My Friend The
Terrorist?

[Temanku Teroris?]

Non Ficiton Catalogue

“A profound yet very personal journalistic investigation….” —A. Fuadi, Author of The Land of 5 Towers
“A narrative style like Akira Kurosawa’s famous film Rashomon makes this book a compelling
read.” —Riri Riza, Movie director

My Friend the Terrorist? provides a detailed and vivid view into the issue of terrorism
from an unprejudiced perspective. The author is a counterterrorism expert who is
involved in the rehabilitation of former extremists. Noor Huda and Fadlullah Hasan
started to study at Ngruki Islamic Boarding School at a very young age. Many years
had gone by before fate finally reunited them. Noor Huda was a journalist, whereas
Fadlullah Hasan was a criminal arrested for terrorism allegations. This is a story of
how two Islamic boarding school graduates decided to use their common training
to pursue two very diverging purposes. Noor Huda tells his and Fadlullah Hasan’s
story with empathy and sympathy that will challenge our perspective concerning
terrorism, jihad, Islam, and the meaning of friendship.

Noor Huda Ismail finished his Master’s Degree for International Security at St. Andrews University,
Scotland in 2006 after receiving a British Chevening Scholarship. The former special correspondent
for the Southeast Asia bureau of The Washington Post was a researcher’s assistant at The National
Center for Scientific Research, Paris and Law School of University of Melbourne, Australia. He’s also
appeared on various international media such as Al-Jazeera T V, ABC T V Australia, T V5 France, BBC,
CNN, and many more. He now lives in Australia with his wife and two sons while doing his Ph.D. at
Monash University Melbourne. Noor Huda currently produces a documentary film called Jihad Selfie.

[Menggelinding 1]

When he started his career as an author, Indonesian literary legend Pramoedya
Ananta Toer produced many poems, short stories, and essays that were published in
various journals and magazines. Astuti Ananta Toer recently compiled these pieces
into a collection entitled Menggelinding. Menggelinding provides a captivating look
into an author’s journey to find his original voice.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1925 -2006) was born in Blora, Central Java. He was incarcerated for three years
during the Dutch colonial times, for two years during the reign of President Soekarno, and for fourteen years
during the reign of President Soeharto. He wrote more than fifty books, which have been translated into some
forty-two languages. Pramoedya received numerous international awards, including the PEN Freedom to Write
Award in 1988, the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1995, the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize in 2000, the Norwegian
Authors Union Award in 2003, and the Pablo Neruda Award in 2004. He is the only Indonesian author to have been
nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

“A haunting record of a great writer’s attempt to keep his imagination and his humanity alive.”

—The New York Times Book Review

“A story too vast and serious to ignore.” —San Francisco Chronicle (front page review)

From the author of the Buru Quartet and one of the greatest writers of our time comes a
remarkable memoir of imprisonment and survival. In 1965, Pramoedya Ananta Toer was
detained by Indonesian authorities and eventually exiled to the penal island of Buru. Without a
formal accusation or trial, the former national hero was imprisoned on Buru for eleven years.
He survived under brutal conditions while somehow managing to produce his masterpiece, the
four novels of the Buru Quartet, as well as the remarkable journal entries, essays, and letters
that comprise this moving memoir. Reminiscent of the work of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The
Mute’s Soliloquy is a harrowing portrait of a penal colony and a heartbreaking remembrance
of life before it. With a resonance far beyond its particular time and place, it is Pramoedya’s
crowning achievement–a passionate tribute to the freedom of the mind and a celebration of
the human spirit.

From Jail to Jail

[Dari Penjara ke Penjara]

Non Ficiton Catalogue

“A most influential book that offers a great contribution to our national identity.” —Tempo

Tan Malaka’s purpose in life was to ignite the revolutionary fire within the hearts of his
fellow Indonesians. For this author, his nation’s freedom from foreign colonization is
worth the prize of his liberty.

Dari Penjara ke Penjara was initially published in two separate volumes. The first
one covers Mr. Malaka’s imprisonment in the Dutch East Indies and the Philippines.
The second volume tells of his ‘travel’ from Shanghai to Hongkong and all the way
back home. This latest edition combines both volumes into a single book.

Tan Malaka was an Indonesian nationalist activist and communist leader. A staunch critic of both
the colonial Dutch East Indies government and the Sukarno administration, he was also frequently in
conflict with the leadership of the Communist Par ty of Indonesia (PKI). Tan Malaka spent a large par t
of his life in exile and was constantly threatened with arrest by the Dutch authorities and their allies.
He still managed to play a key intellectual role in linking the international communist movement to
Southeast Asia’s anti-colonial movements. He was declared a “hero of the national revolution” by act
of Indonesia’s parliament in 1963.

Indonesia South
Sea Pearls

Non Ficiton Catalogue

Pearls have been cherished by humanity since ancient times. Now, the allure of
this extraordinary miracle, an exquisite gem created by a living animal, is as strong
as ever, judging by the multibillion-dollar pearl industry. South Sea pearls–among
the rarest of cultured pearls–are renowned for their soft iridescence, satiny luster,
and generous size. Moreover, the most beautiful South Sea pearls are exclusively
produced in Indonesia, which is itself the biggest producer of South Sea pearls in the
world. Indonesian South Sea pearls are hidden treasures, waiting to be discovered
by Indonesians and foreigners alike.

As the daughter of an Indonesian diplomat, Ingrid Mutiara Sutardjo spent much of her childhood
abroad, such as in Austria where she later returned to pursue a college degree. Ingrid’s mother and
grandmother were pearl connoisseurs, which may explain why her middle name is Mutiara (pearl in
Indonesian), and why she has always adored pearls. Since her husband, Sharif Cicip Sutardjo, was
appointed as Indonesian Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in 2011, Ingrid has been active in
the Green Environment initiative and has traveled extensively to learn about the Indonesian South
Sea pearling industry and meet pearl farmers across Indonesia.

Nunik Anurningsih co -founded Yayasan Segitiga Terumbu Karang (Coral Triangle Community
Foundation), which provides educational funding for students in Runduma, Wakatobi. Recently, Nunik
started creating exclusive handcrafted jewelry, using Indonesian South Sea Pearls (ISSP) set in silver
and gold, in unique, modern designs inspired by Indonesia’s flora and fauna. She has participated in
exhibitions in Indonesia, UK, USA, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Singapore, and Japan; regularly gives talks
to promote ISSPs; and dreams of building an ISSP museum one day.

17,000 Islands
of Imagination

Non Ficiton Catalogue

From the window of a commercial airliner in flight, Indonesia is a panorama of hues and
textures. But from the window of an automobile, Indonesia is vastly different: a succession of
intriguing artifacts seemingly isolated from one another. These disparate perspectives of the
archipelago are conjoined in the view from a low-flying aircraft. Details on the ground are visible,
while the vantage point is sufficiently lofty to encompass the full splendor of trackless forests,
towering volcanic cones, and endless sea. This book presents the natural grandeur of the land
and sea of Indonesia in a stunning collection of photographs shot from the photographer’s
custom-made microlight; a compelling demonstration that this astonishingly diverse nation is,
in essence, a single, cohesive land, and people.

Jez O’Hare was born in 1966 and moved to Indonesia with his family in 1973. He studied scientific illustration in
the UK before returning to Indonesia permanently in 1988 and acquiring Indonesian citizenship in 1995. Jez has
been a freelance photographer and amateur pilot for over 20 years. A member of FASI, the Indonesian Aero Sports
Federation, his aerial photographs are taken from helicopters, airplanes, and his personal microlight, paramotor,
drones, and kites.

Since becoming a permanent resident of Indonesia in 1980, Jeremy Allan has used his extensive familiarity with
this nation’s culture, society, and history to introduce the people and places of
the Indonesian archipelago to a global readership. Through a variety of media and promotional literature, he has
sought to portray Indonesia in a fair and positive manner and to promote the interests of Indonesian businesses,
cultural and social organizations, and the nation itself.

that Rio has been working on in Bali for the last 30 years. As a long-time resident of
Bali who is almost (but not quite) a Balinese, Rio brings a unique perspective to one
of the most photographed islands in the world, peering beyond the rampant over-
development, and crass commercialization to capture the timeless, intangible spirit
of the place and people.

During three decades as a photographer, Rio Helmi has explored and documented isolated ethnic
groups and remote tribes from around the Indonesian archipelago for international magazines and
books. Rio is based in Ubud, Bali, where he operates a popular cafe and photo gallery.

Politics of
Citizenship in
Indonesia

Non Ficiton Catalogue

The central thesis of this book is that citizenship is a result of resistance movements against
injustice. These resistance movements seek to establish cultural recognition, social and
economic justice, and popular representation. Such movements in Indonesia have ended
mainly engaging with the state through both discursive and non-discursive processes. While
the state should always serve as a common focal point, these resistance movements are still
fragmented across different sectors and socio-economic levels. Developing solidarity among
fragments of these movements is highly significant, yet is still far from being attainable.

Indonesia needs a democracy that not only has sovereign control over public affairs but one
that also contains robust channels and organizations for political representations. It is thus
a foremost concern to transform democracy itself as a means for converting structures of
injustice in society. The development of transformative agendas, organizations, and strategies
remains a continued need and challenge for the realization of citizenship in contemporary
Indonesia.

We often consider democratization as a monolithic2/10/2018 12:59:15PM national program. However, there exist such
discrepancies when it comes to various local democratic processes throughout Indonesia, and
as such, each one of them comes with its unique influences and consequences. Therefore the
study of democracy and democratization must be reinforced with research that emphasizes
local perspective over national ones. This book attempts to examine the diverse problem of
democracy and democratization in various Indonesian localities, while also underscoring the
importance of considering asymmetrical approaches to democratization. Based on eleven
case studies, this book concludes that the varied local regimes in Indonesia can be grouped
into five categories. Through this mapping of local regimes in Indonesia, this book proposes a
more substantial way to reset democratization in Indonesia so that it will become more than
just another electoral democracy.

The Politics of
Welfare: Contested
Welfare Regimes in
Indonesia

Has democracy in Indonesia brought about welfare for its citizens? If yes, how does
it work? What types of channels to materialize welfare program for citizens? Also,
how does this effort work at the local level?

This book attempts to answer those above questions, by focusing on the so-called
“welfare regime” at the local level in Indonesia. The research was conducted in
seven areas, ranging from labor sector in Bekasi West Java, humanitarian in post-
disaster areas in Aceh, rural and agriculture based area in Kulon Progo Yogyakarta,
a multicultural city of Medan North Sumatra, operated by religious/communal
institutions, and market, rather than democratic channels such as political parties.

Most Indonesians consider the 1955 Asia Africa Conference to be the country’s
success story in organizing an international level conference. That is because most
historical books rarely show the Conference’s complex settings and the raging
arguments between its participants.

This book displays the complexity, comprehensive, and critical analysis of the Asia
Africa Conference that happened in the midst of the decolonization movement and
the Cold War. The book also focuses on the conference foundational perspective
that can be traced way farther to activities of anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism
movements in Asia and Africa in the early 20th century.

Through 56 essays, Mustofa Bisri invites us to reflect about various topics such as
religious topics, religious institutions, spiritual thoughts, the role of the Kiai, the role
of the ulama, the escalating chaotic perspective of Kiai and ulama, as well as the
often neglected truth that everyone is a Kiai and everyone is an ulama.

Mustofa Bisri discusses these and other subjects from his unique perspective as a
scholar, teacher, and practitioner of Islam.

While Bisri provides a different practical answer for each question posed in this
book, he always returns to the central thesis of this book: Islam is an integral part
of a Muslim’s life. Whether or not a Muslim lives under the Shari’ah Law, Islam must
always be a part of a Muslim’s daily lives. In all aspects of our daily lives, Islam
should still be the foundation that holds everything together.

The Epistemology
of Sufism: An
Introduction

[Epistemologi Tasawuf:
Sebuah Pengantar]

The Epistemology of Sufism: An Introduction is written by one of the 500 Most
Influential Muslims in 2011 by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre. The
author also has written many bestselling titles in philosophy and contemporary
Islamic theology.

This book is a successful endeavor in popularizing the otherwise difficult topic of
sufistic epistemology along a school of thought called Isyraqiyya or Hikmah in
which the experience of Sufism—which is usually considered to be ineffable—is
attempted to be understood within the standard logical-propositional language.
The leading thinker(s) whose thoughts are analyzed in this book are Mulla Shadra
(and Suhrawardi). In their opinions, not only that the sufistic experience is believed
to be communicable, but there is a possibility of further investigation towards an
understanding of this particular experience as a source and method of acquiring
knowledge that fulfills the requirements of the modern philosophy of science.

Haidar Bagir, listed as one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in 2011 by the Royal Islamic Strategic
Studies Centre, has written many bestselling titles in philosophy and contemporary Islamic thought:
The New Era of Ethical Management; Handbook Sufism; Handbook of Islamic Philosophy; What’s the
Use of a Prayer?; Heaven in the World, Heaven in the Hereafter.

We can no longer deny that the word Islam is currently associated with ignorance,
poverty, violence-and even terrorism! This violent picture of Islam is far from the
peaceful image of the Prophet. During the days of Prophet Mohammed and his
friends, Islam was growing all around the world. Islam had such a significant
influence in the world’s civilization and history that we can still witness its impact
today.

So how did this happen? How did we get to this very negative perception of Islam?
Also, more importantly: how can we restore the true peaceful image of Islam as it
was during the days of the Prophet?

This book contains articles and essays that will bring understanding to the state of
Islam and its followers in the world today. It also provides a solution that can restore
the image of Islam as a harbinger of love and peace.

Written in a succinct and contemporary style, Islam Revisionis addresses various
questions modern Muslims ask in their daily lives. The book consists of multiple
topics such as the formation of religion, the daily struggles of living in our current
modern existence, violence, and how to address differences that are inherent in our
world today. This book serves as a historical record and as a response to both our
intellectual musings and daily practical concerns.

Islam Revisionis uses revisionist historical approach that questions the veracity
of the information and presuppositions we inherit from the generations before
us, to establish a more reliable perspective. How sure are we about these ancient
paradigms that have been passed on from one generation to the next? Do we have
reliable shreds of evidence that can support our faith and belief system? Islam
Revisionis is a book for readers who are willing and ready to engage with the truth.

Julia’s Jihad

Reading Julia, you keep on laughing until you suddenly realize that what she is writing about is not funny but
very, very serious. —Frans Magnis Suseno, Professor, Driyarkara School of Philosophy
Julia Suryakusuma is provocative, and she is courageous. She has a sharp eye for stupidity, hypocrisy, and
discrimination, wherever she finds it. And she finds a lot of it.

—David Reeve, Conjoint Associate Professor UNSW, ILTI Academic Coordinator ACICIS.

This book is about life as a female Muslim in the chaos of the world’s largest Muslim democracy.
Was the proliferation of jilbabs (headscarves) in Indonesia since 1998 a sign that the nation
has gone over to the religious extremists? How did a Muslim majority country like Indonesia
embrace liberal democracy? Even more, what do we need to do to make democracy work in
this country? Is the term ‘Muslim feminist’ an oxymoron? By the way, do Muslims even like sex?
Julia’s Jihad tackles these issues and much, much more: how the nation struggles to maintain
the ‘unity in diversity’ of its 300 ethnic groups; how it practices ‘political cannibalism’ to deal
with to its human rights problems; how environmentally we ‘burn our own house down’, and a
whole lot of the other weird and wacky things that make Indonesia the fascinating bundle of
contradictions it is.

Julia Suryakusuma was born in New Delhi India on 19 July 1954. The daughter of a diplomat, she followed her
parents throughout their missions. Julia has been writing since 1971. Her journalistic and academic works have
been published locally and internationally. She is the author of Sex, Power and Nation (Metafor, 2004), Agama,
Seks dan Kekuasaan (Komunitas Bambu, 2011) and State Ibuism/Ibuisme Negara (bilingual, Komunitas Bambu,
2012). Since 2006, Julia has focused on writing in English, although versions of Julia’s Jihad were published in
Korean (April 2009), and in Indonesian (November 2010). A French version also in the works.

Indonesia Dilemma

[Manusia Indonesia
(Sebuah Pertanggung Jawaban)]

Non Ficiton Catalogue

Indonesia Dilemma is Mochtar Lubis’ critical examination of the characters that
define the Indonesian people. Mr. Lubis argues that Indonesians are hypocrites and
irresponsible. They possess feudal tendencies, and they are easily susceptible to
myths. They are artistically gifted and yet morally bankrupt.

While these traits are mere generalizations, Lubis warned that the post-Reformation
educational system and political structure would only exacerbate them to the
detriment of this nation. Mochtar Lubis, the great Indonesian author, outlines his
plan for a better Indonesia through the development of its character in Indonesia
Dilemma.

Mochtar Lubis (1922-2004) is one of Indonesia’s greatest literary figures. His novels have been
translated into many languages. Lubis was also a world-renowned journalist who crusaded for
freedom of the press and was an unwavering believer in universal humanism, truth, and justice. He
was the first Indonesian–and remains one of the only three–to have received the esteemed Philippine
Ramon Magsaysay Award for journalism and literature in 1958. In 1966, Mochtar Lubis founded the
cultural and literary monthly, Horison. In 2000, the International Press Institute honoured him as one
of 50 World Press Freedom Heroes. He is one of the founders of Yayasan Obor Indonesia.

In the early 21st century, non-state actors have assumed a more assertive role.
Civil society’s increased role has contributed significantly to the process of
democratization in third world countries. However, the converse effect is the
emerging radical movements manifested in terrorism. Deradicalization contributes
fresh ideas on responding to radicalism and terrorist movements, specifically in

the brink of death as cancer ravaged her body. Just like Scheherazade, who reads
One Thousand and One Nights tales over as many nights, this traveler recounted his
journey to his ailing mother, who had never left their little village in Java, Indonesia.

He talked about the illusory homeland of China, the holy Tibet, spiritual Nepal,
dramatic India, struggling Pakistan, and the surviving Afghanistan. As she listened to
these stories, his mother finally found a voice to recount her life journey. Fragments
of their lives came together, two distinctive roads spanning time and distance only
to converge, to become a heart-wrenching tale of love and survival.

Agustinus Wibowo is an Indonesian travel writer and travel photographer. Agustinus started a “Grand
Overland Journey” in 2005 from Beijing, where he pursued his bachelor degree in Tsinghua University,
and dreamed of reaching South Africa entirely by land with an optimistic budget of US$2000. His
journey has taken him across Himalaya, South Asia, Afghanistan, Iran, and ex-Soviet Central Asian
republics. He has pioneered a new genre in Indonesian travel literature by allowing readers to
experience the writer’s physical, spiritual and emotional journey as they contemplate their conflicts
and anxieties.

MAGDALENE 77

Being a Woman

[Menjadi Perempuan]

Non Ficiton Catalogue

This book contains 25 essays about being a woman in Indonesia, gender equality,
and certain inalienable rights that are still alien to one half of the nation’s population.
The book is written by both women and men who were voicing their frustration as
a rallying call to those who seek to understand gender issues in Indonesia better.

The opening essay is a discussion about the rape culture as the worst manifestation
of the patriarchy who still seek to put Indonesian women “in their place.” Sadly, rape
culture is very much present here in Indonesia.

These essays are just a small representation of the Indonesian women experience
published in Magdalene.

Magdalene (www.magdalene.co) is an online publication in both English and Indonesian by three
journalists–Devi Asmarani, Hera Diani, and Karina Anjani (no longer active)–in 2013. This publication
highlights women issues as a way to promote the fundamental values of a progressive society such
as equality, diversity, and tolerance. Magdalene is the voice of feminists, pluralists, progressives, and
everyone who dares to be different–regardless of gender, race, or sexual preference.
