We have been roasting coffee in downtown Kenosha since 2020, but we opened our public-facing tasting room last December! We started roasting our coffee inside Rustic Road, and knew that we needed to stay downtown Kenosha while we looked for a larger space. The customers I have met really inspired me to open our own shop! We had many requests for a public-facing side of our coffee roasting business, so I dreamed up our current coffee tasting room with a heavy emphasis on coffee education and space for people to learn about and explore coffee while representing our values. East View Coffee Company is different because we only source coffee from women-owned farms. A lot of these are fair trade and organic as well. I put a lot of time and effort into ethically sourced coffee, all of our coffees have stories, and stopping by the tasting room will allow you to taste different coffee and learn more about it! Speaking of our tasting room, every Thursday at 10am, we host a very informal coffee tasting, giving you a chance to sample and evaluate different roast dates or origins - this might be when you can try some rare, unique, and very tasty coffees in addition to the 15-20 coffees we currently offer. It’s very important to us that East View Coffee Company is welcoming of everyone and a place of conversation and community. We designed our coffee bar to not have equipment in between us and the customer – so we can talk coffee, life, and make connections here in our community. The community and the support of our beautiful downtown has allowed East View Coffee Company and all other businesses to create a growing, thriving, and unique downtown community. We take time to build a connection with every customer. We do lots of little things differently, so we take time to introduce ourselves and talk about what is different here at East View to every person who comes in our door. Moving thoughtfully, we ask about food sensitivities and love to match you with the perfect coffee drink for the day! We are members of 1% for the Planet, which means they look through our financials every year and verify that we have donated at least 1% of our total revenue to environmental causes. We partner with Root Pike WIN and appreciate their work in our community. We compost all our food waste and coffee grounds! Our coffee bags, as well as all our cold coffee cups and straws are compostable. We encourage our customers to bring in reusable cups or stay and enjoy their coffee in our in-house cups (we have a loyalty program just for people using refillable cups/in-house cups). Explore our fantastic museums! Explore our fantastic museums! What is the best part of working at the museums? I enjoy working with the staff, volunteers, and visitors as well as the learning opportunities available every day! Please share with us something you’ve learned since working at the museums. I have learned so much more about the Wisconsin Story and Native American culture and history here in Kenosha. What types of groups come through the museums? All kinds: veterans, senior groups, colleges, all schools, daycares and virtual schools and homeschools, scout troops, travel groups, community organizations, government officials, families and more! Approximately how many groups per year come through our various museums? Prior to the pandemic, we served over 12,000 guests in group programming alone, this does not include those who came for events, weddings, classes and self-guided tours. Are tours available at all three museums? Any group of 10 or more people, may call and schedule a guided tour and program through any of the museums. They can visit our website and ask to reserve one of our many options at all three museums. For more information on the Kenosha Public Museum, Civil War Musuem, and the Dinosaur Discovery Museum, visit museums.kenosha.org. Or to schedule a tour, people can reach me at 262-653-4424 or email [email protected]. What is something about the Kenosha Public Museum that the average person might not know? On the 2nd Floor in the Kenosha Public Museum, we have an exhibit entitled "From Curiosity to Science" telling the story of the establishment of museums. The curator has added some fun items in each cabinet that don't really belong, such as: a unicorn, a dinosaur in a glass jar, and a squirrel in a canoe to name a few. Have you ever seen the movie “Night at the Museum”? What do you think would happen if things came to life at night at our museums? We are actually hosting a private overnight event this year for a large girl scout group. We are among the few in the area that provde overnight events, and the itinerary includes: fun activities, snacks, flashlight tours, a movie, and breakfast in the morning. I don't think anything will come to life, but I'm sure it will be very memorable! We know it’s not right to pick favorites but we’re going to ask anyway, do you have a favorite museum? I love them all for various reasons, but my sons love the Dinosaur Discovery Museum and now that they are older, they volunteer to go to the dig site in Montana next year. My dad, Mike Bjorn, worked for other menswear stores, so he was familiar with the industry when he started the business, Mike Bjorn’s, in 1981 with my mom Judy after saving up their hard-earned money. Their first location was downtown at 614 59th St (currently home to Kindred Kitties). I grew up with the business and have been invested in it my entire life. It’s my parent’s legacy and I’m happy and honored to be a part of it! Bjorn’s is probably the most unique clothing store in the entire country. We specialize in menswear for events of all kinds. We’re known for having an extensive amount of inventory at extremely fair prices. We cater products for anything from a casual dinner outfit to a top hat and tails. Bjorn’s provides personalized customer service that can’t be beat by box stores or online shopping. We provide a welcoming atmosphere for all, with a unique, quirky charm that’s found nowhere else. When if comes to the perfect suit, fit is everything. The guy that buys the expensive suit must tell everyone in the room how much he spent on it. Our suits do the talking for you. The key to maintaining a successful business is dedication and commitment to the highest levels of customer service on all fronts. I am so proud to be a downtown Kenosha business owner. Downtown has a different vibe than the rest of the Kenosha area. We have a strong collection of unique, locally owned businesses and we all seem to share a sense of pride for our little community. My story - Brett Bjorn of Bjorn’s Fine Clothing, 5614 Sixth Ave We have a rich history throughout Kenosha; Crystal’s has had seven different locations around town. It started in early 1896 by Louis Crystal at 5701 22nd Ave. Through the years, it has been located on 56th Street and next to the First National Bank on Sixth Avenue. When my mother and father, Sam and Joanne, took over the business, they altered the name to S.J. Crystal’s to represent their first names. The earliest memory I have was in the late 1950’s, we were in the building that now holds Lulu Birds from 1963 until the early 80s. At that time, the downtown area was beginning to deteriorate, many of the stores here had already closed or moved west. There were many factors which contributed to the downfall of downtown in the 70s and 80s – the Southport Mall didn’t help. But people’s shopping habits were changing, and many of the old time retailers were retiring or dying off, and their families didn’t want to continue the business. The same could have happened to SJ Crystals, had I not loved the business and wanted to carry on with it. Like many others, we relocated west to Pershing Plaza in the early 80s, but were excited to return to Downtown Kenosha in 2004. I feel like I’m the luckiest man in the world, because I still enjoy coming to work everyday and meeting new people and seeing all the new styles with every season. I find it fun to see the old styles returning and the younger people think these are some new groundbreaking fashion trends. My story - Lew Aceto of S.J. Crystals, 5701 Sixth Ave photo by D.Stancato

DeShaun • Blak Coffee • 5615 Seventh Ave Q. What kind of vibes do you aim for at your coffee shop? A: A look into culture and my family. We are a shop where everyone feels welcome when you walk through the door. In downtown Kenosha, a lively coffee culture thrives, boasting an eclectic mix of charming coffee shops. Whether you prefer an Americano with honey, a creamy white chocolate mocha, or a coffee soda, you're sure to discover the perfect brew. Beyond their exceptional beverages, these cafes offer more than just a caffeine fix—they serve as welcoming sanctuaries for locals to convene, work, or simply unwind over a steaming cup of java. See the full interviews at godowntownkenosha.com/blog Shanon • The Buzz Cafe • 5621 Sixth Ave Q. What are some of the most popular items on the menu at The Buzz? A: The Honey Bee and Nutella Latte are definitely our top two. Honorable mention to one of our seasonal lattes: The Sugar Cookie Latte, which is a staff favorite. Jenny • East View Coffee Company • 716 58th St Q. What makes East View Coffee stand out from all the other coffee shops in the area? A: From being tip-free, where we pay all our employees a living wage, to having a very mission of supporting women-owned farms, giving back to our community, and putting care into everything we do, it just feels different. Anna • Anna’s on the Lake • 5919 Sixth Ave Q. What inspired you to start up a coffee shop? A: It was the desire to create a place where people could connect and make their own special memories over the simple pleasure of a good cup of coffee. We’ve witnessed that a lot over this past year and it feels really special to be a part of people’s lives by creating an inviting space where bonds are formed, and memories are made. Tiffany • Café at The Stella • 5706 Eighth Ave Q. How does the Café at The Stella connect with the local community? Tiffany: One way we foster our connection is by extending gestures of appreciation, such as offering complimentary coffee to the Kenosha Police. Additionally, we actively support local artists by providing a platform to showcase their work. Currently, Lemon Street Gallery features artwork available for purchase within our café, allowing patrons to experience the vibrant creativity of our community firsthand. Q. Can you tell us a little about your fantastic staff? Tiffany: Our team of Baristas embodies the essence of hospitality, blending professionalism with genuine warmth to elevate every guest interaction. Hardworking, spirited, and committed to excellence, our staff is the heart and soul of the cafe, continually striving to exceed expectations and create moments of delight for our guests. photo by D.Stancato photo by D.Stancato photo by D.Stancato photo by D.Stancato photo by D.Stancato

Over 100 years ago, the one story building located at 4120 Seventh Ave. was constructed as a billiard hall and “soft drink parlor.” -During prohibition, we had a plethora of these soft drink parlors all over town (wink, wink). When prohibition was repealed in 1933, Rosing’s Hall quickly became one of the most popular places in town for drink, community meetings and other social events. During the war years of the 1940’s, the tavern seems to have fallen into a flux, with the liquor license being passed around. In September, 1946, Carl Williams opened Williams Bar. This would be the extremely brief, for by November of that same year, former bartenders of Rosling’s, Clem Zeihen and WWII veteran Chester Matoska, take over ownership from Williams, naming their new place Clem and Chet’s. By the summer of 1956, Clem Zeihen was out of the partnership and the name of t he tavern officially became Chet’s Sports Bar. Through the years, it evolved into one of Kenosha’s premiere taverns, a gathering place for all walks of life - from the common man to the Kennedy - seriously. At least one Kennedy spent some time at Chet’s, Robert Kennedy dined there on Sunday, January 31, 1960, and stayed the night in Kenosha. By 1958, Chet’s Sports Bar began really pushing their hot beef sandwiches and quickly became the #1 hot beef sandwich place in town. By the summer of 1983, Chet Matoska, then 66, had decided it was time to retire. August 12, 1983 was the grand opening of a brand new tavern at this location, T.G.s, owned by Tony and Ronnie Rocsioli-Greco and Ronnie’s mother Angie. The new owners wanted a different name, stating that “There is only one Chet,” and choose T.G,’s as an abbreviation of the classic adage TGIF, or Thank God It’s Friday, as they dubbed it a “celebration of people.” Flashback! TG’s Sports Bar continued the tradition that Chet built of being a meeting place for Kenosha, as well as keeping the famous hot beef sandwiches and expanding with some of their Italian heritage dishes like lasagna and ravioli. In the early 1990’s Tony and Ronnie RoscioliGreco stepped away from the business and David Palmer took over ownership. Throughout the early aughts, TG’s focused on their food and more live music. Local acts Pat Crawford and Ash Can School were some favorites who would play regularly. By September 2003, TG’s would get their next owners,Theresa and Sherry Revis. The Revis sisters (inlaw) kept the food and live music angle going strong, and they even branched out with catering services. By the end of March, 2019, new owners Kristine Brittich and her husband Randy took over as the latest owners. After only 12 months of owning the bar, the COVID shutdown hit. In August 2022, TG’s closed their doors for the last time, with Brittich hosting a last ditch estate sale, selling everything in the bar that someone could carry out. Many feared that the days of good drinks, food, and conversation at this location was gone forever. However, the building would not stay closed for long. Anyone who has spent any considerable time in downtown Kenosha over the past three decades is familiar with Jim Matzur. Like Matoska before him, Matzur became a well-known neighborhood icon as the owner of The Boat House Pub and Eatery, 4917 7th Ave, which he opened in 1992. After thirty years overlooking the Kenosha harbor, providing smoked fish, delicious dinners, their famous Long Island ice teas, and occasional entertainment, Matzur decided it was time to retire. But that didn’t last, he soon was coaxed out of retirement by former customers who wanted that special touch that was missing from the new owners of the Boat House - the smoked fish, and the offer of cooking a customer’s fresh catch of the day. It was a huge part of his previous business, and Matzur saw a need to bring it back. Matzur purchased the building at 4120 Seventh Ave., and began an extensive remodeling. “It needed a lot of work,” Matzur said in a 2024 interview. “We kept the bar and the back side of the bar, but just about everything else was replaced and renovated. It was in rough shape and needed some care.” In early 2024, Matzur opened Fin and Ale, a brand new venue which his fans and friends from the Boat House days will find refreshingly familiar. Matzur’s style and craftsmanship with wood, shown prominently at the Boat House, has carried over to Fin and Ale. Today, Fin and Ale offers a fantastic evolving menu featuring such mouthwatering dishes as smoked baby back ribs, smoked split chicken, and prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays. “Lake Michigan is a magnet for me,” Matzur said. “I knew whatever I was going to do, it would be in downtown Kenosha. But the history of this building is so amazing. I couldn’t bear to see it just rot away.” Although he is focused on smoking fish and meat in the back kitchen, Matzur has brought on the best team at Fin and Ale to provide you with a wonderful experience. It might look different, but Fin and Ale definitely carries the spirit of Chet Matoska in every drink poured, every conversation started, and every bite of a sandwich. Speaking of sandwiches, Matzur had some news to bring us. “I’m currently in the process of perfecting a hot beef sandwich recipe. I am looking forward to having people try it.” By Jason Hedman A moment is captured during a live band A moment is captured during a live band performance at TG’s in 2009 performance at TG’s in 2009 (photo: S.R.
