Avianti Armand has been working as an architect since 1992. Her home design, Kampong House,
won IAI (Indonesian Association of Architects) Award in 2008. Since 2008, she has actively written

The book traces the life and works of Friedrich Silaban, the most important figure in
Indonesian architecture. Trained as a draughtsman during the late colonial period,
he took up the challenge to be the architect of the new country. He won important
national building design competitions and caught the attention of Soekarno, the first
president of Indonesia. From then on, Silaban was in-charge of designing numerous
buildings of national significance; institutional as well as monumental edifices.
Silaban was one of the closest acquaintances of Soekarno and together they
determined how Jakarta–the capital of Indonesia–was developed and beautified
during the 1950s and 1960s. By explaining the relevant historical contexts, this book
highlights the cultural-political and the professional influences that were happening
during his lifetime.
Setiadi Sopandi is an architect, a lecturer, and independent scholar. He has engaged in scholarly
works, publications, and architectural exhibitions. He wrote, Sejarah Arsitektur: Sebuah
Pengantar (Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2013), an introduction to global architectural history. He
co-curated international architectural shows; the Indonesia Pavilion in The 14th International
Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia (2014) and “ Tropicality: Revisited” at the Deutsches
Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt (2015). From 2007 he has been curating the Friedrich Silaban Archive.
He co-authored the book “Rumah Silaban/ Silaban’s House” (mAAN Indonesia Publishing, 2008). He
was granted a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council in 2016.

Tarumanegara University from 1978–1983. In 1978, Tedjasukmana officially became a member of
IAI (Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia). After years of working on different firms, he founded KIAT Architects
in 1987. KIAT Architects has done many projects both in Indonesia and abroad, and has become a
pioneer of residential architecture for diplomatic needs, such as residences for Ambassadors of
Indonesia-Swedia, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, and a few other countries.

Dr. Oei Hong Djien, born in 1939 in Magelang, Indonesia, is the founder and curator of OHD Museum
which is a private museum open for public. He has been collecting for almost 40 years. He was an
honorar y advisor to the Singapore Ar t Museum, 2001–2005, member of the Singapore Ar t Museum
Board, 2005–2009 and advisor of the National Art Gallery Singapore for Indonesian art, 2010–2012.
He was the curator of Museum H. Widayat, Magelang, Indonesia, 1994–2009, Member of Yogyakarta
Biennale, 2011–2018. He has written many essays on ar t and collecting ar t, some books, and curated
exhibitions.

Fadly Rahman was born in Bogor on 27 November 1981. Amidst his activities as a lecturer at the
History Department at Universitas Padjajaran, Bandung, West Java, he frequently writes historical
pieces for Kompas and Republika newspapers. Having worked as an editor of history textbooks, he
started to become interested in culinary history and did his research in Rijsttafel in 2006. He was
a contributor for Indonesian Food (Anova Publisher, 2008) written by Sri Owen, and The Oxford

Floating Threads represents an attempt to catalog float weave techniques used to
decorate cloth throughout the archipelago and hints at possible lines of distribution.
Float weaves are made by the threads running one way in a fabric that skipped over
a calculated number of threads running the opposite direction to create little motifs.
Goldthread songket, in which an extra or supplementary (gold) thread in the weft
direction is floated over threads in the opposite (warp) direction to create patterns,
is the most outstanding of these regarding luxuriousness and exposure. The all-
cotton pathudu of East Sumba, in which an extra or supplementary warp is floated
over wefts to create more exotic and attention-getting motifs, is another example.
Judi Achjadi, a Canadian, came to Indonesia in 1958. She then became the wife of an Indonesian
diplomat and then Indonesian citizen soon afterward. She has spent the rest of her personal life
studying traditional Indonesian clothing, of which traditional textiles are an essential component.
Judi says she came in at an opportune time when usage of the Western fashion was increasing
exponentially, but there were still elderly experts wanting to pass on their knowledge so that this
great craftsmanship will pass on to the next generations. Judi has written many articles and books,
including the Glory of Batik: The Danar Hadi Collection, Exquisite Indonesia: The Finest Crafts of the
Archipelago and Batik Spirit of Indonesia.

This work of Onghokham and Amen Budiman is a comprehensive study of the
origin of tobacco and its spread around the world. It is an exciting introduction to
Javanese society-the birthplace of the kretek tobacco industry.
Tobacco entered Java in 1523 Saka or around 1601-1602 CE, coinciding with the
departure of Panembahan Senopati, the Sultan Agung’s father. The discovery of
kretek itself-a mixture of tobacco and clover-was initially intended as a medication
for shortness of breath by Haji Jamhari. Because of high demand, Haji Jamhari
founded the first kretek tobacco company, the first of many that would grow to
become titans of Indonesian industry. This is how the tobacco industry started in
Kudus, Java.
Amen Budiman (1948-1986) was a prolific writer of history and culture. He had written around 60
books. They include Sejarah Masyarakat Islam Tionghoa di Indonesia (The History of the Chinese
Islamic Society in Indonesia/1974), Babad Dipanegara (Legend of Dipanegara/1980), and Wali Sanga:

Onghokham (1933-2007) earned his doctorate degree from Yale University. His published books

Descendants in Java/2005).

During the period from 1965 to 1966, one of the worst tragedies of humanity
occurred in Indonesia. Between five hundred thousand and a million people were
massacred after being accused of being communist supporters. The international
dimensions of these events have never previously been evaluated. Although
considered a domestic affair, the communist purge happened in the context of the
global Cold War. Foreign nations were not neutral observers: they were supporters
of different factions in line with their interests, and all of them blamed each other for
the ensuing tragedy.
Baskara T. Wardaya is a Jesuit priest and an Indonesian historian. He obtained his doctorate in
history from Marquette University in 2001; his thesis was on American-Indonesian relationships
during the Eisenhower and Kennedy eras. He taught History and Philosophy of History at Sanata
Dharma University and Gadjah Mada University. He has written articles about Indonesian history in
the media and works as a part-time researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). He is
the founder and director of the Centre for History and Political Ethics (Pusdep).
Bernd Schaefer is a Cold War International History Project Senior Research Scholar. Previously, he
was a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington DC and the Hannah Arendt
Institute at the Technical University of Dresden. He ser ved for four years as a secretar y for the
East German Catholic Church’s Stasi lustration commission in Berlin and is a a former fellow of the

Thirteen centuries ago, a team of unknown artisans and priests worked together
to build a megastructure from massive stones on sacred land in Central Java that
was surrounded by several volcanoes. The original constructors were very aware
that they would not be able to witness the completion of this megastructure, but
they had faith that future generations would improve, honor, and preserve their
magnificent creation. Borobudur: Human Heritage describes the archeological,
historical, spiritual, cultural, scientific, aesthetic, economic, and political values of
Chandi Borobudur. It also resolved the mystery of the Unfinished Buddha.
Dr. Daoed Joesoef was born in Medan, 8 August 1926. He completed his two doctorates at Université
Pluridisciplinaire de Paris, I Panthéon-Sorbonne (1964-1972). He was appointed Minister of Education
and Culture in the Third Development Cabinet (1978-1983). He has written several books, including
Borobudur and also a memoir dedicated to his mother, Emak (Mama). He was awarded Commandeur
de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Government in 1983. In March 2015, he received
a letter of recognition from His Holiness the Dalai Lama for his efforts in securing UNESCO funds to
safeguard Borobudur Temple as a human heritage.

The end of 19th to mid 20th century was the golden age of postcards. At the
time when the telephone was rare and expensive to use, people used postcards
to communicate with each other. A lot of private printing houses created and
distributed beautiful picturesque postcards that would suit the customers’ desires.
It is fascinating that postcards can give us an overview of an era that has slipped
away from media attention. This book displays 277 postcards collected by the
author that will invite the readers to contemplate the history of 44 cities that spread
out from west to east Java.

Andreas Harsono began his career as a reporter for the Jakarta Post, Bangkok-based Nation, and
the Kuala Lumpur-based Star newspapers. In the 1990s he helped establish Jakarta’s Alliance of
Independent Journalists, then an illegal group under the Suharto regime. He was also a founder of
the Institute for the Studies on Free Flow of Information and the Pantau Foundation media training
group, as well as the South East Asia Press Alliance in Bangkok. He was a Nieman Fellow on
Journalism at Harvard University. Since 2008, he has covered Indonesia for Human Rights Watch.

Memoar Pulau Buru is journalist Hersri Setiawan’s autobiographical accounting of
his life as a political prisoner in Buru Island from 1969-1978. Implicated as a member
of the failed communist coup in 1965, Hersri and his fellow political inmates had
to endure inhumane treatments in this forsaken facility. Sexual, physical, and
emotional abuses were a daily occurrence for those who managed to stay alive to
avoid crass burial by the beach.

Hersri Setiawan was born 3 May 1936 in Yogyakarta. He represented Indonesia in the Asia-Africa
Writers Association in Colombo, Sri Lanka (1961-1965). When Setiawan returned home, he was
dragged into the dark events of September 1965. Eventually, he was captured and became a political
prisoner of the New Order (1969-1978). Following his release from Buru Island, bearing the label
of an ex-political prisoner, Hersri Setiawan worked as an anonymous writer, editor, and translator,
living under surveillance and further repressed by those in power. He lived in exile in the Netherlands
between 1987 and 2004, after which he returned to Indonesia.

Iwan Simatupang is an author that is famous for his novels, poems, and short
stories. He is also a playwright. Mr. Simatupang has been writing essays about

Iwan Simatupang studied anthropology and drama at Leiden University in the Netherlands and
philosophy at the Sorbonne, France. He then returned to Indonesia and married a Dutch pianist.
He went on to write The Pilgrim (1969), The Redness of Red (1968), and Drought (1972). The Redness
of Red won a national literar y award in 1970, and in 1977, The Pilgrim was awarded the First ASE AN
Literary Award. Iwan Simatupang also wrote many poems, short stories, and plays—all notable for
their avant-garde form. He was also a journalist, his columns frequently focusing on Indonesia’s
marginalized communities.
