Pollen in the Skies, Allergies in our Eyes Ahh spring – the sunshine, the fresh air, the smell of rain-soaked soil… and the miserable, seemingly never-ending agony of not being able to breathe or stop sneezing. Add in some watery eyes and pressure headaches, and you know allergy season is in full swing! When such a beautiful time of year becomes unbearable due to high pollen counts, it can really put a damper on any sort of spring cleaning or yard work that needs to be done. Even taking a walk outside can be nearly impossible when it’s allergy season. Luckily for us all, nature provides some wonderful and natural antihistamines to help provide some allergy relief. An antihistamine works by reducing the amount of histamine (your body’s natural defense to an allergen) in your system. When looking for an allergy relief supplement, the following have been shown to be helpful for most people. Of the natural antihistamines, Vitamin C is one of the most powerful and easiest to come by. Along with being effective and easily obtained, Vitamin C is relatively safe with most people being able to take up to 2,000 mg a day safely. Stinging Nettle is an herbal remedy that has been used for centuries. Along with reducing histamine in the system, it also has anti-inflammatory properties that can greatly relieve the symptoms associated with an allergy flare-up. Quercetin is a flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables. Not only is quercetin an antihistamine, but it also has anti-inflammatory benefits and can help boost the immune system. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) can help reduce allergy symptoms such as sneezing and congestion. Working as an expectorant, NAC can also help break up and expel mucus from the airways and sinuses. If you have seasonal allergies, I suggest taking a supplemental remedy throughout the season to ensure you can enjoy the beautiful spring weather. One of the above options, or a blend of them all such as Aller-Aid by Oregon’s Wild Harvest, can really quell or eliminate most allergy symptoms. I started racing at our velodrome in Washington Park in 1977 at five years old and have been involved in the velodrome over the years. My parents decided to open up a bicycle shop because my brother and I were really into riding and racing. All the money they were spending on bikes and everything that goes with it, they thought that opening their own shop was a good way to get the best prices on the latest and newest cycling equipment. My dad was already doing all our repairs and maintenance, s why not get paid for it. I am proud of Total Cyclery because it is, and has always been, hometown family owned and operated. It’s all about the love of cycling. I want to help people who want to ride a bike find the enjoyment and simplicity of it. By Brit Windel, President Lakeshore Business Improvement District This year marks the 24th installation of flower baskets in the downtown area. There will be 64 baskets dancing above our downtown city streets, and I couldn’t be more excited! I think we can all agree these beautiful flower baskets bring much delight to our community and tourists alike, and serve as a signature look for our district. This project is very near and dear to me as the first year I planted the baskets right in my backyard! For many years Burr Oaks Greenhouse planted and maintained our baskets, to perfection. This year the plants are from Anton’s Greenhouse where they are planted and nurtured until the weather permits for their installation on our light poles. I’m also super excited that this year we have a local Racine plant expert who will be responsible for their watering and maintenance. With many years of owning his own greenhouse and nursery, Jerry Nelson will be the caretaker for our baskets. If you visit Carthage College or pass by, you surely can’t help but notice the beautiful plantings throughout the campus which are Jerry’s creations. There are many reasons to visit our downtown. Our beautiful flower baskets just happens to be one of them. Be sure to enjoy these beautiful blooms this season. 2023 was the biggest and best year ever for the Kenosha Art Market at Union Park, 4500 Seventh Ave! Deadheads Corner, located on Sixth Ave and 56th Street, challenges stereotypes and proves that young entrepreneurial dreams can be born in Downtown Kenosha. Will, John, and Justin, the trio behind this venture, embody the spirit of community, friendship, and fun in their brand-new business venture. When did this idea for this shop first come to be? Will: I came to John almost a year and a half ago now, and he believed in it, and now we’re here. And for me, I’ve always wanted to be a business owner. So when the opportunity came for both of us, and we were both about ready mentally and realistically, just in our lives, we decided that it was time to start planning it. It took about a year and a half to get the shop open and to find a spot. From the idea of us both agreeing on it, to creating the LLC to doing all the legal structure to build a business plan and actually creating a realistic idea and putting that into fruition. What made you come to Downtown Kenosha? John: We looked in Milwaukee, we looked in Oak Creek, but we also kind of knew that we wanted to be somewhere where there’s a lot of foot traffic and that there was would be a lot of attention on the place because we do understand that businesses don’t survive without a lot of attention. I was struck with amazement with the number of events in Kenosha and this community is - even in the middle of January when we first started with the ice scupture event. I stood outside in the cold all day and it was amazing because from sunup to sundown there were people everywhere. That was exactly what we were looking for. How do three young people successfully open a business? Will: We are blessed in life and have a group of friends who are not hungry or greedy and they'll just work for us because they love what we do and want to support us.
