At EIA, we look to engage our students in a wide variety of activities
that support and enrich their spiritual life, moral growth and character
development. Over time these activities have grown to include an annual
Umrah Trip, One Ummah Celebration, Qur’an and Hadith Competition, Hajj
Play, Ramadan Food Drive, community service projects, and many other
events and charitable drives led by our students and teachers. Several
students this year have demonstrated deep commitment and leadership by
staying after school to train, write, and then ultimately lead one (or more) of
our Jumu’ah Khutbas.

Additionally, we have initiated some new activities we hope to continue
and develop. For instance, every Friday a student has recited the first ten
ayat of Surah al-Kahf during our Morning Du’a. This new tradition has
allowed students to train and then demonstrate their skills in tajwid while
encouraging a sunnah of our Prophet (peace be upon him). We have also
established an Islamic Leadership Club composed of nearly sixty students
who have been trained and scheduled daily to provide the call to prayer
(adhan) and iqamah. Moreover, during Ramadan students were invited to
read a hadith (in English and Arabic) during our Morning Du’a, which was
then followed by a short reminder on the importance of Ramadan.

Our junior high and high school students have also had visits this year from
local gems, such as Mahdi Qasqas (a Muslim psychologist) and Sadique
Pathan (a Muslim social worker). Each of whom provided our students with
unique lessons, motivating talks, and faith-based support throughout the
year. We have even had the pleasure of hosting visiting scholars such as
Shaykh Saad Tasleem and Shaykh Faraz Rabbani to lead our Jumu’ah prayer
and stay after for discussion with students.

And, finally, we have also been blessed this year with Shaykh Mahmoud Omar,
who has joined EIA as a Scholar-in-Residence. He has worked closely this
year with our high school students; leading classes, offering brief reminders
after prayer, and leading several of our field trips.

We are excited to see what the new academic year will bring. However, we
recognize that faith education is not limited to what is taught in school. Faith
is demonstrated and taught best through how honorably we each act and
serve others in our daily lives. Whether we are parents, teachers, or students,
we are each a role-model for someone in our lives. May Allah bless each of us
to be the best role-models we can be.

at EIA Alberta Education recognizes that students are
the artists, scientists, thinkers, innovators and
leaders of the future. In complement, the Edmonton
Islamic Academy offers a high quality education
embedded in the values of Islam, to enable students
to become respectful, responsible, successful, leaders
and contributors to society. As active partners in
their learning, every student is valued to have the
opportunity to demonstrate these attributes in the
classroom, on the stage, on the court, on the field or
in the larger community. Through the rich learning
experiences and a rigorous curriculum program, all
learners have ample opportunities to develop the
competencies needed to function as a successful
Muslim in wider society.

In reflection of the 2016-17 academic year, the
triangulated partnership, parents- student-teacher,
accomplished significant successes. Students were
immersed with the bounties of Islamic knowledge
and academic experiences, as they strive to deepen
their understanding of their roles as leaders and
contributors to society. A day in the life of a student of
Edmonton Islamic Academy does not go by without-
the remembrance of their Lord in full submission,
insightful readings to develop deep thinking,
academic and non-academic challenges to enhance
critical thinking skills, experiential learning to foster
citizenship, collaborative moments to strengthen
effective communication.

In progressing to sustain a high quality education
embedded in Islamic values, our educators endeavor
to make learning more developmentally appropriate
and engaging, through informed best practices and
sound educational researches. Ultimately, it is our
obligation to recognize that all successes are from
Allah (swt), through the efforts of our determined
students, supportive parents and committed teachers.
Jazakum Allahu Khair.
