How to Use this Manual How to Use this Manual
Preliminary

How to use this Manual

These Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) supplement the Pacific Aerospace Limited FU24-POST 954
Maintenance Manual (AMM).

The C550GT Maintenance Manual Supplement (CMMS) is your first resource for Approved Technical Data
required to maintain this aircraft. This document will direct you to the applicable maintenance information. You
must use the ICA and the CMMS in conjunction with the reference manuals listed in the Preliminary section of
this document.

It is important to note that the ICA are maintenance documents and therefore do not give information about the
process of conversion of a Fletcher FU24-POST 954 aircraft to a Crusader 550GT.

The Crusader Aircraft Company recommends that you view the ICA document’s navigational flowchart. (Link)
This flowchart gives a visual presentation of how this manual should be used. Our aim is to make critical
information easily available to the reader. Once you are familiar with the ICA?? layout, finding the Approved
Technical Data will be quick and easy.

Aircraft Maintenance Records

As a Maintenance Provider that complies with NZCAA rules, the aircraft logbook entries made when you certify
maintenance must refer to approved technical data. It is acceptable to use this ICA as the approved technical
data reference in the Maintenance Record as it specifies and directs you to the data for all C550GT maintenance.

ICA Layout and Navigation

Change Summary

Before doing any maintenance work on the C550GT aircraft, refer to the Change Summary in Chapter 0. This
Summary will show you where implementing this STC has made changes to the aircraft?? structures and
systems.

Master Table of Contents

The C550GT ICA has a Master Table of Contents and uses ATA Chapter numbering like the FU24A-954
Maintenance Manual. As with any large document, this is the start point in finding the information you need. All
items in the Contents lists are ‘click-able links’ and automatically take the reader to the selected topic.

Chapter Contents

Each chapter also has a ‘Mini’ Table of Contents (Mini TOC) for a more detailed view of the topics and subjects
contained in that chapter.

Applicable Section Guide

The Applicable Section Guide will show you the manual to use and directs you to the correct Section or Sub-
Section. If the applicable section is the CMMS, selecting the check-mark  will automatically link to that page.
When the Description or Maintenance Practices are not changed by this STC, an  will direct you to use the
Manufacturers Maintenance Manual for that task.

Components Changed By This STC.

Following the Description and Operation section, each chapter of the ICA has a table that shows Components
Changed by this STC. This table lists all components and significant parts introduced in this STC that will affect
maintenance.

Numbering System.
The C550GT Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) use three-element Chapter / Section / Subject
numbers separated by dashes.

When the Chapter number is followed by zeros in the Section and Subject number (28-00-00), the information
applies to the entire chapter.

When the Section number is followed by zeros in the Subject number (28-20-00), the information applies to
the entire Section within the chapter.

The Subject number shows information applicable to subjects within the sections. The Subject number always
refers to a component part in the system, not a task, test or check. The Subject number progresses sequentially
from -01 depending on the number of components requiring maintenance information.

Like the manufacturers Fletcher FU24-954 Maintenance Manual, this Supplement follows the GAMA 2
Specification.
GAMA Spec. 2 divides all chapter/section/subject maintenance data into three separate Topics: 1) Description
and Operation, 2) Troubleshooting, and 3) Maintenance Practices. Blocks of sequential page numbers identify
these Topics:

a. Page 1 through 99 - Description and Operation
b. Page 101 through 199 - Troubleshooting
c. Page 201 through 299 - Maintenance Practices
Simple Subjects may not require some Topic or Subtopic information. It is important to be aware that in this
situation, these Topics will simply not be in the flow of information.

When Subjects are brief, the CMMS combines information into a single Topic entitled Maintenance Practices.

Maintenance Practices may be a combination of Subtopics, and may include Servicing, Removal/Installation,
Adjustment/Test, Cleaning/Painting or Approved Repairs.

Page numbering for individual Subtopics are:
a. Page 301 through 399 - Servicing
b. Page 401 through 499 - Removal/Installation
c. Page 501 through 599 - Adjustment/Test
d. Page 601 through 699 - Inspection/Check
e. Page 701 through 799 - Cleaning/Painting
f. Page 801 through 899 - Approved Repairs

Figures and Illustrations.
These Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) direct the reader to the C550GT 'Top Level' drawings
through hypertext links. To clarify instructions and tasks, the CMMS also includes simple illustrations in the text
flow.

The number format to identify Figures is the Chapter number, followed by a decimal point, then numbered
consecutively. For example, the first Figure in Chapter 28 is Figure 28.1, the next Figure in this chapter is Figure
28.2, and so on.

The List of Figures, shows the subject and location. This list follows the List of Effective Pages in the
Preliminary. See Chp. 00 List of Figures

Tables
The number format to identify Tables is the Chapter number, followed by a lower-case letter in brackets. For
example, the first Table in Chapter 34 is Table 34(a), the next Table in this chapter is Table 34(b), and so on.

The List of Tables, shows the subject and location. This list follows the List of Figures Pages in the Preliminary.

Change Summary

An E.I. Inc. G-Meter attaches to the firewall on a vertical bracket behind the instrument panel. The sensor
records flight loads and transmits data to the EDC for display on the main screen of the MVP-50T. Use the CMMS
for maintenance.Chapter 32 Landing Gear.
Important changes made to the Landing Gear offset the effect of a higher MTOW, increase resilience and improve
reliability. Components include the use of heavy-duty parts in the MLG and NLG assemblies and the attachment
of the landing gear to the wing structure. The C550GT has 8-ply tyres on larger main and nose wheels
assemblies. The NLG fork has a modified geometry to eliminate nosewheel shimmy. The use of larger brake
calipers and discs increase the braking performance. Brake hydraulic lines routed inside the wing protect them
from damage.
Use the CMMS for guidance to maintenance of the Landing Gear, it details the changes and differences. Use the
Vendor Manuals for wheels and brakes and the FU24-954 MM for all other Landing Gear maintenance.

Chapter 33 Lights.
The C550GT has alternative low voltage LED wing tip lamps. Use the CMMS for maintenance of this item. Use the
FU24-954 MM for all other lighting maintenance.

Chapter 34 Navigation and Pitot Static.
The C550GT uses the optional heated Pitot Head. Use the FU24-954 MM, as there is no significant change.

All installations of Navigational Systems are the subject of modification action to the basic aircraft. Refer to the
NZCAA Form 2129 and related modification documents for information on these components.

Chapter 39 Electrical Panels & Parts.
Where the FU24-950 series had a large centre panel, L & R sub panels, and remote sub-panel the C550GT has
five panels. Two centre panels, with a Circuit Breaker / Switch panel below and L & R sub-panels. These are
isolation mounted on the instrument panel frame. The RH Centre panel has the essential flight instruments, the
LH Centre panel can contain optional flight instruments. Navigation and Communication head units are in the LH
Instrument Panel. The RH Instrument Panel has the MVP-50T Turboprop Engine Monitor and annunciator lights.
Use the CMMS and relevant drawings for maintenance.

Chapter 40 Hopper.
The C550GT has a 1770 litre (62.5 cubic feet) hopper constructed from moulded reinforced fibreglass. This
larger hopper increases the payload volume by 553 litres and is attached to the airframe in the same way. The
bottom section has a 42 in. wide rectangular reinforced outlet to attach the operators chosen outlet valve.
A structural sheetmetal cover fits over the fibreglass hopper and forms part of the fuselage. The cover has a
fibreglass extension and cable operated lid to make loading easier and help prevent spillage. A perspex window
in the front face of the hoppers top section enables the pilot to see the chemical level.

Chapter 52 Doors.
The C550GT has a Cresco canopy assembly and uses the FU24-950 series windscreen. Use the FU24-954 MM, as
there are no significant changes to maintenance.

Chapter 53 Fuselage.
The fuselage extension, 18 inches added forward of STA. 115.34, is a significant design change. Refer to Chapter
53, Description and Operation for a detailed explanation of the differences. CAC considers that this change does
not affect routine maintenance in a significant way. Use the FU24-954 MM for maintenance and inspection.

The C550GT has a contoured and reinforced structural Hopper Cover that fits over the fibreglass hopper. It
attaches to the upper fuselage longerons and is screwed to the fuselage frames. The hopper top fits between
STA. 97.34 and 166.6.

To increase the structural reliability, on the inside of the fuselage the rear bulkhead has reinforcement brackets.
The aluminum CNC milled brackets support the stabilator attachment. Use the CMMS for inspection, removal and
installation of these parts.

The turbine engine frame attaches at the same point as the original FU24-954 engine frame. Additional one-
piece aluminum struts bolted between firewall and fuselage upper-longeron give further reinforcement to the
firewall structure and better load transfer. The engine frames two lower mounts bolt through reinforcement
brackets fastened to the lower longerons inside the fuselage. Use the CMMS for maintenance of the upper struts
and lower brackets and the FU24-954 MM for inspection and maintenance of all other firewall structure.
The fuselage extension changes the position of the wing in relation to the cockpit entry door and does not permit
safe entry to the cockpit.
The modification adds upper and lower cockpit entry steps on each side of the fuselage for crew access to the
cockpit. These steps are different to the FU24-954, use the CMMS for maintenance.

Change Summary

The fuselage modification accommodates a Wide Hopper outlet. In the hopper bay, removable load beams that
pass through integral tubes in the larger fibreglass hopper replace the lower fuselage stringers. This allows for
removal of the hopper. For maintenance of the hopper and supporting fuselage structure, use the CMMS. For all
other maintenance use the FU24-954 MM.Chapter 55 – Stabilisers
There are two vertical stabiliser (Fin) options.

The Superair Ltd alternative Fin has supporting Instructions for Continued Airworthiness. Use the Superair ICA
for maintenance specific to that modification and the FU24-954 MM for all other maintenance.
The Pacific Aerospace Ltd (PAL) alternative Fin has supporting Instructions for Continued Airworthiness. Use the
Pacific Aerospace ICA for maintenance specific to that modification and the FU24-954 MM for all other
maintenance.
The C550GT has a dorsal fin added to increase directional stability and strengthen the forward Fin attachment. It
attaches to the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer and the top of the fuselage. There is a panel to access the
Fin attachment. Use the CMMS for maintenance.
The C550GT has a redesigned Stabilator Hinge fitting. Fabricated in 4130 steel and CNC milled in one piece, it
has a larger bearing area and provides greater wear resistance. Dimensionally, the hinge fitting is the same as
the FU24 part, use the FU24-954 MM for maintenance and inspection.

Chapter 56 Windows.
Use the FU24-954 MM, as there is no significant change.

Chapter 57 Wings.
To increase the fatigue resistance of the wing centre section, CAC have increased the thickness and number of
main spar lower cap doublers. A flat main spar outer web and shear strips help to prevent the historical problems
of cracks in the spar web. Carry Through Angles reinforce the spar web joint. Selected parts of the PAC Former
Spreader modification are implemented and cracking in the leading-edge formers are eliminated through the
redesign of the leading-edge fuel tanks. Wing leading edge Inserts, installed outboard of the Fuel Tanks,
complete the leading-edge profile.
On the lower wing skins, four removable panels give access to the aileron control cables.
The replacement top and bottom Outer Wing Panel fittings are 4130 steel and reinforce the main spar
attachment points. Large diameter bolts increase the wear resistance of the bearing area. The rear spar fitting is
standard FU24 and uses a larger attach bolt.
Although these changes improve the wing reliability and performance, maintenance tasks stay the same. Use the
FU24-954 MM for maintenance. Use the CMMS and drawings for the larger attachment bolt details.

Chapter 61 Propeller.
The C550GT uses a HC-B3TN-3D Hartzell steel hub propeller with 3 aluminum blades.

The aircraft’s unique system of engine and propeller control is critical to the gains in operational performance
made by this STC.
Therefore, to clarify this specific maintenance information the Crusader Aircraft Company selects the applicable
sections from the Hartzell Manual 139 and supplements that information with 61-20-00 Propeller Control. The
controls section of the CMMS shows the maintenance, adjustment and rigging of the propeller governor controls.
Use the CMMS for all maintenance information.

Chapter 71 Power Plant.
The significant change in the aircraft is the replacement powerplant. The C550GT has a PT6A-15AG Turboprop
engine isolation mounted to a tubular steel frame. The powerplant is enclosed by a top and bottom carbon fibre
cowling that also houses the barrier air filter. Attached to the engine and sealing in slots in the cowls are fireseals
forward and aft of the air intake. The bottom cowl has a NACA inlet ahead of the exhaust to duct fresh air to the
cockpit. Fitted with the Hartzell HC-B3TN-3D Hartzell 3-blade propeller, in addition to providing thrust the engine
supplies electrical system power and bleed air to augment the oil cooler. On the firewall are E.I. Inc. sensors for
fuel and oil pressure and temperature. The sensor for engine torque indication also mounts on the firewall and
connects to flexible hoses.

Chapter 73 Engine Fuel and Controls.
The airframe components that control fuel to the engine are the cockpit control quadrant and the connecting
cables. A three-lever quadrant, centred on the instrument panel bulkhead, transmits engine and propeller control
settings through Cablecraft push-pull cables to the FCU, Starting Control and Propeller Governor. Sensors supply
fuel pressure and flow rate data that displays on the MVP-50T Engine Monitor Panel on the LH Instrument Sub-
Panel.
