SECTION 1: ROCKLAND ORANGE CHAPTER HISTORY CHARTER SUMMARY 1990-2020
The idea for a Rockland Orange Chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc. was born in Philadelphia,
PA when founding Chapter President Jean Wiles met Nellie Thornton, the soon to be National
President. Mother Jean shared with Mother Nellie that she was concerned that her oldest son was
the only African American child in his entire fourth grade class and one of only three in the entire
school. Mother Nellie encouraged her to form a chapter of Jack and Jill in Rockland County to
provide a positive support group for her son and others like him. With the backing of the
Westchester Chapter and their chapter liaison Mother Parthenia Brown, a provisional chapter was
formed and in 1989 at the Twenty-Ninth National Convention, the Rockland Chapter was approved
as the 242nd chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. During the initial installation ceremony,
National President Nellie Thornton and Eastern Regional Director Sanderal Brown installed twenty-
four mothers bounded by the proximity of their homes and a driving desire to make things better
for their children.
The Chapter's first officers were President- Jean Wiles, Vice President - Judith Johnson,
Corresponding Secretary - Shirley Mascoll, Treasurer - Alexandreena Dixon, Program Director -
Elaine Toney, Journalist/Historian - Valerie Mathews, and Parliamentarian - Erline Everette. The
other chartered mothers were Claudette Clarke, Olga Davis, Sharon Davis, Eleanor Delfyett,

Mallett, Juanita Mitchell, Frances Osei, Mary Jane Paulding, Winsome Downie-Rainford, Adlett
SSqeuciornesd, PFalayceeB. Wilson and Debra Walker.
During the 2013-2014 program year and under the leadership of President Icilma Fergus Rowe and
Vice President Michele Liard-Williams, the Rockland Chapter became the Rockland Orange Chapter
with its expansion into Orange County.

children to develop leadership skills, earn community service hours and provide
educational opportunities for our children. This program allowed our JJROC Pre-Teens
and Teens to feel connected to the community and share their gifts and talents.

with pride from the sidelines.

On Sunday, September 15th 1963 at 10:22am, a bomb
Carole Robertson Day exploded at a church killing four young girls including
Carole, the daughter of Jack and Jill Mother Member Alpha
Robertson. The attack was racially motivated and served as
the conduit for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Each year we highlight those human rights that our dear Jill
Carole did not live to enjoy and honor her by walking into
our destiny with purpose.
The Rockland Orange Special Events Committee hosted our
chapter’s annual combined Jack and Jill and Carole
Robertson Day celebration on Saturday, September 18th at
Boundless Adventures Zip Line and Aerial Park inside the
SUNY Purchase College Campus from 10am-2pm.
While enjoying lunch, time was allocated for the
presentations and activities. Each attendee was given a
button with the message "Honoring her life by fulfilling our
ancestors' dreams". Madam President reciting a touching
poem speaking of the details of the bombing and the
importance of keeping Jill Carole's memory alive.
Next, graduating Teen Chapter President R.J. Rowe and
Secretary Gillian Parris spoke to the crowd of almost 100
people about what celebrating Carole Robertson day each
year has meant to them and explained how they will
continue the tradition in the years to come.
Finally, all children were invited to visit the activity table
which had printouts from the brand new National CR
curriculum for each grade group. The activities ranged from
coloring Carole's favorite things, writing her a
letter/poem/rap, watching related movies, and crafting
questions intended to spark civic/legislative action in today's
environment. Children were encouraged to choose one and
complete at home. One submission was from Hot Shot
BOUNDLESS ADVENTURES Gabriella Santi who wrote "I honor you every September by

Founders' Day Rockland Orange Senior Teen Joseph L. Griffith shared an
idea where each Jack and Jill designs a personalized time
capsule to be opened upon graduation. The Special Events
committee felt compelled to use it during Founders' Day as
the perfect way to bridge past, present, and future.
On Sunday January 23, 2022 from 2 -3:30 PM the
FUNdamentals of Founders day celebration will be an
extraordinary Tri-Chapter virtual event hosted by the
Greater Pocono, Rockland Orange, and Mid-Hudson Valley
Chapters. Attendees will partake in a tribute to our
Founders as we commemorate 84 years of excellence. The
festivities will include a Keynote address from notable
guest speakers that will inspire mothers to maximize their
Jack and Jill experience while they groom, nurture and
cultivate their children. In lockstep with the Organization's
emphasis on building a legacy, each mother will be tasked
with the opportunity to write a heartfelt tribute to their
child(ren) to be encased in a time capsule that will be gifted
to their children to collect memories throughout the years
and opened upon graduation. The letter can reflect their
personal hopes, the future of our country, the world or
combinations thereof. Artifacts, ideas, or
accomplishments that represent Black America at that time
in history will be encouraged to be added to the time
capsule yearly as well.
Each attendee will receive a special swag bag with theme-
related items.
It is the immense pleasure of this Tri-Chapter Founders

Black Family Day The Rockland Orange Chapter will celebrate the beauty of
the black family on Sunday, May 1st 2022 at The Garner
Arts Center in Garnerville, NY 12pm-4pm. The Special
Events committee will highlight this program year's BFD
theme: Black Love in Art by commissioning a local
photographer of color to take a series of professional
photographs of each chapter Mother's family to capture
black love in action. The photos will then be revealed on
Black Family Day in a private showing at the Garner Art
Gallery with the intention of evoking pride, awe, and self-
reflection.
On BFD, attendees will be encouraged to dress in attire
suitable for a day at the museum and will each be treated as
special guests of honor. Madam President Mary Lynn
Nicolas-Brewster will open the event with thanks and
prayer, followed by a discussion of prominent U.S.
African-American artists and painters by our Senior Teens.
Each family will then gather by their designated covered
photographs for the big reveal! Live video will be used to
capture the reactions to be complied and shared at a later
date. Afterwards, everyone will be encouraged to admire
their fellow Jack and Jill families' works of art while
enjoying passed hors d'oeuvres and beverages. The
celebration will conclude with music and live
entertainment by some of our talented young dancers.
Inspiration for this event was drawn from the children's
book Parker Looks Up, An Extraordinary Moment by
Parker and Jessica Curry. In the book, young Parker stops
in her tracks at a portrait of First Lady Michele Obama and
sees the possibility and promise, the hopes and dreams of
herself in this powerful painting of Michelle Obama. An
everyday moment became an extraordinary one…that
continues to resonate its power, inspiration, and indelible
impact. Because, as Jessica Curry said, “anything is
possible regardless of race, class, or gender.
