HOCKEY SPORT REPORTS

COLTS A

The Colts A team began
the season with a series of
qualifying games over two
weeks to see which grade
they would play in for the
season. Three wins, a loss
and two draws saw the team
into Division 3 of the Hawke’s
Bay Secondary Schools
competition. The story of the
season for this team was an
inability to turn field position
and possession into goals.
Despite playing teams that
consisted of mainly senior
students, the Colts A side
managed to compete and
even dominate in a number of
games but goals win games
of hockey and the team just
could not score enough.

MURRAY RICHARDSON
COACH

The Colts C Hockey team played in Boys Division 4 alongside
the Colts B Hockey team and the 4th XI Hockey team and, on
the whole, struggled to compete with teams that were often
older, larger and more skilful. They found themselves defend-
ing for much of the games with little opportunity to attack. As
a result, they suffered some heavy defeats over the course of
the season. Nevertheless, they gave some determined per-
formances and battled to the bitter end.
Players of note included Oliver Newton, the goalkeeper,
who kept a cool head under tremendous pressure and made
many saves which gave the defence the encouragement to
lift their game and continue holding on. He was awarded the
Fair Play award.

Finley Duncan captained the side for much of the season Back Row: B Cheer, F Lys, E Train, O Newton, H Mackie, T Smith,
and played a pivotal role at centre-half marshalling the Mr J Boyd
defence and using his skills to set up the occasional attack.
Front Row: J Williams, J Goodall, F Duncan, J Young, G Story
Absent: J Kennedy

Jasper Williams played right-inner with skill and enthusiasm
trying desperately to break through opposition defences
and score goals. He played his heart out on many occasions but struggled because the team just did not have the depth to
provide support.

Other team members were Ed Train, Joe Kennedy, Jacob Goodall, James Young, Hamish Mackie, Te Haanea Smith, Felix Lys,
Gabriel Story and Ben Cheer. All contributed and gave of their best and kept their heads up throughout the season.

YEAR 7/8 1ST XI

This team was the most successful Intermediate 1stXI I have ever
coached. The boys worked hard for one another and towards
the end of the season I witnessed some of the best team goals I
have ever seen. During the regular season we played well against
most local Intermediate teams and faced Hereworth in the final,
after goalkeeper Corban Watson made several terrific saves in the
penalty shoot-out in the semi-final with Taradale Intermediate. After
a very close tussle, Hereworth were too good and scored the winner
with two minutes left. Achieving a 2 – 1 loss in the final of the Year
7/8 A was gutting, but if you had asked me what we might have
achieved by the end of the season, I wouldn’t have guessed we
would finish second in a ding-dong final.

SAILING

A lot of repairs were carried out on the school
sailing boats and trailers in 2016 so that we
could get them on the water for the boys
to use. With four school boats now up and
functioning, we are getting more boys onto
the water sailing than we managed in 2016.

A vanload of boys leaves after school on
Wednesday to sail the school 420s from the
Napier Sailing Club. With our four school
boats, eight boys are on the water sailing,
with the extras in the rescue boat with Mr
Fritchley. These boys are swapped into
the sailing boats to ensure all boys get an
opportunity to sail and improve.

There is a range of ages and abilities in

the group of boys who sail, but they are all

have a basic understanding of how to sail these boats. There has been a coach available in Term 4 of this year and this will continue into

2018. This coaching will ensure that the boys who sail are in a position to be competitive in upcoming regattas.

There is a really good vibe amongst the boys who sail, which makes looking after them an enjoyable experience. I look forward to
continued progress in the group in 2018.

SPORT REPORTS SQUASH

SENIOR

This year we ran a senior and a
junior squash team that entered the
interschool competition. We trained
on Thursdays at Hastings Squash
Club, which allowed a number of
interested boys to develop their skills
on court, the focus being on shot
variation, positioning on court, and
familiarity with tactical play.

The interschool competition was split L to R: L Taylor, S Hill, J Thompson, B Roberts, Mr D Arnall
into the Napier and Hastings regions,
finals being played based upon
regional ranking. Both the Senior Red
and the Junior Green teams organised
and acquitted themselves well during
the season, both finishing in the top
half of the draw.

It would be fair to say that squash is
currently in the rebuilding phase at Lindisfarne. We are building from the enthusiasm and talent unearthed in the junior ranks
at present, and I am certainly looking forward to a number of very able squash players moving into the senior team in the near
future.

Congratulations to Sam Hill, who beat Jake Thompson in the annual Lindisfarne competition to become this year’s Senior
Squash Champion. At the time of writing the Junior Championship decider is awaiting a final match due to injury.

and Taylor Topp provided some real pace
out wide and were difficult to contain when

week to week and showed an excellent
attitude throughout the season.

Unfortunately, the unsettled weather of
the late summer meant that both trainings and games were disrupted or cancelled due to rain. The team played three matches
for two wins and a loss and showed improvement week to week in the way that they played. All the boys began to develop a

better game understanding and will be better players in the 2017/2018 season because of their effort this year.

RED & WHITE

This team was clearly brimming with talented and confident
players and with no sign of nervous we kicked off the
beginning of the season with a near win against Hastings
Boys’ Senior B. With new-found determination we remained
unbeaten for the rest of the competition. Jordan Hardie is
undoubtedly worth his height in gold as he skilfully counter-
blocked and spiked any incoming sets from the opposing
team. Mason Leef proved himself to be a consistent and level
headed player whose steady serve often led to large gains
on the scoreboard. A tactical highlight for me would have to
be the dives where the boys gallantly plunged rather than
cascaded to the ground to save the ball and continue the rally.

While this was fearlessly executed the success rate proved VOLLEYBALL RED & WHITE
somewhat dubious. Lachlan Cairns and Cole Grace (ironically) Back Row: Mr L Belli, B Hamilton, J Hardie, L Cairns, K Walsh,
