UMM AL QUWAIN

At West Yas Academy we are always looking for ways for our students to develop and
learn in ways that they enjoy. This year we had our first residential trip, to Umm Al Quwain.
Twenty nine egger students, from grades 7-10, chose to challenge themselves with three
activity packed days away from home.

Over the course of the three days all the students pushed themselves to try new things,
overcome fears and develop their leadership and team building skills with activities
designed for us especially by our hosts ECOventure.

From the early starts, rock-climbing, leaps of faith, raft building, kayaking to the impromptu
crab catching all our students rose to the challenge, coming out of their shells and really
working together to make this trip enjoyable for all.

SWITZERLAND 280

Over the half term break a group of students took part in West Yas Academy’s inaugural
ski trip. From the moment we left Abu Dhabi airport everyone on the trip represented
themselves and our school as an outstanding member of our community.
Our trip began in Geneva where these bleary-eyed individuals got their first taste of Swiss
life with a delicious breakfast. Along the beautiful shores of Lac Léman we enjoyed fresh
croissants, yoghurt, and fruit. After our meal, we were then taken on factory tours of two
of Switzerland’s largest exports; chocolate and cheese. Once we had consumed copious
amounts of both these delectable treats, we were on our way to our final destination:
Verbier.
Nestled amongst the Swiss Alps, Verbier is a town with breathtakingly gorgeous views no
matter where you look. From snow covered peaks to cozy wooden chalets, it is picture
postcard. And for a week, this was to be our home.
However, what was equally as impressive to the views was how these students carried
themselves. They demonstrated perseverance, collaboration, respect, and a myriad of other
positive qualities in all they did. It was astounding to see how well each of them progressed
so quickly on the slopes; especially for a group of students who had primarily either
never skied before or perhaps only once or twice. Both on and off the slopes this group
consistently impressed all those they came in contact with.
This trip to Switzerland will undoubtedly remain a highlight for all those that attended for
years to come. And for those that were not able to make it this time around, there is always
next year! Thank you again to all those involved and for making this trip a resounding
success.
