The family finishes its breakfast and is set to go to the
agricultural fields. On the way, Rajgopalan explains the
harvest festival, Makar Sankranti.
Makara Sankranti or Maghi, is a festival day in
the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya,
the Sun God. It is a four day festival.
It is observed each year in
January. It marks the end of the
winter season and the start of
longer days. It is celebrated with
traditional fervour and gaiety.
DAY 1 The Subramaniam family arrives at the
agricultural land of Rajgopalan.
Laxmi greets Shanthi.
The celebrations start with the Bhogi festival. The
devotees worship Lord Indra, the god of clouds and rains
and seek his blessings for abundant harvest.
The festival is of utmost importance
for farmers as they seek plenty and
prosperity for their land during this
time of the year.

GLOSSARY
Harvesting is the cutting of crop
after it is mature. Harvesting in our
country is either done manually by
sickle or by a machine called
harvester
Threshing is the process of separating
grains from stalks. In this process, the
stalks are beaten to free the grain seeds.
This is also carried out with the help of a
machine called ‘combine’ which is both a
harvester as well as a thresher.
Winnowing is a process of separating
heavier and lighter components of a
mixture by wind or by blowing air. Chaff
which is lighter than the grains can be
separated by winnowing.
Handpicking is a method used for
separating slightly larger sized
impurities like the pieces of dirt, stone,
and husk from wheat, rice or pulses.
Sieving is a simple technique for separating
particles of different sizes with the help
of a sieve.
Density is how heavy is one component as compared with other
components in a mixture.
A mixture is formed when two or more different substances are
physically combined and can be separated back into its original substances.
128
Heterogeneous mixture is a type of
mixture in which different components of
the mixture form different layers on
the basis of their densities.eg. sand in
water. Sand can not dissolve in water so
it is insoluble and hence, it forms a
separate layer in water.
DISSOLVING Homogeneous mixture is a mixture in
SALT IN which all the components are
WATER completely mixed. eg. salt in water.
Salt can dissolve in water and hence it
mixes with water completely.
Sedimentation is a process in which the
heavier component in a mixture settles
down after water is added to it. The
heavier particles that settle down are
called sediment.
Decantation is a process of pouring
of the liquid to separate the solid
sediment after the process of
sedimentation. eg. in a mixture of
sand and water, the heavier sand
particles settle down at the bottom
and the water can be separated by
decantation.
Loading is a process of increasing the rate of sedimentation of particles by
adding some chemicals like alum to the mixture.
Filtration is a method of separation to
remove insoluble solids from the liquid
with the help of a filter paper or muslin
cloth.
129
Churning is a process of shaking up
cream or whole milk to make butter,
usually using a butter churn. The
cream is then separated from the
top of the milk.
Evaporation a process in which a
liquid gets converted into its vapour
on heating. Evaporation can be used
to separate a solid dissolved in a liquid.
Condensation is a process by which
vapour of a substance is changed
into its liquid on cooling.
Solution is a homogeneous mixture in
which the minor component (the solute)
is uniformly distributed within the major
component (the solvent).
Solute is the solid component of a solution which gets dissolved in the
liquid. eg. sugar is the solute in a mixture of sugar and water.
Solvent is the liquid component of a solution in which solute is mixed. eg.
water is the solvent in a mixture of sugar and water.
Saturated solution is a solution in which no more solute can be dissolved.
More solute can be dissolved in a solution by heating it or by increasing
the quantity of solvent.
