Let’s Talk About Health, Baby By Beth of House of Nutrition One of my favorite things about working in customer service, especially in a small business, is the customers. I know what you’re thinking - that I’m exaggerating or pandering - but I’m being serious! I’ve worked in customer service (in one form or another) my whole life. If you would have asked me five or ten years ago my answer would have been my coworkers or the scheduling flexibility. Working at House of Nutrition has completely changed my whole mindset and I can honestly say the customer interactions here are the best part of my day. Now you may wonder, “Where is this going? What does this have to do with health?”. Well, one of the greatest takeaways from the many lengthy and wonderful conversations I’ve had with our customers (who have been on this earth longer than I have) is to take care of yourself while you are young. I can’t tell you how many times a conversation about a certain ailment or condition leads back to “If only I had done this or that while my body was young”. When we are young, it’s so easy to ignore the warning signs our bodies send us. An achy knee from time to time or an upset stomach now and again doesn’t seem like too big of a deal, especially when our bodies can still bounce back easily. But let’s keep in mind that bounce back won’t last forever, and eventually problems tend to stick around for longer and longer bouts of time. So, with this in mind what can we do to make sure our bodies and minds age in a way where our quality of life lasts as long as we do? My answer to this is - baby steps. Lifestyle changes take time, repetition, and dedication to stick. If you make too many big shifts at once, more than likely they will only last a short time. I’ve found the changes that last are planned out and started slowly. Do you have inflammation or joint pain? Start with slow diet and exercise changes and add CBD or Curcumin to your daily routine. (Side note, our CBD brand Hemp Rescue is on a huge sale right now until the end of the year. Don’t miss out, as we almost never put this line on sale!) Do you constantly have digestion issues? Work on keeping a food journal to find what foods trigger those issues and add in digestive enzymes or a probiotic to your daily routine. Even something as small as starting to take a multivitamin every day can help our bodies age well and slowly. None of us need to make huge, sweeping lifestyle changes to start working on our health. As they say, slow and steady wins the race. For those of us who have the privilege of barely thinking about the long-term health of our bodies and minds, let’s start! And for those of us who think it’s too late, I say it’s never too late! Prevention can start at any age or stage. You may not be able to undo the damage done, but you may be able to stop it from getting worse. This season, let’s all decide what we can do to slowly turn our lives onto the prevention route. Whether that’s getting out for a walk every day, searching out herbal remedies for stress, or reworking our nighttime routines to ensure we get enough quality sleep each night, pick something and start it! And always feel free to stop by House of Nutrition for guidance, support, or inspiration. I promise, it’ll make my day! Whether it is a gift or a new fragrance for your own pleasure. The first thing people say when they enter Dawn's Style is "It smells so great in here"! Q. What's is one of your favorite holiday memories? A. One of my best Christmas gifts was in 1972. I got an 8 track player! Ooooh yeah! I was so cool then.... I could jam in my bedroom to 8 tracks. My parents went to Topps store and picked out some awesome tapes. Most were THE BEST OF!!!!! Q. Do you have any tips for finding the perfect holiday gift? A. Finding the perfect gift is sometimes challenging. People usually buy what they want these days. So, I have found that just wandering in small shops and when something calls out to you, that is usually the special sign to buy it. Remember it is a gift, and should be something special. Kevin Ervin, co-owner of Franks Diner, will glady be Frank with you Q. Franks Diner has been a Downtown Kenosha staple since 1926! How did you and your wife Julie become involved? A. We bought Franks in December of 2010 after becoming regulars and friends of the previous owners, Chris and Lynn. They were looking to sell, and move on to another venture. They knew Julie and I were looking to own a business here in town, so after asking us a couple of times (and after many drinks) we decided to look into it. After we did our due diligence, we decided to buy the place. Q. What is your favorite dish at Franks Diner? A. I love the Chorizo Garbage Plate, or our French Toast. Q. What do you love about owning Franks Diner? A. The crazy atmosphere and my staff, they can be really fun to work with, and if we get that Franks vibe going, it can be a blast. Q. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? A. I’ve never met Guy Fieri, but I spent five days with Gene Simmons of Kiss. I also once was a bodyguard for strippers. Maybe that’s not so surprising. Q. Can you tell us a little about your awesome staff? A. They are awesome! Right now I have one of the best groups we’ve ever had. Josh, and Sandee are great managers. Then we have Ashley and Casey who step up every time we need it. Christina and Jake are newer cooks and they’re rocking it. We have our older staff; Sal, Nico, Jess, Rayia, Heidi, and Nalani, who we can’t live without. And then we have some newbies who are fitting right in. I really like my staff right now, and it’s been a while since I’ve had a complete team like this. “I think our success is due to all the hard work our staff puts in. We try hard every day to make some great food and give our customers a fun unique experience.” - Kevin Ervin Franks Diner 508 58th St (262) 657-1017 franksdinerkenosha.com

Our Story by Brenda Brady, co-owner of Alpaca Art Q. How did you get started in the paint and pottery business? A. My twin sister, Becky, and I have always liked working with our artistic side. From about the time we turned 18 we had the idea of having our own business, just didn't know what it was, thought it might be a flower shop. Then an interior design class at Gateway had Brenda create a business - including the design and some of the planning for it. At that time she visited a paint-your-own-pottery studio in Grandledge, Michigan, and decided to do it for her project. With gentle nudging from family, we decided to just do it for real. Q. Can you describe the types of products and services Alpaca Art offers to customers? A. Mostly walk-in pottery painting. But we also have pottery-to-go, where you can pick pieces and bring supplies home to paint. We get a lot of daycares and other organizations who do this. We also offer group and company team-building outings. Q. What kind of pottery designs can customers choose to paint? A. Figurines - banks & box shapes - dishes such as mugs, bowls, plates & platters. Also household items such as vases, spoon rests & frames. And yes, light-up Christmas trees. Q. Could you explain the process of creating and customizing pottery at your studio? A. Walk in anytime during open hours to paint, choose a piece off the shelves, decide on paint colors, relax and start painting. If you need some ideas we would be happy to help you figure it out. When your piece is finished, you will leave it with us. We put a clear coat of glaze over it and fire it. You will be able to pick up your fired piece about a week later. Q. What materials and techniques do you use in your pottery and painting processes? A. We use low-fire clay bisque pieces. Our 3,000 square ft studio offers painting with glazes, which we then fire. Dishes are food-safe after firing. We supply brushes, sponges, and stamps. Q. Do customers need to make an appointment or just walk in? A. They can just walk in during open hours. 10 ways to rock winter in Downtown Kenosha Avoid cabin fever this winter and Go Downtown! There is so much to enjoy downtown, from cozy places to grab a hot cocoa to spaces offering crisp fresh air. Here are ten ways to rock out winter in Downtown Kenosha! 1. Visit one of the Museums. You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy the five incredible museums in the Kenosha Area. Spot your favorite characters from the ice age, learn about Kenosha’s auto-making and business background, dress up as a paleontologist, or even play in a life-size Lincoln Log cabin! Downtown Kenosha is home to FIVE museums! 2. Make Art – without the mess at home. Visit one of the many DIY art studios to create unique art. Create a vase on the pottery wheel at Lemon Street Gallery, paint a pre-made ceramic piece at Alpaca Art, or splatter a canvas at Hot Mess Studio! You can even make your own jewelry at Peacetree Originals and Red Rose’s Bead Haven! 3. Take a Ride on the Electric Streetcar! The streetcars run rain or shine, and there is a certain kind of beauty as you cruise the lakefront in the winter – especially on a snowy day. 4. Let the games begin. Book a virtual tee time and practice your swing at Tavern on 6th – the bar and restaurant has a virtual golf simulator on the second floor. Or test your aim when throwing axes at Hold My Beer. 5. Explore new businesses. If you haven’t been to Latibule or Blast from the Past yet, add them to your list of things to do! 6. Grab a Book. Visit Blue House Books or Studio Moonfall to pick up a new read. It is the perfect time of year to cozy up with your next read. 7. Take a beverage tour! Whether you enjoy coffee, tea, or cocoa, the cafes downtown have delicious beverages to warm you from the inside out. Anna’s on the Lake, BLAK Coffee, and The Buzz Café are just a few stops to make. House of Nutrition and Modern Apothecary offer teas and supplements to brew your own potions at home, too! 8. Think tropical! Visit EQUINOX botanical boutique or A Summer’s Garden Florist and add a little greenery to your life this winter. Both shops offer a great selection of house plants. 9. Enjoy a little entertainment. The Kenosha Comedy Club, the Rhode Center for the Arts, and many venues throughout downtown offer live entertainment. For a list of upcoming fun, visit GoDowntownKenosha.com events calendar. 10. Bundle up and head out! Take a spin around the ice rink at Veterans Memorial Park or stroll around the Sculpture Walk-Harbor Park. You’ll love the fresh air. Don’t let a little cooler temps keep you stuck at home. There is plenty of fun to be found downtown. Q. How long have you been bartending at The Port? A. Almost a year and a half. Q. How did you get into bartending? A. I started bartending while living out west a couple years ago. My friend owns a bar/venue called The Plaid Pig in Tacoma, WA. Over the summer, a friend and I painted a mural background for the stage. I asked my friend if he needed an extra bartender for a reopening - he said maybe, but then on opening day, he asked me to come in. It was crazy busy, so I learned quickly. Q. What do you love about bartending? A. Not having to put up with anyone's crap, and feeling like I'm just hanging out with friends. Q. What do you love about Downtown Kenosha? A. All the food, art, places to hang with friends, and easy access to the beach! Q. What is your favorite cocktail to make? A. I can make a good scratch margarita, thanks to the bartender who trained me in Washington State. Shout out to Nic Cote! She's in real estate now. Q. Best advice you’ve received behind the bar? A. "Who cares" — You're right, who cares !! Q. What do you do for fun when you’re not working? A. I love making art and see live music. Q. What is your favorite drink? A. I'm currently on a Tully kick (thanks Z) Q. Tell us your best bar joke? A. The past, present, and future walk into the bar. It was tense.... Q. Favorite band you’ve seen at The Port? A. Big Time. They are our friends in a ska punk band from Seattle. They toured out here and got them a show at The Port. It was tight. Q. Know any bar tricks? A. I don't. Maybe someday! Q. Strangest tip you’ve ever gotten? A. I've received fake $100s. Also, just the other night, I found a coupon for a free appetizer at a pizza parlor! Kenosha Public Market moves indoors for the season! By Laura Belsky, Treasurer and spokesperson for the Kenosha Public Market The Kenosha Public Market opened in 2020, and has become a great success. We offer vendors the opportunity to sell their products, either through the online store or the physical market. We are proud of what we have achieved in such a short period of time, and we are looking forward to continuing to grow and develop the Kenosha Public Market. Through our market, the community has access to healthy, local food options that can be hard to find elsewhere. This is especially important for low-income families who are struggling to make ends meet. To help make it easier for these families to afford nutritious food, the market provides a match program for up to $20 of their Snap food benefits per visit. The Kenosha Public Market is proud to provide fresh, nutritious food options. Through our match program, we are striving to make healthy, local food accessible to all, regardless of income. We hope to continue this program and expand our reach in the community, so that everyone can benefit from all the nutritious options the market has to offer every weekend throughout the year. Kenosha Public Market’s mission is to provide a diverse marketplace offering locally grown, raised, and produced products along with traditional and gourmet foods and beverages, household items, fresh flowers, and artisan crafts. Enjoy an incredible selection of locally grown produce, fresh cut flowers and fruits (seasonal) locally sourced meats, poultry and mushrooms, eggs, cheeses, garlics, jellies/jams, honey, pasta, granola, pantry goods, baked goods, roasted nuts, sauces, dog treats, soaps and lotions, CBD products and more! Marvel at the hand-crafted assortment of one-of-a-kind gifts made by our local artisans. The market is a friendly, welcoming place for all. The staff at Kenosha Public Market are always happy to answer questions, give advice, and make sure that everyone has a good time. The Merry and Bright Holiday Market is the perfect place to get into the holiday spirit and get all your Christmas shopping done in one place. Don't miss out on this festive event! It’s a new week with new treasures at Lulu Birds Q. What is Lulu birds all about? A. While our main focus is on the vintage and antique variety, we also have amazing up-cycled and hand crafted pieces such as furniture build from architectural salvage and super cool lamps made from antique items such as old cameras and fire extinguishers. We also have a fun boutique area with great gift ideas and more personal items. Q. What makes Lulu Birds so unique? A. Our unique and talented vendors of course! We have an amazing group of individuals that bless our community by sharing their talents and creativity through our humble storefront. Q. How often do you get new furniture in? A. Every single week, and sometimes multiple times a week. Q. How does Lulu Birds get ready for the busy holiday season? A. We love to amp up for the holiday season! We add new items to our boutique for fun and unique gift grabs. Our vendors also bring in the best locally made seasonal decor! We also have a wide variety of furniture for all of your entertaining needs, from dining sets and buffets to bars/bar carts and dressers for that spare bedroom that needs updating before out of town company arrives. Q. Why is it so important to SHOP LOCAL? A. One of the biggest reasons for me is the flavor or personality local shops bring to their community. Any town USA has most of the popular big box stores, people don’t need to travel to your town for them. But they do travel for the unique small businesses. And that brings revenue into the community that STAYS in the community. Always shop small, whenever you can! Q. What do you love about owning a business in downtown Kenosha? A. So many things! The area. The camaraderie with other owners. How easy it is to walk our Downtown between restaurants and storefronts. The list goes on. Q&A w/Joy Schweitzer Ermert of Lulu Birds 5716 Sixth Ave (262) 883-4421
