Open that sail and embrace the high seas this summer! By Meryl Strichartz We are celebrating our 15 year anniversary this summer and offer duck pedal boats, single, tandem and fishing kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and are eagerly awaiting water tricycles. For youths ages 7-12 we offer our new “S’mores: Youth Sailing & More” program which are weekly, day-long camps that teach sailing in the harbor and so much more. We will be taking them kayaking, paddleboarding, playing games on the beach, and doing arts and crafts and STEM lessons. This new program is really designed to get kids having fun on the water. For teens, we have sailing courses in the afternoons including a course for Boy Scouts so they can earn their sailing badges. For adults, we offer introductory and intermediate evening sailing courses. And we also have a women’s only course, family sailing, private lessons and racing workshops. In addition to all of our new course offerings, the sailing center is working with many new corporate sponsors to do two large scale community outreach/fundraisers. The first is a Venetian Night with Great Lakes Yacht Sales in July and the second is a Pirate Party in August with Lakeshore Pedal Tours and Salon on Sixth. You do not need to be experienced at all to learn how to sail. Our purpose is to teach and transmit our love of sailing to others. We live on the shores of Lake Michigan and everyone should be connected to the water. We are lucky to have so much of it! Sailing is special because one becomes so in tune with the wind and the water. It’s active and peaceful at once! We encourage people to dress appropriate to the weather, so use sunscreen, bring a hat, water, and sunglasses. We have life jackets and will teach people how to wear them properly. CBG has also been found to have sedative properties. In conclusion, CBN and CBG are two cannabinoids that have a variety of potential benefits. While more research is needed to fully understand their effects, early studies suggest that they could be useful in treating conditions such as pain, inflammation, bacterial infections, neurodegenerative diseases, and sleep disorders. Plenty of Free Parking in Downtown Kenosha By Kris Kochman, City of Kenosha Community Relations Liaison Downtown Kenosha offers a smorgasbord of entertainment, dining and shopping options. Browse through a boutique, visit a gallery, maybe stop for a latte or a sweet snack at a cafe. Dozens of restaurants, performance spaces, breweries and pubs can be found throughout the district, which is bordered by Sheridan Road to the west, the harbor and lakefront to the east; 48th Street to the north and 60th Street to the south. The area is home to five museums, including the Smithsonian affiliated Kenosha Public Museum, Civil War Museum and Dinosaur Discovery Museum. Colorful flower baskets brighten the heart of downtown during the warmer months, when people flock to the area to enjoy outdoor festivals, concerts, car shows and art fairs. Look for cheerfully decorated storefronts and lighted lamp posts during the winter months. One thing you won’t see in downtown Kenosha: parking meters. There are nearly 4,000 free public parking spots available downtown, including street parking and surface lots. Simmons Island near downtown includes 288 parking stalls. Please note the posted signs for hours and restrictions. A new public parking ramp opened in 2021 in downtown Kenosha. The ramp, operated by the City’s Kenosha Transit Division, is located at Eighth Avenue between 56th Street and 57th Street, near Scoop’s Ice Cream store and The Stella Hotel. The ramp includes parking spots for 354 vehicles (six accessible stalls, two accessible van stalls and 346 typical parking stalls) in addition to six dedicated motorcycle stalls. The entrance is along Eighth Avenue. Parking within the parking structure is free. No overnight parking is allowed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. Automatic gates are activated as vehicles enter or exit the garage to provide access control for vehicles entering and exiting the parking structure, as well as pedestrian safety. Additional parking near downtown may be found west of Sheridan road at the Metra Commuter lot at 54th Street & 13th Avenue. Cost is $5 per day (a day’s pass expires at midnight). Enjoy your next visit to Downtown Kenosha, with some extra dollars left in your pocket thanks to the plentiful free parking. Meet your Lakeshore Business Improvement District Board Members Meet your Lakeshore Business Improvement District Board Members Meet your Lakeshore Business Improvement District Board Members The Kenosha Lakeshore BID was created by the City of Kenosha in 1986 to allow businesses to develop, manage and promote Downtown Kenosha and to establish an assessment method to fund permitted activities. The BID Board meets each month, on the third Tuesday at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Downtown Kenosha at 8:30am. Meetings are open to the public. Augustus “Gus” Harris opened his business, Flex & Burn Fitness, 12 years ago and moved downtown in 2013. Brett Bjorn is the second-generation owner of Mike Bjorn’s Clothing, which established itself in Downtown Kensoha in 1981. Q. What do you love about being a business owner in Downtown Kenosha? GUS HARRIS of FLEX & BURN FITNESS: Running and owning a business downtown is an integral part of giving back and supporting growth and development in Kenosha. I'm able to offer services to a vast array of individuals who are, and have been life long residents. Owning a business requires immense sacrifices and perseverance. I have total respect and admiration for anyone pursuing such venture particularly under extenuating circumstances. It requires passion that's selfless for the most part. BRETT BJORN of MIKE BJORN’S CLOTHING: I love the downtown vibe. It's a completely different feel from anywhere else in the city. Downtown businesses seem to work together more. We're also very lucky to be located on a beautiful lake. Why did you chose Downtown Kenosha for your business? GUS: I observed lots of businesses were preferring other locations in Kenosha. I wanted to operate and succeed downtown to show that it could be done. If we as Kenoshans don't push to improve downtown, why should we expect others to do it for us? BRETT: My dad was the one that made that decision decades ago and I'm so happy he did. Why did you decide to join the BID board? GUS: I have unique experiences, knowledge, education and background I bring to BID. As Naturalized citizen, I have a different perspective and appreciation for the opportunities afforded me. Hence it's a natural progression for me to give back. Also, I'm a pretty cool dude and work very well with people from all backgrounds. BRETT: I decided to join BID to help try and make a difference in our downtown business community. I really feel BID is doing alot of positives and we have alot of improvements on the way. What are some of the goals you would like to see get done during your term on the BID board? GUS: Obviously, I'd like to see continuous improvements, learning and growing from past mistakes, Offer incentives, and support to existing and prospective businesses downtown. Improve business relationships, communication, recognition, rewards, networking, encouraging and mentoring small businesses. Also help make Downtown a safe and family destination point for all. BRETT: I'm a strong believer in great lighting improving the aesthetics of the downtown and making it an even more welcoming environment during holidays and even year round. I also want to see more holiday decorations as I feel the public will appreciate it.
