DURING THE PAST 30 YEARS, the Coffees of Maxwell
House have been privileged to sponsor the distri-
bution of many millions of Passover Haggadahs.

This year the Maxwell House Haggadah has been com-
pletely redesigned for improved readability, and for under-
standing and deeper appreciation of every one at the Seder
table.

This Haggadah is complete. There are no deletions from
the traditional version, in either Hebrew or English. The
Hebrew and English texts are printed in parallel columns.
Included this year are trans-literations of prayers and
points that should be said in Hebrew —easy for all to follow
and enjoy.

Acknowledgement is gratefully given to the Orthodox
Rabbis and scholars who have worked so many hours on this
book. Particular appreciation is expressed to Rabbi Hersch
Kohn and to his associate Rabbi Bernard Levy, for their
generous contributions. Rabbi Kohn has, of course, always
supervised preparation of the Maxwell House Haggadah,
and has supervised and certified Maxwell House Coffee,
Sanka Coffee and Yuban Coffee for Passover for many,
many years.

he Seder Plate Is placed on the table in front of the leader. A spe-
cial Seder Plate or a regular large platter may be used. Shown above is a
traditional assembly for the Seder Plate which includes the following:

1. Roasted Shankbone of Lamb. 2. Hard boiled Egg. 3. Bitter Herbs
cut into small pieces, or use grated fresh horse radish. 4. Charoses. A mix-
ture of finely chopped apples, nuts and cinnamon mixed with a little wine.
5. Karpas. Either parsley, celery, lettuce, onion or potatoes may be used.

OTHER ITEMS ON YOUR SEDER TABLE
Three Matzohs: Place them separately in Matzoh covers, or fold them
separately in one or two large napkins.
Wine Place a wine goblet or glass in front of each setting, and a filled wine
decanter near the center of the table.
Salt Water: All celebrants will use salt water and a dish of it should be
easily available to all at the table. Use more than one dish if desired.
Cup of Elijah: Use a large goblet, filled with wine and placed near the center
of the table.
Pillow: Put a pillow or cushion on the left arm of the leader's chair or on
another chair close to it.

He asks: "What mean you by this ‫־ ד‬:‫ד‬ ‫ד‬ ‫דד ד‬
service?" By the word "you", it is
clear he doth not include himself, and ‫ ולפי‬.‫ לבם ולא לו‬:‫הזאת לבם‬
thus hath withdrawn himself from the •: :‫דד‬ ‫דד‬
community; it is therefore proper to
retort upon him by saying: "This is ‫שהוציא את־ע^מו מן ה?לל בפר‬
done, because of what the Eternal did
for me, when I went forth from ‫ לאף אתה הקהה את־ישניו‬.‫בעקר‬
Egypt;" for me and not for him; for
had he been there, he would not have ‫ואמר־לו בעבור זה עשה יי לי‬

•n What says the simple son? He .‫תם דמה הוא אומר ־מה זאת‬
asks: "What is this?" Then thou shalt
tell him: With a mighty hand did the ‫ואמרת אליו בחזק יד הוציאנו יי‬
Eternal bring us forth from Egypt, ‫ד‬: ‫• דו‬ ‫ וד י ד‬: ‫ ד •״ ד‬: ‫ ד ־‬:
from the house of bondage.

irNuri But as for him who hath no ‫ושאינו יודע ל ל א י ל א ה פ ת ח‬
capacity to inquire thou must begin the
narration as it is said: " A n d thou shalt ‫ לנאמר ןהגךת לבלף ביום‬. ‫א‬
relate to thy son on that day, this is
done because of what the Eternal did ;‫ה ה ו א ל א מ ר ב ק ב ו ר ז ה ע ש ה י‬
for me, when I went forth from Egypt."

One might possibly think, the narra-
tion was to be given from the first day of the ‫ ״‬1‫ ד‬: :
month Nissan, therefore it is said, on that day.
Yet, as it is said on that day, it might be ‫ תלמוד לומר‬.‫;כול מראש חךש‬
inferred that only day-time was meant. But
the scripture says on account of this: from ‫ אי ביום ה ה ו א ; כ ו ל מבעוד‬.‫ביום ההוא‬
which is to be inferred, that the narration is to
be made only at a time when the unleavened ‫ ב ע ב ו ר‬.‫ תלמוד לומר ב ע ב ו ר זה‬.‫יום‬
bread and bitter herbs are placed before thee.

gers in a land that is not theirs and

has been the support o f our ancestors
and of ourselves, for not one only has ‫א ח ד ב ל ב ד ע מ ד עלינו‬ ‫שלא‬
risen up against us, but in every gen- ‫ד‬
eration some have arisen against us to ‫ד ־ ד •*ו‬ ‫ד‬: * ‫דד‬
annihilate us, but the M o s t H o l y ,

for thy servants have no pasture for
their flocks; for the famine is in the ‫ שנאמר ויאמרו‬.‫א ל א לגור שם‬
land of Canaan: now, we pray thee, let : ‫ ־‬-‫ד‬:‫ד ד‬ ‫ד‬ ‫דד ד‬
thy servants dwell in the land of
Goshen." W i t h but a few persons: as -‫א ל ־ פ ר ע ה לגור ב א ר ץ באנו בי‬
it is said: " W i t h three score and ten ‫ד דוד י דן‬ ‫ד‬ :‫־‬-
souls thy ancestors went down to
Egypt; and now the Eternal, thy God ‫אין מ ר ק ה ל צ א ן א ל ד ל ק ב ד י ך‬
hath made thee as the Stars o f heaven
for multitude." And he there became a ‫בי ב ב ד ה ר ע ב ב א ר ץ כנען ועתה‬
nation: by which we are taught that ‫ ־ ד‬: ‫ דן ־ י‬: ‫ דוד י‬: ‫ד ״ ד ד ד‬
the children of Israel were distinguished
even in Egypt. Great and mighty: as ‫ ב מ ת י‬:‫ישבו־נא ע ב ד י ך ב א ר ץ גלן‬
it is said: " A n d the children of Israel
were fruitful increased abundantly, ‫ במה שנאמר בשבעים נפש‬.‫מעט‬
multiplied, and became exceedingly ‫ ״ דוד‬: • : ‫ ד ־‬: ‫ ד ד ד‬: ‫ ד‬:
mighty, and the land was filled w i t h
them." A n d numerous: as it is said: ‫;דדו אבתיך מצרימה לעתה ל מ ך‬
" I have caused thee to multiply like

with them; lest they should multiply,

should happen, they might join our
enemies, fight against us and depart ‫לרבה מדה כי־תקראנה מלחמה‬
from the land. And they afflicted us:
as it is said, and they set taskmasters ‫ונוסף גפ־הוא על־שנאינו ונלחם־־‬
over them, to afflict them with their
burdens, and they built stone cities for ‫ כמה‬.‫ ויענונו‬:‫בנו ועלה מו־הארץ‬
Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses. And
they laid heavy bondage upon us: as it 7: ‫ ו‬- : ‫• י ז־ ד ו ד י ־‬ 7 7: ‫דן‬
is said, and the Egyptians compelled
the children of Israel to labour with ‫'שנאמר וישימו עליו שרי מסים‬
rigour.

nal, the God of our fathers, and the ‫מסכנות לפךעה את־פתם ואת־‬
Eternal heard our voice, saw our afflic-

And we cried unto the Eter- ‫כמה שנאמר ולאבדו מצרים את־‬
nal, the God of our fathers: as it is
said, and it came to pass, after some :‫בני ישראל בפרך‬

the children of Israel sighed in conse-
quence of the bondage, and they cried, ‫ונצעק אל־־יל אלהי אבתינו‬
and their complaint went up to God,

Eternal heard our voice: as it is said,
God heard their groaning, and God :‫ענינו ואת־עמלנו ואת־לחצנו‬

ham, Isaac and with Jacob. And He

Israel, and God had knowledge of their ‫את־בני ישראל וידע‬ ‫אלהים‬
affliction. And our sorrow: this de- ‫ ד ״ —ז־־‬: ‫ ״ י‬:
notes the destruction of the male
children, as it is said, Every son that .‫ אלו הבנים‬.‫ ואת־עמלנו‬:‫אלהים‬
is born ye shall cast into the river, and • ‫ ד‬- ‫ו‬- ‫־־ ד ״ו‬: ‫ ד‬: ‫• ״‬::
every daughter ye shall save alive. A n d
our oppression: this denotes the sever- ‫קמה לנאמר בל־הבן הילוד‬
ity employed, as it is said, And I have
also seen the oppression wherewith the ‫ובל־הבת‬ ‫תשליכהו‬ ‫היארה‬
Egyptians oppress them. ‫ד‬: ‫••ו‬. • ; ‫־־‬ ‫ ו ד‬:‫־‬

w c r m A n d the Eternal brought us . ‫ זה ה ך ח ק‬.‫ לאת־לךןצנו‬:‫קחיון‬
forth from Egypt, with a strong hand
and with an outstretched arm, with - ‫במה שנאמר וגמ־ראיתי א ת‬
great terror, and w i t h signs and -‫ד •ו‬ --.-:‫דד‬ ‫ד‬:
wonders.
:‫אתם‬ ‫לחצים‬ ‫אשר מצרים‬ 1‫ץ‬ ‫הלח‬

angel, nor by means of a Seraph, nor

H o l y , blessed be H e , in His own glory,

camels, upon the oxen, and upon the ‫אשר בשלה בסוסים בסמדים‬
sheep; a very grievous pestilence. A n d
with an outstretched arm: this refers to ‫בןמלים ב ק ק ר ובצאן ד ק ר ב ב ד‬
the sword, as it is said, A n d a drawn
sword in His hand stretched out over . ‫ זו ה ח ר ב‬. ‫ ו ב ץ ך ע נ ט ר ה‬: ‫מ א ד‬
Jerusalem. A n d w i t h great terror: this
refers to the appearance o f the Divine ‫ב מ ה לנאמר לחךבו ל א פ ה ק;דו‬
Presence, as it is said, O r hath G o d
tried to go and take unto him a nation .‫ ו ב מ ר א גדל‬: ‫נטויה ע ל ־ י ר ו ש ל ם‬
from the midst of another nation, by
trials, by signs, and by wonders, and ‫ ד ז־‬: ‫ ז זו׳‬: *‫ ד ־‬:
by war, and a strong hand; by an
outstretched arm and great terrors, ‫ ק מ ה ל נ א מ ר א ו‬. ‫זו גלוי ל ב י נ ה‬
according to all that the Eternal, your
God did for you in Egypt. And with ‫ה נ ס ה א ל ה י ם ל ב ו א ל ק ח ת א גוי‬
signs, this refers to the rod w i t h which

The festive meal

After supper the half of the middle matzah which had been put aside at the commencement
of the service is distributed amongst all present. This is called the "Ajikomen" after which no

food must be taken during the evening.

Thou didst visit his (Abraham's) door -‫־ *ו‬ ‫!* ־‬:!‫! * * * ־‬
during the heat of the day at the Passover.
:‫בפסח‬ ‫ת‬1‫ת מצ‬1‫הסעיר נוצצים עג‬
He entertained the angels with unleavened
cakes at the Passover. :‫ר ערך פסח‬1‫ואל ה ב ק ר ךץ זכר לש‬
:‫ואמךתם זבח פסח‬
T o the herd he ran and prepared a calf,
a prototype of the sacrifice of the Passover. :‫זעמו סדומים ולהטו באש פסח‬

And ye shall say it is the sacrifice of the :‫ט מהם ומצות אפה בקץ פסח‬1‫חלץ ל‬
Passover. ‫ף ונוף ב ע ב ך ך‬1‫טאטאת אךמת מ‬

The Sodomites provoked God, and were :‫בפסח‬
consumed with fire at the Passover. :‫ואמךתם זבח פסח‬

Lot was delivered from them and he baked ‫ןה לאש כ ל און מחצת בליל שמור‬
unleavened cakes at the Passover.

Thou didst sweep the land of Moph and :‫כביר על בן בכור פסחת בךם פסח‬
Noph when Thou didst pass through it at the
Passover. :‫לבלתי תת משחית לבא בפתחי בפסח‬

And ye shall say this is the sacrifice of the :‫ואמרתם זבח פסח‬
Passover.

Yet didst thou, O Omnipotent! pass over
thy first-born (Israel) marked with the blood
of the sacrifice of the Passover.

Not suffering the destroyer to enter within
my doors, at the Passover.

And ye shall say this is the sacrifice of the
Passover.

The strongly besieged city (Jericho), was
surrendered at the Passover.

Midian was destroyed bv the cake of
barley bread, like the offering of an Omer,
at the Passover.
