MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

C h a n g e is often described as one of the hardest processes
to go through. Yet, we have all been forced to live in
circumstances that have been punctuated by change. This is
our third Yearbook that has been dominated by the pandemic.
The first year saw the emergence of Covid-19 and the impact
on our lives. The second year brought resilience with the
constant change of being in and out of school. This, the third
year, brings hope as we rebuild and learn to live with Covid;
the endemic phase. We are living through history being made
and it will be some time yet before the world fully recovers.
What will our future selves think of this period in our lives?
However it is judged and remembered, we should recognise
that we have learnt to live with change and have coped well. I am incredibly grateful and so
overwhelmed by the resilience shown throughout our community. Students, staff, and parents,
came together and supported each other throughout this time. I suppose I am writing in the hope
that the new academic year will be the one where we return to the normality of the busy school
year with events and activities taking place as usual. The second half of this school year has shown
us that our passion and drive as a school community has not been dampened.

Despite the challenges, our students have continued their learning process and have transitioned
back to life in school. Our borders opened and travel became easier, allowing many of our families
to be reunited and to be able to return to school. School trips, extracurricular activities and school
events have been appearing in our calendar. Thank you to all of the organisers in ensuring these
can take place safely. Day trips, beach and reef cleans, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions are all part
of the extended curriculum that have seen a return. We have seen assemblies and performances in
the hall. PE lessons have also shown a return to their usual intensity and performance, in school
and off-site. Along with our school’s commitment to improvement, Vision 25 has started again and
we will be returning after the holidays to an improved school grounds. Making the school safer as
well as improving the outdoor learning environments for all students, staff, parents, and visitors.

I wish to show my appreciation to the Board of Governors and the PTASC. Both groups of dedicat-
ed parents have selflessly given so much of their time to support the school during such
uncertainty. I thank them all for their support and steadfast planning for our continued success in
the future. At this time of the year it is also tradition to wish our leaving staff and families a fond
farewell and to wish them safe travels as they journey to new locations and new adventures.

Finally, a word of thanks to Lisa, Rachel and Dougal for all their hard work to prepare this
Yearbook.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD

Greetings my dear KIS community,

A year has gone by. Our 49th year.
A year of many challenges in a wide
myriad of ups and downs, and yet we
persevere and we grow.

Despite all that we had to manage, individually and as a community, we have grown
stronger and wiser through it all. All of this would not have been possible without kind-
ness, dignity and respect to one and all within our KIS community and beyond. It is not
just our mission statement, it is our way of life in this little community nestled in an
amazing part of Borneo.

On behalf of the Board and the KIS community, I would like to thank our team of amazing
teachers and TLAs as well as all the behind the scenes support staff, led by Dr Ian Gross.
Their unending efforts ensured that our children are able to continue to develop individu-
ally and as a team. They have been able to achieve their full potential as successful global
citizens throughout the online digital learning period of the MCO, just as well as when
they were in school.

It was a welcome change to be able to get back to our old routines of sending our kids
back to school with some added adjustments and upgrades, as we continue on our journey
in nurturing caring global citizens.

Our 50th year is just around the corner, and it will be an Amazing 50th. Whether you are a
student, graduate student, teacher, staff or parent - you are a part of this KIS Story. Your
part in this is one that only you can write. I ask that you write it well so you can be proud
to tell this story to others.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY

What a year! My first as Head of Primary. The year didn’t
exactly start as we would all hope it to, but even so; our teach-
ers still strove to provide the very finest in education; our stu-
dents still continued to work to the best of their ability and
the community still managed to provide wonderful experienc-
es - such as weekly fun Class Dojo challenges; Primary House
Colour Day; competitions like: Life after Lockdown and Get up
and Move; coffee mornings and festival celebrations to name
but a few. More recently, it has been so wonderful to see
things returning to normal, for example, class assemblies and
school trips have returned, events that have always been a
huge part of our wider curriculum.

The community at KIS is, quite frankly, the best I have ever experienced, it is what I love most
about the school. The fact that this has continued to thrive throughout everything that has
happened, is fantastic. I am proud of our response to the pandemic and what our school
achieved, as part of the community of KIS. There have been many highlights of the year.
The ones that spring to mind are the wonderful EYFS Christmas singalong - the children sang
beautifully and made the staff and their parents very proud. Even though we were unable to have
a Lion Dance Troupe in school for Chinese New Year, the fantastic ground staff along with Dr
Gross and Mr Beresford, performed their own version throughout the school corridors, proving
we find a way, even with SOPs. Our first class assembly in over two years was superb and on the
anniversary of the very first lockdown was a symbol of hope for the future and the school
returning to normality.

I am very proud of every one of our students, for not only their academic achievements but their
resilience, determination and spirit. I hope this yearbook serves as a reminder of this time and
provides them with the memories of their year of learning and all they have achieved. I would like
to take this opportunity to thank all of the dedicated and caring staff for the outstanding job they
continue to do in teaching and supporting our students and I am extremely grateful to all parents
for their ongoing support.

It has been an honour and a privilege to get to know all the primary students and watch their
progress throughout this year. I look forward to all that the next academic year will bring.

Wishing everyone love, laughter and lots of learning!

Take care.
