MESSAGE FROM THE PTASC

Welcome to the end of what can only be described as a year as strange as the one before.
We started with what we got used to the previous year, being online and stuck at home. Then
we slowly transitioned to the classroom and to a ‘new normal’ in our everyday life. As we were
becoming used to this ‘new normal’ we had it taken away (thankfully!) briefly again. And so, the
in-person/online learning coronavirus-roller-coaster journey continued throughout the year. For-
tunately, we seem to have come (cough, cough, hopefully not spoken too soon) to living with
Covid in our normal life.
The PTASC has had a challenging year again navigating SOP’s and what can and can’t be done.
From online meetings to online activities, to in person activities that only the school staff can
conduct on our behalf and finally the return of our presence in the school grounds through
regular activities like ice cream sales. Not only has the PTASC shown a great resilience to
overcome every hurdle that the virus and government have thrown at us, we have also shown
persistence and a passion to support the staff, parents and children through any and all means
available to us. Coronavirus may have kept us at home longer than anyone ever imagined but
the parents of KIS students have proven that community spirit is alive and well and will always
shine through even on the darkest days. The PTASC is proud to represent all the parents of KIS
and bring a smile to the children’s face.

MESSAGE FROM THE PTASC

We have held an online event for Deepavali, sent Christmas cheer through videos submitted, given
children a sugar rush with Christmas cookies, had the staff perform a lion dance, given children
oranges, added our “grown-up” book swap during Book Week and beyond, celebrated staff ap-
preciation, harvest festival and finally the return of our “famous” ice cream sales.
Finally, on behalf of the PTASC, we give our heartfelt thanks to the tireless primary and secondary
class ambassadors and the many, many, messages they send on our behalf each year. We also
thank the staff, students and, most importantly, the parents for your continued generosity and
support towards the entire community at KIS. And on behalf of all our community, to the members
of the steering committee: thank you for all of your hard work throughout the school year! We
look forward to the next team returning to the “glory” days pre-COVID with parents returning to
school events with a bang!

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY

This time last year we were chronicling how our lives had
changed due to the pandemic and how we, at that time,
were becoming familiar with a whole new lexicon of
language, and a way of behaving, that we could never have
anticipated would have affected us in the way that it had.
As a community is was difficult at times, and a real test of
endurance, persistence, and at times, courage.

With the lifting of some restrictions and the easing of SOPs,
there is now a real feeling that we are emerging from that
difficult time. We can see examples of those freedoms:
off-site PE lessons, afterschool clubs and activities, lunchtime
and break supervised games on the field, field trips. To great
relief all round, our IGCSE and A Level students are here
every day sitting their examinations in the exam room, where
at one time some months ago we imagined that might not be
possible. Best of all, students are back in school and we are enjoying very high levels of attend-
ance. There are some things that online learning cannot easily replicate, including the highs and
lows of normal social interaction, the kind that take place when students are walking between
lessons, or lining up outside the classroom ready to enter, and the informal chatter between
students and the teachers and form tutors. It is wonderful to now see all of that taking place.

As we complete one academic year and we turn our minds to the next, we anticipate that 2022
to 2023 will be the year when things truly revert to the ‘old normal’. Before that, with the long
summer holiday rapidly approaching, many of us are looking forward with a huge sense of
excitement and anticipation to seeing family and friends whom we have been separated from,
in some cases, for years. We are currently confidently planning the academic calendar for next
year and putting into that all of the ‘usual’ activities, including dates for field trips, festival
events, subject days, such as Science Day and Math's Day, FOBISIA events, Duke of Edinburgh
Adventurous Journeys; the list goes on. We look forward to seeing our student leaders
blossoming in a way that has not been entirely possible during the last two years, and working
with the Prefects, Charity Committee, the Student Council and the PTASC on campaigns and
events.

As a community we pulled together during a difficult time. In a sense, that was to be expected.
KIS is a community, and in communities individuals and teams support each when things are
tough. I would like to thank everybody, staff, students and parents for ensuring that KIS did not
just endure, but came through as strong as ever.

I know that we can look forward to exciting times ahead!
