Directions: Find a computer-related job that you would desire if you were interested in
pursuing a career in the computer industry. Using word processing software (such as
Microsoft Word), prepare a report. Your report should include the following information:

1. Name of the occupation
2. An example of a company which would employ someone working in your chosen

occupation
3. Based on the occupation, share what skills are needed for the occupation. Use

the Occupational Outlook Handbook to obtain information regarding the skills needed.
4. Provide the names of at least three colleges that prepare students with the necessary

education for your chosen occupation. Try to find at least one college in
Georgia. Access the GeorgiaCollege411 website to obtain college information. Share
what type of degree or certification is needed for the job.
5. Provide information on the salary range for the job. The Occupational Outlook
Handbook will provide salary information.
6. Provide information on the job outlook. Use the Occupational Outlook Handbook to
obtain information regarding the future outlook of the career.

Hardware Engineer
An occupation that I am interested in is called hardware engineering. A hardware
engineer is an engineer that looks at computer hardware and best decides how to improve it.

They do this by torture testing a certain part, stressing a part beyond normal limits, and seeing
what part of the part gives out first. This includes products such as motherboards, GPUs
(Graphics Processing Units), CPUs (Central Processing Units), Power Supplies and even
computer cases themselves. Companies that have employed people for projects like this consist
of NVidia, a GPU manufacturer, Intel, a CPU manufacturer, AMD, a GPU and CPU
manufacturer, Corsair, a power supply manufacturer, case manufacturer, and CPU coolers, and
myriads more. However, even with all these companies hiring hardware engineering is only
expected to grow about 3% over the next 3 years. Hardware engineers have many requirements
in order to obtain the job they want however. To name a few personality requirements you need
to be able to have good attention to detail, critical thinking, and analytical thinking. Education
requirements for a hardware engineer include a bachelor’s degree in information technology and
engineering. Most colleges around Georgia are now starting to offer programs for degrees. Some
of these include Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, and Georgia State. Hardware engineering also
has one of the largest wage ranges of any field and the largest in the IT industry as of right now.
The starting wage ranges around $90k and goes upward towards $200k. The current average
wage for hardware engineering is around $111k as of 2014. Some certifications that will help
you reach the top end of the wage range would be the Computer hardware engineering
certification, yes that is the actual name for the certification. What this certification allows for
you do is it gives the hardware engineer more access to higher level components. Another
certification that allows for a more successful hardware engineer is a certification in
computational linguistics. The certification shows a deeper understanding of language data and
computer algorithms. However, even though there are many options for certifications for
hardware engineering there are currently no required certifications that are needed to become

one. Jobs such as hardware engineering are one example of how engineering is taken to another
level with the introduction of computing. So much so that it even created its own field. However,
hardware engineering isn’t the only field that has been created in the engineering field because of
computers, some others include software engineering and AI engineering. Computers aren’t just
creating jobs in the engineering field but computing has allowed for the advancement in nuclear
engineering, by allowing for better analysis of key components, petroleum engineers, by
allowing for better analysis of drilling sites, and even agricultural engineers and farmers,
allowing for both of them to better analyze farms and various crops.
