ABURI GIRLS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PRESBYTERIAN HEAD MISTRESS MESSAGE BEPOW SO HANN! NYAME NE HENE! CONGRATULATIONS WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE. I t is with immense joy and gratitude that I reach out to you today on the occasion of the 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day and the Silver Jubilee of our meticulous ladies of AOGA 1998 Year Group. In 1998, twenty-five years ago, you left the walls of this school after completing your various courses of study. You went out there with no knowledge about what the world holds for you, yet you stepped out there and have travelled life’s journey with its numerous challenges as career women, community and national leaders as well as wives and mothers. By the Grace of God, drawing on the values acquired in this school, you have succeeded in your endeavors and made our school proud. Twenty-five year on and our 1998-year group of AOG are all grown up beautiful women and giving back to your alma mater in a special way. I must confess that on all the occasions that we met to discuss your project; from it selecting to it to execution, I saw your dedication and commitment to the betterment of our school. When you decided to refurbish the school’s recreation center into an ultra-modern conference center with a kitchenette and washrooms to be fit the status of our prestigious school you worked with the time lines you set with determination and dedication. In these hard times when businesses are still recovering from the post-covid period and other current world order setbacks, raising funds is by no means an easy task. The road may have been rough and bumpy, but today you can proudly say that ‘you made it’ you have done a yeoman’s job and I say Bravo. I thank your group for honoring the school’s tradition by executing your legacy project. I pray that successive generation of students and teachers make good use of the recreational center. On behalf of the Board of Governors the staff and students, the Parent Association and the entire Aburi Girls’ family, I salute the Aoga 1998-year group and say a big thank you. May the next 25 years hold even better prospects for you all and may your lights always shine brightly!!! Bepow So Hann. GOODWILL MESSAGE FROM THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION TO THE ABURI PRESBYTERIAN GIRLS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR 77TH. SPEECH AND PRIZE-GIVING DAY CELEBRATION. THEME: STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP FOR EDUCATION, AN INVESTMENT IN GHANA’S FUTURE. ‘Bepow so Hann Ampa’, Nyame ne Hene! As the accolade goes. While the Presbyterian Missionaries sought to enlighten the African personality in Ghana through quality education delivery, they came to realize the key role the girl-child education could play to achieve that. This culminated in the huge investments made at the time to bring us this far today. 14 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
No, the Girl-Child could not and cannot be left behind as we forge for wholistic transformation of the society. As a Presbyterian and a woman, I am very proud to be associated with the 77th milestone chalked by this noble institution. The quality of education and training gained here cannot be overemphasized. Girls education and training require specialized skills and hard-work on the part of teachers and caregivers in order to get this stage of excellence. On this score, I say ‘ayekoo’! to our hardworking staff for this feat. It is an undeniable fact that good academic performance is a function of hard-work and good moral standards in which ‘ABUGIS’ stands tall. Your rich experience with the training and development of the girl-child makes it virtually remote for a girl to return from your soil void, kudos! The strategic investments made by the diverse stakeholder community has been so supportive of the vision. The investments made in these young ones today is key to the future growth and development of this country. Mindful of this, parents and guardians have not relented on supporting the school in the diverse ways possible. In their bid to give back to society, old girls have not also forgotten the school and keep augmenting what is available from the state. On this occasion I say ‘ayekoo’ to these old girls who have not forgotten their alme mater and are making relentless efforts to grow the school. On this 77th. Speech and Prize Giving Day celebration, I laud the collaborative efforts of all our teaming stakeholders, not forgetting Nananom, Institutional collaborators, individuals, past and present Headmistresses and all whose support has brought us this far, ‘ayekoo’ . it is my hope that these investments being made will yield the desired dividends in the nearest future to the individual, the community and the state at large. ‘Let’s invest today into tomorrow’s development’. Once again, congratulations to the Honorable members of the Board, the P.A., the Headmistress and staff and the entire students body. SPEECH DELIVERED BY MALAIKA SACKEY, THE SENIOR SCHOOL PREFECT OF ABURI GIRLS’ SHS, AT THE 77TH ANNIVERSARY, SPEECH AND PRIZE GIVING DAY CELEBRATION ON 11TH NOVEMBER 2023 AT THE ASIBEY HALL The Chairperson, Venerable Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dignified Members of the School Board of Governors, Esteemed Guest of Honour, Dignified Special Guest Nananom, Headmistress and Assistants, Heads and Assistant Heads of Invited Institutions, Industrious Members of Staff, Reputable Old Girls, Proud Parents, Fellow Students, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, I deem it a privilege to stand before you today as the Senior School Prefect and SRC President to address this august house on all that has transpired this academic year. Today, we gather not just to celebrate academic achievements but to acknowledge the dedication, resilience and growth that define our school community. Induction On Sunday, 27th of August 2023, forty-seven (47) young ladies pledged to carry on the mantle of leadership from our predecessors. Even though this proves to be a daunting task, we know by the grace of God and support from Management and our dear teachers, we will be able to render our faithful service to this noble institution. Also, I must say since we took over, the work has not been easy but with the help of my ever-capable 16 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
assistants, Miss Elsa Ewuradwoa Hagan and Miss Kezia Nordziko Bagida, we are forging on. “The horse is prepared for the race, but it is the Lord that showeth mercy” – Proverbs 21:31. Achievements Chairperson, Aburi Girls continues to be the light set on the hill. This academic year has seen many clubs participate in competitions and win so many awards. The Young Writer’s and Debaters Club have achieved major feats in their field. The club competed in the 2023 High School Moot Court competition– an event aimed to cultivate a deeper understanding of legal principles and foster excellent oral advocacy skills– and won the gold medal. Miss Yomle Sika Padi Narh was adjudged the best orator for the competition. In the year under review, three of their predecessors also had the opportunity of being part of the Ghana Debate team and and competed in the World Debate Championship in the US. Also, the Drama Club attended the Eastern Regional Broadway Theatre Festival and won the first position. They will soon be attending the National competition and hope to bring the trophy home. Ladies and Gentlemen, early July, our WASSCE candidates from the Clothing and Textiles department showcased their dexterity and creativity on the runway as part of their assessment for the 2023 WASSCE. During the design of their project, they made garments using top notch fabrics to make intricate designs with the theme “Red-Carpet”. This wowed both the school and influenced the social media, catching the attention of the nation at large. I am sure many of you may have come across it. With these, we can see future top notch fashion designers who are poised in making renowned statements and impact in the world of fashion. We continue to encourage the continuing students to keep the legacy left by their predecessors. The Chairperson, delving into the field of sports, Aburi Girls continues to push boundaries. On 13th May 2023, the school’s sports team attended the Triangular Games at Methodist Girls’ SHS where they placed 1st in basketball and 2nd in Football and Volleyball. The Cadet Corps also participated in the 6th March Anniversary parade competition and won the overall best school. Ladies and Gentlemen, through the Student Representative Council, students have been provided with greater access to information and decision-making across all aspects of the school. The SRC for 2022/2023 successfully portrayed education through entertainment during the SRC Week Celebration. At the moment, Aburi Girls’ SRC can arguably be said to be one of the best in Ghana as it has not failed to portray inclusivity and holistic education to students. On behalf of my prefects, I congratulate every club, society and the sports team for the amazing work done. “Memento audere semper, remember to always dare.” You dared to be pacesetters and certainly made us proud. Chairperson, the school has over the years produced an enviable record in academics and is poised to hold on to this feat. In view of that, various pragmatic measures have been taken by Management to ensure that we excel in our academics. For instance, “Operation Excellence 2024”, which seeks to ensure that we acquire more ‘As’ in the upcoming WASSCE has been initiated by Management. Hence, our teachers are also leaving no stone unturned when it comes to teaching and learning. Their punctuality, patience, and frequent tests are a 17 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
proof to the dedication and service they provide for students in this school and for this, we want to say “a big thank you”. Ladies and Gentlemen, as the saying goes, a healthy body lives in a healthy mind; as a result, frequent house inspections are conducted– this includes the inspection of the compound and dormitories. We can all bear witness that all these have contributed immensely to our education. It is in this light that I, on behalf of the 2023/2024 batch of students, assure the headmistress (Mrs. Cynthia Anim), staff, parents, and all Old Girls present of an increase in the number of 8As in next year’s WASSCE. Ladies and Gentlemen, posterity will judge me if I do not mention the immense contributions by our esteemed Old Girls. On behalf of the whole student body, I want to thank you for your enduring contributions in numerous ways that have woven the rich tapestry of our school success. Today, we stand on the shoulders of your achievements, and we are profoundly grateful for the legacy you’ve bestowed upon us. We came to meet a school of high moral prestige, discipline and academic excellence, and we promise to continue this legacy. Problems Despite the enormous successes chalked, our dear school still grapples with a few issues in terms of infrastructure, food, facilities, and others. Currently, the school is facing: 1. Insufficient food supply at the dining hall 2. Leaking roofs in the classrooms and dining hall 3. Inadequate chairs for social gatherings and programmes 4. Deteriorated dining hall and inadequate tables and benches in the hall (just to mention a few). These are quite unfortunate situations for the entire school. We therefore plead with all stakeholders to come to our aid. Every contribution counts. The Chairperson, I believe that if we all come together as one, we can continue to improve upon the legacy and good works of the school. Together, we can surmount any problem that comes our way, so that our dear school would continue to be a beacon of hope for the country and the world at large. Chairperson, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you for your attention. Long live Aburi Girls! BEPOW SO HANN! NYAME NE HENE! 18 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day

AOGA 98 HISTORY OF THE ABURI GIRLS 1998 YEAR GROUP (AOGA 98) On 31st January 1996, 288 young girls were enrolled in the then Aburi Girls Secondary School. These young girls were ecstatic to have been admitted to this reputable institution and were eager to live their lives on campus. This was the first time many of them would be experiencing a boarding school environment. The group was a unique batch as they were not only intelligent but were very energetic and possessed diverse skills and talents to add to the diversity of the school. This group of girls was the last to encounter the last batch of young women who were in the O/A-level system as well as those in the newly introduced Senior Secondary School (SSS) system. They, therefore, had the privilege of interacting with students in the “old regime” as well as the “new regime”. In their days on campus, they had the rare opportunity to experience a school “run” by a school prefect in the sixth form and then a school prefect in SSS 3 after the sixth formers left school. Before the admission of these girls, classes in the school were typically from A to D, but was expanded to G, introducing four additional general arts classes, due to the large intake of students. They were the only SSS group to study Traditional Religious Studies apart from the “O” and “A” Level system. The 1998 girls were resilient and resolute – the only group in the school who successfully pulled off the boycott of Daavi’s food to get her to improve her customer service. Daavi was a popular food seller at the school. The boycott succeeded in making her more pleasant towards her “illegal customers” (given she was selling “underground”). A well-detailed plan was hatched, and the boycott went on peacefully and “underground” such that the schools’ authorities did not get a wing of it. Fun fact: the 1998 girls also ended up with free food for that day as Daavi could not just discard the food. The girls of the 1998 year group again pulled off the most spectacular and widely attended funfair in the year 2000. This fair had various fun aspects including the horror tower, which was staged in the tower on the main compound, and a variety show amongst other things. Many schools from different regions attended and refused to leave the school’s compound when the festivities were over. They simply did not want the fun to end. The headmistress at the time, Mrs. Grace Ansah–Otu (may her soul rest in peace), was so enraged that she banned funfairs altogether in the school. At this point, we apologize to the generations after us, if this ban has still not been lifted. Yes, it is entirely our fault and so we apologize…. Profusely. We were also the first batch to hold “real life party politics”, where the school allowed Form 2 girls to form political parties, campaign effectively and convince the rest of the school to vote them into power in order to rule the school for two weeks. Oh yes, Form 3 girls were under our reign in those weeks. We had such fun forming our political alliances, composing songs for our parties, and couching political slogans. This exercise brought out our creativity, instilled leadership qualities in us, 35 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
and improved our planning and organizational skills as well as our public speaking skills. We had a lot of fun and suffered immense nostalgia (massive FOMO) when we watched our juniors undertake this same exercise while we were in Form 3. In our usual outlier style, we created our own party we called the “Skeleton Party” to put a little spice in the political season as it was dragging quite a bit. Our party created the desired result and we enjoyed our juniors as they stepped up and gave us a real political season to our delight. The school, with its Presbyterian discipline imbibed in the AOGA 98 group a sense of hard work, perseverance, tenacity, and the love and fear of God. As such, it comes as no surprise that these ladies have excelled in a variety of chosen careers. They have excelled in academia, in both the public and private sectors, in Ghana and abroad, and can boast of some of the most influential entrepreneurs in Ghana. Our group was referred to as the “jubilee babies” as our admittance into the school coincided with the 50th year of the establishment of the school. Although this era brought with it a lot of cleaning activities to get the school in pristine condition, we were excited to celebrate with old girls from around the globe on the day of the 50th Anniversary. We were also highly amused when we saw the old girls gleefully scream “jubileeee” during the candlelight procession, and during their tour of the school to locate their former dorms and beds. Little did we know that we would be equally excited, if not more, to return to this campus, 25 years after graduating from the school. In 2008 (ten years after completing the school), one of our classmates Christabel Dadzie had the foresight to bring members together, in an effort to start thinking about our Legacy Project, which would happen several years later. The first group of attendees were Christabel Dadzie, Amma Osei, Cassandra Amartey, Doreen Koranteng, Demi 36 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
Priscilla Letsa Duah, Naana Biney, Nana Afriyie Duah, Naa Adjeley and Cynthia Asante. It was tough achieving this as most members had lost touch and were stationed in different parts of the world, but perseverance and sisterhood won the day. Thereafter, a membership web page was launched by Nana Efa Attafuah, which helped to further galvanize participation. A couple years later, some more effort was put into bringing members together as the majority of the first group of girls had to travel outside the country to pursue other laurels. The second group consisted of Jamila Malik, Christabel Dadzie, Ruth Anoff, Amma Osei, Ama Kwofie (nee Agnes Nuamah), and Naana Biney. Subsequent meetings had Rebecca Naa Korkoi Aryeetey, Rosemond Osei Agropa, Eunice Asante Yeboah, Regina Baah – Mantey, Fiona Enndman, Priscilla Sakyi, Akosua Anin and Doreen Koranteng in attendance. With a slow start where most meetings were held with only six or seven members, the numbers improved, and on 13th December 2023, when the 1998 Aburi Old Girls Association was formally formed, a constitution was duly passed. There were over 40 members in attendance on that day. The Association grew from strength to strength as we executed various activities such as picnics and other get-togethers to enable us to reconnect and bond. We have supported each other in good times (weddings, naming ceremonies, and birthdays) and in bad times (funerals of close relatives, health issues, and other grave issues life generally throws at us). We were shaken to the core when basking in the euphoria of our newfound camaraderie and sisterhood, the icy hands of death cast its shadow on some of our sisters. We mourned the fallen angels of our association and commiserated and supported their families in any way that we could. We remember the memories of Beacons Shirley Opare Asamoah, Samira Sidiq, Stephanie Amponsah, Dorcas Dufu, Emily Dontoh and Nana Ama Siriboe. May their souls remain at peace in the bosom of the Lord, until we meet again. Through these experiences, we found inner strength and a sense of dedication, and a renewed passion to work together as one unit to leave behind a legacy that would impact the lives of girls who attend school. We are delighted and proud that through teamwork, dedication, sisterhood, and passion, we have not only accomplished the dream that started in 2008 but have also proven that women do bear each other up and that together we are stronger and able to achieve anything we put our minds to. The 1998 year group hands over its legacy project today 10th November 2023, but will continue to uphold the values instilled in us by the school and hold on to the bond that this project has fostered amongst us. Address by the 1998 Year Group President Dr Demi Priscilla Letsa Duah I am deeply honoured to be part of AOGA 98. Truly a group of strong, determined, powerful, passionate, resourceful and capable women. As we return to Aburi Girls Secondary School (as it was referred to 25 years ago), the school that moulded our lives, we are flooded with many found memories of our time here. In November 2022, AOGA 98 were handed the torch by our predecessors, AOGA 97, to continue the good work and tradition of giving back to our alma mater. In leaving a legacy, we choose to renovate and refurbish a building here on the Irene Anderson compound, formerly known as the Recreation Center. Our goal was to transform this building into a multi-purpose meeting/ gathering space for the school to utilize in various forms. Indeed that journey has not been without struggle and difficulty. Our carefully throughout plans were significantly impacted by the unpredictable inflow of finances and the current economic conditions in our country. In the face of all these constraints, AOGA 98 has persevered and persisted. These challenges brought to the fore the issues related to the way and manner in which old students year groups will proceed in the future to better support the school, and thus build a stronger bond. Going forward, I firmly believe that AOGA Global, various year groups and the school administration and board will determine the best way forward for all. The theme for the 77th Speech & Prize Giving Day and our 25th anniversary after completing Aburi Girls Secondary School, is “Strategic Partnerships for Education; Investing in Ghana’s Future”. This theme is related to our expectation and hope that a student of Aburi Girls will receive an education that goes beyond the classroom and the school’s walls to one that aids a child’s ability to create and foster relationships will help them find even greater success in their professional and personal lives. Understanding the importance of strategic partnerships early on will offer invaluable opportunities for our learners. This is the message and understanding we wish to offer through our engagement with the present students. There cannot be silent gratitude, so with a very loud voice, I wish to express our deepest gratitude to friends, family, various donors, partners, individuals, sister and brother schools, and other AOGA year groups who offers financial support, pieces of advice and direction. We are here celebrating with you because you carried our flag and championed our cause. May our gratitude generate blessings for you all now and years to come. To my group of amazing, powerful, generous, and beautiful ladies of AOGA 98, you have proven your worth! Indeed, this entire period has been a valuable and enriching experience for us all, and we are better for it. We have shown grit, dedication, togetherness and here we stand in true testament to the power of TEAMWORK. Congratulations AOGA 98! 43 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day

So many things have happened Since they were called away. So many things to share with them Had they been left to stay. And now on this reunion day, Memories do come our way. Though absent, they are ever near, Still missed, remembered, always dear. AOGA 98Angels STEPHANIE AMPONSAH SAMIARA SIDIQI NANA AMA SIRIBOE EMILY DONTOH ESTHER KROW SHIRLEY OPARE - ASAMOAH DORCAS DUFU
