8626 Magazine

Final 8626 magazine

In February 1982, Rev Fr Alexander TTahkeeNseSwhaCpheurch
Edwin took the initial step of
discussing the building of a chapel
cum multipurpose hall with the
Diocesan Financial Commission. He
submitted an initial sketch to the
Commission for consideration and
sought an architect to draw up the
necessary plans.

In September 1983, the inaugural
meeting of the Chai Leng Park
Chapel Planning Committee was
held under the chairmanship of Mr
Henry Too and Major H Carlos as
secretary. The committee decided
to start a building fund.

Following several years of
meetings, deliberations and
planning, fund raising was initiated
in October 1988 and plans for the
project were submitted to the
Municipal Council in January 1989.
Approval was received in July 1990.

The complex was to have a church with a 600 seating capacity, parish house, caretaker’s quarters, a hall
accommodating three badminton courts and a three-storey hostel.

In 1990, Rev Fr Murphy Pakiam was made parish priest of Butterworth. He was instrumental in seeing to the
completion of the building project.

Each family in the parish contributed one month’s wages for the
building of SCIC. The MEP Society contributed to almost the whole
cost of the hostel block. Food and fun fairs, concerts and dinners
were organised to raise funds.

On November 8, 1992, Bishop of Penang, Rt Rev Antony Selvanayagam officiated at a ceremony to lay the
foundation stone. The earthworks and piling started in early 1993 and the building was completed in June 1994.
SCIC was officially declared open and blessed by Bishop Antony on October 7, 1995.

“I remember a young man who took up a third job to make ends meet for his family so that he could keep
up his commitment of one month’s wage for the church building fund. Another family, where both
husband and wife each gave one month’s salary for this project, although they were undergoing a trying
spell in their lives.” Rev Fr Murphy Pakiam

Martyrdom in Korea

Travelling across the whole of China, Fr Chastan and
Bishop Imbert tried to enter Korea from Manchuria.
Christians in Korea were being persecuted and it was
forbidden under the death penalty to bring in a priest.
Finally in December 1836, Fr Chastan managed to enter
Korea and soon was in Seoul learning the Korean
language. A year later, Bishop Imbert joined him. With
great difficulties they carried on their pastoral work and
prepared young men for priesthood.

During the fierce persecution of 1839, in order to spare
his flock from further torment, Bishop Imbert
surrendered himself to the authorities. Refusing to
renounce God and His teachings, he was tortured and
put in jail. Hoping to bring an end to the persecution, Fr
Chastan followed the advice of Bishop Imbert and
surrendered to the police.

“The Good Shepherd is the one who lays down
his life for his sheep.”

Fr Jacques Chastan and Rev Fr Pierre-Philibert

On September 21, 1839, Bishop Laurent Imbert and Fr
Jacques Chastan were beheaded near Seoul together
with other Korean martyrs. They were all beatified in July
1925 and canonised by Pope John Paul II in May 1984.

One of the first major events at SCIC, Chrism Mass in 1996.

A Church Alive

Painting and upgrading works done in recent years.

Throughout its 26 years of existence, SCIC has hosted numerous Masses, formations, camps, receptions and
countless other events. Between 2019 and 2021, with major construction works for NBVM Church and the
Nativity Pastoral Centre going on, SCIC became the main venue for all Masses and parish events.

Parish priest Rev Fr Dominic
Santhiyagu and his assistants also had
to move to the parish house in SCIC
during the construction period. What
started as a hobby during the first MCO
is now a thriving garden. Every once in
a while, parishioners are surprised with
gifts of lady’s fingers, cucumbers and
other vegetables fresh from Fr Dom’s
garden.

A CHURCH FIT
FOR THE QUEEN

OF HEAVEN

8th September 2021, Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary – We witnessed a historic event
for our parish in the celebration of its 86th anniversary and the rededication of the newly renovated
Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Mass was presided over by Rt Rev Datuk Seri Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang accompanied by
Rev Fr Dominic Santhiyagu and Rev Fr Konstend Gnanapragasam. Only 50 people were allowed to
be present in the church, yet thousands more shared in our joy via livestreaming on YouTube.
The rededication liturgy included the sprinkling of blessed water, a symbol of the cleansing of the
people and the building; the Litany of Saints, invoking the Church Triumphant in our supplications;
the prayer of dedication; and anointing of the Altar and the Tabernacle, making them symbols of
Christ who before all others is the Anointed One.
The church’s walls were also anointed, with 12 anointings representing the 12 Apostles of the New
Jerusalem. This was followed by the dressing of the Altar, signifying that it is the Lord’s table where
all God’s people are refreshed in His sacrificial banquet. The white cloth used represents Christ’s
spotless robe and the purity of our relationship with Him. Seven altar candles were lit, symbolising
the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The image of the Divine Mercy and the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help were also consecrated.
After Mass, Bishop Sebastian officially reopened the church with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

HONOURS FROM

THE POPE

Over the years, our parish has been blessed
with five recipients of the Benemerenti
Medal. While they are no longer with us, we
would still like to honour them and their
contributions to our parish in this magazine.
Stephen Chin draws on some of his own
childhood memories of these selfless
individuals and speaks with their family
members to gain insights into their personal
lives and to share their stories for all to know.

The family stayed in the government quarters near St
Mark’s School and would all attend daily Mass. All his
seven sons who are named after the apostles were altar
servers, while one of his two daughters was a founding
member of the NBVM kindergarten. He had a
reputation for being a disciplinarian. He also loved to
cook for his family every Friday and his specialty was
fish porridge.
Uncle Ean Theng was active in the Parish Council
besides establishing the Legion of Mary and the St
Joseph Dying Aid. His greatest passion was in
organising the annual nativity plays on Christmas eve, a
legacy left by Rev Fr Louis Ashness.
Mother Mary was very close to Uncle Ean Theng's
heart. He wrote papers in efforts to revive interest in
the Legion of Mary that were presented to clergy and
lay leaders at the national level.

Many of us remember Uncle Anthony as the booming voice
from the choir area, which was then at the side altar of
NBVM Church. To him praising the Lord in songs is to pray
twice over. He was often seen with his pipe and we all called
him “Old Man Anthony”.

According to his daughter Mary Anne, Uncle Anthony hailed
from India and came to Penang as a young boy with his
parents. He attended St Xavier’s Institution and upon
completing his studies, worked for a short time in the
Singapore Police Force before returning to Penang and
joining the Royal Australian Air Force in Butterworth. In the
1950s, he joined the PPC and worked there until his
retirement.

Uncle Anthony was a passionate singer and a very active choir
member. Not only was he involved in both the English and
Tamil choirs, he could also sing beautifully in Latin. His
children and some of the youngsters in the church called him
the “Elvis Presley of NBVM” for his powerful voice. He was
also committed in conducting the “Area Group” Rosary
regularly.

Uncle Nathan used to work for the “Railways”. After
speaking with many parishioners, I discovered that a
number of senior parishioners had worked there,
and they banded together to arrange for Masses to
be held in Perai. This subsequently resulted in the
setting up of the St Martin de Porres chapel, which
later evolved into the SCIC.

MANUEL KULANDAISAMY

While Uncle Nathan was known to move around
on his motorcycle, we also had Uncle Kulandai,
another Benemerenti recipient who would go
everywhere on his trusty bicycle. Uncle Kulandai
moved to Butterworth upon his retirement in the
late 1960s. He too worked for the Railways and was
a dear friend of Uncle Nathan.
Uncle Kulandai was a man of integrity and lived by
his motto “honesty is the best policy”. He served as
Communion minister, choir member and
catechism teacher for the Tamil community besides
accompanying the parish priest on home visits and
helping the needy. In his free time, he would use his
carpentry skills to repair church property,
including benches and kneelers.
Despite being a strict parent, his daughter Margaret
Angela shared that Uncle Kulandai enjoyed telling
his children stories from the days of the Japanese
occupation. This was his way of bonding with the
family. He also loved to give advice to anyone who
sought his help.

The Benemerenti Award was instituted by Pope Gregory XVI in 1832 to honour individuals who have shown lasting and
exceptional service to the Catholic Church, family and community. The word Benemerenti is Latin for “to a well-deserving person”.

Christians to live the two great
Commandments of Love – to love God and to
love our sisters and brothers we encounter
daily in our various ministries and mission.
Everyone is endowed with many beautiful
gifts to be shared and in sharing with others
it is our way of saying “Thank You” to God.
Whatever we give up for the Lord is never
really lost, for hands that open to give are
also hands opened to receive! Freely we have
received, let us freely give!”

Living through a pandemic has been a surreal
experience. As a parish we have been bracing
these trying times together by continuing to be the
witnesses that God has called us to be. We strive to
bring Christ to those around us. Led by our pastor
Rev Fr Dominic Santhiyagu, the parish through its
Project Kasih has initiated various programmes to
provide for the needs of the surrounding
communities.

The pandemic has made us leave our comfort
zones, forcing us to learn new skills, think of
creative ways of communal living and adapt
to a situation of great uncertainty. True, it has
been a time of extraordinary suffering for
many. We’ve also had to abandon many plans
for the yearlong celebrations towards the

But through it all, we live with Christian hope
and joy in the promise that the Lord will
always bring good out of even the bleakest
circumstances and with the certainty that He
goes before us every step of the way.

“In the world you have
tribulation; but be of good
cheer, I have overcome the
world.” John 16:33

Tuhan berkati selalu. Amin.

Congratulations and best wishes to
NBVM/SCIC on its 86/26 anniversaries. Around
the time SCIC was completed in 1995, I had
the privilege to park on its grounds while
looking for a nearby place to have lunch with
my family. It was as though God was calling
and inviting us to church. I never thought that
10 years later in 2005, my family and I would
join NBVM parish through the RCIA pathway.

May Mary and our patron saints continue to
intercede for us and lead us to our Lord Jesus
Christ in our faith journey.

My brother and I have also been baptised here and we

We are really excited to know that NBVM and SCIC are

generations to come too.

We wish everyone a happy anniversary and most of

are able to attend Mass in church soon.

The ministry I served in was founded on
God’s gift to me - the Tamil language. It
began when Fr Pathi and Fr Alex introduced
the Tamil liturgy in the parish. My desire was
to use my talent for the glory of God. I recall
meeting a woman aspiring to be a Catholic
who had deep faith and was able to relate to
the scriptures. This woman’s perseverance
inspired me to carry on my ministry in Tamil
RCIA and liturgy. I strongly believe that one
should read the Bible in their preferred
language and reiterate it to others.

We’ve come a long way as a parish. Let’s
remember that the priest does the main
planning for the parish, so it’s important for
leaders to be obedient and humble and work
together with their parish priest.

Happy 86/26 Anniversary!

I began my ministry in the parish in 1991 as a
catechist - coordinating the Tamil RCIA and
catechism, liturgical teams, training teachers,
couples for marriage and Communion ministers.
Meeting with the then parish priest, Fr Murphy
Pakiam was a memorable experience for me. When I
first met him, I thought he was a gardener as he was
eagerly tending to the parish grounds. His humility
and tenderness in caring for the parishioners
inspired me to serve in the same manner.

Blessed 86/26 Anniversary! I hope the leaders of the
parish learn to work with each other with love and
encourage more youths into service. We should all
also support and help our parish priests.
