MESSAGE FROM
ARCHBISHOP OF
KUALA LUMPUR,
MOST REVEREND
JULIAN LEOW BENG KIM

Greetings of peace, love and joy!

Celebrating the anniversaries of a parish dedicated to Our Lady and to martyrs is certainly a
great reminder that we are all called to be missionaries and evangelisers during our stay here on
earth. There is much that we can learn from these holy and inspirational figures whom the
churches are named after. More so, with Saints Chastan and Imbert being so close in Penang,
both teaching in College General Seminary in the 1820s.

Our Blessed Mary followed the footsteps of her Son in giving her life in service of others. She did
not stay in her comfortable environment. Rather, her life was lived as an act of faith, of trust and
of generous abandon to the dictates of the Holy Spirit. It was a constant journey into the
unknown, but always in obedience to the will of God. And in Mary, we see a living and vibrant
faith, based on total surrender and commitment to the will of God.

Saints Chastan and Imbert shone God’s light by touching the hearts of the people through their
missionary work and upholding their conviction in their faith. The martyrs were open to God’s
call to allow the seed of vocation to grow in them. Faith in God is the seed that bears meaning in
our lives because faith touches our deepest desire of wanting to belong and be loved. The
martyrs endured persecution because of their faith.

It is my most fervent hope that all of you will continue to grow both in terms of your spiritual
lives and evangelisation and may you always be rooted in Mary’s humility and the perseverance
of Saints Chastan and Imbert.

May this celebration be a time of grateful thanks to God for all the graces bestowed and may
this community continue to be a beacon of hope and love to all.

God bless.

Yours Affectionately,
+ Most Rev Julian Leow Beng Kim, D.D.

MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT
PARISH PRIEST
REVEREND FATHER KONSTEND
GNANAPRAGASAM

Happy 86/26 Anniversary, dear NBVM and SCIC
family!

It is indeed such a joy for me to be a part of the
community during this time of great celebrations to
mark 86 years of the Catholic Church’s presence in
Butterworth, Perai and the surrounding areas.

I was posted to the parish in December 2020 as a
deacon and then following my ordination in May
2021, as the assistant parish priest. Although it has
only been a short time that I have been here, and
half of that time with us being in lockdown, I have
had the opportunity to work with and get to know
many of the parishioners and have seen the spirit of
love for Christ and his Church flourishing here. I
believe that it must be this spirit handed down by
the forefathers of this parish that has sustained the
parish in witnessing to Christ and doing good works
through all these years.

On this joyful occasion, it is my prayer that the
Blessed Mother will continue to protect, guide and
inspire all her children of this parish to always live a
life that points to Jesus, that is obedient to His will
and that always seeks the good for others. May the
virtuous lives of our patrons, Saints Chastan and
Imbert, always remind us of the call each one of us
has received to become a saint.

God bless!
Fr Konstend

Dear Rev Fr Dominic Santhiyagu and
wonderful parishioners,
Congratulations on celebrating your parish
anniversaries. I am pleased to extend my
warmest wishes to all of you. Your parish has
always been close to my heart, as it was the
first parish that I had the honour to serve
after my ordination to the priesthood.
Your unique blend of hospitable and
charitable parishioners has always helped
me in remembering your parish. I still recall
how you all reached out to welcome our
brethren, especially from Indonesia. The
many celebrations that were organised by
the parish to bring life to the parishioners.
This among many others has surely made
you a beacon of light for Christ and brought
much happiness to our Mother Mary and the
Saints.

As you move forward to celebrate the growth
and faithful achievements of your parish, I
take this opportunity to wish you much
happiness, joy and peace. May God bless you
all.

ASSISTANT PARISH PRIEST:

PARISH PRIEST: 2005–2006

Greetings of peace and love!

I wish to thank Frs Dominic Santiago and Konstend and the editorial team for
inviting me to pen a message for this magazine in conjunction with the opening of
The Nativity Centre.

When I was the parish priest from 2004–2007, the students attending Sunday School
were using the church, old church, cabins and the meeting room next to the parish
house. The cabins were hot, especially in the afternoon for the Chinese-speaking
students and teachers. The teachers in the church or old church had difficulty
teaching as there were no proper classrooms and furniture. A committee was set up
to build a pastoral centre. Unfortunately, I then had to leave for further studies in
early 2007.

I am sure all the parishioners are very happy that after 16 years the new pastoral
centre with well-equipped classrooms and state-of-the-art meeting rooms is ready. I
wish to congratulate and thank Fr Dominic and the dedicated building and fund-
raising committee members for making the dream come true. And of course, special
thanks to the donors for their generosity and love for the parish.

With the new classrooms and meeting rooms, my sincere hope is that the Catholic
faith will be passed on to the younger generations more effectively and community
building be enhanced.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph continue to accompany us in our faith
journey as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Yours Sincerely,
Edmund Woon

PARISH PRIEST:
2009–2017

Happy anniversary and congratulations
to the parishioners of the Church of
NBVM on the occasion of the 86th
anniversary and the 26th anniversary of
SCIC. It is a truly joyous occasion as you
also celebrate the realisation of your
vision of having a pastoral centre.

Just like the Israelites waiting to enter
the Promised Land, the parishioners have
been patiently praying and trusting the
Lord to make this dream of having a
more conducive centre for holding
catechism classes and meetings for the
growing congregation a reality. It is
definitely a testimony of the work of God
and His providence, in His time. The
planning started some years ago and
credit should be given to all the
parishioners, some who are no longer
around for their generosity and support.

It was a privilege for me and fellow
priests before me to be involved in such
a challenging project. Nevertheless, God
has chosen Rev Fr Dominic to bring it to
completion. My sincere appreciation to
Rev Fr Dominic and all who have
supported financially and contributed
their time and talent. May you be
blessed abundantly and may the
Nativity Centre be filled with God’s love,
kindness, charity and hospitality.

We ask Mary our mother, Saints Chastan
and Imbert, the patron saints to pray
with us and for us that the parishioners
of NBVM/SCIC will continue to grow in
faith and love and be true witnesses of
Christ in the community.

Dear Fr Dominic, brothers and sisters in Christ,
One of the fondest memories I have of serving at
both NBVM and SCIC was the love and care of the
community. As you celebrate your respective
anniversaries, I urge the church members to
continue to spread and encourage this value not
only among your communities but go beyond and
expand it further especially to the peripherals.
We must endeavour to bring God’s love to all and
this can only be done through us; God’s
instruments of love; “My command is this: Love
each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).
And as I congratulate you in your celebration, be
assured of my continuous prayer for you all and I
sincerely hope all of you will continue to spread
God’s message of love and care!
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

since 1786, just a few months after the
foundation of George Town by Captain
Francis Light.

More than a century later, seeing a need for
spiritual and educational facilities for the
people on the mainland of Penang, Rev Fr
Adrien Devals MEP bought a piece of land
for the first Assumption School in 1930. The
premises were used by Rev Fr Jean-
Baptiste Souhait MEP, parish priest of the
then Cathedral of the Assumption for regular
Masses, with him crossing over by boat to
serve the community here.

During the pre-war years, local children
would occupy the few classrooms during the
week while every third Sunday of the month,
priests from College General would
celebrate Mass here.

"The MEP Fathers brought the faith to our country and they planted the local Church on
firm ground by spreading the faith among locals, forming local priests and leaving their
properties and lands for the local Church to become self-reliant." Rev Fr Murphy Pakiam

THE EARLY DAYS

Later, towards the end of the war, a priest would cycle from Bukit Mertajam to celebrate Mass.
Some parishioners even had to use sampan to cross the Perai River to reach Ujung Batu and
then walk up to church. All in their Sunday best!
Several priests, including Rev Fr Arokianathan, Rev Fr Joachim Teng and Rev Fr Paul Wong
took care of the needs of the different language communities.
In 1945, the parish received its first resident priest, Rev Fr Louis Ashness. He implemented
some renovations to the church building and also built a shrine to Our Lady near the entrance
of the church.
Later in 1947, assistant parish priest Rev Fr LS Norris
together with the determined people of Perai began
collecting funds for a boys’ school.
Joined by Fr Ashness, the building of the Assumption
School on Jalan Assumption was completed and
officially blessed in 1949.
A loft was built in the church for the choir by Fr Norris.

"The choir was made up of powerful male voices,
well-trained to chant Latin hymns and Masses.
The organist on Sunday was regular in
attendance and though blind, he skillfully played
the old-fashioned harmonium. The choir was
positioned on the ground floor of the church but
they preferred to sing from the balcony, so they
coaxed me to build them a choir loft. This was
done in quick time with the choir members
collecting the funds and supervising the erection
of the balcony.” Rev Fr LS Norris

MORE GROWTH & CHANGES

Over the past 86 years, the church has taken on numerous looks as our parish priests initiated
various upgrades, restorations and refurbishments, both major and minor to the church building
and its surroundings.
When Rev Fr Charles Chin served as parish
priest in the mid ‘70s, the Annunciation Room
was built. This room went on to serve as a
much needed venue for countless meetings,
formation sessions, catechism classes and
various activities in the many years ahead.
In 1979, Rev Fr Alexander Edwin initiated
works to change the flooring of the altar to the

Message from Parish Pastoral
Council Chairman,
Mr Stephen Chin

Greetings of peace and joy!

I am very honoured to be invited to pen a few words for this
publication which was initially meant for the grand 85/25 twin
celebration of NBVM and SCIC anniversaries in 2020.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the organising
committee to postpone the celebrations, it has not dampened
the spirit of resilience of our parishioners who have come
together in many ways to keep the parish alive and safe
during this challenging period.

Despite being a third generation NBVM/SCIC parishioner, I
have limited knowledge of the origins and history of our
church as well as the people who have contributed
tremendously to the growth of our beloved parish over the
past 86 years.

Therefore, when the idea for this commemorative magazine
was mooted, I was very excited to be invited to be part of the
editorial team as we embarked on a journey to capture the life
and essence of our community.

It is indeed very inspiring to revisit the stories and thoughts
behind our past parish priests, lay leaders and also ordinary
parishioners in their journey to build the community here in
Butterworth. Some of these stories will be shared in this book.

I truly hope that these stories will help us grow in faith and
unity, to embrace the vibrancy and enthusiasm of our
forefathers and to encourage young leaders to come forward
to serve.

Lastly, I would also like to take the opportunity to
congratulate and thank all present and past parish priests,
various ministries, organisations, BECs and committees who
have made it possible to get to where we are now and make
this publication a reality.

God bless!

Stephen Chin

Message from 86/26
Anniversary Celebration
Organising Committee
Chairperson,
Madam Mavis Catherine Baptist

On behalf of the 86/26 anniversary celebration organising
committee, I praise and thank God for the success of this
double celebration despite the unexpected postponement
and restrictions imposed by the movement control order.

As we celebrate our faith journey here in the parish of
NBVM/SCIC for the past 86/26 years, we remember our
forefathers, parish leaders and former priests and religious
who had sown the seeds of our faith in Butterworth. We give
thanks to our Blessed Virgin Mary, patron of our parish
together with Saints Chastan and Imbert who have been our
constant guide and source of inspiration for our congregation.

The renovations of the NBVM Church would not have been
possible without the encouragement, confidence and efforts
of Rev Fr Dominic, Rev Fr Louis Loi and Rev Fr Konstend. I
would like to thank them and the whole community for the
moral support and financial contribution, and most of all
those who have prayed so fervently for the success of our
projects. We are truly proud of our past achievements and
excited to continue the vision of our founding fathers in our
new Nativity Centre and refurbished church. Together let us
invoke our patron saints and the Holy Spirit to continue to
guide and inspire us, especially our younger generation, to
fully utilise the facilities provided for their spiritual growth.

Finally, to the organising committee members and all our
parishioners who have had to face numerous challenges and
inconvenience, I wish to convey my sincere appreciation for
your patience and support and pray that all of you be blessed
continually.

REVEREND FATHER
JOACHIM ROBERT

Ordained a Priest: 19 March 2015

It is my privilege to extend my heartiest congratulations to the parishioners of NBVM and SCIC on
this momentous occasion, in celebration of the 86th anniversary for the Church of the Nativity of the
Blessed Virgin Mary and the 26th anniversary for the Church of Saints Chastan and Imbert.
It is indeed a blessed moment of joy and pride for the parishioners, for the community we have built
by the grace of God and the great milestones achieved over these many years. Indeed, God has been
bounteously gracious to us. To God, be all glory, honour, praise and thanksgiving.
On a personal level, I am indebted to NBVM/SCIC as my home parish during my formative years for
helping me grow in my faith and nurturing me with the love of serving the Lord. I hold many fond
memories of my growing years that have shaped me into who I am today. The parish priests who have
served through all these years play an integral part of my journey. The invaluable memories as a
server, youth, parishioner, partaking in the BEC and parish community building, growing as a big
family are all the seeds that God planted for me here at NBVM/SCIC, God’s blessed and rich soil.
May the parishioners continue to serve God with love, joy and gladness, being assured that God’s
companionship is always with us all. May God’s bountiful blessings be upon you and your families and
the whole parish community always.
