A little dirty, but a whole lot of fun at the K-Town Burlesque Show! written by Eric Houghton, artistic director of Pressed Ham Productions Pressed Ham Productions has a core group of six, each of us with designated responsibilities covering every aspect of our show. We begin meeting months in advance, and draft more people as the event grows closer. When the curtain goes up we have a cast and crew of thirty or more. I’m one of the original creators; I write the script, design the set, and work with a great team to keep our look and theme consistent, on brand and within budget. I also play Jack Franklin in the ongoing detective serial, which ties every show together. The traditional definition of burlesque is a variety show with striptease, and that’s what our show is. Of the eighteen acts, only three are dancers, and there’s no actual nudity. Our show also features a contortionist, a pole extraordinaire, a hula-hoop queen, comedy, magic, and tons of live music. The comedy is smart and bawdy, but does not fall back on profanity. And yes, at times some people will be scantily clad, but our dancers are about artistic expression and body positivity, not raunch. However, leave the kids at home, because it’s still a grown-up show. After the first show (which we crammed together in three weeks) we stopped using canned music. The band plays everything. In recent years, we have partnered with the phenomenal group Tailspin, led by local musician Keith Browne. Every show has a new theme, a fresh storyline. This is our ninth K-Town Burlesque, and the plot has thickened over the years. Our storyline used to be told through a few isolated sketches. Now the story it is woven through the show, bringing the audience, emcees, and variety performers into the plot. It has become a play within a play, or a variety show within a play. A variety show within a fast paced, campy, ridiculous play. For the first time the show in January 2024 will run two weekends (January 19th - 27th, 8pm shows on Fridays and two shows, 7pm and 10pm on Saturdays), which is exciting. Naughty Number Nine has a top notch cast. Comic Dobie Maxwell, magician Glen Gerard, and Revolva, a twirling diva from Detroit, will be gracing our stage for the first time. We’re also welcoming back Vee Valentine, Indigo Jewel, Riley, Anne Mollerskov, Erin Riccio, and Neimo Sworld. Tickets are available at www.ktownburlesque.com. General admission is $25, and seats will probably be available at box office on the nights of the show. The tables at the front of our stage cost $150 for a four top and $300 for an 8 top, and include bottle service. Those go pretty quick, so if you want a table I recommend purchasing in advance. Q. Do you have any special promotions or events planned for the upcoming holiday season? A. Yes! We have Artistree going on from Nov 25th - Dec 24th, an exhibition where we turn our brick gallery into a winter wonderland full of handmade gifts by local artists. We are also running a special on gift certificates: If you purchase $50 or more in gift certificates, you get a free Lemon Street Gallery mug! Q. What is the perfect gift you can pick up at Lemon Street Gallery and ArtSpace? A. People love to give gift certificates for art classes. Nothing better than giving the gift of a new skill! Q. What is one of your favorite holiday memories? A. When I was a kid, I would come downstairs on Christmas morning and my mom would leave “Santa foot prints” using fake snow and boots. She always took that extra step to make the holidays special. Q. Do you have any tips for finding the perfect holiday gift? A. I always take a second to think about a past conversation that I had with the person to see if I remember a small detail or interest that was brought up. If not, then I find something that reminds me of them or captures their energy. Q. What do you love about the holiday season in Downtown Kenosha? A. I love the downtown lights and how cozy the downtown area feels with a light (emphasis on “light”) layer of snow. Holiday Activities! Ice Sculptures! Foodie Event! This time of year brings to mind three things: Merry & Bright, Snow Daze, and Kenosha Restaurant Week. Visit Kenosha promotes all three – and produces Kenosha Restaurant Week. Here is a breakdown of what happens when: Various entities in Kenosha come together to present Merry & Bright, a collection of holiday events and activities throughout Kenosha County for residents and visitors to enjoy all season long. It’s a reason to gather with family members, friends, and neighbors as you make new friends at local entertainment venues, museums, and businesses. It’s about that festive feeling you get when you sing along to a carol, look at holiday displays, and enjoy hot chocolate. The season kicks off with the City of Kenosha’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony outside of the Kenosha Public Museum on November 24, followed by Lightin’ Up in Downtown Kenosha on the same evening. This includes family activities, Santa, live entertainment, and special promotions at participating Downtown businesses and venues. This is just the start! In the days and weeks that follow, there will be the Opening Night Gala, Gallery of Trees, and Historic Durkee Mansion Holiday Display – all part of Christmas at Kemper. Kenosha Public Market and Kenosha HarborMarket will be hosting special expanded holiday editions. The Kenosha Symphony Orchestra and Kenosha Pops Concert Band will be performing holiday concerts. Charlie Brown will be asking what Christmas is all about with the Lakeside Players at Rhode Center for the Arts. The Kenosha History Center is one of the places hosting Santa visits. The Civil War Museum will show us what a Victorian Christmas was like. The Kenosha Public Museum will share how the holiday is celebrated around the world. This is a sampling of the fun events going on! Keep checking VisitKenosha.com/Holidays for all the calendar updates. While you are in the holiday and giving spirit, please consider donating to the Bundle Up Kenosha winter-wear collection drive by Visit Kenosha. Items being collected include new and gently used coats, gloves, scarves, and hats, as well as new socks. Items may be dropped off through January 15 at the Visit Kenosha Visitor Information Center at 600 52nd Street, Suite 140 (Mon.-Fri. 8am-4:30pm) or at the Wisconsin Welcome Center – Kenosha at I-94 and Highway 165. All items donated will remain in our community. As the calendar turns to January, it’s time for the Snow Daze Festival on January 27. Enjoy ice sculptures in front of Downtown businesses and at Veterans Memorial Park. While you’re downtown, go ice skating at the park, warm up at a coffee shop or pub, go shopping, visit a museum or art gallery, grab a bite to eat, or go axe throwing! Go to VisitKenosha.com/SnowDaze as the date approaches for event details. Next up is Kenosha Restaurant Week, February 24 to March 3. More than 50 restaurants, pubs, and food shops throughout Kenosha County are expected to participate. This is a nine-day celebration of our community's delicious dining scene. Each venue creates their own discounted menus or special offers. Restaurant Week is a way to show support and appreciation to our locally owned businesses. As the week approaches, go to VisitKenosha.com/RW for details. There’s always something going on in Downtown Kenosha!
