SYMPHONIC BANDS SHAKESPEARE ENSEMBLE DEPARTMENT REPORTS
The Concord Concert and Symphonic Bands are made up of students
from Lindisfarne College and Hastings Girls’ High School. After many
successful years under the baton of John Snowling, the Concord
Symphonic Band was led in 2017 by the new Director of Music and
Performing Arts, Mr Flemming Kristensen. The students reacted well to
the change and 2017 became a busy year of rebuilding the band through
motivating younger players to rise to the challenge of leading the band
and listening closely to the players around them. This certainly happened!
The repertoire for 2017 was varied and challenging and soloists included Back Row: J Cowan, M Devonshire, J Black, A Wilson
Dylan Taylor and Luke Devane on clarinet who both did very well in Front Row: A Olsen, F Del Rosario, O Howlett, W Druzianic,
the particularly exposed parts of the work Appalachian Morning. 2017
included success at band festivals in Hastings, Feilding and Whangarei O Price-Walker
(National Band Festival) where both the Concord Concert and Concert
Symphonic Bands achieved bronze, silver and gold awards. The highlight 2017 JAZZ BAND
was no doubt the five-day trip to Whangarei. Here, our bands not only
performed but also listened to many top-quality student and adult
bands from around the North Island.
Workshops that had been especially organised for the brass,
woodwind, flute and percussion sections were inspiring and
entertaining. In a feat of impressive wind support and standing alongside
approximately 20 other trombonists, Henry Mirams came close to winning
the “long note competition” on his instrument. While in Whangarei, both
bands also performed to a very appreciative audience at Tauraroa Area
School.
Other musical outings included performances during the Blossom Festival
and at the Lindisfarne Gala. Thanks to Mr Matthew Wood (Concord
Concert Band), Mrs Alana Frankum and Mrs Jillian Frizzell (Hastings Girls’
High School) for their support during the year.
PIPE BAND Back Row: Dr F Kristensen, Q Le Lievre, K Patel,
The Pipe Band has had a busy year working on new and challenging J Diprose, H Mirams, Mr M Wood
repertoire. The Pipe Band’s first official parade in 2017 was at the
Lindisfarne College Gala where the band performed to a very appreciative Front Row: K Albers-Connolly, D Taylor, J Pullar,
crowd. Early in Term 2, the Pipe Band held its annual fund-raising Ceilidh, F Fierro, R Du Toit
which was well supported and enjoyed. Absent: J McPhail
A highlight of the year for the Pipe Band was to feature as special guests LINDISFARNE COLLEGE CHOIR
in a concert put on by the Hastings City Pipe Band. For our pipers, it was
an invaluable experience to not only perform as a school pipe band but
also to play together with the experienced Hastings City Pipe Band as
a massed ensemble. In Term 4 we travelled to Cambridge to compete
in the Hamilton Gardens contest. Due to very heavy rain, this event was
unfortunately cancelled. We took the opportunity, however, to play our
tunes at various towns on the way home.
Further performances were at the Hastings Blossom Parade, the yearly
Pipe Band Recital and the Performing Arts Concert. Thanks to our tutors
Mr Steve Leigh (bagpipes), Mr Geoff Bainbridge (pipe drums), Mr David
O’Hanlon (pipe drums) and our band manager, Mr Barry Law.
CHOIR Back Row: J Ashby, F Duncan, W Druzianic, J Aarons,
The relatively young Lindisfarne College Choir has continued to O Price-Walker
grow and establish itself in 2017 under the direction of Joseph
Christensen. The highlight of the year was a very good performance Row 2: Dr F Kristensen, W Duncan, R Herring, D Williams,
at the East Coast Big Sing Choir Competition. I received positive K Patel, M Nichols, A Mehta, A Milewski
feedback from numerous choir directors about how great it was
to see our choir back at The Big Sing. It was fantastic to have such Front Row: T Matairangi, J Black, C Walker, O Howlett,
good numbers and enthusiasm from the boys on stage. A Shand, A Majstorovic
The choir also delivered notable performances at Assembly Absent: T Awatere-Reedy, J Cowan, G de Groot,
and at the Performing Arts Concert. Under the guidance of Mr B Thorp-Walker
Christensen, this year’s most experienced singers have formed a
vocal ensemble which is an exciting new group that will continue to
reach new heights in 2018.

I would also like to thank and acknowledge Paul Walsh, who, with his endless hours of help, has been instrumental in many of

most of the games were played in good spirit. This team had
many skilled three-point shooters, but rebounding and driving
to the basket were often the two skills that let the team down,
being unable to convert the ball carrying down the court into
points. Many of the players were very quick on attack, but we
did struggle to get back down the court on defence.
The boys enjoyed all of their games, in particular when facing
the other Year 11 Lindisfarne team. With the structure of the
competition, the boys played off for a place in the bottom four
of the grade. Sadly they lost this game 48-37. However, they
kept positive and structured on the court and were a pleasure

JUNIOR A Basketball grade. In a team that enjoyed good balance across the
court, although lacked in squad size, there was always potential
to succeed. There was height, ball-carrying ability, confidence

occasions to enjoy good wins over many other Hawke’s Bay
schools. It was unfortunate to lose Hawke’s Bay Under 14 rep Jack
Wills part way through the season, but the team refused to allow
this to interfere with their progress. Tommy Fergusson assumed
the captain’s role and also the centre position and was very
effective in doing so. Always competitive, Tommy led by example.
Also contributing well was another Hawke’s Bay rep, Lanson
Randell, who was effective as a point guard, a position that is not
really Lanson’s preferred choice. He teamed up well with Phoenix
Dagg in this role. Phoenix was a skilful and confident guard in all
games. Henry Roil and Noah Morgan were forwards who always

Our intermediate first eleven tried hard during the season
but found success hard to come by. There were some
very close games on Saturday mornings which went down

It was a season of improvement for the
Second XI Football team. With a number
of players returning to the squad from

improvements in skill levels, team cohesion
and overall fitness from our previous

With the exception of two or three games,

defended very well. A new formation
was employed to bolster our midfield,

Pre-season trainings saw 28 of the top Junior (Year 9 and 10)
footballers attending several lunchtime training sessions with the
goal of catching the eye of the selection panel.
After three weeks of lunchtime trials a beep test was conducted to

The results were surprising and a squad of 14 capable footballers
was assembled to take on the province’s best Junior A Football

Year 9 student Sam Wall playing this year. Sam is without question
Hawke’s Bay’s best Under 14 player. He is a young man who
has gained selection into the Central Federation and National
Federation football squads in recent years. In short, Sam was our
most effective player and he often dominated the middle of the
midfield dispossessing our opponents and starting attacks for
the team that often led to goals being scored.

3RD XI
The 3rd XI Hockey team had an enjoyable and successful
2017 season.
Positive and focussed leadership was provided by a superb
group of Year 13 boys in the team: Captain Kadin Good,
Vice-Captain Alec Heighway, the tireless and resolute
Connor Buckley, William Tombleson and Josh Reed. And
finally, our surprise addition to the team, Refin Sephio, new
to hockey, but a fast learner and very committed player.
The Year 12 contingent included our very committed HOCKEY 3RD XI

to the team in Term 3 was Jack Beattie, who proved to
be a determined and tough forward to beat, bringing a Absent: R Sephio
remarkable tenacity to our game.
From Year 11, Hugo Bayley, new to the College this
year, proved to be a skilled and very handy attacker. This
combined well with Francis Del Rosario’s defence skills and
unflappable nature.
The boys’ perseverance and hard work during practices
and every game were important in ensuring our enjoyment of the season and the ongoing development of their skills. Their willingness
to give their all was fundamental to their finishing second in the division, behind HBHS 2nd XI. A big thank you to the boys for their
efforts and making it an enjoyable season. Thanks must also go to the parents who braved the wet and cold to support us. It was most
appreciated.

U15 TANNER CUP
A squad of 14 players was assembled late in the winter
season to compete at the Tanner Cup Tournament in
Tauranga during the Winter Sports Tournament Week. The
Tanner Cup Tournament is relatively new on the winter sports
calendar, starting in 2011, but it has developed into a top-
notch tournament with many of the country’s top hockey
schools taking part. The Lindisfarne College side was made
up of a nucleus of the Colts A team with a number of Year 10
and 11 students from the 2nd XI.
The Lindisfarne College team were up against some
very strong sides that were stacked with talent from their
local regional Under 15 reps and man for man struggled
to compete. As a team, though, Lindisfarne grew and Back Row: B van Etten, R Patel, F May, J Cairns
developed throughout the tournament and played some Row 2: L Hicks, B Sloan, S Bentley, Mr B Adams (Coach)
good hockey at times through the week. Lindisfarne lost to
Wanganui Collegiate and Auckland Grammar in pool play Front Row: B Cox, L Benson, N Sloan (Captain),
(both sides were eventual semi-finalists) to finish bottom of C Turley, J Olsen
their pool. The match against Grammar in particular was a

closely-fought tussle and showed that Lindisfarne were not far off the best teams there, losing 0 – 1 after a scoreless first half.
Lindisfarne then lost to John McGlashan College (2 – 3) and Christ’s College (0 – 1) in crossover matches. On the final day
Lindisfarne played Wellington College and again went down (3 – 5).
In terms of results it was not a successful tournament; however, the boys stuck together and worked well as a team and
improved throughout the tournament. The boys learned a lot from the experience and hopefully will look to build on it for next
season. Thanks to Mr Scott Lawson and Mr Pat Turley who helped to feed and transport the team while they were in Tauranga.
