"Good-day," I said. "Good-day,"

he answered; "is it possible that you do
not recognise me?"

Then I looked at him closely and saw he
was my brother

It would but renew my trouble to tell of all
the misfortunes

I examined my accounts

But they came to me repeatedly

After two months' sailing we arrived at a
seaport

where we disembarked and did a great
trade

Then we bought the merchandise of the
country

beautiful though poorly dressed woman

I saw two black dogs who came

to meet me with sorrowful faces
ْ‫ْم كّ َِا مِ ََ مَي مِ َْ لِ ََ لّ مْ َح مَّ ََ لّ م‬

I was much astonished
‫َْ َِ لَ مأ لَ ََ َُ لُ لٍ ََ مَّ ةَأ‬

but the fairy who reappeared said to me
‫َْ مَ يْ أ لْ مِ يَ يّ ًَ أْي مَي ََا َْ ََ لٍ أْ رَ كَْ ََ َْا َْ لٍ ْمي‬

"Do not be surprised to see these dogs
ِ‫ََ ََ ََ ََا ََِ مِ كَ لُ َّ مً َُ مَ مِ أ لْ مَ ََ م‬

they are your two brothers.
ُ‫كُ َِا أ لَ َْأ‬

I have condemned them to remain for ten
years in these shapes

ِ‫َْ َِ لَ َح ََ لِ كٍ ََ َِ لّ مَ لِ مِا لْ َِ َِا مِ ْم كِ يَ مً ََ لُ مَ َْ ََ َْأ مٍ مِي َُ مَ مِ أ لَْ لُ ََا م‬

Then having told me where I could hear
َِ َِ ْ‫كَ يِ ََ لَ َِ ََ لَ مَي ََ لّ َْ كّ لِ مَ كَ مَي ََ لْ ََ ل‬

news of her, she vanished

Then the third old man

made the Genie the same request as the
other two had done

and the Genie promised him the last third
of the merchant's punishment
َ‫َْ َْ ََ يَِك أ لْ مِ يَ ري مِاْ رَِك مُ أ لَْ مَّ مَ مِ لْ مَ َِا مِ أْ يَا مِ م‬

if his story surpassed both the others

So he told his story to the Genie
ِ‫ْم ََْم َُ ََ لَ َِ ََ أ لْ مِ يَ يي مْ يَ ََ ك‬

so that the Genie was astonished
‫َح يَى ََ لَ َُ َِ أ لْ مِ يَ يي‬

and said to the third old man
ُ‫َْ َْا َِ ْمِ يَ كِ مِ أْ يَاْم م‬

"I will give up to you the third part of the
merchant's punishment

"َ‫َْ لْ ٍَ َكَ مطّ قُ أ لْ كِ لَ َِ أْ يَاْم َُ مِ لْ كَِكْ َِ مً أْ يَا مِ م‬
He ought to thank all three of you

ًَ ََ ََ َ‫َّ مِ كِ ََ لْ َّ لُ كَ ََ كَ كِ أْ ي‬

for having interested yourselves in his
favour

ِ‫مَْ يَ كَ لِ كِ لَ ََ رِْ َْ مِ م‬

But for you, he would be here no longer."
َْ ِ‫ َْ لْ َّ كَْ َْ كُ ََا َِ لَ ََ أ ل‬، َُ َْ ً‫" َْ مَ لْ مِاْ يَ لْ َِ م‬.

So saying, he disappeared
‫ أ لَ ََ ََى‬، ِ‫ْم ََْم َُ َِّكْ ك‬

to the great joy of the company
ً‫ْم ََ لَ َح مً أْ يُ مَ ََ مً أ لْ ََ مَّ َِ م‬

The merchant did not fail to thank his
friends

ِ‫َْ لِ َّ ََ َْأ َْ أْ يَا مِ كَ ََ لْ كُ لَ مَ ََ لَ مَ َْا مِ م‬

and then each went on his way

The merchant returned to his wife and

The Story of the Greek King

and the Doctor Douban

In the country of Zouman, in Persia
َِ‫مِي مِ ََ مَ كَْ َِا َْ مِي مِ ََ مَ َِا م‬

there lived a Greek king, This king was a
leper

‫ كُ ََا َُ ََا َِ َِِم رُ كّْ ََا مَ مي‬. ََ ََ ِ‫ََا َْ َُ ََأ أ لْ َِِم كُ ََ ل‬

and all his doctors had been unable to
cure him

ِ‫َْ َْ لِ َّ ََ َِ يَ لْ َِ مِّ كِ ََ مط يِا مِ مِ مِ لْ مَ ََ مِ م‬

when a very clever doctor came to his
court

ِ‫مَ لَ ََ َِا َِا َِ َط مِّ رِ ََ مَ مي ْم لِ َِا َّ مً ِم َْى َِ ََ مط م‬

He was very learned in all languages
ٍ‫ََا َْ كِ ََ ََِي ةِا مِ ةَأ َِ مِّ َِ أِْر َِا م‬

and knew a great deal about herbs and
medicines

ً‫َْ ََ ََ ٍَ أ لْ ََ مََّ ََْ أ لَْ لَ َُا مِ َْأ لَْ لَ مْ َّ م‬

As soon as he was told of the king's
illness

ُ‫مِ كِ َِ يَ مَ ِم لَ َِا مَ مِ مِ َِ ََ مِ أ لْ مِ لِ م‬

he put on his best robe
ِ‫َْ مِ َِ ََ لِ ََ َِ مَ ََأ مِ مة َْ ك‬

and presented himself before the king
ُ‫َْ َْ يَ َِ ََ لَ َْ كِ ْم لِ َِ لِ م‬

"Sire," said he, "I know that no doctor
has been able to cure your majesty

َِ ‫ َْا‬: "َُ ََ َْ ََ َِ ََ ‫ ََ لَ َِ كِ ََ يَ كِ َْ لِ َّ لْ ََ مط لِ ََ يّ َط مِّ مِ ََ لْ كّ ََاْم‬، َّ‫َْ يّ م‬

I will promise to cure you without any
medicines or outward application"
‫" ََ ََ ََ يَ كَ مِ مَ ََ مِ َُ مِ كَْ مْ ََ يّ ََ لَ مْ َّ مً ََ لْ ََ لط مِّ مق ََا مَ مِ لي‬

The king listened to this proposal
ُ‫أ لْ ََ َِ َِ أ لْ َِِم كُ ْم ََ ََأ أ مَ لْ مَ ََأ م‬

"If you are clever enough to do this," he
said

َِ ‫ َْا‬: "َُ ‫"ِم ََأ كَ لَ ٍَ َِا مُ ةَأ مِ َِا َّ لَ مَي ْم لِ مِ َّا مِ مِ ََْم‬

"I promise to make you and your
descendants rich for ever."

"َ‫ََ مَ كَ َُ ََ لْ ََ لِ ََ َِ َُ ََ لَ ٍَ َََْ لح ََا كَ َُ ََ لُ مَ َّا َِ ِم َْى أ لَْ َِ م‬."

The doctor went to his house and made a
bat

‫ََ َُ َِ أْ يط مِّ كِ ِم َْى َِ لَ مَْم مِ َْ ََ ََ َِ ََ ََا‬

the handle of which he hollowed out
ِ‫أ لْ كِ لِ مِ كِ أْي مَّ ََ لِ ََ ََ مِ لَ ك‬

put in it the drug he wished to use
ِ‫َْ ََ َِ مِّ مِ أْ يَ َْأ َِ أْي مَّ ََا َْ َّ لَ َُ كِ مِي أ لْ مَ لَ ََأ مِ م‬

Then he made a ball
ً‫كَ يِ ََ ََ َِ كَ ََ ة‬

and with these things he went the next
day to the king

ُ‫َْ مِ ََ مَ مِ أ لَْ لُ َّا مِ ََ َُ َِ مِي أ لْ َّ لْ مِ أْ يَاْمي ِم َْى أ لْ َِِم م‬

He told him that he wished him to play a
game

ًَ َِ َ‫ََ لَ َِ ََِك ََ يَ كِ َّ ََ َِ يَى ََ لْ َّ لِ ََ َِ ْك ل‬

Accordingly the king mounted his horse
and

َْ ِ‫مَ َِ ةَا ْم ََْم َُ مأ لِ ََ َطى أ لْ َِِم كُ مح ََا ََ ك‬

went into the place where he played.
ِ‫ ََ َُ َِ ِم َْى أ لْ َِ ََا مْ أْي مَّ َْ مَ َِ مِّ م‬.

There the doctor approached him
ِ‫كُ ََا َُ مأ لْ ََ ََ َِ مِ لَ كِ أْ يط مِّ ك‬

with the bat he had made
ِ‫مِا لْ َِ لَ مَ مِ أْي مَّ ََ ََ ََ ك‬

saying, "Take this, sire
َ‫ َْا مِ ة‬، "َّ ََ ْ‫كَ لَ َُ ََأ َّا َِ ل‬

and strike the ball till you feel your hand
and whole body

ِ‫َْأ لَ مَ مِ أ لْ ََ ََ ًَ َح يَى ََ لُ كَ ََ مِ َّ مَ َُ َْ مِ لْ مِ َُ كَِي م‬

in a glow
َ‫مِي َْ َُ م‬

When the remedy that is in the handle of
the but is warmed

‫مَ لَ ََ َِا َّ مَ رِ ََ لَ مِ َِ كً أ لْ مَ ََ مَ أ لْ َِ لْ كِْ مَ مِي مِ لِ مِ مِ أ لْ ََ ََا‬

by your hand it will penetrate throughout
your body

ُ‫مِ َّ مَ َُ َْ لْ ٍَ ََ ََ َِ لِ َِ كِ مِي َِ مِّ مِ ََ لَ َحا مِ مِ لْ مِ م‬

Then you must return to your palace,
bathe

ِ‫ َْأ مَ لْ مَ لح َِا ك‬، َُ ِ‫َّ مِ كِ ََ َِ لّ َُ أ لْ ََ لْ ًََك ِم َْى أ لْ َِ لَ مَ أ لْ ََا يَ م‬

and go to sleep
ِ‫َََْ لَ َُ لِ أ َْى أْ يَ لْ م‬

and when you awake to-morrow morning
you will be cured

The king took the bat and urged his horse
‫ََ ََ ََ أ لْ َِِم كُ أ لْ ََ ََا َْ َح يُ َِ َْأ ََِك‬

after the ball which he had thrown
‫َِ لَ ََ أ لْ كَ ََ مً أْي مَي ََ َِا َُا‬

He struck it, and then it was hit back by
the courtiers

ً‫ كَ يِ ََ ََ َِ ََا مَ َِا كِ أ لْ َحا مُ َّ م‬، ‫ََ ََ َِ ََا‬

who were playing with him
ِ‫أْي مَّ َْ ََا كَْأ َّ لِ ََ كِْ َْ َِ ََ ك‬

When he felt very hot he stopped playing
ِ‫مَ لَ ََ َِا َُ ََ ََ مِ َح ََأ ََ مً َُ مَّ ََ مً ََ َْ يْ ٍَ ََ لْ أِْي مَ م‬

and went back to the palace
َ‫َْ ََا ََ ِم َْى أ لْ َِ لَ م‬

went into the bath, and did all that the
doctor had said

ِ‫ََ ََ َِ أ لْ َح يِا َِ َْ َِ ََ َِ كَ يِ َِا َْا َْ كِ أْ يط مِّ ك‬

The next day when he arose he found
ََ ِ‫مِي أ لْ َّ لْ مِ أْ يَاْمي مَ لَ ََ َِا َْا َِ َْ ل‬

to his great joy and astonishment
ِ‫ْم ََ ََ مح مِ أ لْ ََ مَّ مِ َْ ََ لُ َُ مَ م‬

that he was completely cured
‫ََ يَ كِ كُ مَ َي ََ َِا ةِا‬

When he entered his audience-chamber
all his courtiers

ِ‫مَ لَ ََ َِا ََ ََ َِ َْا ََ ًَ أ لْ كح كَْ مَ كَ يِ مَ َِا مِ َحا مُ َّ مَ م‬

who were eager to see if the wonderful
cure had been effected

‫أْي مَّ َْ ََا كَْأ كِ ََ َُ يْ مّْ َْ ْم َِ لَ مَ َِ مً َِا ِم ََأ ََا َْ أ لْ مَ ََ كَ أْ يَأ مِ كِ َْ لَ ََ يِ ََ لَ مَّ كَِك‬

were overwhelmed with joy
ً‫َُ َِ ََ لَ كَ كِ أ لْ ََ لَ َح ك‬

The physician Douban entered the hall
ًَ ََ ‫ََ ََ َِ أْ يط مِّ كِ كَْ َِاْ أ لْ َِا‬

and bowed low to the ground
ِ‫َْأ لَ َح ََى ََ َِى أ لَْ لَ م‬

The king, seeing him, called him
‫َِ َِ يِا ََآِك أ لْ َِِم كُ ََ ََاِك‬

made him sit by his side
ِ‫َِ ََ َِ كِ َّ لِِم كِ مِ َِا مَ مِ م‬

and showed him every mark of honour
ٍ‫َََْ لَ ََ ََ َْ كِ كَ يِ ََ ََ َِ مً َُ ََ م‬

That evening he gave him the long robe
of state

ِّْ‫مِي ََْم َُ أ لْ َِ َْا مِ ََ لُ ََأِك مَ ََأ َِ أْ يَ لْ َْ مً أْ يط م‬
and presented him with two thousand

dinars
َ‫َْ َْ يَ َِ َْ كِ ََ لْ ََ لي مَّ ََا م‬

The following day he continued to load
him with favours

ٍ‫مِي أ لْ َّ لْ مِ أْ يَاْمي َْأ ََ َِ ََ لح مِّ َِ كِ مِا لْ ََ ََ َِا م‬

Now the king had a grand-minister who
was avaricious, and envious
‫أ لِ َْ ََا َْ ْم لِ َِِم مُ َْ مَّ رَ ََ مِّ رَ َِ مُ رِ َْ َح رْْ كَ كة‬

and a very bad man
‫َْ ََ كِ رِ كة َْ يي رِ مِ ّةَأ‬

He grew extremely jealous of the doctor
ِ‫َْ َِ لَ َُ ََ ََ مِ َِ لّ ََ مً َُ مَّ ََ مً مِ َْ أْ يط مِّ م‬

and determined to bring about his ruin
ِ‫َْ ََا مَ رِ كة ََ َِى ِم لح ََأ مُ ََ ََأ مِ َْ ك‬

In order to do this he asked to speak in
private with the king

ُ‫مِ لْ ََ لِ مِ أ لْ مِ َّا مِ مِ ََْم َُ َط َِ َِ أْ يَ َح رَ َُ ََ َِى أ لَ مَ ََأ مَ َِ َِ أ لْ َِِم م‬

saying that he had a most important
communication to make

‫مِا لْ َِ لْ مِ ِم مة يْ َْ ََ لّ مِ ََ َُ يِ أ يَ ََا مِ َّ مِ كِ ِم لِ ََأ كُِك‬

"What is it?" asked the king
"‫َََْ َِ أ لْ َِِمُ " َِا َُ ََأ؟‬

"Sire," answered the grand-minister
ِ‫ََ َِا َِ أ لْ َْ مَّ كَ أ لَْ لَ ََ ك‬: "َّ ََ ْ‫" َِ ل‬

"it is most dangerous for a monarch to
confide in a man whose faithfulness is

not proved
"ِ‫مِ لْ أ لْ كَ كطْ ََ مً ََ َِى أ لْ مِ لِ مُ ََ لْ َّ مَ َق مِ ََ كِ مِ َْ لِ َّ لَ كِ لٍ ِم لَ ََ كَ ك‬

You do not know that this doctor is not a
traitor

‫ََ لَ ٍَ ََ ََ لَ َِ كِ ََ يْ َُ ََأ أْ يط مِّ َِ َْ لّ َِ ََا مِ ةَا‬

come here to assassinate you
َُ ‫َِا َِ ِم َْى كُ ََا مَ لُ مَ َّاْم‬

"I am sure," said the king
ُ‫ َْا َِ أ لْ َِِم ك‬: "َ‫"ََ ََا كِ ََََ يَ ر‬

"that this man is the most faithful and
virtuous of men

"ً‫ََ يْ َُ ََأ أْ يَ كِ َِ كُ َْ ََ لَ ََ كَ أْ يَا مِ ِم لَ ََ ةَاة َْ َِ مَّ َِ ة‬

If he wished to take my life
‫ِم ََأ ََ ََأ ََ ََ لْ ََّل كَ ََ َح َّا مَي‬

why did he cure me?
‫ْم َِا ََأ ََا َْ َِ مَي؟‬

Cease to speak against him
‫ََ َْ يْ ٍَ ََ لْ أ لْ ََ ََ مِ مَ يَِك‬

I see what it is, you are jealous of him
ِ‫ ََ لَ ٍَ ََ َِا كَ مِ لَ ك‬، َْ ُ‫ََ ََى َِا ك‬

but do not think that I can be turned
against him

‫َْ مَ لْ ََ ََ كَ رْ ََ يَ كِ كّ لِ مَ كَ مَي أ مَ لَ مِ ََ كِ ََ َِ يي‬

I will not make the same mistake that the
man did with his parrot

The minister replied :what parrot?

The king : i will tell the story of a man
who killed his parrot.

The Story of the Husband

and the Parrot

A good man had a beautiful wife
ً‫يَ كِ كِ كة يط يّ كِ كة َْ ََ لّ مِ ََ لْ َِ رً َِ مِّ َِ ر‬

whom he loved passionately
ٍ‫أْي مَي ََا َْ كّ مح رِ ََا مِ َُ َِ م‬

and never left if possible.
َْ ََ ِ‫ َْ َْ لِ كّ َِا مَ لَ ََ َِ ةَأ ِم لْ ََ ل‬.

One day, when he was obliged by
important business

‫ مَ لَ ََ َِا ََا َْ كِ لَ َط ةَّأ أْي ََ َِ مِ مة كِ مَ يِ مة مة‬، ِ‫ََأ ٍَ َّ لْ م‬

to go away from her
‫ْمّ لَ َُ َِ َِ مَّ ةَأ ََ لَ ََا‬

he went to a place where all kinds of
birds are sold

َ‫ََ َُ َِ ِم َْى َِ ََا مْ مِّ مِ كَ رِ ََ لَ َْأ مَ أْ رط كّْ مَ كَ َِا ك‬

and bought a parrot.
‫َْ مأُ ََ ََّ َِ َِ َِاِأَ َة‬

This parrot not only spoke well
َ‫َُ ََأ أ لْ َِ لِ َِا كِ َْ لِ َّ ََ َح يَ لُ َِ َِ لط مِ َُ لَ مِ َِ يّ م‬

but it had the gift of telling all that had
been done before it

ِ‫َْ َْ مَ لْ ََا َْ َْ كِ َِ لْ مُ َِ كً ِم لَ َِا مَ كَ يِ َِا َح ََ َُ أَ َِا َِ ك‬

He brought it home in a cage
َ‫ََ لح ََ ََِك ْم لِ َِ لَ مَ مِ مِي َْ ََ م‬

and asked his wife to put it in her room
‫َْ َط َِ َِ مِ لْ ََ لْ َِ مَ مِ َْ لَ ََ كِ مِي كُ لَ َِ مَ ََا‬

and take great care of it while he was
away

Then he departed. On his return

he asked the parrot what had happened
during his absence

and the parrot told him some things
ِ‫َََْ لَ َِ ََِك أ لْ َِ لِ َِا كِ مِ َِ لَ مِ أ لَْ لُ َّا م‬

which made him scold his wife
ِ‫مِ يِا َِ ََ َِ كِ كّْ يِ كُ ََ لْ َِ ََ ك‬

She thought that one of her slaves
‫ََ يَ لٍ ََ يَ كِ ََ َح رَ ََ مِّ مَ َُا‬

must have been telling tales of her
ٍ‫ََ كِ يَ ََ يَ كِ ََا َْ َّ لح مَي ََ لَ ََا مح ََا َّا م‬

but they told her it was the parrot
ِ‫َْ مَ يَ كَ لِ َْاْكْأ َْ ََا ِم يَ كِ أ لْ َِ لِ َِا ك‬

and she resolved to revenge herself on
him

ِ‫َْ ََ َِ ََ مٍ أ لْ ََ لَ َِ ََ َِى أ مَ لَ مَ َِا مِ مِ لَ ك‬

When her husband next went away for
one day

َ‫مَ لَ ََ َِا ََ َُ َِ ََ لْ كِ ََا َِ لَ ََ ََْم َُ ْم َّ لْ مِ َْأ مح م‬

she told on slave to turn under the bird's
cage a hand-mill

ً‫َط َِ لِ كٍ مِ َْ أ لْ ََ لِ مَ ََ لْ كّ مَّ ََ ََ لح ٍَ َْ ََ مَ أْ يطا مِ مَ َطا كحْ ََ ةً َّ ََ مْ يّ ة‬

another to throw water down from above
the cage

َ‫ََْكَ ََّ ْم ََ لِيم أ لْ َِا مِ مِ لْ َِ لْ مق أ لْ َِ ََ م‬

and a third is a mirror
ً‫َْأْ يَاْم كُ مِ لَآ م‬

and turn it in front of its eyes
ِ‫َْ ََِِك ََا أ َِا َِ ََ لّ ََ لّ م‬

The slaves did this for part of the night
ِ‫َِ ََ َِ أ لْ ََ لِ كَ َُ ََأ أ لْ كِ لَ َِ مِي أِْي لّ م‬

and did it very well

The next day when the husband came
back

َ‫مِي أ لْ َّ لْ مِ أْ يَاْمي مَ لَ ََ َِا ََا ََ أْ يَ لْ ك‬
he asked the parrot what he had seen

‫َََْ َِ أ لْ َِ لِ َِا َِ َِا ََأ ََآِك‬

The bird replied, "My good master
َ‫ َِ َِا َِ أ لْ كَ لََكْ ك‬: َ‫َْ يّ مَّ أْ يَاْم ك‬

thunder and rain
َ‫أْ يَ لَ كَ َْأ لْ َِ َط ك‬

disturbed me so much all night long
ِ‫ََ لَ ََ َِ مَي ََ مَّ ةَأ َط َْأ َِ أِْي لّ م‬

that I cannot tell you what I have suffered
ِ‫ََ ََ لْ ََ مطّ كِ ََ لْ َك لَ مِ ََ َُ مِ َِا ََا ََ لّ كٍ مِ لَ ك‬

" The husband, who knew that
"َُ ‫أْ يَ لْ كَ أْي مَّ ََ ََ ٍَ ََْم‬

it had neither rained nor thundered in the
night,

ِ‫َْ لِ كَ لِ مط لَ َْ َِْ كََ مََ مِي أِْي لّ م‬

was convinced that the parrot was not
speaking the truth

ً‫ََا َْ كِ لِ ََ مَ ةَا ََ يْ أ لْ َِ لِ َِا َِ َْ لِ َّ كَ لْ َِّكْ كِ أ لْ َح مِّ َِ ك‬

so he took him out of the cage
َ‫َََِ ََ ََِك مِ َْ أ لْ َِ ََ م ق‬

and threw him so roughly on the ground
that he killed him

ِ‫َََْ لْ َِاِك مِِك يْ مً ََ َِى أ لَْ لَ مِ َح يَى َْ ََ َِ ك‬

Nevertheless he was sorry afterwards
َُ ‫َْ َِ َِ ََْم َُ َِ َِ لَ َُ ََ ََ مِا لَْ َْ مٍ َِ لَ ََ ََْم‬

for he found that the parrot had spoken
the truth

‫ََ ََ كِ َْ َِ ََ أ لْ أ لْ َِ لِ َِا َِ َْا َِ أ لْ َح ّق‬

THE FISHERMAN AND THE GENII

ّّ‫ق يّة ْلّ يْاِ وْلج ي‬

Sire, there was once upon a time a
fisherman so old and so poor

‫ ََا َْ كُ ََا َُ ََأ ٍَ َِ يَ مً ََ يّا رَ ََ مِّ رَ مِي أْ يْ يْ َْ َِ مِّ رَ مِ ةَأ‬، َّ‫َْ يّ م‬

that he could scarcely manage to support
his wife and three children

ً‫ِم يَ كِ مِا لْ ََا مَ ََا َْ َْا مَ ةَأ ََ َِى ِم ََا َْ مً ََ لْ َِ مَ مِ َََْ لط ََاْم مِ أْ يَ ََ ََ م‬
He went everyday to fish very early

‫ََا َْ َّ لَ َُ كِ كَ يِ َّ لْ مِ ْم ََ لّ مَ أْ يْ َِ مُ مِي َْ لْ مٍ كِ َِ يَ مَ مِ ّةَأ‬

and each day he made a rule not to throw
his nets more than four times

ِ‫َْ مِي كَ يِ َّ لْ مِ ََ ََ َِ َْا مَ ََ ًَ َة مِ ََ ََ مِ ََ لِيم أْ يُ َِا مُ ََ لَ ََ ََ مِ لْ ََ لَ َِ م‬
ٍ‫َِ يَأ م‬

He started out one morning by moonlight
and came to the sea-shore

َ‫ َِ ََََ ََأ ٍَ ََ َِا مُ َِ َِ ََ لْ مِ أ لْ َِ َِ مَ َْ َْ ََ َِ ِم َْى َُا مط مِ أ لْ َِ لح م‬.

He undressed and threw his nets
ِ‫ََ َِ َِ َِ ََ مِ َْ كِ َََْ لْ َِى مُ َِا ََ ك‬

and as he was drawing them، he felt a
great weight

َ‫َْ َِ لّ ََ َِا ََا َْ كّ َْ يِ كَ كَ لِ َُ لَ رَ مِ مَ َِ مِ ََ مِّ م‬

He though he had caught a large fish
ً‫ََ يْ ََ يَ كِ َْ لَ أ لَ َطا ََ َْ َِ ََ ةً ََ مِّ ََ ة‬

and he felt very pleased
ً‫َْ َُ ََ ََ مِ َْ ََا ََ مً َِاْم َِ م‬

But a moment afterwards
ً‫َْ مَ لْ َِ لَ ََ َْ لح ََ م‬

seeing that instead of a fish he only had
in his nets the carcase of a donkey

ِ‫َّ ََى ََ يَ كِ َِ ََ ةَة مِ لْ أْ يْ َِ ََ مً ََا َْ َْ ََ لّ مِ َِ َِ لط كِ يَ كً مح َِا مَ مِي مُ َِا مَ م‬

he was much disappointed.Vexed with
having such a bad haul
ً‫َْ َِ لَ َك مَّ َِ مِ ََ لّ َِ مً ََ َِ مِ ََ مِّ ََ م‬

when he had mended his nets
ِ‫مَ لَ ََ َِا ََ لَ َِ ََ مُ َِا ََ ك‬

which the carcase of the ass had broken
in several places

َْ َ‫أْي مَي ََ َْ ََ لٍ كِ يَ ًَ أ لْ مح َِا مَ مِي مَ يَ مً ََ َِا م‬

he threw them a second time
ً‫ََ َِى مِ مَ لِ َِ يَ ةً ََا مَ َّ ة‬

In drawing them in he again felt a great
weight

َ‫مِ َْح مِ مَ لِ َِ يَ ةً َك لَ ََى َُ ََ ََ مِ مَ َِ مِ ََ مِّ م‬

so that he thought they were full of fish
ُ‫َح يَى ََ يْ ََ يَ ََا َِِمّ َِ رً مِاْ يْ َِ م‬

But he only found a large basket full of
rubbish

ً‫َْ مَ يَ كِ َْ لِ َّ مِ لَ مْ َْى َِْي مً ََ مِّ ََ مً َِِمّ َِ مً مِا لِْك َِا َِ م‬

He was much annoyed.“O Fortune,” he
cried

ََ ََ ََ َِ ، ‫ ََا َْ كِ لَ ََ مَ ةِا مِ ةَأ‬: "َ‫َّا ْم ََ ََأ أْ َح ر‬

“do not trifle thus with me
‫ََ قَ قَ قُا قَِ َُ ََ ََأ َِ مَي‬

a poor fisherman, who can hardly support
his family!”So saying

ِ‫ مِا لْ ََا مَ َّ لْ ََ مطّ كِ ِم ََا َْ ًَ َك لْ ََ مَ م‬،َِّ‫قْا مِ قِ قةأ " ! ََ يّا رَ َِ م‬

he threw away the rubbish
‫ََ لْ َِى أ لِْك َِا َِ ًَ َِ مَّ ةَأ‬

and after having washed his nets clean of
the dirt

َ‫َْ َِ لَ ََ ََ لْ َُ َْ َِ مُ َِا ََ كِ مِ لْ أ لَْ لْ َْا م‬

he threw them for the third time
ً‫ََ َِى مِ مَ لِ ْم لِ َِ يَ مً أْ يَاْم ََ م‬

But he only drew in stones, shells, and
mud

ِ‫َْ مَ يَ كِ َْ لِ َّْ َحِ مْ َْى أ لْ مح َِا ََ مً َْأَ لَ ََأ مٍ َْأ لْ َْ لح م‬

He was almost in despair.
ِ‫ ََا َْ ََ َِى َْ لُ مُ أ لْ ََّل م‬.

Then he threw his nets for the fourth time
ً‫كَ يِ ََ َِى أْ يُ َِا َُ ْم لِ َِ يَ مً أْ يَأ مِ ََ م‬

When he thought he had a fish he drew
them in with a great deal of trouble

ِ‫ َِ ََ َِ ََا مِ ََ مَّ مَ مِ لْ أ لْ َِ ََا مَ م‬، ً‫مَ لَ ََ َِا ََا َْ َّ لَ ََ مِ كَ ََ يْ َْ ََ لّ مِ َْ َِ ََ ة‬

There was no fish however
ً‫َْ َِ َِ ََْم َُ َْ لِ َّ كَ لْ كُ ََا َُ َْ َِ ََ ر‬

but he found a yellow pot
ََ ََ َ‫َْ مَ يَ كِ َْ َِ ََ مْ ََا ةِأ ََ ل‬

which by its weight seemed full of
something

‫أْي مَّ َِ ََأ مِ مَ َِِم مِ َِِمّ َِ َةأ مِ َُ لي مِ َِا‬

and he noticed that it was fastened and
sealed with lead

َ‫َْ ََ َح ََ ََ يَ كِ ََا َْ َِ لَ كِْ ةطا َْ َِ لَ كَْ ةِا مِاْ يَ ََا م‬

with the impression of a seal
ِ‫ َِ َِ مط َِا ََ مً أ لْ ََ لَ م‬.

He was delighted. “I will sell it
‫ ََا َْ َِ لْ كَْ ةَأ‬. "‫" َََْ مِّ كَ ََا‬

he said; “with the money I shall get for it I
shall buy a measure of wheat.

‫مِا لْ َِا مِ أْي مَّ َََْ لح كَ كِ ََ َِ لّ مِ َََْ لُ ََ مَّ ََ يِ يّ ةً مِ لْ أ لْ َِ لِ مَ" كُ َْ َْا َِ؛‬

”He examined the jar on all sides
ٍ‫َِ َح ََ أ لْ َِ يَ مً مِ لْ َِ مِّ مِ أ لْ مِ ََا م‬

he shook it to see if it would rattle
َ‫َُ يَ َُا ْم َّ ََى َِا ِم ََأ ََا ََ لٍ َْ ََ لَ ََ ر‬

But he heard nothing
‫َْ مَ يَ كِ َْ لِ َّ لْ َِ لِ َُ لّ ةِا‬

and so, judging from the impression of
the seal and the lid

ِ‫ أ لَ مط ََ ةْا مِ لْ أ لَ مط َِا مَ أ لْ ََ لَ مِ َْأ لْ مِ َطا م‬، ‫َْ َُ ََ ََأ‬

he thought there must be something
precious inside.

ِ‫ ََا َْ َّ لَ ََ مِ كَ ََ يَ كِ َّ مِ كِ ََ لْ َّ كَْ َْ كُ ََا َُ َُ لي رِ ََ مِّ رْ مِي أْ يَأ مَ م‬.

To find out, he took his knife
ِ‫ ََ لَ كَ مْ يَّ ََ ك‬، َُ ‫ْم َِ لَ مَ َِ مً ََْم‬

and with a little trouble he opened it
ِ‫َْ مِ َِِمّ مِ مِ لْ أ لْ َِ ََا مَ مِ َِ ََ َح ك‬

He turned it upside down,
ِ‫َْ لِ َِ كِ ََ لَ ةْا ََ َِى ََ مِ م‬

but nothing came out
ِ‫َْ مَ لْ َْ لِ َّ لَ كَ لَ َُ لي ر‬

which surprised him very much
‫أْي مَّ َِا َََِِك ََ مَّ ةَأ‬.

He set it in front of him
ِ‫َْ ََ ََ كِ ََ َِا َِ ك‬

and whilst he was looking at it attentively
ِ‫َْ َِ لّ ََ َِا ََا َْ كّ لَ ََ كَ ِم َْ لّ مِ مِا لُ مَ َِا م‬

such a thick smoke came out that he had

to step back a pace or two
َ‫أ لَ كط ي‬ ِ‫ََ يَ ك‬ ٍ‫ََ ََ ََ مِ لَ كِ أْ رَ ََا مْ أ لْ ََ مَّ م‬
ِ‫أْ يَ ََأ كِ م‬ ‫ِم َْى‬ ً‫ْم ََ ََ َِ م‬ ْ‫مِ كَط َْ مً مة ََ لْ أ لَ ََ ََ لّ م‬

This smoke rose up to the clouds
ِ‫أ لَ ََ ََ َِ َُ ََأ أْ رَ ََا كْ ِم َْى أ لْ كِ كّْ م‬

and stretching over the sea and the shore
ِ‫كِ ََ َِ يَ ََ َةأ ََ َِى أ لْ َِ لح مَ َْأْ يُا مط م‬

formed a thick mist, which caused the
fisherman much astonishment.
‫َُ يَ َِ ََ َِا َِ َةأ ََ مَّ ٍَ َةأ ََ ََا ََ ََ لُ َُ ًَ أْ يَ يّا مَ ََ مَّ ةَأ‬

When all the smoke was out of the jar it
gathered itself together

ٍ‫مَ لَ ََ َِا ََ ََ ََ كَ رِ أْ رَ ََا مْ مِ لْ أ لْ َِ يَ مً ََ َِ يِ ََ ل‬

and became a thick mass in which
appeared a Genie

‫َََْ لَ َِ َح لٍ كَ لَ َِ ًَ َة ََ مَّ ََ ًَ َة ََ ََ ََ مِّ ََا أ لْ مِ يَ ري‬

twice as large as the largest giant
‫مَ لَ ٍَ ََ لَ َِ مَ مَ لِ ََ مق‬

When he saw such a terrible-looking
monster,

َ‫مَ لَ ََ َِا ََََى مِ لَ َِ َُ ََأ أ لْ َْ لح مِ أْ يَ مُّ مِ أ لْ كِ لَ ََ م‬

the fisherman would like to have run
away

َِ َ‫أْ يَ يّا كَ َّ َْ رَ ََ لْ َّ لَ ك‬

but he trembled so with fright that he
could not move a step

ً‫َْ مَ يَ كِ أ لَ ََ َِ ٍَ مِ لْ أ لْ ََ لْ مٍ ْم ََ ََ َِ مً ََ يَ كِ َْ لِ َّ لْ ََ مط لِ ََ لْ كّ َح يَ َُ كَ لط َْ ة‬

“Great king of the genii,” cried the
monster

ِ‫ ََا َُ أ لْ َْ لح ك‬: "ِ‫" َِِم كُ أ لْ مِ يْ أ لْ ََ مَّ م‬

“I will never again disobey you!”At these
words the fisherman took courage

"‫مَ لَ ََ َُ مَ مِ أ لْ ََِم َِا مٍ ََ َحِيى أْ يَ يّا كَ "! َْ لْ َك لَ مَ َّ َُ َِ يَ ةً َك لَ ََى‬
ً‫مِاْ يُ َِا ََ م‬

“What is this you are saying
ِ‫َِا َُ ََأ أْي مَّ ََِكْْك ك‬

great Genie? Tell me your history and
how you came to be shut up in that vase
َُ ِ‫أ لْ مِ يَ يي أ لْ ََ مَِّ؟ ْك لِ ْمي مْ يَ ََ َُ َْ ََ لّ ٍَ مِ لِ ٍَ ْم ََ كَْ َْ كِ لِ َِ ةِا مِي مَ ل‬

ً‫أ لْ مِ لَ َُ مَ يّ م‬

.”At this, the Genie looked at the
fisherman haughtily

ً‫ ََ ََ ََ أ لْ مِ يَ ري ِم َْى أْ يَ يّا مَ مِ َِ لط ََ َْ م‬، ‫مَ لَ ََ َُ ََأ‬

“Speak to me more civilly,” he said,
“before I kill you

َِ ‫ َْا‬: "َُ َِ َ‫ َْ لِ َِ ََ لْ ََ لْ ك‬، ََ ََ َ‫ ََ َح يَُ َِ مَي مِ مح لَ َِ مً ََ ل‬.

”“Alas! why should you kill me?”
""‫" ْم َِا ََأ ََ لِ كَِك مَي؟ ! َْأ لح َْ لَ ََاِك‬

cried the fisherman. “I have just freed you
َ‫ قَ قَ قَ أْ يَ يّا ك‬. "ْ‫َْ َِ لَ َح يَ لَ كَ َُ ْمِ يَ ي‬

have you already forgotten that?”“
‫" َُ لِ ََ مّْ ٍَ ََْم َُ مِا لْ مَ لَ مِ؟‬

No,” answered the Genie
ََ ، "‫ََ َِا َِ أ لْ مِ يَ ري‬.

“but that will not prevent me from killing
you

َُ ‫َْ مَ يْ َُ ََأ َْ لْ َّ لِ ََ ََ مَي مِ لْ َْ لَِم‬

and I am only going to grant you one
favour

‫َْ َََْ لِ ََ كح َُ مَ لَ َِ ةً َْأ مح ََ ةً َِ َِ لط‬

and that is to choose the manner of your
death

َُ َ‫َْ كُ َْ أ لَ مَ َّا كَ َط مَّ َِ مً َِ لْ م‬

But what have I done to you?” asked the
fisherman

‫َََْ َِ أْ يَ يّاَ " َْ َْ مَ لْ َِا ََأ َِ ََ لِ كٍ َْ َُ؟‬

“I cannot treat you in any other way”
"‫" ََ ََ لْ ََ مطّ كِ ََ لْ َك ََا مِ َِ َُ مََِ يّ َط مَّ َِ مً َك لَ ََى‬

said the Genie, “and if you would know
why

‫ َْا َِ أ لْ مِ يَ ري‬، "‫َِْم ََأ كَ لَ ٍَ ََ لَ َِ كِ ْم َِا ََأ‬

listen to my story.“I rebelled against the
king of the genii.

‫ َْ َِ لَ ََ َِ يَ لَ كٍ ََ َِى مِ لِ مُ أ لْ مِ يْ" أ لْ ََ َِ َِ ِم َْى مْ يَ مَي‬.

To punish me, he shut me up in this vase
of copper

ِ‫ َح َِ َْ مَي مِي ِم ََا مِ مِ لْ أْ رَ َحا م‬، ‫ْم كِ ََا َْ َِ مَي‬

and he put on the leaden cover his seal
َ‫َْ َْ ََ َِ ََ لَ َِ كِ ََ َِى مُ َطا مِ أْ يَ ََا م‬

which is enchantment enough to prevent
my coming out

‫َْ كُ َْ مْ لح رَ ََا مِي ْم َِ لَ مِ كَ كَْ مِ لي‬

Then he had the vase thrown into the sea
َ‫كَ يِ ََ لْ َِى أ ل مإ ََا َِ مِي أ لْ َِ لح م‬

During the first period of my captivity
َّ‫مَ ََ َِ أ لْ ََ لَ ََ مً أ لْكْ َْى مِ لْ أَ لْ م‬

I vowed that if anyone should free me
before a hundred years were passed

ِ‫ََ ََ لَ كٍ ََ يَ كِ ِم ََأ َح يَ ََ مَي ََ َح رَ َْ لِ َِ كِ كَْ مَ مِا َِ مً ََا م‬

I would make him rich even after his
death. But that century passed

ِ‫ َََْ لِ ََِك كِ ََ مَ ةّا َح يَى َِ لَ ََ َْ َِا مَ م‬. ‫َْ مَ يْ َُ ََأ أ لْ َِ لَ َْ َِ ََى‬

and no one freed me
َ‫َْ َْ لِ كّ َح يَ لَ مَي ََ َح ر‬

In the second century I vowed that I
would give all the treasures in the world

to my deliverer
‫ ََ ََ يَ ََ لٍ مََِ لْ َك لَ مط َي كَ يِ كَ كَْ مَ أ لْ ََا َْ مِ ْم كِ لَِم مَي‬، ‫مِي أ لْ َِ لَ مْ أْ يَا مَي‬

but he never came.“In the third, I
promised to make him a king

‫ َْ مَ يَ كِ َْ لِ ََّل مٍ ََ َِ ةَأ‬. "‫ َْ ََ لَ كٍ ََ لْ ََ لِ ََ َِ كِ َِِم ةَا‬، ً‫مِي أْ يَاْم ََ م‬
to be always near him, and to grant him

three wishes every day
ِ‫ َْأَِ ََ َح كِ ََ ََ َُ َك لِ مَ َّا مٍ كَ يِ َّ لْ م‬، ِ‫ََ لْ أَ كَْ َْ ََأ مِ ةِا مِا لِْك لَ مِ مِ لَ ك‬

but that century passed away as the other
two had done

ْ‫َْ مَ يْ ََْم َُ أ لْ َِ لَ َْ َِ ََى ََ َِا َِ ََ َِ أ مَ لَ ََا مْ أ لِ ََ ََأ م‬

and I remained in the same plight. At last
I grew angry at being captive for so long

ً‫ َْ ََ َِ َِ لٍ مِي ََ لَ مِ أ لْ مِ لح ََ م‬. ‫مِي أْ يَ ََا َّ مً َُ ََ لَ كٍ مِا لْ َِ ََ مِ مَْ يَ مَي‬
ً‫ََ مّْ كَ كة ْم ََ لَ ََ مً َط مّْ َِ م‬

and I vowed that if anyone would release
me I would kill him at once

َ‫َََْ لْ َْ لِ كٍ ََ يَ كِ ِم ََأ ََ لط َِ َِ مَي ََ َح رَ كة َََْ لْ كَِك كِ ََ َِى أ لْ ََ لْ م‬

and would only allow him to choose in
what manner he should die

‫َْ َْ كّ لْ َِ كَ َْ كِ َِ َِ لط مِا لَ مَ َّا مَ أْ يط مَّ َِ مً أْي مَي َّ مِ كِ ََ لْ َّ كِْ ٍَ مِ ََا‬

So you see, as you have freed me to-day
َِ ْ‫ ََ َِا َح يََ ََ مَي أ لْ َّ ل‬، ََّ ََ ‫ْم ََْم َُ ََ َِا‬

choose in what way you will die
‫" أ لَ ََ مَ أْ يط مَّ َِ ًَ أْي مَي َْ ََ كِْ كٍ مِ ََا‬.

.”The fisherman was very unhappy
ً‫ََا َْ أْ يَ يّا كَ َُ لّ ََ َْ مَّ مَ ْم لِ َِا َّ م‬

“What an unlucky man I am to have freed
you!

"َُ َ‫! َّا َْ كِ مِ لْ ََ كِ مِ َْ يّ مِ أ لْ َح يَ مْ قَ مَي َح يَ لَ ك‬

I implore you to spare my life
‫َك ََا مُ كَ َُ ََ لْ كَِ مِ َي ََ َِي َح َّا مَي‬

”“I have told you,” said the Genie
‫" َْ َِ لَ ََ لَ َِ لَ كَ َُ" َْا َِ أ لْ مِ يَ ري‬

“that it is impossible. Choose quickly
"ِ‫ َُ ََأ كِ لْ ََ محّ ر‬. ً‫أ لَ ََ لَ مِ كْ لَ ََ م‬

you are wasting time
ٍَ ْ‫ََ لَ ٍَ كَ مَ يّ كِ أ لْ َْ ل‬

”The fisherman began to devise a plot
‫َِ ََََ أْ يَ يّا كَ مِي أ لِ مَ ََا مَ محّ َِ مً مة‬

“Since I must die,” he said
َِ ‫" مِ َِا ََ يَ مَي َّ مِ كِ ََ لْ ََ كِْ ٍَ" َْا‬

“before I choose the manner of my death
"‫َْ لِ َِ ََ لْ ََ لَ ََا ََ َط مَّ َِ ًَ َِ لْ مَي‬

I conjure you to tell me if you really were
in that vase?”“

‫" ََ لْ ََ لحِمَك َُ ََ لْ كَ لَ مِ ََ مَي َِا ِم ََأ كَ لَ ٍَ َح ةِا مِي مَ لِ َُ أ لْ َِ لَ َُ مَ يّ مً؟‬
Yes, I was” answered the Genie.
