Weight & Balance Description and Operation / Levelling & Weighing
Levelling & Weighing
08-10-00 Levelling & Weighing
Weight and Balance.
Description and Operation
1. Definitions
Empty Weight.
Includes:
• Fixed equipment on the aircraft.
• Unusable fuel on the aircraft
• Full operating fluids required for the normal operation of the aircraft’s systems.
• Items specified in the Form 2173 Equipment List.
Empty Weight Centre of Gravity (EWCG).
The EWCG is the centre of gravity of an aircraft in its empty weight condition.
Tare Weight.
Tare is the weight of chocks, blocks, stands, etc. used when weighing.
Unusable Fuel.
Unusable fuel is the quantity of fuel that cannot be safely used in level flight. This is the quantity of
fuel remaining in each tank after the fuel inlet port becomes uncovered in level and balanced flight.
Undrainable Fuel.
Undrainable fuel is the quantity of fuel that remains in the aircraft fuel tanks and fuel lines after
they have been drained. (The undrainable fuel normally only amounts to a small quantity).
2. Datum.
The datum is defined as fuselage STA 100.21 (wing leading edge).
Centre of Gravity Limits.
The maximum C of G range is from 7.80 in. to 25.40 in. aft of the datum.
The forward limits are:
• 7.8 aft of datum at 1406.14 kg. (3100 lb.) or less.
• 16.8 aft of datum at 2925.67 kg. (6450 lb.)
• 20.2 aft of datum at 3175.14 kg. (7000 lb.)
With linear variation between these points.
The aft limit is: 25.4 in. aft of the datum at all weights.
3. Weighing Condition.
Weigh the aircraft on level ground in a hangar to eliminate wind disturbance.
Weigh scales must be calibrated and a sufficient capacity to support the aircraft.
(1) Hopper empty.
(2) Aircraft clean internally and externally.
(3) All fixed equipment listed in the aircraft’s Weight and Balance Report.
(4) All other equipment and loose articles removed.
(5) Fuel drained down to unusable or the fuel quantity and weight must be known.
(6) Engine oil level to full mark.
(7) Tyres correctly inflated.
(8) Shock struts correctly charged.
(9) Control column lock fitted.
(10) Flaps Up.
(11) Cargo door closed. Canopy closed.

Figure 8.1 Weight & Balance Measurements.
4. Measurements.
L = distance between the points of reaction, with the aircraft in the weighing position.
M = distance of datum from the centre line of the main wheels.
X = distance from mainwheels to C of G point, as calculated.
5. Weighing Procedure.
(1) Place the scales under each wheel and chock the main wheels. Make sure the brakes are OFF.
(2) Allow the aircraft weight to settle evenly on the scales.
(3) Place spirit levels at the lateral and longitudinal levelling points.
(4) Level the aircraft laterally by deflating the mainwheel tyres as required.
NOTE: Make sure you close the canopy.
(5) Level the aircraft longitudinally. Deflate nose wheel tyre and/or shock strut as needed.
(6) Recheck lateral and longitudinal level.
(7) Record the weight shown on each scale in the appropriate column of the Weight Balance Report.
See Chp. 8 C550GT Weight and Balance Worksheet.
(8) Record the weight of the chocks in the appropriate column of the Weight and Balance Report.
CAUTION: WHEN YOU COMPLETE THE WEIGHING PROCEDURE, MAKE SURE THAT THE TYRES ARE INFLATED
TO THE CORRECT PRESSURES AND THAT THE LANDING GEAR SHOCK STRUTS ARE CORRECTLY
CHARGED BEFORE MOVING THE AIRCRAFT.
See Chp. 12 MLG Strut Servicing.

Levelling Procedures Description and Operation / Levelling
Levelling
08-20-00 Levelling
Description and Operation
Levelling.
This procedure is used for levelling the aircraft for maintenance operations. For example, Flight Control rigging or
Fuel System calibration. Levelling procedures for weighing the C550GT aircraft are fully described in Chapter 08-
10-00 Weight and Balance. See Chp. 08 Weight and Balance.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU LIFT AND TRESTLE THE AIRCRAFT ON LEVEL GROUND AND AWAY FROM
WIND GUSTS AND JET OR PROP WASH. THE AIRCRAFT CAN FALL OFF THE JACKS AND CAUSE
INJURY OR DEATH.
Levelling Points.
Lateral Level.
In the cockpit across the top longerons, aft of the windscreen arch. (STA 76 approx.)
Longitudinal Level.
On the RH side of the fuselage, locate the two rivnuts at STA 147 and STA 162. Remove the two 10-32 UNF
screws and put in bolts of a suitable length to support the spirit level.
Figure 8.2 Leveling Points.
Maintenance Practices
Levelling Procedure.
(1) Put spirit levels at the lateral and longitudinal Levelling Points.
(2) Level the aircraft laterally by jacking, longitudinally by adjusting at the nose trestle or tail support.
See Chp. 07 Lifting and Shoring.
WARNING: THE AIRCRAFT WILL HAVE A HEAVY NOSE DOWN ATTITUDE DURING A DOUBLE LIFT. MAKE
SURE THE TAIL SUPPORT IS IN POSITION TO KEEP THE AIRCRAFT STABLE.
(3) The aircraft is level when the bubbles are centred in both spirit levels.

Aircraft Refuelling and Defueling. Fire Prevention and Safety Guidance (latest revision) for fuel sampling,
draining, refuelling and defuelling procedures applicable to this aircraft.
1. Defuelling.
WARNING: MAINTENANCE ON THE AIRCRAFT IS NOT PERMITTED DURING DEFUELING.
(1) Use applicable fuel pumping equipment to defuel the aircraft.
(2) Use the LE Tank drain valves only to drain residual fuel.
2. Refuelling.
Refuel either by pouring or pumping. When pouring fuel from cans, make sure to sufficiently filter the fuel. Use a
chamois leather and funnel.
WARNING: ALL PERSONNEL MUST OBEY THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DURING REFUELLING AND
DEFUELLING.
• Fuel the aircraft out in the open, not in a hangar.
• Do not defuel or refuel the aircraft near an electrical storm.
• Make sure the refuel hose and pumping equipment are bonded.
• Make sure you electrically ground the aircraft.
• Have adequate fire appliances available for use.
• NO SMOKING less than 30 metres from the aircraft.
• Make sure all the aircraft electrical systems are OFF.
• Use an approved detector kit to check the fuel for water in suspension.
• If you spill fuel, flush the contaminated area with water. Do not attempt to start the engine until you remove
all residual fuel and vapour.
• When refuelling is complete, make sure the fuel tank caps are secure.
WARNING: THE CRUSADER AIRCRAFT COMPANY DOES NOT RECOMMEND OR ENDORSE REFUELLING WITH
THE ENGINE OPERATING.
NOTE: Aircraft operators, that require refuelling with the engine running, must have this SOP approved by
the applicable Regulatory Authority.
