The Kenosha HarborMarket, the city’s original European-style outdoor shopping and entertainment experience, has launched its 2024 outdoor season - with a large number and wide array of vendors offering fresh produce, readyto-eat foods and a cornucopia of arts and crafts. Customers can shop over 100 vendor booths every week and find the diverse array of local products that they’ve come to expect from Kenosha HarborMarket vendors. They can fill their bags – one is never enough! -- with fresh and local produce, meat, poultry, cheese, flower bouquets and plants, baked goods, pantry staples, soaps, arts and crafts and more. Treat your taste buds to delicious foods and beverages from over a dozen unique prepared food vendors. “We’re excited to offer the robust allaround experience for the community that Kenoshans and our friends near and far have enjoyed for two decades,” HarborMarket Executive Director Andrea Forgianni said. “We're adding new vendors every week, so there is always something original to discover at Kenosha’s Original HarborMarket.” The market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through October, at its traditional outdoor location: on Second Avenue and Place de Douai, one block west of the lakefront museums. Park at our free Downtown parking garage at 56th and Eighth Ave and ride the streetcar to the Market! It’s more than just a shopper’s paradise – it’s fun for the whole family. Families come down to Second Ave to enjoy the scenery, with abundant green space, shade trees and Lake Michigan a stone’s throw away. Thousands of people every week enjoy the sounds of an eclectic mix of local musicians performing on two stages. Also on-site are fun activities and community resources for all ages, including the Kenosha Public Library Bookmobile, Versiti blood drives, Pedal Tours and local dance and dramatic arts groups demonstrating their talents. More information, including the weekly vendor map, can be found at kenoshaharbormarket.com. The Kenosha HarborMarket returns Downtown!

The Kenosha/Racine Poets Laureate Program was established in 2011 to celebrate the power and beauty of language by recognizing poets who make meaningful impact on our diverse communities through their poetry, community involvement, and ability to embolden others to take up the pen and speak their souls. This Program is coordinated by a volunteer Board, which appoints poets, based on competitive applications and an interview process, to serve two-year terms as Poets Laureate of Kenosha and of Racine, Wisconsin, including their cities, towns, and villages. We hope you enjoy the poems which have been placed in the windows of dozens of Downtown Kenosha businesses. The 2024 Kenosha Poet Laureate Project, which includes a poetry chapbook, public readings, as well as the Poetry in Windows component, was created to use poetry to celebrate the relationship between the people of Kenosha County and Lake Michigan. “The lake is a fundamental presence and inspiration to those of us living by her shores,” Christopher Kolan of the Kenosha Poet Laureate said. “Poetry is a powerful medium we can use to express thoughts and memories of the lake, as well as those ineffable feelings and longings such a natural wonder evokes in many of us. With this project we discover the power of poetry to connect us to our world, enriching our lives in the process.” Kolon designed the project, curating the poems used from over 36 poems submitted by Wisconsin poets for the poetry chapbook, The Lake Is Mother to Us All, which is available for purchase at Blue House Books, Modern Apothecary, and Lemon Street Gallery. Follow the Kenosha/Racine Poets Laureate Program on Facebook to stay up to date on this beautiful addition to Downtown. Poetry Arrives in Downtown Kenosha While strolling through Downtown Kenosha, keep an eye out for the wonderful artwork of Missy IsleyPoltrock. This image, based on her painting “Angel of Lake Michigan,” accompanies every poem.        Page 72 Downtown Kenosha 2024, Vol. 17 Issue #2 #godowntownkenosha ONLINE AT VISITKENOSHA.COM & HAP2IT.COM

Flashback! Looking west on 55th Street from Sixth Ave, 1928-29. The building on the southwest corner of Sixth Ave and 56th Sreet, currently home to the Jockey Factory Store, historically home to Sears, was built in 1921. By 1928 it was home to the E.W. Uhen Music Company. The building on the right, with the mansard roof, was the company offices for Bain Wagon Factory. And the buildings behind it was the wagon factory. By the late 1930s, they were mostly removed, and 55th Street widened. It is our understanding is that there was a redevelopment plan for the factory area between 55th Street and the Pike Creek which would have a large entertainment complex with a theater fronting onto Sixth Avenue and venues stretching to Sheridan Road. That is why the are was cleared... and then the stock market crashed. No area development would happen until a few years into Franklin Roosevelt's term, and that was focused on infrastructure (transportation, civic, educational).
