A Love Letter to Us All!
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1
Growing up in my early years of considering ministry, I looked
at my pastor as the model of the person I hoped to be as a pastor. Rev. Dr. Bob Brooks was not only a gentle, deeply spiritual man,
his voice comforted and inspired me again and again. As I shared
my own calling of Christ to ministry, Bob began writing letters of encouragement to me. He would remind me again and again to trust God’s leading. His letters always began the same way, “To Steven, my true son in the faith, grace and peace to you in Christ Jesus.” I still have several of those letters, filled with love, acceptance and faith for my journey, They are some of the many cherished letters I’ve kept over the years.
I also have a few letters from my Grannie Davis, from my Grandma and Grandpa Horner, and from a life-long friend, Ann. These letters all move me each time I read them. They remind me again and again of how God has used others in my life to guide
me and strengthen my faith. These “love letters” are the intentional efforts of others to bring me closer to them, to the love of God and to growing in love for others. Looking at those letters recently, it made the thing about the “love letters” I’ve received and the “love letters” shared with us in God’s Word.
When was the last time you opened a love letter — one written by hand, maybe even on fancy paper? In an age of texts and emails, such a gesture feels rare, even old-fashioned. But there’s something sacred about it. A letter like that holds more than words, it holds heart. It reminds us that we are seen, known, and cherished. We don’t just read it once. We keep it. We come back to it. It shapes how we see ourselves.
That’s the power of a love letter: it affirms us, grounds us, transforms us.
In that spirit, we begin a journey in August into what might seem an unexpected place. As we have welcomed the Spirit of Pentecost
2
in June and been reminded in July of how the Church is called to recognize the needs of people in the world, our global connection and concerns, we have opened our eyes to truly see and let others know we see them and are responding. The Letter to the Hebrews, at first glance, reads more like a theological essay or an impassioned sermon than a personal note. The author is unnamed. The recipients are scattered and unnamed, too. And yet, beneath its lofty words and deep theology is something utterly human: a voice trying to reach people who are tired, unsure, and in need of encouragement.
Hebrews is a love letter in its own right, a reminder of who we are and whose we are. It calls us back to Jesus, the one who walks with us, understands our weakness, and still calls us beloved. As we read and reflect, may we receive it not as abstract theology, but as a living word written to us, written for us. May it become a letter we return to often, a letter of love that continues to affirm, shape, and renew us.
Who might we encourage who is feeling weary and in need
of support? Who might we reach out to share the life and love of God with people who are tired of “religious talk” and ready to feel a spiritual connection that is real and sustaining? Where are we engaging in life’s uncertainty with the hope that says, “you can be certain of this - you are a beloved child of God!”
What binds us is covenant and the mutual commitment to BE the Church.
We are St. John’s UCC, Fullerton, and...
“We Worship, We Love and We Serve ~ No Matter What!”
Yours in grace and hope,
Rev. Steven Davis, Senior Pastor

Worship, Love and Serve - No Matter What!
JANET BOYD
I am originally from the Atlanta, Georgia area, but have had the pleasure of living
in nine different states in the southern and northeastern U.S. Though I grew up in a church-going United Methodist family, I chose to “convert” to the United Church
of Christ (UCC) during seminary. The inclusiveness, “radical welcome,” and strong commitment to justice of the UCC called out to me, and I have been “hooked” ever since!
My husband, Bob Stevens, and I are both retired Penn Northeast Conference (now Keystone Conference!) pastors. During
most of my “professional ministry,” I was
an intentional interim pastor, helping congregations through the unique challenges and opportunities of the time in between settled pastors.
Between us, Bob and I have one canine child, five adult (human) children scattered from San Diego to NYC, and five grandchildren, who range in age from infant to teen. Now that we are retired, we love being able to spend more time with family. When we are missing from St. John’s, it’s a safe bet that we are with them, or off visiting our siblings in parts south.
I enjoy exploring history, diverse cultures, and religion through reading and travel, and am somewhat of a shutterbug. Church-wise, I especially love ministries of worship, welcome, faith formation, mission, and justice.
As a new member of St. John’s UCC, I feel very blessed to be part of such an active, caring, and inclusive congregation! I look forward to getting to know everyone better and to “BEING THE CHURCH” TOGETHER!
Summer Supper Sharing for the Soul
Wednesdays at 6pm - July 30, August 13 & 20
Pastor Steve has been guiding us in a discussion study “How to Study the Bible and Enjoy It!” Even if you haven’t been part of the July sessions, we invited you to participate in the remaining sessions and embrace a deeper love for our God who is Still-Speaking! Steve made a shift in the dates to accommodate a visit to help his youngest daughter with her new baby boy in Texas. Please note the dates for August.
Embrace the opportunity to deepen our faith and enjoy a fresh time of learning is perfect for your Wednesday evenings this summer. This special summer series invites you to step into Room
201 (Sanctuary/Office level) for supper (salads and sandwiches), study, and a sacred safe space where spiritual senses are stirred and sharpened. Savor a summer evening of sharing designed to stir your soul and strengthen your spiritual walk.
The book How to Study the Bible and Enjoy It by Skip Heitzig comprises eight chapters, each designed to guide readers through a comprehensive and engaging approach to Bible study.
• Deciphering the Bible
• Finding the Right Tools
• Getting Started
• Observation: Opening Your Eyes • Interpretation: Opening Your Mind • God’s Creative Writing
• Application: Opening Your Heart • Practicing What We’ve Preached
The chapters collectively provide a structured framework for participants to delve into the Scriptures, emphasizing the importance of observation, interpretation, and application in the study process. This is not a Bible Study, but rather a fresh way to look at HOW we study God’s Word to find greater meaning from the ancient word and our Still Speaking God.
Save the dates and sign up today to take part in this special summer study series!

Worship, Love and Serve - No Matter What!
An Announcement Most-Musical (and Slightly Scandalous)
From the Pen of Lord Whistledown
My Dearest Readers,
It is with no small amount of interest (and perhaps a raised eyebrow or two) that I bring you the season’s most tantalizing development: The return of St. John’s Music Ministry!
Yes, the bells shall toll, the sopranos shall soar, and the altos, tenors, and basses shall sing the right notes without hesitation or delay.
Mark your dance cards, for the Season begins: Thursday, August 21, 2025 with both bells and choir!
Bell Ringers at 6pm — Those with a penchant for punctuality and polished hand-eye coordination are cordially invited to clamor melodiously. Gloves are a must. Drama discouraged.
Choir at 7pm — If you can carry a tune (or at least appear confident doing so), this is your cue to arrive, open your choral Folio, and dazzle heaven itself.
Who Should Attend?
Those whose voices are as angelic as the cherubim... or at least louder than the organ. Gentlemen brave enough to sing in the presence of altos. Altos brave enough to harmonize without stealing the spotlight from our Queens of the night. And anyone who has ever thought, “Well, how hard can it be to ring a bell?”
What to Bring: Your voice and your spirit!
Do not let it be said that you stood silently while others sang your praises.
To join, you have two options, using the latest technology in what most readers will call an email, (I prefer weekly correspondences by hand with scented stationary if possible) to the director [email protected] preferably by the beginning of the current month so he does not have a fainting spell by people showing up or option 2, simply be bold and daring by presenting yourself on the aforementioned Thursday, (it may not win points from the director, but he will simply need to get over it) locate the nearest piano, and declare with great conviction: “I have come to make a joyful noise.” (You may curtsy or bow, but it is not strictly required.)
Until then, dear readers, I remain ever vigilant and ever musical.
Your fearless Maestro, Lord Whistledown

Worship, Love and Serve - No Matter What!
A “Safe Space” and “Safe People” for ALL!
Lehigh Valley Pride at the Steel Stacks, August 17, 2-7pm
Have you ever been someplace new and felt a bit out of place
or even uncomfortable? Perhaps you are outside of your normal “comfort zone” of people you know well and experiencing a new group of people for the first time. Whether in a place of worship or
a community event, feeling as if you’re “on the outside” can leave
us feeling unsettled, hesitant or even fearful. We want to express community and help others experience us and others as “safe people” in “safe places.”
On Sunday afternoon, August
17, the Allentown- Bethlehem area will gather to share our embrace and welcome through the Lehigh Valley Pride event at the PNEC booth with other area churches.
If you’ve never taken part in a Pride event, come see what it’s all about and how we can share strength and support. If you know
someone who is LGBTQIA+, come find out how you can embrace more tangible support for them. Discover the solidarity and common ground that is present.
We are bold to say... “You are loved here! You are welcome here! You belong here!” I’m grateful for the people of St. John’s and your heartfelt welcome to all people.
WHOEVER YOU ARE and WHEREVER YOU MAY BE on life's journey, YOU ARE... WELCOME HERE at St. John's UCC, Fullerton!

Easier Access!
The Property Committee has been working to create easier access to our building by having the Grape St. elevator entrance equipped with an auto-opening door. We are grateful for the congregation’s financial support and the generosity of Bob Bold who shared two substantial gifts to both begin and complete the project. We are working to make our facilities and worship experience more accessible for everyone, and the project should be done by the first week in August with updated security access integrated into the opening of the door.
If you come to the building during the week, the external doors are locked. Simply push the button at the door to communicate with
a staff member for access. We have the ability to unlock the magnet for access, just as we had previously. Then, press the handicap access button on the separate pole alongside the entry walk and the door will open for you. When leaving the building, simply press and hold the handicap button just to the left of the door for it to open for you. For Sunday operation, or other activities where the building access doors are unlocked, simply press the button to enter or exit.
We hope these additions make St. John’s an easier place to access and be with others and share as We Worship, We Love, We Serve - No Matter What!

Worship, Love and Serve - No Matter What!
With Glad and Generous Hearts
What a blessing to share in a community that gives and grows together! Whether in helping to fund a new project or help support an event, St. John’s has so many people who share themselves with us as well as their resources. Gathered with generous people, our worship is a constant reminder of people helping make things happen so everyone can enjoy the blessings.
Several years ago, Roma Hass made the decision to remember St. John’s in her will. At the time of her passing, the Consistory approved setting aside those funds (we designate them as self-restricted) until such time that we wanted to use them for a special project or purpose. Last month, at the recommendation of the Stewardship and Finance Committee, the Consistory approved the use of $5,000 from that fund to help us invest in another person’s life and ministry, and to invest in our Children’s Faith Formation and Youth Ministries. These funds will provide the stipend for Samantha Kistler, the newest member of St. John’s staff as she has her Field Education Placement with us.
We are excited for what God is doing through people’s generosity and how we can be a blessing for years to come.
I’m grateful for all the ways we share our generosity of spirit and our resources, just like the early faith community did. I rejoice that we give of ourselves “with glad and generous hearts.” (Acts 2:46)
Our gifts make it possible to expand our ministry. Our “automatic contributions” help us sustain our program and expand our outreach, whether we are present in the sanctuary, traveling the world, or sharing our faith from a hospital room. YOU make the difference! Thank you for your sharing of your resources, your time, your talents and your treasure... “with glad and generous hearts.”
The Stewardship and Finance Committee and Rev. Steve Davis

FAITH FORMATION SCHEDULE & WORSHIP CELEBRATIONS

STAY ROOTED AND GROWING THIS SUMMER
Faith formation isn’t just something we do — it’s who we are becoming. It takes many shapes: gathering in a class, reading devotionals in quiet moments, joining small group conversations, or reflecting together online. However it happens, we are created to grow. God planted in us a deep longing — to seek truth, to understand with greater depth, and to connect more meaningfully with God, with one another, and with the world.
At St. John’s, the rhythm of spiritual growth continues year- round. While summer may bring a gentler pace, the journey doesn’t pause. During August, our Sunday morning Faith Formation classes for children and adults continue to take a short break to give our wonderful teachers, volunteers, and facilitators time for rest and renewal. They return in full force September 7!
Growth doesn’t stop with the summer season! This summer,
we invite you into opportunities that nurture your spirit in new and refreshing ways. Whether through special gatherings, resources for reflection, or shared experiences, there are meaningful ways to stay rooted, connected, and inspired.
Let’s embrace the warmth and wonder of the season and continue to be formed by faith, wherever the journey takes us.
Worship, Love and Serve - No Matter What!
PENTECOST SEASON
AND SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE
People of faith have a life-changing and powerful story to tell the world. We have the joy of sharing how we have experienced the Divine One in our daily living. In the season of Pentecost, our story of faith connects with the stories first told after Jesus’ resurrection. The people who followed Jesus then shared their story, and today, we share ours as well. We are still writing the story of God’s unending love for each of us and all the world. As we gather for worship in August, I invite you to imagine receiving letters of love and care for Christ and offering hope and grace for your faith journey.
God’s Spirit was poured out in powerful ways to the people. We share that same Spirit today, still being poured out on us, that we may change the world.
SUNDAY, JULY 27
Outdoor Worship at the St. John’s Pavilion
Colossians 2:6-7
“The Church: Seeing and Being Seen”
Into the Deep! (Pt. 2)
Lectionary Readings:
Hosea 1:2-10 and Psalm 85, Genesis 18:20-32 and Psalm 138, Colossians 2:6-15, (16-19), Luke 11:1-13
While heeding to the call to deeper love, deeper commitments
to justice and deeper spiritual living, we know we cannot be all God intends for us to be alone. Church, it is time for us to trust God and put out “into the deep.” May Jesus’ invitation and way of deeper living be ours in every step of our walk of faith.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 3
Worship with Holy Communion
Colossians 3:1-4, 11
“Dear Children of God!” - Christ is all and in all!
Lectionary Readings:
Hosea 11:1-11 and Psalm 107:1-9, 43; Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23 and Psalm 49:1-12; Colossians 3:1-11; Luke 12:13-21
16
Do we know and embrace the reality that we are unconditionally loved and embraced as God’s children? How does being a loved child of God empower our lives and public witness? As we come to Christ’s table, do we see how Jesus gives us grace to live as loved and forgiven family? The Table welcomes us again and again to remember who we are and celebrate.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 10
Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16
“Dear Children of God!” - Desiring the Better “Out”
Isaiah 1:1, 10-20 and Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23; Genesis 15:1-6 and Psalm 33:12-22;
Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16; Luke 12:32-40
Have you ever had a pet who stood by the door, who constantly longs to go “out” despite the discomforts they often find inside (cold, rain, wind) persistently believing that next time, it will be better. This restless yearning mirrors the deep human desire for something more, something better; a hope that fuels not escapism, but faithful vision. Drawing from Hebrews 11 we center on a sustaining faith that dares to believe in things unseen and hoped for: a better country, a just world, a deeper assurance rooted not in present satisfaction but in the enduring love of God. Like the pets returning to the door, faith urges us to keep longing, believing, and stepping forward toward that better “out.”
SUNDAY, AUGUST 17
Hebrews 11:29-12:2
“Dear Children of God!” - For the Sake of Joy
Isaiah 5:1-7; Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19; Hebrews 11:29-12:2; Luke 12:49-56
Joy, like faith, can be elusive yet powerful. More than just an emotion, it’s a deep, sustaining force tied to purpose, modeled by Jesus, and rooted in community. Though we often focus on Jesus’ suffering, Scripture reminds us that joy was part of what sustained him: “for the sake of the joy set before him, he endured the cross.” Joy doesn’t wait for hardship to pass. It shows up amid struggle, pointing us toward the reality of God’s dream. It’s not something we manufacture or force in worship, but something we make room for: through story, song, prayer,
17
Worship, Love and Serve - No Matter What!
and connection. Practicing joy means creating space for the Spirit to surprise us, to lift us, and to remind us, through community and presence, that the joy set before us is real, lasting, and already breaking in.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 24
Jeremiah 1:4-10 and Psalm 71:1-6
“Dear Children of God!” - Cannot Be Shaken
Jeremiah 1:4-10 and Psalm 71:1-6; Isaiah 58:9b-14 and Psalm 103:1-8; Hebrews 12:18-29; Luke 13:10-17
The familiar children’s song about building your house on the rock holds a deeper truth: storms will come, and our foundation matters. This week’s message from Hebrews invites us not to ask whether we’ve built our house on the Rock, but how we will continue to build our home in the unshakeable Triune God, especially through worship. Worship isn’t just ritual; it’s the communal work of creating home in Christ, week by week, through song, prayer, and proclamation. It invites us to celebrate our shared identity, stretch into mystery, and confront injustice, allowing God’s refining fire to shape us into a people rooted in God’s “kindom.” All voices, especially those often unheard, are vital in building this home together.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 31
Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16 and Psalm 81:1, 10-16
“Dear Children of God!” - Let Love Flow
Jeremiah 18:1-11 and Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18; Deuteronomy 30:15-20 and Psalm 1; Philemon 1:1-21; Luke 14:25-33
Hebrews 13:2 is often read as a reminder to be kind just in case a stranger is secretly an angel, but this message becomes richer and more grounded when connected to the preceding verse: “Let mutual love continue.” Rather than a call to cautious politeness, it’s an invitation to recognize every person, especially the difficult ones, as image-bearers of God and potential messengers of grace. Worship, then, becomes
a space where we practice this mutual love honestly, acknowledging how hard it can be while embracing God’s grace that meets us as we are. Through song, prayer, proclamation, and Communion, we shape a community that doesn’t just talk about love but learns to live it together.

Called to Serve With Love
Samantha joins us from Moravian Seminary as she completes her ministry training.
My name is Samantha Kistler, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to serve with you during my supervised ministry placement at St. John’s. I’m currently a Master of Ministry student at Moravian Theological Seminary. While I’ll be working primarily with the youth of the church, I am very much so looking forward
to worshiping alongside you and getting to know the whole congregation during my time here.
I live in Lehighton with my husband, Michael, and our two daughters, Brynley, who is 9, and Adalynn, who is 7. I’ve worked in education for the past 15 years as both a classroom teacher and an administrator. Right now, I’m a high school special education teacher, a role I find both challenging and deeply meaningful.
My call to ministry is rooted in a deep love for Christian education and a desire to walk alongside others in their faith journeys. I believe spiritual accompaniment and learning are vital not only for individual growth, but for nurturing faith across generations. I’m especially passionate about helping young people explore their identity in Christ and discover how they are called to serve in the world.
This season of learning and ministry is a gift, and I’m excited to see how God will work in and through us in the months ahead. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly!

Welcome Samantha
Samantha Kistler begins her Field Education Placement with us From August thru May when she completes her seminary training. She will continue with us in June and July, and then she plans to be ordained. At that time, our plan is for Samantha to continue with us at St. John’s as our part-time Assistant Minister for an additional year (maybe more) as the Spirit guides us all.
Your financial support and encouragement will make her continuing ministry with us possible. We are beginning to show signs of greater financial health and church vitality at St. John’s. God is doing something in us and through us and we are grateful! “God is good all the time! And all the time God is good!” is more than an affirmation. This reality presents God’s steadfast faithfulness to us in so many ways. We thank you and join you in welcoming “Sam” to partner with us in great strength and ministry.
Thinking About The Children & Youth
St. John’s has great people! Some of our great people share their time and talents, and their willingness to be a witness of faith to our children and youth. In both Sunday morning children’s faith formation and in Confirmation classes, we present the good news of God’s love for us in Christ. It doesn’t just happen., YOU make it happen by volunteering to help lead and assist.
You don’t need to be the parent, just a person of faith who loves children and is willing to give one Sunday every two months to be part of the faith formation time when the children leave worship after the children’s message to have an age appropriate lesson for them. You may also choose to help with the Confirmation class as a helper, mentor or teacher for one of the lessons.
Visit with Pastor Steve or Samantha “Sam” Kistler if you’d like more information. We know there are more people out there that can help. Will you be one of the people who changes a young person’s life with love and faith? Share your generosity and “No Matter What” spirit by serving with the love of Christ.

Dear Members and Friends,
Once again, the coalition of churches that makes up the Whitehall Food Pantry, gratefully acknowledges your generous contributions of food and money throughout the year. With the increased cost of food and the reduction of available food from Second Harvest, your contributions are more important than ever. Your continued support of the mission we share is what allows
us to continue the work of sharing God’s love. Our patrons are grateful and we, the board and volunteers of the Whitehall Food Pantry, are extremely thankful.
God Bless You,
Judy Ehret, Whitehall Food Pantry

St. John’s Bazaar is Coming to Fox Hall!
Saturday, November 8, from 9am to 2 pm
Do you have items in your home, garage, or shed you no longer use or need? Did you have a Yard Sale this summer with items that didn’t sell? Are you downsizing your living space and need to get rid of things you no longer have room for? Do you like to shop at flea markets or collect specialty items? Are you looking for craft items as gifts for your family or friends or even for yourself? Are you looking for a good place to eat? If you answered yes to any of those questions, St. John’s has the perfect solution.
Fox Hall will become a bustling marketplace with something for everyone. At our Bazaar you will find these departments with items to sell: St. John’s crafts, jewelry, attic treasures, dishes, glassware, pots & pans, kitchenware, CDs, baked goods, candy, books, knickknacks, working appliances, small furniture, purses, seasonal décor, toys
and games. If you have and no longer want things that fits those categories, please bring them to the church starting in August 1. All sales, except for 10% tithing for Mission, will go St. John’s. Items we are NOT collecting are: clothing, encyclopedias, magazines, records, bowling balls, computers, monitors, printers.
Under the direction of head chef Bill Fink, the kitchen will be open where you’ll find a selection of food to purchase. Stay for lunch or take something home for a supper meal.
If you would like more information on this event, have a question on what we are collecting, need items to be picked up, or would like to volunteer to help, please contact our Co-chairs Amy Feidler and Carol Raszler. KEYSTONE CONFERENCE of the UCC
Dear Keystone Friends,
With full hearts and joy filled spirits, we are thrilled to announce the historic passage of the motion to create the Keystone Conference of the United Church of Christ! By a vote of 98% (640 in favor, 8 opposed, 6 abstentions), delegates of the 35th General Synod approved the realignment of our Conference boundaries. This moment marks the culmination of several years of faithful discernment, courageous conversation, and a shared vision for the future of our ministry in Pennsylvania. Together, we have dared to believe that God is still speaking — and calling us into something new.
The creation of the Keystone Conference is more than a structural shift; it is a bold witness to our commitment to covenant, collaboration, and the continuing call of the Holy Spirit. We honor the legacy of those who have gone before us in each of our four Conferences
and rejoice in the new pathways and possibilities now open to us. We give thanks for the Keystone Working Group, Conference staffs, and all who labored, prayed, and dreamed this into being. And we move forward with gratitude, humility, and a renewed passion for the Gospel.
We trust that the One who began a good work among us will be faithful to complete it.
In faith and hope,
Bill Worley, Bonnie Bates, Carrie Call, David Ackerman

Synod Approves Formation of New Keystone Conference
With a 98% affirmative vote (640–8, with 6 abstentions) and no debate, the 35th General Synod approved the formation of the new Keystone Conference, uniting the Penn West, Penn Central, Pennsylvania Southeast, and Penn Northeast Conferences.
Delegates from the four Conferences arrived in matching “Together We are Stronger” T-shirts and celebrated the moment with cheers, embraces, and the passing of the peace. The four Conference Ministers — Revs. Carrie Call, Bonnie Bates, David Ackerman,
and William Worley — called the decision “a bold witness to our commitment to covenant, collaboration, and the continuing call of the Holy Spirit.”
“This moment marks the culmination of several years of faithful discernment and a shared vision for ministry in Pennsylvania,” they said in a joint statement. “We honor the legacy of our four Conferences and rejoice in the new pathways now open to us.”
28
Rev. Steve Davis of the Penn Northeast Conference called the overwhelming support “an incredible affirmation” of a three-year process. Leading up to the vote, the Keystone delegates received handwritten cards and prayers from the Southern New England Conference, which had undergone a similar merger in 2019.
Rev. Diann Baxley of Penn Central, a member of the Keystone Working Group, said the experience has been deeply moving. “We’re going to be able to serve all of our associations and churches so much better,” she said, hoping their experience can guide others.
The new Conference’s name honors Pennsylvania’s nickname and the symbolic strength of a keystone — something that holds everything together. It also reflects the Conference’s regional breadth, which includes churches in Maryland and New Jersey.
Rev. Carrie Call offered a simple message to other Conferences: “We all need to be doing this. We all need to come together.”
The Keystone Conference board will begin meeting Aug. 1, aiming to have transitional staff in place ahead of the official launch on Jan. 1, 2026.
Rev. Becky Sausser of Penn North said the process revealed both shared values and distinct gifts. “We genuinely are stronger together,” she said.

Rev. Dr. Bonnie Bates is the Penn Northeast Conference Minister
Dear Friends,
I have spent the last several days with our delegation at the 35th General Synod. We have had conversations, debates, educational intensives, committee meetings and hearings, shared in worship and celebrations. The UCC coming together from across the nation is always exciting. The depth and breadth of our denomination, our experiences, our challenges, and our joys, are seen clearly in these days of joining together. For me, it is always a joy to see and hear from my siblings in faith, to know our commitment to following Jesus, and our appreciation for one another.
You will note later in this issue of This Week that we passed resolutions of witness around several justice issues, defeated
bylaws changes to unify the staff and governance structures of the denomination, and called a settled Associate General Minister for Love of Neighbor, Rev. Shari Prestemon. In celebration, our motion to merge into the Keystone Conference was enthusiastically approved and the resolution for formal recognition of the Small Town and Rural Church Coalition (STAR) was also approved. There is joy in my heart whenever we come together in ways that broaden the voice of our church and our conferences.
30
I am proud of our denomination and of our own PNEC delegation as we worked together, sometimes disagreeing but always trying to be respectful and understanding of our various voices and views. There were times of contention as often happens when there are more than two people in a room, but we navigated our work well together. We deepened our relationships, and our understandings of one another in this meeting, as usually happens. The scripture and theme “Into the Deep” moved us to reflect in the deepness of our minds, hearts, and spirits, so we could be the church together.
I am always so proud of all we do, of our voices being heard and our hearts being opened. There are moments of misunderstanding, but together we are the church. Together we move into the future that influences and challenges us. Together we strive to become all we are called to be. Together we walk, arm in arm, holding one another, leading one another, following one another, loving one another. Together we are the Church. And as we in Keystone proclaim, “Together We Are Stronger.”
“When he (Jesus) had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch’” Luke 5:4, NIV
~~Blessings, Bonnie

Calling All Readers And Liturgists
As we move into fall, St. John’s is working to grow our list of volunteers by adding additional Readers and Liturgists for Sunday services.
The Liturgist assists the pastor in leading worship - not just by reading scripture, but by actively guiding the congregation through various parts of the service. This may include leading prayers, calls to worship, scripture readings, and other worship elements.
The Reader is a volunteer from the congregation who proclaims the scripture readings during the service.
If you’re interested in serving in either of these roles, please contact Patrick at [email protected] or call the church office at extension 13.
We welcome volunteers of all ages—youngest to oldest—to consider being part of this meaningful ministry!
“Be the Church”
Dale Serfass Helping at Phobe Ministries
As a way to give back to staff at Phoebe, St. John’s member Dale Serfass prepares the rooms in which programs, activities, worship services, and other events take place. Doing so entirely on his own accord and often without staff knowing, Dale has given activity coordinators some day-to-day relief.
On another occasion, when Dale noticed that the Morning Call newspapers weren’t being delivered due to the elevator being out of service, he took it upon himself to hand-deliver them to the appropriate residents. “It’s just something I like to do,” says Serfass. Although staff never expect his help, he continues to do so out of the kindness of his heart.
In 2021, on a particularly stormy January morning resulting in 30 inches of snow, Dale assisted the maintenance team in clearing snow off the sidewalks, parking lots, and cars of his fellow residents. This act of selflessness was performed mere weeks after Dale moved in.
32
Though the maintenance team insisted that the help wasn’t necessary, Dale refused to stand by and watch.
“Dale is a great asset to our community,” says Phoebe Apartments Service Coordinator Cristal Polanco, a sentiment
that virtually every staff member in the building echoes. In this picture, Dale is with Melissa Dejesus, a worker in the housekeeping department at Phoebe. “We call him the sheriff of the apartments,” says Melissa. “He looks out for the building.”
Doubling down on his involvement in the Phoebe community, Dale serves as the Treasurer on the Resident Council Board at the Phoebe Apartments. He has also done substantial volunteer work outside of Phoebe with both the Iron Pigs and the Allentown Fair. You can find Dale every Sunday morning here at St. John’s as he serves on our church choir.

A Summer of Generosity
As we prepare to launch our new Program Year on the first Sunday in September, we give thanks for the steady light of your generosity that continues to fuel the ministry of St. John’s. Whether through mission support, community outreach, or church events, your giving brings to life our shared vision of love, compassion, and justice. Each month, our Stewardship and Finance Committee highlights the impact of your gifts, reminding us that we are shaping a church that not only nurtures those within our walls but also reaches out to serve the wider world. Thank you for helping us make a real difference.
As we enjoy the blessings of summer with rest, renewal, and time with loved ones, we also look ahead with hope and determination. Our goal is not only to sustain the vibrant ministry we’ve built together but to grow it, reaching more people with Christ’s message of love. This growth depends on all of us. Will you consider increasing your giving or becoming an automatic contributor this year? Automatic giving offers a simple, reliable way to support our ministry through every season. Michelle Gutekunst and our team are ready to help you get started. Every gift, no matter the size, helps build a faithful, vibrant community responding to God’s call with open hearts and outstretched hands. Thank you for all you do!

We Hear You!
Your opinions and helpful critiques benefit the whole St. John’s community. Our Elders meet with Pastor Steve every month to share how we can navigate the waters of our faith experience together
with love and strength. Your voice matters and Wendy Fox, Colleen Kulhamer and Paul Raszler along with Pastor Steve appreciate your participation and willingness to help us have a more vital and open communication. As the Church, with many human relationships, strong opinions and thoughts, the relationship we have to speak the truth in love is our sacred responsibility. Thank you for helping us be better together as we worship, we love and we serve...

Texas Flood Relief Efforts
We’ve all seen in the newspaper and on television the catastrophic flooding that occurred in Texas as well as in other parts of the country in early July. As this newsletter goes to press, 129 people have been confirmed dead in Texas, including 27 campers and counselors at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. Hundreds of rescuers, many of them volunteers, have scoured miles of destruction areas searching for over 160 still missing.
The Disaster Ministries Team of the United Church of Christ has been in contact with the South Central Conference of the UCC to monitor the situation and determine how to best support recovery efforts. It is through the generosity of the wider church that makes it possible to help people now with disasters like this and to give them assistance for long-term recovery. Contributions made to Disaster Ministries will be used in full (100%) to assist the victims of this flood and other flood-like disasters.
