MATAKING ISLAND
History
Mataking Island consists of two islands, the bigger Mataking Besar and the smaller
Mataking Kecil. Mataking is located to the southeast of Sabah, close to the Philippine
border. It is the ultimate destination for honeymooners (you can even have your
wedding at the island).
The only resort on the island is located at Mataking Besar. You can walk around the
whole island in about an hour; it is only 3km by 1,5km. During low tide you can even
walk from the big island to the small island.
The whole island is surrounded by house reefs, where you can easily do some fun
snorkeling. From May to August, you may be lucky enough to spot Green turtles and
Hawksbill turtles laying their eggs on the beaches.
There’s a dive school that offers great dives at numerous nice sites in the area, mainly
around Mataking itself and around neighboring islands like Pandanan, Bohayan, Buhai
Dulang, Kelapuan, Timba-Timba and Pom Pom.

SARAWAK
TALANG TALANG BESAR ISLAND
History
Pulau Talang Besar and Pulau Talang Kecil are located 30 minutes offshore from
Sematan in Southwest Sarawak. These tiny islands serve as sanctuaries for Green
and Hawksbill Turtles. Over 90% of turtle landings are from Green Turtles. The
islands are Sarawak’s most important turtle conservation site and are part of the
Talang Satang National Park.
Owing to their small size and fragile environment, the Talang Talang Islands have
not been developed for tourism. Instead the government’s emphasis has been on
turtle conservation.
Sarawak is a pioneer of turtle conservation with Talang Talang being the first site in
the world to be the focus of turtle research and management activities. The now
common turtle conservation strategies of tagging adult turtles and relocating eggs to
hatcheries were first tried out on the tiny islands of Talang Talang.

KETAM ISLAND
History
The island is home to two predominantly Chinese fishing villages founded circa 1880.
The main village on the southern side of the island is also known as Pulau Ketam.
As the island is submerged during high tide, housing on the island consists of "floating
houses" perched on wooden stilts 1 to 10 metres (3 to 33 ft) above sea level. The main
thoroughfares are narrow concreted pavements, whilst in the residential areas, the
older rickety wooden plank bridges can still be seen. There are no cars on the island;
bicycles, some of which are motorised, are the main means of transportation within
the villages.

REDANG ISLAND
History
The first settlers of Redang Island were believed to be the Bugis from Celebes,
Indonesia. They established their first village at Teluk Kalong and later moved south
to Pulau Pinang ("betel nut palm island") where the present Marine Park Centre is
located.
The villagers on Redang are believed to be descendents of these original Bugis
settlers. Redang Island is famous for its crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches,
and the tropical fish that inhabit the numerous reefs,
The first resorts on Redang appeared around the late 80s. With the declaration of
Redang as a marine park in 1991 came gradual development of more resorts to
cater to local marine enthusiasts who flocked to the relatively unspoilt island to
snorkel and dive.
