Blank Fixture Plates
(Steel)
Carr Lock® Blank Fixture Plates provide an excellent base
for most dedicated fixtures. These 1.250"-thick steel
plates provide sufficient depth for tapping and other
machining required to mount fixture components, while
also providing excellent rigidity. Each fixture plate has
four mounting holes for Carr Lock® Clamps – two with
liner bushings for fastening with accurate location, the
other two for fastening only. Made in USA.
Modular Fixture Plates
(Steel)
Carr Lock® Modular Fixture Plates are identical to the
Blank Fixture Plates shown above, except with added
multipurpose mounting holes in a standard 2" grid
pattern. Every multipurpose hole has a .5000"-diameter
precision alignment bushing on top, with a 1/2-13
thread below it. Multipurpose holes accept Locating
Screws (with a ground locating diameter), Socket-Head
Cap Screws, clamping studs, and many other threaded
components. Made in USA.
Blank Fixture/Vise Plates

LOCATING AND CLAMPING PRINCIPLES
Locating and clamping are the critical functions of any workholder.
More engineering and machining principles can be found at
carrlane.com under “Engineering Resources”.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF LOCATING
To perform properly, workholders must accurately and consistently
position the workpiece relative to the cutting tool, part after part.
To accomplish this, the locators must ensure that the workpiece is
properly referenced and the process is repeatable.
Figure 1. The twelve degrees of freedom.
Referencing and Repeatability
“Referencing” is a dual process of positioning the workpiece The twelve degrees of freedom in Figure 1 all relate to the central

other hand, is done with locators.
Locators restrict a workpiece’s movement, so they must be strong

“Repeatability” is the ability of the workholder to consistently surface to hold the workpiece. Sufficient force could move the

relative to the tool, and of the tool to the cutter, must be consistent.
To maintain repeatability, the workholder must be designed to
accommodate the workpiece’s locating surfaces.
The ideal locating point on a workpiece is a machined surface.
Machined surfaces permit location from a consistent reference
point. Cast, forged, sheared, or sawed surfaces can vary greatly
from part to part, and will affect the accuracy of the location.

LOCATING GUIDELINES
No single form or type of locator will work for every workholder,
and each locator must be carefully planned into the design.
Positioning Locators
The primary function of any locator is to reference the workpiece
and to ensure repeatability. Locators must be properly positioned
relative to both the workholder and to the workpiece.
• When practical, position locators to contact the workpiece on a

• Machined holes offer complete location with a minimal number
of locators for maximum repeatability. Also good is two machined The manufacturability of a tolerance is critical. A simple hole, for

areas of the workholder, or with coolant-drain areas. Once located, clamping the workpiece in the jig or fixture is
necessary to prevent movement during the operational cycle.
• Avoid redundant location, which restricts the degree of freedom. Clamps must hold the workpiece against its locators, and also
prevent movement of the workpiece. 9
• Prevent improper loading. You can foolproof a workholder with
the location of one or two pins to ensure correct orientation. Clamp Selection Factors
The purpose of clamps is to maintain the position of the workpiece

Positioning the Clamps Alternatively, required clamping force can be calculated based
Position clamps to hold the part against the locators without on calculated cutting forces. A simplified example is shown in
deforming the workpiece. Look for the most rigid points of the Figure 6. The cutting force is entirely horizontal, and no workpiece
workpiece, where they will not interfere with the operation of locators are used, so frictional forces alone resist the cutting forces.
the machine tool, during either the cutting or return cycle. Most
clamps are positioned on or near the top surface of the workpiece.
The clamp must be large enough to properly and safely hold the
workpiece, but small enough to stay out of the way.
With most workholders, this means positioning the clamps directly
over the supporting elements in the baseplate of the workholder,
Figure 4, or against horizontal locators rather than the supports. In
either case, the clamping force must be absorbed by the locating
elements.
Figure 4. Clamps should always be positioned so the clamping force
is directed into the supports or locators. Figure 6. A simplified clamping-force calculation with the cutting
force entirely horizontal, and no workpiece stops (frictional force
resists all cutting forces).
Selecting Clamp Size and Force
Calculations require an approximation of the necessary clamping

force. The table in Figure 5 shows the available clamping forces Another general area of concern is maintaining consistent
for a variety of different size manual clamp straps with a 2-to-1 clamping force. Manual clamping devices can vary in the force
clamping-force ratio. they apply to parts during a production run. Many factors account
for the variation, including clamp position on the workpiece, but
operator fatigue is the most common fault. A good way to control
clamping force is to replace manual clamps with power clamps.
The force generated by power clamps is not only constant but also
adjustable to suit workpiece conditions. Another benefit of power
clamps is their speed of operation: not only are individual power
clamps faster than manual clamps, every clamp is activated at the
same time.

assemblies for large-scale production jigs. The swing-away
arm is precision ground but left unhardened for installing
drill bushings (wear surfaces are hard welded and ground).
The arm swings open a full 120° for loading clearance. The
mounting base is hardened and precisely ground to provide
accurate location. The base includes liner bushings as bearings
for the hardened pivot pin, and a half-turn latch screw. Available
in three sizes.
