THE LEGACY PROJECT Members of the 1998 year group (AOGA 98) have had the desire to leave a legacy and honour our alma mater for the role it has played in our lives, ever since graduation. AOGA 98, therefore, approached the school’s authority in the wake of its 25th Anniversary to enquire about the school’s needs. The group was given a list of priority projects to choose from. Out of this list, AOGA 98 settled on rebuilding and refurbishing the school’s recreational center and transform it into a Student Innovation Resource Center. This building, at the time AOGA 98 visited in January 2022, was in a deplorable state with a badly leaking roof, a decayed ceiling, and exposed electrical wires, amongst other things. The building had not seen much renovation since the school took it over from the previous Methodist Training College. Members believed that this situation could be turned around to transform the building into a meeting and retreat space for the school’s board and management to organize school strategy and partnership programming, engage key stakeholders and serve as a multipurpose room for staff and teachers’ design thinking and innovative capacity building to enhance relevant and practical education transfer to students. 53 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
With its multipurpose use, the space can be converted to accommodate student learning with its fully fitted modern technology to ensure that interactions are engaging, interactive, and increase student participation and understanding. AOGA believes that educational governance and teaching have evolved and that a holistic approach where governance meets innovation is a good way to educate the intelligent young ladies who have found themselves within the walls of this noble institution. It is our hope that the Resource Center helps the school in diverse ways and enables it to equip the current and future students with the relevant skills and knowledge to take their rightful places in society. Edinburgh house cannot be hidden as it sits radiantly in the middle of the main compound of Aburi Girls Senior High School and it is opposite the main gate and the administration block. It was easy to get to our house as it was well-positioned. It also housed the most important “asset” of the school – the Edinburgh tank. Students from far and near came to our tank to fetch water for use. Our house was a peaceful place for the most beautiful girls in the school … yes the peacocks. They would strut behind the house and sometimes give us quite a display during “Silence” (siesta time) by proudly spreading their colourful tails. This house had no idea what would hit it in the year 1996 as “chorch” and sweet little girls were assigned to it as was customary at the beginning of each academic year. This batch brought in a new vibe and made the house quite lively. Hitherto, Edinburgh did not do so well in sports, entertainment, and the flower garden competition. With the admittance of these girls into the house, they were able to practice without much supervision and create good choreographies, dramas, and other EDINBURGH HOUSE – HOUSE OF THE HIGHEST ECHELON entertainment assignments that were given to the houses during inter-house competitions. Before long, Edinburgh House was constantly second in all inter-house entertainment competitions as Irene Anderson House was admittedly a formidable team. 58 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
With the can-do spirit of the ‘98 girls and their passion and mad love for the house, Edinburgh also excelled in sports and even produced a sports prefect in their final year. Some 98 girls loved to garden and brought that skill into tending our garden thereby leading us to move up in the ranks during the garden competition. Edinburgh house ALWAYS won the Lady’s Cup. This cup was awarded to the best-behaved house that spoke vernacular infrequently. This was not surprising as Edinburgh House could boast of many beautiful, well-mannered, eloquent, and emotionally intelligent girls with a good sense of decorum. The girls from Edinburgh were very intelligent and produced two of the three contestants for the National Science and Maths Quiz. This competition at the time was known as the Brilliant Science and Maths Quiz and these contestants were Rita Acheampong Oti and Millicent Owusu - Kumih (nee Asah Kissiedu). Before them, our senior Vera Amon from Edinburgh House had also been a contestant in this competition. The ’98 girls produced four prefects namely the two house captains Annabel Orko and Jamila Malik, one sports prefect, Amma Osei and one dining hall prefect Gloria Denkyi. Edinburgh House also had the fewest number of occupants and had the neatest bathrooms. Despite the few numbers, it had a large area to work on and we worked hard to keep the main compound clean as most of it fell under our work territory. We were fond of the turtles and kept the turtle pond tidy. We hated it anytime we had to weed behind the house because the grass was quite tough and we called it “abonsam abodwes3”. so sometimes we just held onto the grass and cut it. We would lament the fact that we weeded with cutlasses while the labourers used lawnmowers. We however bonded over those lamentations and sang and danced during such times. Edinburgh had 6 dorms and four study rooms. They used to be called Up1, Up2, Up3, Down 1, Down 2, and Down 3. We however renamed them after flowers and had the following names: Frangipani, Petunia, Periwinkle, Wisteria, Daffodil and Tulip. Although the ladies were quite mellow, we had our moments and in those boisterous times, our housemistresses Miss Osei and Mrs Mabel Boah would look on bewilderedly with Ms Osei asking whether we were boys or girls. It was a common sight to see dormmates converse irrespective of their class and laugh heartily. By the time we got to the final year, we were convinced that Edinburgh House was the benchmark by which other houses were measured and took the title “the House of the highest Echelon” unto ourselves. We were intelligent, well–mannered, somewhat athletic, had a good sense of humour, decent dancers, and quite well-rounded in all spheres of life. We were simply every teacher’s ideal student. Not troublesome but not boring. We loved Edinburgh House because it was neat, peaceful, had good, caring, and some really interesting people. Edinburgh girls smiled a lot and made everyone around them happy. This is the house we love to bits!!! I was one of the two hundred and eighty – eight (288) girls admitted into Aburi Girls Secondary School (now Aburi Girls Senior High School) in 1996. After sleeping in a strange bunk bed, attending morning assembly, and the orientation session; the latter was held at the Assembly Hall on the main compound (now Asempa House), I checked the class list and I had been assigned class One “c”. I entered the marked class and sat with the familiar faces I had met the previous day. Many thought like me and before long, we had sat and aligned with our “safety nets”. We sat next to the girl we went to school with, or one whose school was in the same community. We therefore had fragments, as girls who went to schools located in Accra huddled together in one row, while others who went to schools in Kumasi, Koforidua, and Aburi were in other rows. A reshuffle was done after a week of class, to reassign the classes. Most of us in the “original” C class remained and very few were taken to other classes. Before our time, the C class had been reserved for girls who undertook economics, and over the years, all C classes had adopted the slogan “ C – Cons ….. Power !!!!”. With this reshuffle, however, some of us remained in the C class although we did not have economics as an elective subject. We rather had the core subjects as a class, and in a true “Yankee” fashion, stepped out to other classes to undertake our elective subjects. Our year group was a unique batch as we started many “firsts” at the school. We wore skirts like the sixth-form girls and would wear white shirts when we got to form three. Our class was very “colourful” as we had girls with different personalities, talents, and massive energy. We had very intelligent girls and half the time I wondered whether I had been admitted wrongly since these girls operated on another level. The class had extremely talented ladies who always performed for their houses during entertainment. Our class had girls like Edith Kwakye–Maafo (nee Danyagre), Ancilla Sam, and Fiona Dawsonn–Andoh (nee Enndman) who could sing and cause the heavens to descend. The first time Edith sang, I thought, errr is that not a white girl in black skin? I had never seen or heard an African with an opera voice hence my confusion. Even at that young age, Edith and Ancilla had begun singing with professionals like Black Heritage (an acapella group) and Minister Danny Nettey of blessed memory. There were some pretty tall girls too like Jamila Malik and Ama Abrafi Agyeman ( nee Marielaure Agyeman). Ama went on to become the first runner-up at the second Face of Africa Pagent and was adjudged the Anglo Face of Gold at this pageant. She has modeled with the heavyweights in that industry and has graced the catwalks of many fashion weeks around the world, including having giant images of herself at Times Square in New York, for many years. There were the eloquent ones like Helena Buabeng and Rosemary Baah Tosu. It is no wonder that Rosemary became a lawyer and is currently a High Court Judge with Helena moonlighting on TV shows with her eloquence and multilingual prowess. We had the smartest and youngest in the year group like Susanna Ofori, Priscilla Abaya and Thelma Abbey and the audacious, vivacious, and largerthan-life personalities like Nana Akyaa Mensah (nee Naa Yaa Akyaa Kwakye), Nana Adoma Amoah, Jemima Owusu, Amy Dowuona (nee Andoh) and Eunice Asante Yeboah. These ladies have utilised their passion quite well and have excelled in their various fields. Others like Adjoa Fynn were just too smart. I used to think of her as nimble and smart. We had cool, calm, and collected ladies who were by no means pushovers but could stand toe to toe with vivacious personalities. It is interesting to see Elsie Nunoo, Esther Osew Addison, Dulcie Quist, Florence Acheampong, Harriet Cudjoe, Sandra Osei Owusu, Yvonne A. Ayeh, and Dorothy Addo maintain their cool demeanour. They have attained their rightful places in the world and have allowed their light to shine in their corners. I remember our black beauties Lois Komfa and Stephanie Amponsah (may her gentle soul rest in peace) and their dimples. Ruth Asare, Rebecca Angmor, Gloria Acheampong, Jocelyn Mensah Ankrah, Linda Odame, and Helen Gyimah had the sweetest smiles that could melt any heart. How could I forget that Evelyn Zogblah aka Lyn Zo was the head of the “laughing jackals”? Her laughter could lift any weary spirit. The girls in this class just had the X factor and produced a large number of the school’s prefects for the year 1998. Two out of the three School Prefects were from our class (Vida Tawia and Edith Kwakye – Maafo). One entertainment prefect (Ama Afriyie Kwofie, nee Agnes Nuamah), two dining hall prefects (Jemima Owusu and Gloria Denkyi), both House Captains of Edinburgh House (Annabel Orko and Jamila Malik), one library prefect (Helena Buabeng), one sports prefect (Naomi Ayikwei), one Irene Anderson House Captain (Harriet Cudjoe) and several compound prefects. We were not only intelligent and full of life. We were pretty too. Ancilla Sam won the Ms. Nino pageant in the form one year and Jamila Malik won the Miss IEP crown, which was also known as Ms Abugiss. Our class started on shaky grounds because we stuck to familiar faces and maintained cliques. We were talkers and were therefore punished a lot because of our noisemaking. We would blame this noise on each other and cause an even worse raucous in the process. This did not last long as we got to know each other and bonded better. This positivity did not, however, help with the noise situation as our level of buoyancy only tripled. I remember when we giggled throughout prep one night to the extent that our prep supervisor punished us and asked us to kneel. This somehow made the situation a bit worse as the giggles turned into muffled laughter. The teacher on duty was upset and asked us to stand and raise our hands. We obliged and strangely enough, this erupted into full-blown laughter. The headmistress at the time (Mrs Ansah – Otu) who just had to do random rounds that night chanced upon us and asked us to move onto the upper court to continue our punishment. We filed out obediently and obliged but immediately she left, my mates and I miraculously thought it wise to point fingers at each other for the aggravated punishment while others just continued with the laughter. This caused so much noise that the teacher on duty gave up on us and asked us to go back to our classroom. He was very certain that even our tables and chairs would disturb the whole school when we left to go to our houses after prep. We had good times in class and gave each other stiff competition for prizes. We played hard, laughed harder, and studied even harder (despite 63 ABURI GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77th Speech and Prize Giving Day
the noise). I do not know how we managed that. Up until today, I have wondered how we managed to excel in our exams, with the noise. We had a gossip column written by “Lyric”. We still do not know who this girl is. She put out “filla” and a “gbogbash” list at the back of the class. The girl with the most “gbobash” words was crowned at the end of the term. “Gbogbash” is simply mispronounced words or wrong tenses used by a member of the class. It did not matter where those words were uttered, Lyric found out and added it to the list. As time went on, other members would add on if a member dared to “gbaa”. I remember our journey from the main compound to the Irene Anderson compound and the friendships and bonds we formed over the years. Life in the C Class was the absolute best and I remember all the jokes, songs, and heated and animated debates we had like yesterday. I remember the girls we were then, eager to help and defend each other, and how quick we were to tease each other. I can only be grateful to the Almighty for how far he has brought us as women. It could only have been God. Seeing the achievements of these ladies shows me that the Presbyterian discipline and the love of God imbibed in us, the hard work instilled in us, and of course, the C Cons power, has molded us into formidable women today. From teens to youthful years, from young years to womanhood, from aspirations to dreams, from dreams to achievements ………. these are the warm thoughts I carry in my heart about my beloved class. You entered the gates of Abugiss as Form 1 girls in 1995 when we were in Upper 6 as the final batch of the O’ and A’level system. The 1994.96 sisters are proud of the women, mothers, wives and professionals that you have become. Our relationship started off as seniors and juniors, but we are now friends, sisters and colleagues. The theme for your celebration, ‘Strategic Partnerships For Education: An Investment In Ghana’s Future’ speaks to the vision of our great school which begun with the Scottish missionaries in 1946 and has been well translated into the strategic local partnership between the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Government of Ghana through the Ghana Education Service, AOGA, parents and teachers for the benefit of students both current and future. Message from the Planning Committee Chairperson Jamila Malik Arthur The 1998-year group (AOGA ’98) has been very enthusiastic about giving back to society and particularly the school that played a fundamental role in shaping our minds, attitudes, and ultimately making us who we are today. Members have since 2014 initiated various ways to raise funds in preparation to undertake whatever project would be assigned to us by the school, as tradition demands. It is interesting to note that our group started meeting and putting ideas together even before we knew what would be assigned to us. It has been an honour serving as the Planning Committee Chair. I must say that members of AOGA ‘98 made it easy to lead because we are passionate, energetic, driven, and goal-oriented. In difficult times when it seemed like we could not achieve our goal, members rallied around each other and came up with diverse and innovative ways to surmount our challenges. It has been a delight watching the group work in concert to achieve this feat and an even greater joy to watch the deepening of existing relationships and the formation of new ones during this process. AOGA ‘98 took on the refurbishment of a Resource Center but ended up redeveloping the dilapidated structure into an ultra-modern building which is fit for purpose in imparting knowledge and skills to young minds in this fast-paced era. In addition to this, the group has provided a career library to assist the students in acquiring knowledge on careers they can pursue, including those outside the scope of traditionally known careers. It is our hope and prayer that this building enhances the school’s performance in all aspects. We hope also that in undertaking this project, the current and future students at the school will learn from the tenacity, dedication, and passion we have exhibited and help them in their journeys in life. We also hope that the career library will empower the students to pursue cutting-edge careers. We leave this legacy with much joy and pride to the glory of God and trust that it will assist the student body, the governing board, the teaching and non–teaching staff, as they work to uphold the ethos of the school.
