The Visit Malaysia year was first launched in 1990 with the theme "Amazing Malaysia
of the Year of Celebration". This campaign was a huge success with Malaysia devising
7.4 million tourist arrivals compared to 4.8 million in 1989. To facilitate tourists to easily
recognize Malaysia, “Orang Utan”, endangered species found in East Malaysia were
used as mascots and they were named "Heroes". In addition, the famous landmark in
Kuala Lumpur, Sultan Abdul Samad Building was featured as the official Visit Malaysia
Year 1990. The Malaysian Independence Day on August 31 was the lead for 84 major
events, 14 festivals and nine exhibitions during the 1990s. The song "to know Malaysia
is to love Malaysia "has had an impact during the 1990s.
The success of the 1990 The Visit Malaysia has led to another in 1994. This time, the
theme was "Amazing Malaysia. Naturally Much". The Visit Malaysia 1994 maintained
the "Awesome Malaysia" slogan for the theme but added a "Naturally Much" slogan to
reflect the more interesting and organized events for the year. "Orang Utan" once
again used as mascot.
The third The Visit Malaysia was launched in 2007 in conjunction with Malaysia's 50th
Anniversary of Independence. Therefore, the theme of "Celebrating 50 Years of State
Independence" is very appropriate to illustrate this important anniversary celebration.
Efforts are also being intensified in all advertising and promotional activities, including
calls for action "the time is now. The place is Malaysia" along with the successful and
effective slogan "Malaysia Truly Asia". In line with the 50th Anniversary of
Independence, over 200 events across the country with 50 major events were held to
showcase Malaysia's wealth of tourist attractions. All in all, The Visit Malaysia 2007
recorded a huge unexpected success with 20.97 million tourist arrivals and RM46.1
billion in tourism revenues. This means an increase of 3.
In 2014, Malaysia will welcome the Fourth Year Visit Malaysia with the theme
"Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia" to illustrate diversity in the unity of Malaysians.
Bekantan monkeys were chosen as mascot while promotion campaign started in 2013
with a series of special year-long events and activities that led to TMM 2014. This time,
The Visit Malaysia 2014 will be the largest and most celebrated tourism festival with
hundreds of events and the festival all lined up to celebrate the world. Overall, The
Visit Malaysia 2014 is expected to contribute to the Government's target of receiving
36 million tourist arrivals and RM168 billion in revenue in 2020, as outlined in the
Malaysia Tourism Transformation Plan (MTTP) 2020.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has set a target of 30 million international
and domestic tourists visiting the country in the Visit Malaysia Year (TMM) 2020.

GAYA ISLAND
History
Before the Ice Age, it formed part of the Crocker Range mass of sandstone and
sedimentary rock on the mainland. However, about one million years ago, the melting
ice brought about changes in the sea level and parts of the mainland were cut off by
the sea to form the islands of Gaya Island, Sapi Island, Manukan Island, Mamutik
Island and Sulug Island. Evidence of this can be seen from the exposed sandstone of
the coastline forming the cliffs, caves, honeycombs and deep crevices.
In 1882, the North Borneo Chartered Company set up a trading settlement on Gaya
Island. After destruction in 1898 the settlement was moved to the mainland in 1899
and named as Jesselton in honour of Charles Jessel, a manager of the Chartered
Company. Later it was renamed to its current name, Kota Kinabalu.
In 1974, the major part of Gaya and Sapi islands was gazetted as Tunku Abdul
Rahman National Park, covering an area of 8,990 acres (36.4 km2). In 1979, the park
was increased to 12,185 acres (49.31 km2) with the inclusion of the three nearby
islands of Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug. The park is spread over 4,929 hectares, two
thirds of which cover the sea.

In Gaya island, there have a resort for travellers to stay for the night. Each of their
resort has its own charm. The island triumph card is its surrounding beaches where
unlike Tanjong Jara and Pangkor Laut Resort, Gaya Island is surrounded by the
most alluring clean and clear waters right at its waterfront, without having to take the
boat out. It is secluded and safe, plus the sand is like a soft bed just made for
tanning or lazing. The water is pristine, magically green and blue.

How to go there?
Most travellers begin their journey from Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu, which has
flights (AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines) to Tawau, the third-largest town in Sabah. From
the Tawau Airport, hop on an hour-long bus ride to Semporna Jetty, located on the
east coast. It is a scenic 40 minute boat ride to Gaya Island, passing by numerous little
islands that dot the surface of the calm sea.
