                                      A Slow Awakening
(1) Around 270 million people have left China’s countryside to work in urban areas, many of
them leaving their children in the care of a lone parent, grandparents, relatives or other
guardians. By 2010 there were 61 million of these “left-behind children”, according to the All-
China Woman’s Federation. In an order released on February 14th, the government has at last
shown that it recognizes the problems caused by the splintering of so many families. The
document acknowledges that there has been a “strong reaction” from the public to the plight of
affected children. It describes improving their lot as “urgent”.
(2) That is clearly right. There have been numerous stories in recent years revealing the
horrors some of these children endure. Last year four siblings left alone in the south-western
province of Guizhou apparently committed suicide by drinking pesticide. Numerous sex-abuse
cases involving left-behind children have come to light.
(3) The new proposals look sensible enough: minors may not be abandoned entirely; local
institutions such as schools and hospitals must do more to notify the authorities of cases of
abuse or neglect; social workers should monitor the welfare of left-behind children. Sadly,
however, the government’s suggested remedies will achieve little. They largely replicate recent
laws and policies designed to protect children (not just left-behind ones), which have been
almost universally unenforced. It is already illegal to allow minors to live alone, for example.
There is no indication that the new recommendations will be made law or implemented any
more rigorously.
(4) The new scheme mentions the importance of giving migrants urban hukou, or household-
registration certificates, which are needed to gain access to public services such as education
and health care. Most migrants leave their children in the countryside because they do not have
such papers. In December the government announcement announced plans to make it easier
for migrants to gain urban hukou privileges. But few casual labourers are likely to fulfil the still-
strict conditions that must be met to qualify.

       left-behind children.

       recommendations

Read the following passages and choose the best answers to the questions.
Passage 1
Nature is full of color, from rainbows and roses to butterfly wings and peacock tails. Even
the fruits and vegetables you eat often have distinctive colors: intensely blue blueberries, deeply
red strawberries, richly green broccoli, vividly orange carrots. Plants and animals often use color
to attract attention. Deep rich colors also provide another important benefit for plants. Scientists
have shown that the substances responsible for these colors actually help protect plants from
chemical damage. The good news for us is that, when we eat colorful fruits and vegetables, the
pigments or colorings protect us, too.
The pigments responsible for plant color belong to a class of chemicals known as
antioxidants. Plants make antioxidants to protect themselves from the sun's ultraviolet light
which causes chemicals called free radicals to form within plant cells. If free radicals move
through plant cells without being neutralized or eliminated, they can begin to destroy parts of
the plant. Antioxidants stop free radicals in their tracks, shielding cells from harm.
The key to fighting free radicals with fruits and vegetables is to mix and match colors. Go
for very bright colors and for many different colors. In general, fresh fruits and vegetables are
great, but dried or frozen forms of these foods can also be healthy. People who have tried to
make pills with antioxidants in them have found that the pills don't seem to work as well as
eating the fruits and vegetables themselves.
So, the next time you’re at supermarkets, you can shop for your own personal chemistry
experiment. Pick out interesting fruits and vegetables with lots of different colors, and then get
to work in the kitchen. You might try preparing something that you've never tasted before, or
you just might create a meal that's both beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. And, as you
digest your meal, those colorful antioxidants will start doing their own chemistry on the inside,
neutralizing free radicals and keeping you healthy.

Passage 2
With their stiff leaves and large spiky flowers, bromeliads can add drama to a plant stand
or window sill. They are not the flashiest of houseplants. Still, some pollution scientists are ready
to give them raves. Their new data show these plants are superstars when it comes to cleaning
the air.
Paints, furniture, photocopiers and printers, cleaning supplies and dry-cleaned clothes can
all release a family of toxic gases into indoor air. As a class, these gases are known as volatile
organic chemicals, or VOCs. Inhaling a number of them can cause dizziness, allergic reactions
— even asthma. Long-term exposure might lead to liver damage, kidney damage or cancer.
This is important because people often can’t smell these chemicals. They also can't stop
breathing when a room’s air becomes polluted, notes Vadoud Niri. He is a chemist at the State
University of New York at Oswego. And once VOCs enter a room’s air, there’s no way to pull
them out again. People can’t vacuum them out.
But certain types of greenery can suck the pollutants up, which keeps them safely away
from us.
Niri and his colleagues had conducted an investigation to see what would happen if plants
were exposed to a mix of VOCs. His team exposed five common houseplants — a bromeliad,
Caribbean tree cactus, dracaena (Dra-SEE-nuh), jade plant and spider plant — to eight
common VOCs.
โครงการแบรนด์ซมั เมอร์แคมป์ ปีที่ 29 35 ภาษาองั กฤษ (อ.อรสิ รา)
Certain plants were better than others at removing a particular VOC. For instance, all five
plants removed acetone (ASS-eh-tone) — a smelly VOC in nail polish remover. But after 12
hours, the dracaena had cleared out 94 percent of this gas — more than any of the other
plants.
Meanwhile, the spider plant removed VOCs most speedily. Once placed inside the
container, VOC levels started to fall within one minute. But this plant didn't have staying power.
The bromeliad did. After 12 hours, it had removed more VOCs from the air than any other
plant. The two VOCs that it could not filter out — dichloromethane and trichloromethane — were
also ignored by the other plants. So in this regard, it was no worse than the others.

Passage 3
Grazing? That’s right, grazing - eating six or more small meals each day. This alternative
eating style may provide several benefits. Grazing can help to maintain a healthy weight, lower
blood cholesterol, and control blood sugar. This eating plan can also help regulate appetite,
increase metabolic rate, and allow for better absorption of nutrients. Grazing also matches an
active, on-the-go lifestyle.
Mini-meals are not snacks eaten between larger meals. Instead they are a variety of small
portions eaten throughout the day. The real challenge with this eating style is eating enough
servings from each food group while not over-eating. Each mini-meal should be thought out
and selected from nutritious foods, just as you would with your other meals.
A few tips can help you master grazing. Keep each mini-meal about the same size to
avoid over-eating and yet satisfy your appetite. Appetizer size portions in restaurants and at
home are about the right size for mini meals. You don’t have to plan six or more different little
meals each day. You could instead take the meals you eat now and divide them up throughout
the day.
Grazing may not be for everyone. For some, frequent snacking could lead to overeating.
Obesity experts generally advise that overweight people not graze since it may promote mindless
eating. In addition, eating many times throughout the day may be inconvenient for some.
Remember that ultimately it is not how or when you eat that matters but what you eat. The
most important thing is to choose an eating style that matches your personal needs and lifestyle
and helps you make the best food choices possible.

Passage 4
Adversity presents opportunity. Just ask Iwao Keiichi. Forced by illness to close his
restaurant management and food manufacturing firm, Iwao began life anew in 1993 when he
established Tokyo’s first job placement firm, Way Station.
The Japanese economy had just crashed, and Iwao expected that many people would soon
lose their jobs. He was right. Last year, his turnover was $4.1 million, and he expects a four-fold
increase this year.
Job placement services are new to a nation which is used to lifetime employment. In these
jittery times, Iwao, 54, is helping Japanese who haven’t a clue how to look for work. His firm
retrains job-seekers and refers them to prospective employers. Big firms also pay Iwao for
advice on how to deal with layoffs and restructuring. “My services,” he says, “offer a soft
landing for all parties.”
At Way Station, every client facing the chop is assigned a “job-hunt” counselor. Counselors
spend about three months studying a candidate’s work skills and matching themto job
prospects. Clients also learn how to write resumes, use PCs and face interviews. Last year, 450
job-seekers went through Iwao’s training centers in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. He
expects 1,200 this year. Since competition for jobs is tough, he advises clients to change their
way of thinking and look beyond Japan’s major corporations to small firms. Iwao has succeeded
in part because he is much like his clients - a middle-agedman facing a mid-career setback
who took a gamble and won.

Passage 5
If you went on Facebook over the weekend you may have seen friends’ profile pictures
turned multi-coloured. Maybe you even tinted your own pic. A rainbow filter tool was introduced
by the company after last week’s landmark Supreme Court decision which cleared the way for
same-sex marriage across the US. But in some areas of the world the response to the initiative
was less than enthusiastic - and even downright hostile.
In Russia, several filters were created which splash the colours of national flags rather than
rainbow banners across a picture. One such app has been downloaded more than 4,000 times.
“Our response to the rainbow world #Proudtoberussian,” said one typical comment by Moscow
resident Elena Starkova.
Russia has controversial laws which ban providing information about homosexuality to
people under age 18, and a recent poll showed that more than 80% of Russians oppose
legalising same-sex marriage.

Despite this, some Russians backlashed against the backlash. Anna Koterlnikova, who had
changed her profile pic to a rainbow flag, commented: “Sorry! I’m straight and Russian but I’m
not a homophobe!”
In the Middle East, many social media users also came out strongly against the rainbow
flag. “It’s a message that it hurts me,” said Egyptian Twitter user Sharif Najm, while Rami Isa
from Syria tweeted: “Damn you and your marriage. You have distorted our innocent childhood
symbol.” Ahmad Abd-Rabbuh, an Egyptian political science professor, said that gay marriage
“is not in harmony with society and culture.”
In Egypt, around 2,000 tweets mentioned the rainbow motif, most of them critical. Some
users even went so far as to sarcastically blame a weekend storm on users who turned their
profile pics multi-coloured. But not all reaction was negative. Egyptian TV presenter Muna Iraqi
commented: “I support people’s right to live and love freely, without any persecution.”
Of course, it also should be noted that same-sex marriage is by no means universally
popular in the US, about two-fifths of Americans, however, oppose it, according to the Pew
Research Center. “I’m 100% against gay marriage,” tweeted Joshua Taipale. “I have gay friends
and they’re great people; it’s not personal. But U.S. can’t decide. Should be state-by-state.”
