Q&A with Michael Carstedt, General Manager of The Stella Hotel & Ballroom Q. Can you describe what a night stay at the Stella is like? A. A night spent at the Stella is like taking a step back in time with the building’s rich history, coupled with an up-to-date modern twist offering first class service, made from scratch food options, and an endless craft cocktail list. Built in 1917, on the land where the Petit Malt House used to stand, The Stella was formally the Kenosha Elk’s Club which featured a swimming pool, numerous dining facilities, and even a hotel. Throughout the years the club hosted numerous special guests including Mel Tormé and Colonel Sanders. Later it would become the Heritage Club and, in the summer of 2019, The Stella Hotel. Historically it has been such a significant gathering place for the community and our goal is to carry on that tradition. Q. The Stella has one of if not the best rooftop bars (the Crows Nest) in the area, what goes into making it the place to be in the summer? A. A good time always starts with great company, creative drink selection, modest but savory food options, sunshine, and a Margaritaville-like vibe. All you have to do is show up and we’ll provide the rest. Q. What would you say is your signature drink/meal at the 1844 Table & Mash? A. With so many great featured items on our new menu it’s hard to choose just one- My personal favorite would be the Espresso martini (no Baileys), Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls, and our Maple Bourbon Bacon BBQ Rack of Ribs. A close second is the Brandy Old Fashioned, beer nuggets, and Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. Q. What does the Stella have planned for the summer? A. We just rolled out a brand-new seasonal craft cocktail list and a completely revamped, made from scratch food menu offering authentic rustic fare in all 3 of our onsite dining options; 1844 Table & Mash, our rooftop bar The Crow’s Nest, and the Stella Café . The Crows Nest will be the place to be this summer with thirst quenching drinks, entertainment, and spectacular views. The Stella Hotel & Ballroom 5706 Eighth Avenue stellahotel.com

Q. How did Swede’s get started in 2017 and what made you want to get into the bar business with your family? A. It’s something we had talked about with my nephews Frank and Jonathon, the opportunity came up and we went with it. The up north vibe is all Jonathon’s doing, and also his dad, Jon’s. They have a great looking boathouse up north with that same vibe so that’s how that look came about. Jonathon is very good at decorating and is always adding new things. We chose the name Swede’s in honor of my nephews’ Uncle Eric Olson who they and my husband were very close with. Some people referred to Eric as the Big Swede so we decided what better then to name our bar Swedes. Eric was a great guy! Q. Swede’s is family owned and operated business, how is it working so close to family? A. It’s been great working with Jonathon and Frank, we receive so much support from our families and occasionally you will find a family member working behind the bar. We all get along great and have a lot of fun. Q. Swede’s is known for their Old Fashioned, what’s the secret? A. Before we opened we all sat down and came up with our way of making an Old Fashioned, after all this is Wisconsin! It turned out to be our most popular drink. Q. What makes Swede’s stand out from other bars in the area? A. I wouldn’t say Swedes stands out, we blend in nicely with all the others here in the downtown. We all have something a little different to offer which makes it nice. Q. What do you love about owning a business in beautiful Downtown Kenosha? A. I love being able to see our beautiful lake Michigan when I come to work. It’s a great place where there is always a lot of fun things going on. I’ve gotten to meet and make friends with a lot of great people. Q. Swede’s is also know for their cribbage leagues, how can people get involved? A. Our Cribbage league runs from fall through the winter, we just ended our last session. I will be doing some tournaments this summer. Follow us on Instagram and facebook because that is where I will post the dates. Whenever you want to play, come see me! Q. What is your favorite drink at Swede’s? A. Our Old Fashioned or Bloody Mary! Q. What can someone expect when they come to Swede’s for the first time or as a regular. A. You can expect to see peanuts on the bar and a friendly bartender! “Id like to give a shout out to my great bartenders, they make running Swedes a lot easier for me!” Swede’s 510 56th St swedeskenosha.com Q&A with Joan of Swede’s

Q. What is hot yoga, and how hot is it? A. Yoga in the Heat! We offer a few classes that are unheated but depending on the class the temperature will range from 90 to 105 degrees with added humidity. Our signature class is Hot26. This is done at 105 degrees with 40%humidity. We control our heating and humidification system every class. We also have an air filtration ventilation system, and antimicrobial anti slip flooring that is specially made to cushion the pressure involved in strenuous yoga poses! Q. Jenna, you were the first hot yoga studio in this area when you started, what made you want to open up in downtown Kenosha? A. I wanted to provide the benefits of hot yoga and heated strength training to this amazing community. The benefits of the practice we provide are life changing. We were the first hot yoga studio to open between the Chicago and Milwaukee area. Unsure of how receptive the practice would be, I took a risk to bring it to the community I reside in. Equinox has been a downtown favorite for over 20 years. For years, their focus was on self-care, personal health, and wellness with organic massage, holistic facials, and products to support one’s overall well-being. In the past recent years, founder and owner Maria Caravati has evolved the business to a different form of self-care - horticultural therapy. For many of us, the experience of interacting with indoor plants and container gardening can provide a rejuvenating experience for many. Stop in to Equinox today and just breathe in the photosynthesis in the area and take home a little green friend, a bottle of wine, or other great gifts. w/Dave & Dino of Champions Sports Bar 719 50th St Open daily at 6am How long have you been bartending? Dave: Total 12 years, 10 here at Champions. Dino: Bartending 46 years, owned one for 8 in the 90s. Who inspired you to be a bartender? Dave: Long time bartender Art Berger. Dino: Lenny Chiapetta, who owned Lenny’s Club on 22nd Ave and 53rd Street. He was there for 36 years, had me working when I was 10 waiting on the card players. What do you love about bartending? Dave: I love meeting new people and seeing friends every day at the bar. Dino: I love bartending because I like being around people. I enjoy the conversations and the banter. What do you love about Downtown Kenosha? Dave: I love the music on summer nights and the proximity to the lake, plus all the restaurants and bars. Dino: Downtown has grown so much! The city has done a great job with the entertainment and events. I love the lake - it is my favorite place to be. What is your favorite cocktail to make? Dave: My favorite is a Bloody Mary. Many other bartenders tend to dislike making them, but I take great pride in the ones I make. Dino: As a day bartender, I don’t make many cocktails, but they say I make a real good Bloody Mary and I used to enjoy making martinis. Best advice you received while behind the bar? Dave: Leave your problems at the door. Dino: Be nice, have fun, have a thick skin. But don’t let anyone get out of hand or disrespect you. What is different about a 6am Champions crowd? Dave: The 6am Champions crowd is a bunch of third shifters or retirees who like to have a couple early. Most have known each other for years and get along very well. New customers are finding out we are open this early every week - and we welcome them! Dino: Most of the customers are the old third shifters, day drinkers who have a great time. They have followed me throughout the years. We get new people every week and we welcome them. We all get along. Tip Your Bartenders!

Our Story by James & Tina of Millie Bo Peep “We both were born and raised in Kenosha and have a true love and passion for our city and the downtown/lakefront area. Our fondest memories from our childhood are from downtown, but it looked very different 20-30 years ago. The two of us met in high school at Bradford (go Red Devils!) and we've been best friends ever since. When we were pregnant with our first daughter, Millie, we had a hard time finding trendy, sustainably made products. All of the products we really wanted we could only find online or would have to travel 50+ miles to find. After talking with other local moms, parents, and grandparents in the area we realized how many other people had felt the same way. When coming up with a name for our business, we wanted to incorporate our daughter, Millie, in the name. After all, she has been the biggest inspiration for us! We tied in the nursery rhyme, Little Bo Peep, and it just fit. We made a list of possible names as we were planning things and we just kept circling back to Millie Bo Peep. Mille Bo Pepp is your one-stop shop for everything baby and toddler, and we even carry clothing up to size 10! We've carefully selected thoughtful gifts and provide maternity and postpartum care. We offer so much more than just children’s clothing including: Montessori style toys, puzzles, stuffed animals, bath toys, teethers, bibs, burp cloths, a ton of baby care items, maternity and postpartum essentials for moms, mom and dad matching outfits, books, cards, and a ton of other gift items! Owning a business with your significant other is definitely both rewarding and challenging. We honestly thought it would be harder than it has been so far, but we've learned that we complement each other in many ways. We've learned to approach things with a higher level of patience, love, and understanding which helps. “ 5720 Sixth Ave milliebopeep.com Open Wednesdays - Sundays “The lakefront will always feel like home, and since becoming Downtown Kenosha business owners, the sense of community has blown us away!”
