On a crisp winter day in February, the Foundation of Greater Greensboro unveiled an approximately sixthousand-pound bronze statue of Chief Justice Henry E. Frye (Spring 1951 Initiate of North Carolina A&T State University, the Alpha Nu of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, 53rd Laurel Wreath Recipient), and his Silhouette, Mrs. Shirley T. Frye (Spring 1952 initiate of North Carolina A&T State University, the Alpha Phi of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc.) for their many accomplishments in the pursuit of civil rights and justice. Self-described “figurative portrait sculptor” Maria J. Kirby-Smith was commissioned to create the artwork now on display in Center City Park of Greensboro. Approximately 250 people attended the event. Chief Justice Henry E. Frye graduated from North Carolina A&T State University, earning a bachelor’s degree with the highest honors. Brother Frye, after serving his nation in Japan and in the Korean War and being promoted to the rank of Captain, was given what is now known infamously as a “Literacy Test,” wickedly designed for African Americans to fail. “Did you know they wouldn’t let me vote?” Brother Frye asked his bride, Shirley, on their wedding day. “Henry, can we talk about this some other time?” he heard the soon-to-be Mrs. Frye whisper on what should have been a joyous day. Brother Frye determined then that he would fight the same injustices, using them to fuel a series of “firsts” in his illustrious life: first African American to matriculate to the School of Law at UNC-Chapel Hill, the first black assistant district attorney, the first African American elected to the North Carolina General Assembly, where he introduced legislation to abolish literacy tests. Brother Frye was a founding member of Greensboro National Bank and the first African American appointed to the North Carolina Supreme Court, eventually elevated to North Carolina’s first African American Chief Justice. Silhouette Shirley T. Frye was a courageous trailblazer in her own right. Also graduating from North Carolina A&T State University with the highest honors and a master’s in psychology and special education from Syracuse University, Mrs. Frye led the desegregation of two YWCAs in Greensboro, serving as president of the YWCA in 1969. Mrs. Frye served as chair of the Human Relations Advisory Committee, addressing parents' Flowers to Living Giants By Brother Reginald L. Goodwin Greensboro (NC) Alumni 124

concerns during the court-ordered busing era. The Shirley T. Frye YWCA on Wendover Avenue is named in her honor. Mrs. Frye is a former Greensboro Chamber of Commerce member who participated in the State Department of Public Instruction’s survey for gifted and talented children. She was the Bennett Women’s College special education coordinator for four years. With Greensboro’s Direction Services, she worked to place stressed children in better environments where their needs were not being met in their previous ones. While her beloved husband was on the North Carolina Supreme Court, she served as an officer in the Sir Walter Cabinet. Mrs. Frye served as vice president of community relations at WFMY News 2. She chaired the Greater Greensboro United Way’s Board of Directors in 2003. Jim Melvin, President of the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. Delivering remarks for the occasion were the Hon. Roy Cooper, Governor of the state of North Carolina, Hon. Nancy Vaughan, Mayor, City of Greensboro, Dr. Harold Martin, Sr., Chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University, Justin Outling, Partner, Brooks Pierce Law Firm. Rev Dr. Darryl Aaron, Pastor of Providence Baptist Church, delivered the invocation. North Carolina A&T State University’s Gospel Choir, under the direction of Mastro Dr. Travis Alexander, performed the National Anthem at the opening and “God Bless America” before the statue unveiling. The Frye’s grandchildren unveiled the statue, and the Greensboro Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was in attendance in Crimson blazers in a show of honor and deep respect. Governor Cooper, recounting a self-deprecating tale of drawing an “S” on his tshirts and tying a towel around his neck, said that the Fryes are “modern-day superheroes,” which is very apropos. We are fortunate to give our flowers and trophies to our living giants. Brothers from Greensboro (NC) Alumni in attendance 125

International Naively, I initially thought that English was a language all individuals could understand, functioning as a “default” form of communication. Traveling outside the United States for the first time in December of 2022 helped me see the overwhelming ignorance in my perspective. From then onward, I knew I needed to prioritize traveling abroad to see other lands, experience various cultures, and, most importantly, expand my mind. I knew I needed SOMETHING new. On August 4th, 2023, I found myself stepping onto a plane, leaving behind everyone and everything I knew, to travel 10,000 miles away to Asia, a land I only knew was the largest continent in the world and home to my favorite interests from childhood, Karate Kid and Kung Fu Panda. Nonetheless, I was drawn to Asia because of the promise of exciting, different experiences; everyone I knew who traveled abroad solely went to Europe. Additionally, selecting the National University of Singapore (NUS) as my exchange institution, I knew studying at one of the highest-ranked research universities in the world would be invaluable in my quest to obtain a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. From volunteering at the FIBA Intercontinental Cup and prevailing through the most challenging academic semester to finding new love and appreciation for bookshops and inexpensive yet delicious food, my most enjoyable experiences stemmed from the Bond. Connecting with the Singapore Nupes and flying out to Thailand to visit my sands and his father (Bro. Dylan Sparks, Pi Mu, Spr. 23 & Bro. Daniel Sparks, DullesLeesburg Alumni, Spr. 13), I was reminded that I have hospitality all across the world. As I return to the States for my last semester of undergrad, my experience has made me more motivated than ever to continue pursuing new experiences and challenges, remaining the master of my fate and the captain of my soul. Kappa Alpha Psi National Chapter Advisors’ NFD 2024 Annual Meeting Recruiting and Retaining Members Lifelong Commitment – Embracing the Challenge All 12 provinces of Kappa Alpha Psi were in attendance to receive annual training. The following report is a summary of the presentations that we given by Chairman Brother Daryl McGee and Brother Doctor John Cade Undergraduate Growth and Development Plan was presented. In the strategic plan for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., covering 2021-2025, key figures Dr. John Cade and Donald L. Woolridge Sr. put forth initiatives for undergraduate growth and development. These strategies focus on nurturing academic excellence, broadening the fraternity's presence across colleges, providing educational opportunities, and facilitating smooth transitions into professional life. This approach is designed to foster a culture of success and achievement, enhance the fraternity's Achievement Academy, and bolster supportive relationships between chapters and advisors. “Recruiting and Retaining Members” presentation was presented The presentation "Recruiting and Retaining Members" highlights the distinction between Static and Dynamic Recruitment in fraternity/sorority life. It critiques Static Recruitment for its passive approach and reliance on the organization's inherent appeal, advocating instead for Dynamic Recruitment, which prioritizes genuine relationships, proactive engagement, and meaningful conversations. Dynamic Recruitment is presented as a multifaceted approach that believes in the power of personal connections, active growth efforts, and strategic member selection to ensure chapters attract members who truly align with their values and goals. Actionable Items Brothers, please continue to purchase our plates and keep Kappa well represented on the road wherever you may go. Frames are nice, plates are better!!! Purchase a plate TODAY!!! Our undergraduate chapters are requested to join as well with either a chant (keeping it PG) or a song. There will be no excuses to not dominate the yard and have a great Kappa time with these songs under your belt!!! The MEP Kappa Khorus – We will continue the tradition of rendering the best that a one rehearsal choir can do.
