the usual kind of writings that use sheer empirical
models and analysis to study the same topic. Such studies have
consistently missed the foundation of the epistemological worldview that is known to comprise
the totality of the world-system study. Within this domain lies the epistemological investigation
that carries the broad worldview of the values and cultural heritages that are known to colour
the total study of the world-system. From such a wide span of the epistemological meaning
arise a systemic design of the universe and men’s experience in it as the world-system of
balance.

Malay manuscripts are often said as records of intellectual and cultural
development and writing practices of Malay people. It is the product of
transmission and achievement of Malay civilization over generations.
In the past, studies on Malay manuscripts have been concentrated very
much on contents or intellectual perspectives in a manuscript but very
little on physical, cultural or writing tradition of manuscripts. A study on
the contents of a Malay manuscript would be more informative if some
information on writing and book making practices of the manuscripts
concerned are explained. This book focuses on physical or cultural perspectives in Malay
writing tradition and book making like writing material used, preparation of paper surface for
writing and its general look, Malay handwriting and its development, the Jawi script, author
and authorship etc. I hope this book will generate more interest to Malay manuscripts and
Malay writing traditions.

known as Asiatic pennywort and is known locally as pegaga. This
herb has been consumed as medicine since ancient times especially
in the Ayurverdic system of India and in folk medicine in China and

by traditional healers in herbal remedies, but its popularity is more
confined as a vegetable rather than a medicinal plant. The World
Health Organization (WHO) has documented Centella asiatica as one
of the most important medicinal plants to be conserved and cultivated. In Malay traditional
practice, Centella asiatica has been applied externally to heal wounds. It is also used or
cosmetic that can delay skin aging. Currently, pegaga is widely used in cosmetics and skin
care preparations. Previous studies on C. asiatica extracts have reported its potential as an
antioxidant, antimicrobial agent, agent of collagen synthesis and even as a wound healer.
Most studies report asiaticoside as the active constituent producing the said effect.
In this book chapter, we attempt to provide more information on its phytochemical contents,
extraction processes, antioxidant, in vitro wound healing property and medicated hydrogel
formulation based on studies done before.

It marks a return to the conception of political study organized around
key words like constitution, government, polity, politics and other
related themes. While ‘Good Governance’ agenda as introduced by
Bretton Woods’ institutions according to the Washington Consensus

In post-modern times, there has been much empirical evidence to
indicate that religions and faiths play a pro-active role in the field of civil
society but more importantly in the development of societies, which is
a major factor in political and economic development of a country,
as well as its governance. Hence, explorations of religion and faith
to develop an alternative notion of ‘good governance’ from ‘other’s’
worldview are also necessary. This book is an attempt to explore how
Islam could play its functional role to create a sustainable governance
concept based on values and ethics. It will look into the feasibility of some Islamic concepts
that relates to governance, and how it fits into the framework of the modern day notion of
‘good governance’ through the realm of citizen politics, civil societies and NGOs. Readers
will be introduced to some Islamic philosophical concepts derived from Islamic epistemology
such as Tawhid, Amanah, Islah and others that will be explained in modern framework of good
governance, to explore the viability of the relation between religion and governance.

Party Constitutions and Political Challenges in a Democracy: Nigeria
in the Fourth Republic
Aliyu Mukhtar Katsina
ISBN 978-967-418-407-0
Pages : 267
Price : RM60.00 / € 30.00
Year : 2016
Party Constitutions and Political Challenges in a Democracy: Nigeria
in the Fourth Republic is a book about political parties in Nigeria’s
Fourth Republic – their nature, character, behavior – and how they
use constitutions to set their priorities and tackle political challenges
inherent in their environment. The discourse on parties as important
democratic institutions and that of party politics as indispensable
component of electoral and representative democratic governance in
Nigeria’s Fourth Republic is intriguing. What other reason(s) exist(s)
to compel parties to adopt constitutions; how do political parties navigate their way using their
respective constitutions through the maze of challenges that exist in their environment; how
do they respond to these challenges; and how and why do their responses differ from each
other.

In this book, Aliyu Mukhtar Katsina focuses on the major political parties of Nigeria’s Fourth
Republic – their nature, character, behavior, experience, ideologies, challenges and priorities
to answer these interesting questions and to illuminate in a fascinating way how political
parties generally use their constitutions to perform functions in the political system that are
much more than mundane and normative in nature.

The book shows that party constitutions are active documents with which political parties
respond to challenges of inter-party rivalry that subsists in multi-party democracies; internal
conflict which is ever-present in complex political organizations; ideological orientation as a
means of self-differentiation in the political system; legitimating party decisions; and, of course,
party laws that require political parties to adopt constitutions as one of the pre-conditions
for registration. The book demonstrates that differences in how political parties frame their
constitutions depend on a number of variables – the interests of their founders; their electoral
successes; their respective ages; their historical experiences; and party laws that condition
their perception of their environment and the challenges intrinsic to that environment.
