About Papa

Papa, being an astute civil servant (“old school” of course) had instructed me when I was taking a
new job position. On my first day on the job, he addressed a long handwritten memo to me stating
the do’s and don’ts on the job. He went on to warn me that under no circumstances should I leave
my inbox (in those days we had in/out-trays) and go home. He instructed me to make sure that
everything in my inbox was attended to before I leave for the day. I became accustomed to this
practice. While my colleagues were busy saying goodnight at 5 pm, I would be burning the
midnight oil trying to “empty my inbox” because Papa said so.

Finally, I prayed a certain prayer for Papa in 2012, when I saw him in the U.K. The prayer was
based on Deuteronomy 34:7 - “And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his
eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.” I am glad the LORD answered me.

Tribute for Papa.

My Father was always larger than life itself to me. Daddy as he was to me, I found out as I grew up
was an important man to everyone in his presence. He was my father and I was always aware that
he was also a granddad and over time he was able to see his great grandchildren born. I remember
one of my many sisters say after the news of his passing that it's the order of life and of how
inevitable this is. The older I grew the closer we got to each other, and I always tried to call him
every other day so that we could speak regularly even when we didn't have much to say, at least
hearing his very particular voice always made me feel better. I'm so very much thankful for the last
fourty years that I in particular had him in my life. I have always thanked God for my dear father in
my prayers even when I was scared stiff of him. I was just wondering what he was trying to say to
me on our last call on the 13th, knowing what we know now I think that he probably was just trying
to say goodbye to me and how I should not be scared of the future without having my dear daddy's
guidance. This great man who passed away last week Monday was my daddy. May he rest in peace.

Grandad, you were a great man who achieved a lot in life. A true titan of your time, who played an
important and recognised role in the early development of Nigeria. We will always remember the
chocolates you bought for us during your trips to Geneva, introducing us to the joys of drinking
cream soda and your smile. It may be the end of your time on earth but your giant footprints will
forever mark your passage through it. Rest in perfect and everlasting peace.

My grandfather was exactly more like a father to me than a grandfather. In my childhood years, I
thought that he was a real father. I remember in our childhood, my siblings always ask me to ask

person he would listen to.
You will always and forever be in my heart. I love you Grandad, keep flying high.

For Grandpa

I celebrate you grandpa because you were a true force and made a great impact on our lives -
Understanding the importance of a good education and ensuring all your grandchildren had that
for which I will forever be grateful.

I remember while visiting you during summer break from university and looking forward to and
wondering what chef style breakfast you’ll whip up. Even though we’d offer to prepare it and
wanted you not to stress yourself - you’d refused. You enjoyed cooking breakfast and wanted to
show us your skills in the kitchen.

Fond memories

I remember when me and my sister used to always stay with grandpa on holidays from university
in England. I Would take him for a walk and to his appointments at the bank and at the doctors. He
always loved going out and doing things on his own. He would get up and say we shouldn’t make
breakfast that he wants to do it .
Also there was this one time he was butt dialing himself and he thought someone was prank
calling him. So he called the police in England and they came to the house to investigate only to
find out he was the one calling himself - good times
Grandpa will be missed. He was very kind and generous

Dear GrandPa,
So, I decided that I would just speak to you rather than writing a tribute sir, thank you so much for
what you did for me, my time with you was always treasured grandpa, even though you would
scold me for being late during my visit to you LOL, but my time of just conversing with you was
truly memorable. I made it a must that we saw every Sunday when I was in Lagos and you would
never give me a break when I was a little late, that was you granddad and it was another way of you
teaching me discipline and structure. I have always been your rebellious grandkid and I wear that
badge with honors because you still loved me, my happiest memory granddad was your smile on
my wedding day, after our countless discussion to settling down, I finally did it granddad and
honestly you were right, it is truly the best experience any man could ever ask for, and even
seeing you hold your great-grandkids Oluwadamilola and Ayodeji in your arms was such a
beautiful feeling.

I will miss you grandpa, thank you so much for just your presence, being in my life and playing the
role of my grandfather meant more than anything in this world to me. You have left us with a
wonderful and beautiful family my cousins and I will continue to build off your legacy you have
left behind for us to follow. Thank you sir, rest well Papa.

Tribute to Grandpa

Why are you crying? He was 99, they said!
My Grandfather was an extraordinary father figure. He was a man of integrity, strict and very
principled. He wanted the best for us, his grandchildren. Thus he encouraged me to excel in all
that I did and to strive for the best.

He didn’t only play the role of a Grandfather and a father in my life, he also played the role of a
mentor. There were times I misunderstood him, but as I looked back over the years, I realised

that, that stern voice, strict appearance and stoic demeanour was his way of showing me that he
loved me and that he wanted me to be strong and be the best that I could be.

I recall my conversation with him in 2002 regarding pursuing a masters degree. I approached
him with the feeling of uncertainty about what his response would be (bearing in mind that he
had already sponsored the first). Typical Grandpa, he didn’t complain at all. This was very
encouraging to me and this made me more determined to succeed and make him proud.

Grandpa it feels so unreal that you are no longer around, my heart felt empty the day I heard of
your passing. I will miss you and I love you very much. Rest in peace in the bosom of our Lord and

My Tribute to Otunba Engineer Theophilus Oluwole Akindele

I am thankful to God for the family my grandfather led and filled with gratitude for all my
grandfather did to enable me to have the career that I have now. My grandfather was strongly
supportive of the pursuit of knowledge and educational excellence( as exemplified by his life and
career) and like my parents, he believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. He continued to
care; every time we spoke he would ask how my job was going and enquire about my welfare in
totality.
Grandad was a great and tidy cook (the kitchen would always be spotless after he was done
cooking) and he made the best cooked breakfast ever. He was fiercely independent, lived life to

A Life Well Lived

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might..." - Ecclesiastes 9:10

Grandpa lived by this scripture. From our earliest memories of Grandpa, we knew him to be an
exemplary leader who did everything with excellence and expected the same of those around
him. Every moment with him was an opportunity to observe and learn from his kindness,
discipline, strength, courage, perseverance, curiosity, wit, diligence, organization, and many
years of breaking boundaries and limitations.

Grandpa taught us how to live an impactful life - worthy of admiration. He taught us the Lord's
prayer and many scriptures, he taught us the importance of family and togetherness, he modeled
and taught us sacrificial giving, he taught us to seek knowledge and value educational
advancement, he taught us how to give our very best in all that we do.

Grandpa played a critical role in the lives of his family, especially his grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. He was intentional about our growth and progress. We are grateful to have been
blessed with the precious gift of our Grandpa.

He leaves a lasting impact and legacy. We are inspired and challenged to follow Grandpa's
teachings and examples and do all things excellently and to the glory of God.

We celebrate Grandpa's life and thank God for a life well lived.
