2Lesson Heroes of A Neighbourhood
Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
identify physically challenged and needy people in a neighbourhood.
understand that such people need help and care.
Ram and Laxman are brothers. They are together most of
the time. They like to help needy and physically challenged
people in their neighbourhood. Their !rst duty in the morning
is to go to Pavitra’s
house. Pavitra is a
!ve years old child.
She does not have
hands by birth. She
writes with her legs.
Ram and Laxman
help her to read and
write. Pavitra is very
interested to learn.
Ram and Laxman’s
mother is the head
of the school. Pavitra
doesn’t have to pay
school fees. Ram
and Laxman take her
to school and bring her back home turn by turn. Teachers also
give her special attention. Besides studies, Pavitra is also good
at singing and dancing. Her teachers and friends encourage
her to sing and dance. Pavitra’s mother is very thankful to all of
them for helping Pavitra.
Note to the teacher: Mo!vate and encourage the students to help the needy and physically
challenged people. Make them understand the importance of right a*tude in young people.
52 Social Studies & Creative Art Book 2
Ram and Laxman along with other boys and girls in the
neighbourhood have established a library. The people have to
pay money to borrow books from the library. During Deepawali
they play deusi and bhailo to collect money. Do you know what
do they do with the money? Let’s listen what Sanuman Kaka
from the same neighbourhood has to say.
Sanuman Kaka: Right after I fell very sick. I had no money to
buy medicine. These good children let me borrow the money
from their deposit. Now, I am well. I’m very grateful to them. I
will return their money with my blessings and good wishes.
Sanuman Kaka further informs that these boys and girls have
dug wells in the neighbourhood using the money they have
collected. The children these days go to school regularly. When
there were no
wells, the children
weren’t so regular
at school. They
were absent quite
often. They had to
leave early in the
morning to fetch
water from a far off
place. By the time
they came home,
it was already 11
or 12 noon. A lot
of time was spent
in carrying water. Sometimes, even the elders missed their
works. But the situation has changed now. Everyone is much
comfortable and happy. No wonder, these children are called
the Heroes of the Neighbourhood.

something for her. There is home for elderly and
helpless people (Bridhha Ashram) nearby. There
are many similar people in that Ashram. I know
the manager. We can take her there. She will be
well taken care in that Ashram.
Rani: Thank you, father# I am very glad. Before we
take her there, let’s give her a bath, comb her
hair, and give some good food to eat and nice
clothes to wear.
Mother: Rani, I’m very proud of you. You are so kind to
others.
Old Woman: Rani, you and your parents are very kind. You

place. I can get love and care here. I’m grateful to
you all. May God bless you and your parents#
Rani: You’re my grandmother from today. I’ll come to
visit you whenever I get time.
Old Woman: Rani, my child# I consider myself very lucky to
have you as my grand-daughter. I might have
done something good in my previous life. Please
come to visit me whenever you are free.
Ma'm: Children, the helpless people who need our
help are called needy people. They are old,
blind, deaf, dumb, orphan, lame, street children
and so on. We should help them as much as we
can. Remember our little help can bring a lot of

1Lesson Working Together
Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
learn that we should help each other in our works.
understand the importance of working together,
One day the children of grade two ask their teacher to tell
them a story. The teacher is happy to tell them the story. The
story goes as follows:
A farmer had !ve sons. He loved all of them very much.
As he grew old, he started worrying about them. He thought
he would die soon or he thought he had only few days to live.
Note to the teacher: Ask children how they can help each other to do different works.
Give them a group project and an individual project. Then !nd out what bene!ts did
they enjoy while working in a group and how dif!cult it was doing it alone.
62 Social Studies & Creative Art Book 2
He asked to himself, $What will happen to my !ve sons after
my death?$ Then he called his sons, $Can you bring a bundle
of sticks?$ His sons got very surprised why he had asked it.
Anyway, they brought the bundle of sticks immediately. Once
the bundle was brought, the farmer asked each of his sons to
break it. Each one of them brought to break the bundle of sticks
but in vain. No one was break it.
Then the farmer asked
them to undo the bundle of
sticks and gave each of them
a stick to break. Each one
of them broke very easily.
The old farmer smiled at his
sons and tells to them, “My
sons, if you are together
you become strong like the
bundle of sticks. Working
together you can solve any
dif!cult problems easily.
Unity is strength. But it will be just opposite if you are alone.
So, my sons, you all must remain together and always help one
another”.
Teacher: Children, this is the end of the story. I hope you like
it. Now, can you think of things that you can do
together?
Roshan: Yes, we take turns to clean the white board. We join
hands in picking up the litters. We can make charts
and drawings to decorate our classroom together.
Farah: My brother and I do a lot of things together. We take
our dog for a walk and clean its kennel every morning.
We go to get milk and bread from the nearby shop.
We clean our rooms ourselves. We also help our
father to water the garden and "owers.

2Lesson Public Properties
Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able: to
know what things are called public properties.
understand why we need to protect them and how to do it.
Sir: Good morning, Class Two# Today, we’ll learn about public
properties. The things and places everyone can use are
called public properties. No single person owns such
properties. They belong to everyone. They are for common
use. For example, a place is where everyone can go and
visit.
Sir: Now, you all think and tell me the names of some public
properties. I’ll write down them one by one on the
whiteboard. Then we’ll learn why they are important to us
and how we can protect them.
Public Properties Why Should We Protect Them?
School We go to learn, read and write there. It’s a
place of learning, the temple of Saroswoti.
Playground We play games, sports, exercise and do a
lot of activities in playground. These are
important to remain healthy and !t.
Health Post There can’t be hospitals in every place.
Health post can give minor and emergency
treatment. We go there when we fall sick.
Note to the teacher: Explain to students the meaning and importance of public proper!es. Let
them men!on the names of public proper!es and places they have seen in their locality. Ask
them their condi!on and importance. Find what can we do to protect and preserve them?

Public Tap books, magazines, newspapers etc.
Post Of!ce
Road This is a public place where we can buy and
Public Park sell things. We buy what we need and sell
Chautara what we have more than we need.
Water is very important for us. We need
water for various purposes. There are public
taps in many places. We can drink and use
the water for various other purpose.
People send letters and parcels to their
families and friends and so do they receive
them through the post of!ce. It’s a means
of communication.
Can you imagine what would be the situation
if there were no roads. They are important
for transportation, trade and development.
We need clean and open space to walk,
play, relax and enjoy. But we can’t !nd such
places everywhere. Public parks provide us
such facilities.
Here people come to meet each other or
rest a while when they are tired.
Thank you. I’m quite impressed. Yes, these are some of the
important public properties and places. There’re many more.
I’m happy that you all know what’re the public properties and
places, and why they are so important.
It’s our duty to protect and preserve these properties. They
belong to all of us. We should help to maintain and keep them
neat, clean and in good condition. We can do so by making
proper use of and by taking well care of such properties.

Today is Saturday. Muna and Madan are excited to go to zoo
with their parents.
Muna: Father# Why are those people destroying the road?
Father: They are not destroying the road. They are rather
maintaining and repairing the road. If the road is not repaired
and maintained time to time, it will be in a bad condition. Such
a road condition can be a major cause of accidents.
Madan: Mother, look# There’re many people in the zoo. There’s
something written on the board.
Mother: A zoo is a public place. Anyone can come to the
zoo to see and enjoy the birds and animals there. Rules and
regulations and written on the board. We must follow them. It
says that visitors are not allowed to mimic and feed the animals.
If we do so they might be frightened, get sick and die. Look,
there are dustbins. We should throw the wastes into them. It
helps in keeping the zoo neat, clean and safe for the birds and
animals.
Muna: Look father# There’s a children park too with swings,
slides, see-saws etc. I think it’s for the children to enjoy them
when they are here. There’re also written some rules. According
to the rules, no one can pluck "owers and make the area dirty.
Note to the teacher: The lesson is just an example. Give as many examples as you can. Let
the children think and discuss the ways and means as to how the public proper!es and places
can be protected and preserved.

strictly prohibited.
It says slides and swings are only for the children.
Father: Children Park is for small children to play and enjoy.
The facilities such as swings and slides are only for children.
They’re not for adults. If misused, they get broken or damaged
soon. It costs a lot of money to set them up. We shouldn’t
pluck "owers. They are the ornaments of the park. They make
the park look attractive, fresh and beautiful. Look# There’s a
water tap too.
Muna: Father, there’s also written something. It says not to
waste water, wash clothes, take bath and to leave the tap open
after use. Why is it written like that?
Father: You know this park is a part of the zoo and this water tap
is only for the visitors. It’s only for drinking. This is not a place
for washing and bathing. Everything has its speci!c purpose.

At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
learn about the rules and regulations related to public properties.
follow the public rules and regulations while using public properties.
One day, Janaki and her father went to a public telephone
booth to call their grandparents in the village. She found people
standing in a queue. She was anxious to call grandparents and
wanted to be the !rst caller. She bypassed the people already
lining up and went in the front. The people started complaining
and making noise. It was dif!cult to talk and hear on the phone.
Then her father quietly told to her, “The telephone booth is a
public property. Everyone has equal right over it. One must stand
in a queue and wait for their turn to use it.” Janaki realized her
mistake. She apologized for it and stood in the queue waiting
for her turn. All the people appreciated her gesture.
On another day, Janaki and her parents were going to visit their
grandparents in the village. She went to the bus stand with her
father. She asked her father, “Why do they need bus tickets?”
Her father told her, “Bus is also a public property. We must take
care of it. We must buy a ticket to reserve a seat. Riding a bus
without a ticket is a crime. Not only while buying tickets but also
while getting into the bus and coming out of it, we have to be
on line and wait for our turn. Everybody can’t do it at the same
time. Pushing, pulling and crowding are uncivilized manners.
They may create chaos, confusion and stampede. Bus-park is
also a public place. We shouldn’t make it dirty.”
Note to the teacher: Mo!vate students to follow rules and regula!ons while using public
proper!es. Explain to them that these rules and regula!ons are for our own welfare and bene%ts.
Let them discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of following and not following the
public rules and regula!ons.

cross the road. Meanwhile a policeman came and asked the
people to cross the road only from the zebra crossing. Janaki
asked the policeman, “Why should we cross from the zebra
crossing only? What happens if the traf!c rules aren’t followed?”
The policeman told her that the road is a public property. It’s
for every body’s use. If we don’t follow the traf!c rules, there
will be chaos, confusions, jams and even accidents. People may
lost their lives and properties.”
It has been a very fruitful day for Janaki. She’s very happy to be

1Lesson Different Landforms
Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
identify different types of landforms .
tell the names of different types landforms.
The country is our home. It’s land form can be divided into
different kinds. They are plains, hills and mountains.
Plain: The landform, which is low and "at is called plain. In our
country, we are call it ‘Terai’. It’s usually hot and humid. People
wear thin cotton clothes. The land is quite fertile. The land is
suitable for growing paddy, corn, wheat, sugarcane, jute, cotton,
vegetables and fruits. People rear animals like cows, buffaloes,
goats, chickens, and do !sh farming as well. People catch !shes
in rivers and lakes too. There is little scarcity of water. It can be
obtained from rivers, lakes, ponds and wells. As the land is "at,
it’s easy to move from one place to another. Various means of
transportation like train, bus, tanga, rickshaw, and bullock cart
are found there. As the land is more fertile and life is relatively
more comfortable, many people like to live in the plain.
Note to the teacher: Use maps, pictures and drawings if necessary to make students
understand the di"erent types of land. Ask students where they come from and to share their
experiences of the landform they live in.
80 Social Studies & Creative Art Book 2
Hill: Thelandform,whichishighand
sloppy is called hill. It’s not so hot
and not so cold in the hilly region.
It has temperate climate. Hills are
usually covered with forests. People
grow maize, millet, barley, potato,
fruits and vegetables, and keep
sheep, goats and cattle. Farming
in hills is done by cutting slopes,
which is called terrace farming. Life
is comparatively dif!cult in hills. It’s
not so easy to cultivate crops, build
roads and carry out development works. Roads are normally
steep and narrow. People use horse, donkey and mules to carry
goods. There are low lying areas at the foothills called Bensi. In
some places, there are deep and narrow spaces between two
hills called gorge. Rivers and streams "ow between the hills. On
some slopes, there are small "at lands called Tars. Bensi and
Tar are quite fertile and suitable for farming.
Mountain: The landform which is very high and steep is called
mountain. It is very cold, dry, and
windy most of the time. There’s
very little rain or no rain fall at
all. Snow-fall on mountains is
quite regular. Life in mountain
is very hard and dif!cult. It’s
thinly populated. Very few
people live in mountain. People
have to wear thick and warm
clothes. The land is not good
for farming. People rear animals like yak and sheep. They make
cheese and ghee from yak’s milk and carpets from the wool of
sheep. They grow potatoes and fruits like apples and apricot.

2Lesson A Place To Live
Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

name the things they see around.
My name is Mingma. My house is on the slope of a hill. It is a
beautiful place. There are other big and small hills around my
village. They are covered with forests. The people of my village
go to forest to collect !rewood and fodders. There’s a stream
nearby. We get drinking water from a stone tap ‘Dhunge-
Dhara’. There’re few houses in my villlage. During my holidays
me and my father take our cows and buffaloes for grazing.
The road is steep, zigzag and narrow. We need to walk very
carefully during wet months. My school is on the opposite side
of my house. It is also on the slope of a hill. The road to school
is steep and dif!cult. I have to go up and down to reach my
school. I often get tired. But I can’t miss school. Some children
do not go to school. Their parents are poor so they can’t send
them to school. But I’m lucky in that way. There is a beautiful
river near my house. It makes pleasant sound. Me and my
friends love to watch the river "owing. We wonder where this
river comes from and where it goes. There is a suspension
bridge (Jholunge-Pul) over this river. It’s really a fun to walk on
this bridge. It swings left and right when we walk on. There’re
so many things to enjoy in my village. But the most beautiful
thing is the sun rising and setting from or behind the hill.
Note to the teacher: Let students know the types of landforms. Ask them to discuss
how landforms in"uence the climate, natural vegetation, crops and the people’s way

hot. I can see houses, people, animals, and their movements
and activities till the far end of the !eld. When the paddy is
ripe, the entire !eld looks yellowish like a golden plate. During
harvesting time, we all go to the !eld in bullock carts. There is a
pond with a peepal and a banyan tree near my house. We take
our cows and buffaloes to the pond to drink water. We often
take a rest under the shade of the peepal and banyan trees.
There are !shes in the pond. Every Saturday me and my friends
go to the pond for !shing. There is no problem of drinking
water. Every house has tube well. Though roads are not properly
constructed we don't have dif!culty in travelling. We can move
around the village easily. My school is quite far. I go to school
by rickshaw or tanga. Riding rickshaw or a tanga is really a great
fun. We can hardly see any hills in the plain. There are some very
thick forests where there are lots of wild animals. I enjoy living
in my village.

There are many houses, some of them are big while some
are small. People of my village have planted many trees.
They have even painted their houses green. My village
really looks different from other villages. That’s why it is
called a ‘Green Village’.
My school is in the middle of the village. There is a big
playground. There are a lot of "owering plants around
our school. There is a health post, a post of!ce, a bank
and some shops near my school.
My house is not very far from school. I walk to school. It
takes only a few minutes for me to reach my school. There
is paddy !eld around my house. There is also a pasture
land. Cows and buffaloes are taken there for grazing. There
are temples, chautaras and water taps in our village.
A small river "ow between the hills. There is a suspension

At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

talk about their past and present situation.
Sugam: Father# This is my friend, Safal. He has come to
Kathmandu after appearing his SLC examination.. He lives in
Taplejung with his grandparents, parents, uncle, and aunt. I
met him when I used to go there to my mamaghar. We have
been in touch since then. He is one of my friends from there.
His parents are farmers. They used to give me home made curd
with fresh beaten rice and fresh oranges from their garden when
I visited them. His grandmother and mother weave colourful
blankets and carpets. There was no proper road at that time
to reach there. I still remember how we had to walk up and
down the hill for hours. There was no electricity. People used

to cook with !rewood and light
their house with kerosene lamp.
But, according to my friend, lot
changes have taken place over
the years. There is electricity and
most of the houses use biogas to
cook food. Hand looms and Dhiki–
Janto are being slowly replaced by
small machines. Cash crops such
as cardamom, tea, umliso
and so on are replacing
the traditional farming.
There’s a gravelled/black
tarred road and an airport.
We can go there either by
bus or by plane. Lots of
things have changed in
short period of time.
Safal: It has been a long time that you have not come to
Taplejung. Hope you will come some day.
Sugam: I met your uncle and aunt in Kathmandu a few days
ago. They have got good jobs. Your aunt is a teacher, isn’t she?.
The radi, pakhi, blanket and carpet woven by your grandmother
and mother are getting good price in Kathmandu. You said
your parents are engaged in cardamom (alaichi) and ginger
farming, aren’t they? I’m very happy to see your days getting
better and better. I suggest you Safal to stay with your uncle
and aunt and study in Kathmandu.
Safal: Sugam, I’m indeed very happy that you are so concerned
about me and my family. You know our past and present as
well, don’t you?
Sugam: Of course I do. True friendship never ends#
